It is the spring of “Baby Reindeer.” Netflix’s addictive limited series about a struggling comedian (Richard Gadd) working at a bar who makes the biggest mistake of his life when he gives a lonely woman (Jessica Gunning) a cup of tea on the house is the most watched series currently on the streamer and viewership is growing. And the fact that it’s based on a true story, makes “Baby Reindeer” even more creep and chilling. It’s a must-see voyeur thriller.
The same was true in the fall of 1987 with Adrian Lyne’s “Fatal Attraction.” Audiences flocked to the hard R-rated thriller which starred a wild-haired Glenn Close as an editor with a publishing company who has one-night stand with a happily married attorney (Michael Douglas) whose wife and daughter are out of town. Though it’s “understood” that it’s just a fling, Close’s Alex just won’t let go.

Anyone who has seen "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" — and going by the film's impressive box-office numbers, that oughta be most of you out there — knows that Dan Stevens is an absolute delight in it. To be fair, this isn't a huge surprise, as anyone who's been following Stevens' on-screen career knows that the actor is routinely a highlight of everything he appears in, whether he's the lead in something like FX's "Legion" and "GxK" director Adam Wingard's "The Guest" or (and sometimes especially) when he's appearing as a supporting character in films like "Colossal" or this month's "Abigail."
His role of Trapper in "GxK" seems particularly special, however, given that Stevens isn't merely playing a comic relief character. Instead, he's some unique combination of a wonder-filled adventurer, an animal-loving veterinarian, and a laid-back hippie dude. That's just one way of describing Trapper, however — Stevens himself has...

It’s always fascinating when a movie with a top star, and directed by another star, goes as far under the radar as Steve Buscemi‘s “The Listener,” starring Tessa Thompson, has.
But in the case of this particularly gentle movie — available on VOD now for $6.99 — maybe that’s part of its DNA. Like the mental health helpline operator Thompson plays, this is a movie that’s there if you need it: Quiet, thoughtful, and totally shunning the kind of splashiness that most movies are thought to require these days to stand out.
“The Listener” premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2022, where it was the closing night film of the Venice Days sidebar. On April 13, it was the closing night film of the Sarasota Film Festival, out of competition — in this over 18-month festival journey, it’s also made stops at the festivals in Vienna, Thessaloniki, Stockholm, The Hague,...

Industry biggies, including the likes of Timothée Chalamet, Kate Winslet, and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Greta Gerwig, have shared regret over working with controversial filmmaker Woody Allen. While Allen, who was accused of s-xually molesting his daughter Dylan Farrow, wasn’t convicted of anything in the ’90s, Farrow once again spoke against the alleged incident in an open letter in 2014.
As the allegations resurfaced, several actors shared remorse over associating themselves with the director. But in a recent episode of Club Random podcast, Bill Maher seemingly defended Allen against the allegations and even took shots at actors, who’ve distanced themselves from the director.

It’s official: The book isn’t always better than the movie.

Because there are so many adaptations out there, we’re keeping this list to original Netflix films. Those page-to-screen stories include titles as varied as Rebecca Hall’s moving take on the Harlem Renaissance classic Passing, Gina Prince-Bythewood’s kinetic action flick taken from the panels of comic book The Old Guard, and Martin Scorsese’s engrossing crime saga realizing the nonfiction mob chronicle I Heard You Paint Houses — among many others. In Adam Wingard's new monster mash "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," Dan Stevens' character -- the rock 'n' roll monster veterinarian named Trapper -- is introduced leaping on board a high-tech helicopter equipped with strange grappling hooks and pulleys. Trapper has been called in to sedate and perform dental surgery on Kong, who is suffering from a titanic toothache. Trapper hoots and grins as he is lowered into the unconscious Kong's mouth, eager to see what the problem is. He yanks out Kong's tooth and replaces it with an artificial implant, smiling all the while.
Trapper is like an ultra-cool version of Ace Ventura, complete with skillfully windswept hair and Hawaiian shirts. The character looks like he's just as ready to attend a days-long music festival as he is to tend to the wounds of ailing megafauna. Throughout "Godzilla x Kong," he wears a perma-smirk, always bemused to...

Jaws dropped at Legendary and Warner Bros. when Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire opened to $80 million in North America over Easter weekend despite getting shredded by critics. It wasn’t quite double what tracking services had predicted, but close enough. And by day 10, its global cume had hit an impressive $361.1 million as it stayed atop the chart.
So what next? “This is certainly an exciting result,” says Mary Parent, chairman of worldwide production for Josh Grode’s Legendary. Grode’s company is on an enviable winning streak, between this film and early March blockbuster Dune: Part Two. “We are in a good position to continue the journey, but let’s see how Godzilla x Kong unfolds,” Parent says. “These are early days, but we are certainly feeling good.”
Godzilla x Kong is sure to be a hot topic this week at Cinemacon, the annual gathering of cinema operators and Hollywood studios in Las Vegas.

Kevin Feige was part of the infamous Marvel Creative Committee (McC) in the early stages of the MCU and played a crucial role in preventing the committee from ruining Captain America. With multiple Godzilla movies and T.V. shows dropping this year, it might be tricky for fans to track them all. Here is a guide that can help! (Picture Credit: IMDb)
On November 3, 2023, Toho Studios released what many consider to be one of the best Godzilla films in recent times — “Godzilla Minus One.” Then, Legendary Pictures came out with their first live-action series featuring the not-so-gentle giant in “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” on November 17, 2023. They had also recently created an animated series based on King Kong called “Skull Island” on June 22, 2023.
With that being said — 2023 was Godzilla’s year, without a doubt! However, there’s a big difference between the Godzilla movies from Toho Studios and Legendary Pictures. Simply put, Toho owns Godzilla. However, Legendary Pictures secured the rights to the giant 500-ft lizard and other monsters in the Kaiju universe in 2014, ultimately coming up with a ‘Hollywood’ version known as the MonsterVerse.

In a world where superhero films and features have dominated the box office for years, Kaiju movies are coming to take center stage in recent times. Just days ago it was the Japanese kaiju tale Godzilla Minus One that rocked the cinematic world with its brilliant storyline and even more amazing graphics, bagging the Best Visual Effects Oscar in the process. And now it is Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire premiered on March 29, 2024, as the most recent installment in the MonsterVerse franchise. The movie received mixed reviews from critics and is one of the installments with the lowest score, but fans are amazed as things stand now, and the box office earnings seem to confirm that. The movie surpassed expectations for its opening day and previews, and now that the first weekend is over, it has earned an amazing $194 million, landing the best opening weekend of the year, as well as breaking into the top ten list of highest-grossing movies after just one weekend.
The movie has just started its theatrical run, and to be frank, it is projected to become a box office hit. With the success of the movie, the MonsterVerse franchise also managed to hit past the $2-billion mark, becoming one of the most lucrative franchises in movie history.

Easter continues its tradition as a great holiday weekend for a big studio movie release, proven by the sequel “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” which far exceeded all expectations. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Almost three years after Warner Bros. released director Adam Wingard‘s “Godzilla vs. Kong” at the height of the pandemic with a simultaneous HBO Max streaming release, the franchise was able to return to traditional theatrical by releasing “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” into 3,861 theaters on Friday. Starring Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry and Kaylee Hottle from the previous movie, joined by Dan Stevens, Wingard’s sequel received mixed-to-negative reviews, but after making $10 million in Thursday previews “Godzilla x Kong” brought in $37 million on Good Friday, which is just slightly less than the $38.4 million opening day for “Godzilla” back in 2014.
Business kept up through the weekend for $80 million estimated from Warner Bros.

The next installment in Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse was released earlier this week on March 29. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is a sequel to 2021’s Godzilla Vs. Kong and sees the titular monsters team up to fight a bigger Titan who threatens to destroy the world. The film received mixed responses from critics and seemed to have a good opening weekend.
Director Adam Wingard returned to helm the project after the success of the previous film. Along with other cast members such as Rebecca Hall and Bryan Tyree Henry, deaf actress Kaylee Hottle also reprised her role as Jia. Wingard mentioned how he managed to create a complicated system to give cues to the star as the performance involved many reaction shots for the monsters.

After three days of release, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” stands as the third-highest-grossing movie of the year. It has collected a mighty $194 million globally in its opening weekend, ranking behind only “Dune: Part Two” ($626 million after five weeks of release) and “Kung Fu Panda 4” ($347 million after four weeks of release) in terms of overall ticket sales.
The monster mashup, from Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment, kicked off at the international box office with $114 million from 64 markets. It also far exceeded expectations in North America with $80 million in its first weekend of release. Overseas, China led the way with $44 million, followed by Mexico with $12.8 million and India with $5.5 million.
“We wanted to deliver something that was highly entertaining to audiences,” says “Godzilla x Kong” producer Mary Parent. “Nobody has a crystal ball. You can only hope and dream. So, seeing this result globally feels really good and exciting.

“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” stomped to the top of box office charts, collecting a better-than-expected $80 million from 3,861 North American theaters in its debut.
Heading into the weekend, the monster mashup was projected to earn $50 million to $55 million to start. But “Godzilla x Kong,” which sees the two otherworldly beasts team up to save the planet, trounced those projections after benefitting from several factors, including premium large formats (accounting for 48% of ticket sales) and audience enthusiasm (it landed an “A-” CinemaScore”). Critics were less impressed by “The New Empire,” starring Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry and Dan Stevens and directed by Adam Wingard (“Godzilla vs. Kong”). It holds a 55% “rotten” average on Rotten Tomatoes.
It’s the second-biggest debut for Warner Bros. and Legendary’s MonsterVerse, following 2014’s “Godzilla” ($93 million) but ahead of 2017’s “Kong: Skull Island” ($61 million), 2019’s “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” ($47.7 million) and 2021’s “Godzilla vs. Kong...

Enemies-turned-frenemies proved to be just what the Easter weekend box office needed.
Warner Bros. and Legendary’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire opened to a monstrous $80 million at the domestic box office, well ahead of an expected $45 million to $55 million. The tentpole scored the second-best opening in the MonsterVerse Universe, no small feat for a fifth film in a franchise. It also delivered the fifth biggest Easter opening of all time, according to Sunday estimates.
Globally, the film stomped to a $194 million launch after taking in $114 million overseas from 64 markets — including an impressive $44 million in China, where Legendary East is handling the movie. These days, many Hollywood event pics don’t come close to doing that level of business in China (on Monday, it will pass up the $46.5 million earned by Dune: Part II to rank as the top-grossing Hollywood title of 2024). Godzilla and King Kong may be the titans fans flock to see, but a new contender has entered the ring, and he’s no mindless beast. Director Adam Wingard sheds light on the motivations behind Skar King, the cunning villain who stands as a stark contrast to Kong in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

While Godzilla and other Titans are driven by instinct, Skar King is different. Unlike Godzilla and the other big monsters, he isn’t just acting on instincts. He’s smart and thinks things through. Here the director explains more about what makes Skar King such a unique and menacing villain.
Director Reveals Why Skar King is the Perfect Villain in the MonsterVerse
Director Adam Wingard wanted to show how smart primates can be in real life, and he used that to shape Skar King’s character.

"Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" just made its way to theaters, but MonsterVerse fans who want to keep the kaiju goodness going will want to listen up. The folks at Waxwork Records have announced a special release of the film's soundtrack on vinyl, which you can pre-order as we speak. Much like the film itself, it is colorful and overflowing with monster madness. Oh, and it comes with a 12x12 art print.
The "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" original motion pictures soundtrack features all 23 tracks from the score for the film. The original music was composed by Tom Holkenborg, aka Junkie Xl, who previously created music for Zack Snyder's "Justice League" and "Mad Max: Fury Road." Holkenborg teamed up with composer Antonio Di Iorio ("Godzilla vs Kong") to craft an appropriately epic score for director Adam Wingard's kaiju brawl. Holkenborg had this to say about it:...

Some movie stars don’t lose their luster. A 90-year-old ape and a 69-year-old reptile are taking over domestic charts this weekend, as Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment’s “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” scored $37 million from 3,861 venues across opening day and preview screenings. It’s an impressive debut that puts the monster-mash well ahead of the pace that was projected earlier this week, which had pegged an opening just north of $50 million.
“The New Empire” cost a substantial sum of $135 million to produce, but it’s getting off on the right, gigantic foot. Reviews have been mediocre — a notch down from the fairly positively received “Godzilla vs. Kong” in 2021 and way below the euphoric praise that the Japanese production “Godzilla Minus One” earned just three months ago. Nonetheless, audiences aren’t being swayed. The kaiju team-up seems to be playing well to crowds, after earning an “A-” grade from research firm Cinema Score.

This weekend sees the release of the fifth film in WB/Legendary’s MonsterVerse saga, Godzilla x Kong: The New Era. These films have attempted to somewhat reinvent the traditional Kaiju film for Western audiences, with our mighty monster heroes being called Titans. While the franchise arguably stumbled out of the gate with Gareth Edwards’ coolly received Godzilla, the saga has steadily grown in popularity, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is looking like a big hit. But how do the films stack up against each other? Let’s take a look with our MonsterVerse Movies Ranked List!

Plot: When a signal from an uncharted area of Hollow Earth riles up Godzilla, Monarch’s team has to investigate, while Kong discovers a lost society which may give him the home he’s long desired.

Interestingly, this universe has never been tremendously successful with audiences. WB would have likely thrown in the towel were it not that Godzilla Vs Kong was a surprise smash at the box office. Since Godzilla hit theaters in 2014, each installment has promised to be ‘bigger and better’ than the last. With more carnage, more monsters and more uncharted territory, Godzilla x Kong sees the two titular beasts put their past battles behind them, joining forces to defeat a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world. With action aplenty and visually pleasing world-building, Godzilla x Kong is an entertaining way to pass two hours, yet its poor script and lack of character development stop it from being truly great.
Seeing these monsters battle it out is an undeniably fun shlock fest; Godzilla x Kong’s issue is that it takes too long to get there. With new characters to meet, new territory to discover and new threats to understand the danger of, there’s a lot of exposition, a very small amount of which is entertaining – it unfortunately reduces itself to hand-holding. The first...

The plot picks up a couple of years after the events of the previous film, with Kong now settled into his new home in Hollow Earth and Godzilla taking down Titans on the surface world, in between power naps in the Colosseum. However, when Dr Ilene Andrews’ (Rebecca...

Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man 3 received praise for its performances, but there was one actress whom fans would have loved to see more. Godzilla x Kong actress Rebecca Hall played Maya Hansen in the film, who had nothing much to offer in the storyline of the film. Interestingly, Hall initially had a more meaty role in the film as a villain, however, the character was later decided to be killed off towards the beginning of the third act of the film.

Hall’s role was reduced midway through filming and it had a very sexist reason behind it. Earlier Marvel films also had the goal of selling toys for Marvel Entertainment. The then-boss of Marvel, Isaac Perlmutter, believed that Hall’s female villain would not sell many toys compared to male villains.

Warning! Spoilers ahead for "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire."
The MonsterVerse is getting a massive upgrade with "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" — and not only because director Adam Wingard is introducing a crop of brand-new villains to the fray. The eponymous Titans are also getting a few enhancements of their own: Godzilla is somehow pink now, while Kong sports a bright-yellow mechanical arm. As Dr. Ilene Andrews says in the film's latest trailer, some "minor augmentations" are pretty much par the course at this stage of the franchise. Godzilla and Kong might have put their primordial beef to rest, but that's only because they've got to deal with the new threat that is the Skar King. For all their individual power, that's one gnarly kaiju, and they definitely can't defeat him alone.
So yeah, "The New Empire" follows Godzilla on his quest to amass more nuclear energy, while...

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire hopes to leave a big footprint when marching into theaters around the globe this weekend after starting off with a record $10 million in Thursday previews, the best showing ever for Warner Bros. and Legendary’s MonsterVerse library, as well as the best preview of the year to date.
Warners is estimating a domestic weekend opening in the $45 million to $50 million range over the Easter frame, while at least one major tracking service is counting on $50 million to $55 million. Based on the preview turnout, New Empire could climb notably higher, unless it is front-loaded.
Overseas, New Empire is looking at an $80 million debut, which would put its global launch in the $135 million range.
The previews figure tops prior entries in the Godzilla MonsterVerse, with Godzilla (2014) opening to $9.3 million in previews, Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) bowing to $6.3 million in previews and Kong: Skull Island (2017) nabbing $3.7 million.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has hit the theatres and reviews from the newest project of the MonsterVerse franchise hit an all-time low, despite the project featuring second-best previews ever. While certain fans are utterly disgusted with Adam Wingard’s latest project, some are satisfied with the film. However, the newest addition to the franchise has the second worst reviews for the film standing at an all-time low of 56% at Rotten Tomatoes.

While the film was entertaining to watch, the critics did not agree with the viewers, as the newest film failed to make any new approach to the film which prevents it from showcasing a fascinating plot from metamorphosing into something better. However, ardent fans of the franchise believe otherwise because they believe that the low score is a result of the film constantly being compared with Godzilla Minus One.

“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” is looking mighty as it heads into its opening weekend, earning an impressive $10 million in Thursday previews.
The muscular results come despite the fact that the film suffered meh reviews — critics faulted the latest clash of the primordial titans for hectic pacing and overstuffed plotting. Variety‘s Owen Gleiberman, for instance, dismissed the film as “overly busy boilerplate” (though he liked the finale). And yet audiences don’t seem to care about the middling notices. “Godzilla x Kong: New Empire” scored the best preview results of any entry in Legendary’s Monsterverse series, just ahead of 2014’s “Godzilla,” which earned $9.3 million while kicking off this whole scaly saga.
Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment co-produced “New Empire,” which cost $135 million. It was initially expected to open to a sizable $50 million to $55 million and could bring in between $80 million to $85 million at the international box office.

Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire made a suitably thunderous start at China’s theatrical box office Friday. The film had earned about $7 million (Rmb 50 million) by 3 p.m. local time in Beijing, according to ticketing service Maoyan.
Maoyan currently forecasts the monster movie to earn as much as $105 million in China. That would be a significant step down from the massive $188.7 million that Godzilla vs. Kong earned in the country in 2021, but easily the best performance by a Hollywood film there in months. Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two is currently the top U.S. title in China of 2024 with a little over $45 million (topping Dune: Part One‘s $39.5 million local total).
The New Empire is benefitting from particularly strong social scores, so far, averaging 9.6 on Alibaba’s Taopiaopiao ticketing platform and 9.4 on Maoyan.
