It’s been over a year since the release of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,’ marking the conclusion of the team’s journey as we knew it. It also served as James Gunn’s final directorial venture for the MCU before he transitioned full-time into directing for the newly established Dcu.
Chris Pratt’s character, Star-Lord, received a fitting conclusion; despite losing the girl, he gained something far more significant: the chance to rediscover what he lost when he was abducted by Yondu. The film’s closing scenes depict Peter enjoying a meal with his maternal grandfather, leaving viewers with the hopeful message, “Star-Lord will return.”
Certainly, Peter Quill remains a significant figure in the MCU, being one of its most beloved characters. Thus, it seemed inevitable that he would make appearances in future projects. However, a seed of doubt was planted, given Rocket Raccoon’s assumption of leadership...

James Gunn has a lot planned for the DC Universe, and a significant weight of it seems to lie in his upcoming animated series, Creature Commandos. There has been a lot of conversation around this seemingly minuscule series, which also happens to be setting up some of the most significant storylines in DC’s near future.
James Gunn’s Creature Commandos
One of the most unfortunate deaths in recent years has to have been that of Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag. It would seem that this painful wound is being ripped open again, as Flag’s father, Rick Flag Sr., is making his way into the franchise.
While many would be excited solely based on this news, it would seem that the character is entering the universe with one goal; revenge. Could Amanda Waller help Flag Sr. kill his son’s killer?

When James Gunn took over as co-ceo of DC Studios, he made it very clear that he would like to bring some of his Marvel Studios actor friends over to the new universe he is crafting. In the world of comic books and their movie adaptations, no names come close to the behemoth production houses of Marvel and DC. The studio houses of the respective comic giants have held onto their cinematic universes and solo movies for decades now. In this aspect, Spider-Man from the former and Batman from the latter stands out as not only two of the most widely recognized superheroes around the world but also the characters with the most flicks to their name.
In this saga, two actors, namely John Leguizamo and Jim Carrey, carry their own distinct and disappointing tales of playing villains for such adaptations. While Marvel literally snatched the role out of the former’s hands, the latter’s outing as one of the most famed villains of DC turned out to be one of the worst iterations in comic book history. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was always intended to be the final Gotg movie (at least for the foreseeable future), and it served as a fitting send-off for the team - but it did also lay the groundwork for potential follow-ups/spin-offs at the same time.
One post-credits scene introduced a new incarnation of the Guardians led by Rocket Raccoon, and the other teased the possibility of a solo Star-Lord adventure, with Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) returning to Earth to reconnect with his grandfather.
Director James Gunn has previously addressed that final "The Legendary Star-Lord Will Return" title card, and it sounds like there are (or were) indeed tentative plans in place for a spin-off focusing on Quill's effort to adapt to life back on Terra.
"Oh, but not quite over. We always want to give somebody a little something special. And Chris and I, forever, have talked...

Superman director James Gunn revealed the first look at David Corenswet’s Superman suit, which was received by fans and audiences with mixed reactions. There were a lot of things in the suit that fans took issue with, chief among them the way it looked like it was made of the same material used to make suits in the MCU, which takes away from DC’s unique visual style.

Casting Chris Pratt as Star-Lord was a pretty big gamble for Marvel. After all, to most of us he was the man-child Andy Dwyer on Parks and Recreation and nothing more. Fortunately for Pratt and the MCU, director James Gunn saw something special in him. While a number of actors also auditioned for the part, one who still remembers that moment and why he didn’t land Peter Quill is Joel Edgerton, who is well aware he just didn’t understand the tone they were going for.
Appearing on The Playlist’s Bingeworthy podcast (via Variety), Joel Edgerton remembered Guardians of the Galaxy being one of the most high-profile projects he missed out on, probably for good reason. “Star-Lord’s a good one, actually, because I, unlike Chris [Pratt], didn’t quite sort of understand the tone of it the way he did and the way that those guys did. Up, Up, and Away! Truth, Justice, and The American Way. These immediately cause comic fans to conjure up one specific character, The Big Blue Boy Scout. Superman. Heralded as the one that started the superhero boom in comics way back in 1938, there have been a lot of live-action versions over the years. Last year’s Flash movie highlighted some of the more popular ones and even one that had never actually been put on film. With James Gunn taking over the Dcu and using a new Superman film as the starting line, what can we expect from the upcoming film?

Romance tropes always play a crucial role in superhero films, as it enriches the plot and adds another layer of complexity to the characters’ personalities. While romance enables its viewers to relate to the film, the superhero genre always struggles to incorporate the ideas in their movies. Such was the case in the original Zack Snyder’s Justice League, until Avengers: Endgame directors approved of the unprecedented idea.

In the DC universe, the rivalry of Batman and Superman stands tall as one of the most iconic and enduring dynamics. The rivalry originates from the clash of ideologies and their take on justice. However, the Rebel Moon filmmaker decided to take their iconic rivalry to another level as he decided to put the Caped Crusader and The Daily Planet’s reporter in a relationship after Superman’s demise in the original plot of Justice League.

For Keanu Reeves, the foreboding shadow of violence has loomed large over his reputation as Mr. Nicest Guy in Hollywood ever since he retracted out of Oliver Stoneʼs Platoon in 1986. His decision to avoid on-screen brutality lasted all but 8 years before his action-man persona took over Hollywood and charmed critics and fans alike in the adrenaline-chasing blockbuster Speed in 1994.
What followed soon after was a gallery of his lifeʼs work encompassed within the works of the Wachowskisʼ The Matrix trilogy (1999-2003), Constantine (2005), 47 Ronin (2013), and most importantly, the franchise of John Wick (2014-present).

In their announcement of the rebooted Dcu, Gunn, and Safran emphasized that nearly nothing from the old Dceu would carry over into the new cinematic universe.
The exceptions were ‘Peacemaker’ Season 1 and the character Blue Beetle, with Gunn assuring fans of a seamless transition into the second season of ‘Peacemaker’ without confusion.
The most recent announcement regarding the show complicates matters, as it appears that another project, ‘The Suicide Squad,’ is now considered canon to the Dcu. Frank Grillo has been cast as Rick Flag Sr. in ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2, having already been confirmed to voice the character for the animated show. This aligns with Gunn’s earlier statement about wanting voice actors to also portray their characters in live-action projects within the Dcu.
Following the announcement, it was confirmed that Flag Sr. will have unresolved issues with Peacemaker, stemming from Peacemaker’s role in the death of Flag Jr. in ‘The Suicide Squad.

DC Studios has been in a bit of trouble as they have attempted to rescue the sinking ship of the superhero slates getting released. With James Gunn taking over as the co-ceo of the superhero brand with Peter Safran, Warner Brothers is expecting a ray of sunshine. Gunn’s tenure in DC has started, but the beginning of his new version of DC Universe is yet to roll out, which will officially begin with his upcoming movie Superman. Failure of the recent DC flops was a huge question mark on several heroes’ return— Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, Ezra Miller’s The Flash, and Zachary Levi’s Shazam 2. But with Gunn’s takeover, the potential comeback has been slim to none.

Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel starring Henry Cavill as Superman gave insight into the origin story of the titular DC hero. Despite the Kryptonian villain General Zod and the gravity of the narrative, the movie failed to have an astonishing mark among critics as the ambitious Snyderverse movie was able to claim only a 56% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/ Superman in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel
One of the reasons behind the criticism was, of course, the inherent dark tone of the narrative but this also raises a series of questions for other DC projects including Batman. If the movie was targeted for the dark tone, Russell Crowe who played Superman’s biological father, Jor-el, believes that the criticism of the movie based on the darker tone does not fit anywhere.

No matter how dire the circumstances, Batman is known for his unwavering “no-kill” code, which forbids him from taking a life in DC Comics. However, in Injustice God Among Us: Year Three, Bruce Wayne breaks his own rule to protect one of his dearest friends, Superman.
As everyone knows, the Joker from DC is one of the vilest, vicious, and most depraved supervillains. Nevertheless, Superman is restricted by the same code that keeps Batman from killing the Clown Prince of Crime. For similar reasons, both DC superheroes have strong moral codes prohibiting them from killing their enemies. Yet, in recent years, DC comic writers have endeavored to differentiate between the two.

One need only look at James Gunn to realize that not all good things in life come in the form of blessings and opportunities. Some of them appear in a red, white, and blue costumed dysfunctional superhero who vows to bring peace to the world, even if he has to kill every man, woman, and child for it. John Cena’s iconic Peacemaker returns to Dcu to get what he wants, even with James Gunn standing in his way.

‘Peacemaker’: Frank Grillo To Reprise His Animated ‘Creature Commandos’ Role In Live-Action Season 2
James Gunn’s series “Peacemaker,” starring John Cena, will be one of the rare DC properties that will carry over into the newly rebooted and reset DC Universe. While Gunn’s new DC Studios basically scrapped much of the past Dceu a new casting announcement for the second “Peacemaker” season is highlighting some of the connective tissue he intends to bring to the new DC.

Marvel actor and all-around badass Frank Grillo is trading his crossbones for stars and stripes after joining the cast of Peacemaker Season 2 for DC. Grillo is lacing up his boots to play Rick Flag Sr. for the sophomore season of James Gunn’s superhero series, starring John Cena as Christopher “Chris” Smith, aka Peacemaker. Rick Flag Sr. is the father of Rick Flag Jr., played by Joel Kinnaman in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad and Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. Cena’s Peacemaker killed Rick Flag Jr. in The Suicide Squad, leading me to think it’s time for revenge.
Before Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. appears in Peacemaker Season 2, he’ll debut in animated form in the upcoming Max series Creature Commandos. The monster-centric animated series revolves around a black ops team working for Viola Davis’s Amanda Waller.

Frank Grillo was sorely underutilised in the MCU. After first playing Brock Rumlow for a memorable supporting turn in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, he returned as Crossbones in Captain America: Civil War...and immediately died.
The actor got a cameo in Avengers: Endgame and has lent his voice to What If...?, but it's looking like he'll have much more to do in the Dcu.
After being cast as Rick Flag Sr. in DC Studios' animated Creature Commandos, it's been confirmed today that Grillo will make the leap to live-action and reprise the role in Peacemaker season 2.
"Pleased to announce the great [Frank Grillo] will be reprising the role of Rick Flag, Sr - the role he’ll first play in animated form in 'Creature Commando's - throughout Season 2 of 'Peacemaker,'" DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn said on Instagram. "Christopher Smith and Rick Sr have a little unfinished business to take care of.

More than two years after "Peacemaker" season 1 aired its finale, the second season of the DC series is finally coming together. DC Studios co-head James Gunn has revealed an intriguing bit of casting for the show as production gets going, with Frank Grillo returning to the DC Universe as Rick Flag Sr. We say "returning" because Grillo is already playing the part in the upcoming animated TV series "Creature Commandoes." So yes, he will be making the jump from animation to live-action. This brings a plan Gunn has had in place since the beginning of this DC reboot full circle.

On Monday, DC Studios co-ceo and Superman's director James Gunn shared a first look at David Corenswet's Man of Steel. The image didn't feature the hero striking an iconic pose; instead, he was putting his boots on one at a time, just like the rest of us.
The meaning behind the photo was obvious, but the delivery was flawed. Fans immediately zeroed in on the suit's flaws, including the fact that the Kryptonian sitting down meant it appeared baggy or ill-fitting in places.
Then, there was the glowing orb in the background which, for some reason, Superman was seemingly ignoring. It seems the idea was to tease the movie's villains (likely Mongul), but again, the presentation let it down.
Shortly after the reveal dropped, we asked for your opinions on the costume and thousands of you voted. Now, we have the results!
33.34% of you declared Superman's suit "Meh.

Despite mostly positive initial reactions, Patty Jenkins Wonder Woman 1984 was widely panned by critics and fans alike when it was released, but the movie does still have its share of loyal supporters - and can count one of its stars among them.
After being killed off at the end of the first movie, Chris Pine's Steve Trevor returned under somewhat bizarre circumstances in the sequel for a reunion with Gal Gadot's Amazonian hero. In the end, Diana was forced to "wish" Trevor back out of existence in order to defeat Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal), and the couple shared an emotional farewell.
While chatting about his most iconic roles with Entertainment Weekly, Pine defended WW84, and said he believed the movie was given such a hard time because it focused more on "forgiveness and compassion" than the usual superhero fare.

WB’s live-service video game, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was one of the most anticipated video games of the year. However, upon its release, the game did not quite meet the expectations of the fans, though the idea sounds quite intriguing on paper, it could not be executed properly. This is quite surprising because the game is developed by Rocksteady Studios, the same studio that developed the Batman: Arkham trilogy.

To add to the game’s disappointment, it has mixed reviews on Steam, coming directly from DC fans, where they voice their annoyance at the performance of the live service game not matching Batman: Arkham Universe. Marvel Studios' hunt for Star-Lord didn't result in quite as much attention as some other MCU roles. However, the decision to enlist Chris Pratt as the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise's lead generated a lot of discussion among fans.
It didn't take him long to prove James Gunn had made a perfect choice by choosing him to play Star-Lord. However, in an interview with The Playlist, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Dark Matter star Joel Edgerton has left us wondering "What If...?" by revealing he also auditioned to play Peter Quill.

Production continues on DC Studios' Superman, and just days after sharing that widely discussed first look at David Corenswet's Man of Steel, director James Gunn has now shared a new behind-the-scenes photo.
This one highlights comic book luminaries invited to set by the filmmaker and executive, including current Superman writers Jason Aaron and Joshua Williamson, along with legends like Dan Jurgens and Jerry Ordway.
Justice League International's Kevin Maguire was also on hand, as was Mister Terrific's co-creator John Ostrander and DC Comics heavyweights Jim Lee and Scott Snyder. 2023 was a rough year for superhero movies. Both Marvel Studios and Warner Bros.' Dceu struggled to deliver movies which resonated with fans and filmgoers, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods failed to take flight when it opened last March.
Reviews were split rather than outright negative, but the movie still only grossed $134 million worldwide. It came as a shock after the success of 2019's Shazam!, and the character's future is now uncertain with DC Studios set to reboot the Dcu beginning with 2025's Superman.
We were recently fortunate enough to speak with Billy Batson actor Asher Angel about his role in the edge-of-your-seat thriller, Lazareth. We'll bring you the full conversation with him, and co-star Ashley Judd, soon.
In the meantime, we have an excerpt from our conversation in which Angel addresses the Shazam! sequel's struggles, his interest in reprising the role, what was originally planned for the franchise,...

Actor Grant Gustin wore the Flash suit for nine years as he starred as the titular character in The CW’s The Flash. A part of the Arrowverse series of TV shows, The Flash saw Barry Allen become the scarlet speedster after being struck by lightning in Central City. The series sees him fight various antagonists and also find the killer of his mother.
Though he was grateful for getting the opportunity to play the character, Gustin reportedly suffered while putting on the costume for the show. The Flash costume included a red one-piece suit and a face mask that covered most of his face. The actor mentioned how tough it was to get in and out of the suit and how he used to spend hours in the suit while filming.

In the first week of May 2024, the first images of James Gunn's Superman were posted, with David Corenswet now inhabiting the role of the Man of Steel.
Looking at Corenswet, it's easy to see that this Superman is a throwback to Christopher Reeve's groovy interpretation of the Superman of 1978.
Not just a superhuman being but a likable dork with a heart of gold, the Superman that baby boomers fell in love with.
It's the opposite of what Zack Snyder envisioned with Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice -- an aging Superman feeling alienated from humankind and looking downright surly.
(The face of Henry Cavill's Superman, that imperious, disenchanted, loveless face, was a work of art. He would do a fantastic job as a villain for a change.)
Despite perfect casting, Snyder went full Emo Superman with his Dcu, adding a splash of moodiness...
