In death, as he was in life, Michael Jackson is still proving to be the King of Pop. In the same week that the documentary "Michael Jackson's This Is It" was the #1 movie in the land, the accompanying soundtrack will take the honors on the Billboard 200 albums chart. According to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan, the "This Is It" soundtrack will assume the top spot with sales of 373,000, easily besting the week's other big debut, a #2 bow by reunited rockers Creed, whose Full Circle moved 110,000 units.
Thanks to the release of a deluxe edition last Monday, Taylor Swift's Fearless will move up four spots to #3 on sales of 109,000. While the more than 4 million in total sales for the album is impressive, Swift will also notch another major milestone this week, »

You saw Once, right? If you didn’t, go rent it or stream it or whatever you have to do. No other film I’ve ever seen so accurately captures the joys and agonies of making music without any rational hope of ever earning a dime off it. Now, the film’s stars, Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, who are really musicians—and who really fell in love during the 17-day shoot—are out with a new album. They call themselves The Swell Season, and they’re calling the new collection Strict Joy, after a poem by the Irish poet James Stephens about how “the poet makes grief beautiful.” That’s relevant because they have since broken up—amicably, as reported in The New York Times two Sundays ago. Like all the good breakup albums, Strict Joy, out today on Anti, pulsates with unruly emotions. But as in the film, »

Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová’s first album as The Swell Season contained songs the Irish rocker and Czech chanteuse worked up for the 2006 movie Beauty In Trouble, and some of those songs were re-used for the indie-film hit Once, at which point Hansard and Irglová began to tour together, win awards, and rack up sales. So it’s fair to say that The Swell Season’s second proper album, Strict Joy, represents the first time the duo has entered a studio knowing that there’d be a sizable, receptive audience for whatever they came up with. Which ... »

Inspired by an intimate, wonderful performance last night by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, the two stars of “Once” who also record under the name the Swell Season, I feel inclined to share a video of the song whose Academy Awards win has to rank as my favorite of the past several years.
"Falling Slowly," from "Once" (Fox Searchlight)
Hansard and Irglova performed on Sunday night in a dramatic little hall on the grounds of the Hollywood Forever cemetery behind Paramount Studios; they playe... »

As an Irishman who’s never set foot in Ireland, I’m sort of obsessed with all things Irish. So I was ecstatic to find out I Sell The Dead was written and directed a real, live Irishman, from Ireland, with the accent, the pale (I call it “royal”) complexion, and the Guinness addiction—Glenn McQuaid. Let the stalking begin!
The press has had a field day with McQuaid’s film (including Fangoria; you can watch a nice “Making of…” feaurette and read a “Director’s Statement” here) McQuaid and the film are basically omnipresent in the horror and mainstream press at the moment, which is awesome…
…unless you pride yourself on getting info out of your interview subjects that hasn’t been printed a billion times before. Damn you and your success, McQuaid!
So I decided to let sleeping zombies lie and came up with a random series of »

The funeral for Eunice Kennedy Shriver was held today. Celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey, Stevie Wonder and Jon Bon Jovi attended, as well as family members including her daughter, California First Lady Maria Shriver and Maria's husband, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. During the service, titled "Celebrating The Transformative Eunice Kennedy Shriver," Oprah could be seen crying. Later, Gov. Schwarzenegger went to the podium for a reading. Her grandchildren also spoke, expressing their thanks for everything from life lessons she taught them -- like helping them to get over their fears and teaching them faith --- to taking them out for strawberry shakes. Courage, faith and commitment proved to be the most common expressions of Eunice's most outstanding traits. Oscar winner Glen Hansard ('Once') sang during the service. Maria Shriver delivered a touching and humorous eulogy to her "Mummy" that closed the tribute. After describing some of Eunice's quirkier traits, »

Kris Allen becomes media headline soon after being crowned as the winner of "American Idol" season eight on May 20 and beating down judges' favorite Adam Lambert. Following his victory in the reality singing competition, he was signed to 19 Entertainment/Jive Records to release a solo studio album.
Prior to hitting studio for his solo debut effort, Kris has a winning song called "No Boundaries". The single has been available for digital purchase one day after the Idol finale result show and has climbed to number 11 on Billboard Hot 100.
While many acclaimed producers such as Howard Benson and Lauren Christy have stepped out offering which direction Kris should take for his new record, Kris himself explains that the only thing he wants to do "is just be respected in the music industry." He also hopes to "turn [his Idol win] into a good thing: Pressure to make good music and get out there and work hard. »

We look back at the 'American Idol' finalists' past 11 weeks and see how they really match up.

Tuesday night's "American Idol" finale will have season-eight finalists (and roommates) Kris Allen and Adam Lambert going toe-to-toe in three rounds. Lambert is the odds-on winner come Wednesday night's results show, but we say Kris still has a fighting chance. Taking a cue from "America's Next Top Model," in which Tyra Banks does a side-by-side comparison of the two finalists' portfolios, we thought we'd break down Adam Lambert's and Kris Allen's "Idol" repertoire week-to-week to help determine who's really in the lead.
Week One: The Semifinals
Adam: The Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction"
Kris: Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror"
Winner: Adam
Adam pulled out all the stops for his first live "Idol" performance, »

This week's theme of "American Idol" is an interesting one, "Songs From the Movies" and to add cherry on top is Quentin Tarantino. The actor slash producer slash director knows any soundtrack enough that he is made the mentor for the top 7. However, he won't sit on the judge panel like he did in the third season.
Straight away Quentin is introduced at the beginning of the show, replacing Ryan Seacrest to utter the catchphrase "This.. is American Idol". Simon Cowell then explained that last week the show had an over time of 8 minutes, and therefore each contestant tonight will get comments only from two judges.
First up is Allison Iraheta who sings "Armageddon" soundtrack: "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" by Aerosmith. Steven Van Zandt in the audience seat, gave her a standing ovation. Paula Abdul says she shares the "same special sauce as Adam" and Simon says »

BSG signed off with the largest ratings it has ever seen last Friday. With 2.4 million viewers turning in to the 2 hour, 11 minute long bittersweet sobfest (well, I sobbed), Sci Fi had a Huge cable audience last Friday, a continuance of a trend that is being ignored by whatever doofus believes the network is going to struggle enough that they need to take the unbelievably stupid step of rebranding the network “SyFy”.

Kings had another strong episode, with the plans of King Silas becoming clearer and the role of David become more interesting. The producers have promised that David won't play sissy-happy-pants for the entire show, so expect to see a darker side emerging in upcoming weeks. After all, power corrupts. And if this man has been crowned by the butterflies and thinks he may be destined to be King, »

To mark St Patrick's Day, an Irish episode of 'The Simpsons', entitled - 'In the Name of the Grandfather', will receive its worldwide premiere on Sky1 and Sky1 HD on March 17th 7.30pm. This episode will be the first ever in 'The Simpsons' 20 year history to receive its first broadcast outside the Us. The episode sees Homer and Grandpa traveling to Ireland where they drunkenly buy a pub in the village of Dunkilderry. However, reality sets in when the duo realise that pubs are no longer as popular as they used to be since the introduction of the smoking ban in 2004. Irish talent to lend their voices to the episode include Colm Meaney (Intermission), who will be voicing the character of pub owner Tom O'Flanagan, and Oscar Winners Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova who will play two local buskers performing on Grafton Street. »

Tom O'Neil at Gold Derby is reporting Fox Searchlight has chosen to push one Slumdog Millionaire original over the other. In this case it is "Jai Ho" over "O Saya" for Best Original Song at the 2009 Oscars. It makes plenty of sense why they would choose the closing song from the film that has energized so many that have seen it as it is the obvious front-runner and why run the risk of the two songs hurting the other's chances due to people that can't decide between them. On top of that, I am sure they are also looking at last year's race where Disney's Enchanted was nominated for three songs and ultimately lost to Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova's "Falling Slowly" from Once after the long debate as to whether it actually qualified. Of course, last year, "Falling Slowly" was obviously the superior song and the Enchanted tracks »

The Oscar-winning actor/songwriters who fell in love for real on the set of Irish independent movie Once have split. Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova played a busker and an immigrant who bond over their love of music in the 2006 movie.
The pair became a couple in real life, and melted hearts at last year's Academy Awards when they collected the Best Original Song award for their duet Falling Slowly, taken from the movie's soundtrack.
But their relationship has come to an end, even though they are still performing together.
Hansard explains, "I think we both concluded that that wasn't what we really wanted. We're just really good friends." »

Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova may play together, but they haven't stayed together. The former couple won an Oscar last year for their song "Falling Slowly" from the film Once. Hansard, a member of the Irish band The Frames, and Irglova starred in the movie as well, playing an Irish busker and a Czech immigrant who meet, make music together and fall in love. During their Academy Award appearance, it seemed life had imitated art, but the romantic aspect relationship was not meant to be. "It did become a real relationship," Hansard tells Australia's Sydney Morning Herald, where the duo is performing together at the famed Sydney Opera House. "I think it was just a very natural... »
