Challengers and The Fall Guy prove that the movie star is still alive – and can make a huge difference to a film’s success. A few thoughts…
The movie star is dead. Or at least our idea of stardom may have drastically changed. After streaming has become a credible rival to cinemas, it’s not so much star power that necessarily gets people to spend their hard-earned money on a movie ticket. Sure, the Swifties ran to the cinemas to watch The Eras Tour, but Taylor Swift is hardly a movie star, despite her turn in Cats.
Ana De Armas blames social media for the lack of movie stars. “I feel like the new generations don’t have that concept, because of social media,” de Armas told Vanity Fair in 2023. “There is so much information out there and oversharing. The concept of a movie star is someone untouchable you only see onscreen.

Legendary film editor Thelma Schoonmaker is honoring the films of filmmaking duo Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger with an upcoming retrospective at MoMA.
Titled “Cinema Unbound: The Creative Worlds of Powell and Pressburger,” the screening series is presented in collaboration with the BFI and will take place from June 21 to July 31. The program includes more than 50 films — many of which are new restorations — and was curated by conservation experts, archivists, and curators at the BFI National Archive.
Oscar-winning editor Schoonmaker will open the series on June 21 with an introduction to the new digital restoration of “Black Narcissus” (1947). Schoonmaker was married to British director Powell from 1984 until his death in 1990.
Powell and Pressburger’s cultural legacy is most notably recognized in their film “The Red Shoes” (1948), which has inspired sequences in films such as Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers,” Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan,” and Martin Scorsese’s “Raging Bull,” which Schoonmaker edited.

The Fall Guy Box Office (North America): Projections Ahead Of Its Release( Photo Credit – YouTube )
After ruling the theatres in 2023 with their individual movies, Barbie and Oppenheimer, Ryan Gosling, and Emily Blunt have teamed up for an action comedy this summer. The Fall Guy by director David Leitch is all set to hit the theatres this Friday, and all eyes are on its box office numbers. Keep scrolling for more deets.
Recently, the film’s producer, Kelly McCormick, opened up about Ryan and Emily’s chemistry in the movie and their characters’ relationship. According to her, it is messy and uncomfortable. The film has already received an impressive 87% score on the Tomatometer on the Rotten Tomatoes website. It is based on the 1980s TV series of the same name about stunt performers. For the unversed, its director was a stunt performer before becoming a filmmaker. He was a stunt double for Brad Pitt.

Kristen Stewart and Katy O’Brien excel in Saint Maud director Rose Glass’ sophomore feature. Here’s our review of Love Lies Bleeding.
If there was any concern or doubt that Rose Glass, the director of 2019’s Saint Maud, wasn’t the real deal, her new film puts all that to rest. Glass’ second feature, Love Lies Bleeding, is a haunting, pulpy affair about the whirlwind romance between a gym manager and an aspiring bodybuilder.
In a star-making turn, Katy O’Brian plays Jackie, who runs into Kristen Stewart’s Lou on her way to Las Vegas for a bodybuilding competition. Their chemistry is sizzling, but Lou’s troubled, criminally inclined family soon complicates their romance.
The cast is rounded out by Jena Malone, Dave Franco and Ed Harris, who sports a particularly impressive hair-do. In a lesser film such ridiculous, over-the-top hair extensions might be a distraction, but here they only add to the uneasy,...

Shudder, the go-to spot for horror buffs, smashed its records last weekend with “Late Night With The Devil,” a horror gem that became the top catch for Shudder and AMC+ during its debut. Horror Geek Life reports that the film wasted no time making history, hitting the ground running on Shudder on April 19 and securing the platform’s most triumphant opening weekend yet.
Upon hitting theaters, it promptly seized the crown as distributor IFC Films’ most lucrative opening weekend in the U.S., amassing $2.8 million in domestic box office revenue. According to Forbes, despite its limited release in just 1,034 American theaters, the Australian movie generated $9.8 million in revenue during its U.S. theatrical run.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains plot details for “Challengers,” now playing in theaters.
All Tashi Duncan wanted was great tennis. At the end of Luca Guadagnino’s buzzy tennis drama “Challengers,” the camera freezes on Tashi (Zendaya) as she screams “come on!” following a match point volley for the ages between competitors Patrick Zweig (Josh O’Connor) and Art Donaldson (Mike Faist). The volley got so intense that it ends with Art leaping over the net and falling into Patrick’s arms. Is Tashi mortified or elated? Zendaya admitted in an outtake from the actors’ recent interview with The New York Times’ Kyle Buchanan that the ending might be “confusing” to some.
“My mom read the ending so different,” Zendaya said. “My mom is like, ‘She’s pissed because they realize that they don’t need her anymore.’ I was like, ‘But I smile a little bit at the end!’ My...

Zendaya’s brand new romantic sports drama Challengers has been at everyone’s hearing pretty much before the movie finally hit the cinemas last week. The film also starring The Crown’s star Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist eventually made all the hype in social media work for itself and didn’t take much time to dethrone Alex Garland’s post-apocalyptic hit Civil War from the box office top.
Though all the stars seem to still align for Challengers’ blast as the movie started its theatrical run only several days ago, some earlier predictions for its success show that it actually could’ve done better.
According to earlier reports that were released ahead of Challengers’ world premiere in theaters, the movie was projected to gross at least $20 million in the domestic run while the international numbers were supposed to ultimately cement Luca Guadagnino’s drama’s hit status.

What should I tell you about Challengers? Perhaps that it's not as much about tennis as you may think, and that it is also not as gay as you think. Or that the performances were great, and the music by Trent Reznor really worked as a juxtaposition to dramatic scenes. That there was a lot off slow-mo. It is a fun movie. Challengers, directed by Luca Guadagnino, is about three competitive tennis players who meet at a young age, and the way their paths diverge and converge over the years. Pseudo-celebrity Tashi Duncan (Zendaya) has an injury early on in her career, instead becoming a coach, which suits her analytical and blunt personality. Close friends Art (Mike Faist) and Patrick (Josh O'Connor) are both competing...

A whole lot of moviegoers this past weekend probably just became enthusiastic tennis fans, so it's important that they know just how well the sport lends itself to the type of thrill-a-minute drama on display throughout "Challengers." (Be sure to read /Film's review by Witney Seibold if you haven't yet.) As Zendaya's Tashi Duncan proves on multiple occasions, the art of being really good at hitting a ball with a racket can feel like an interpretive dance ... provided you have the right partner. Both players tune out the larger world in the heat of the moment and, in Tashi's words, "go somewhere beautiful" together. In that light, it's no wonder the actual filming of director Luca Guadagnino's latest movie naturally lent itself to moments of spontaneity and improvisation between the main trio of actors.

Although “Challengers” screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes and director Luca Guadagnino are no strangers to working with each other, their collaboration process on the upcoming film “Queer,” an adaptation of a William S. Burroughs novel that will star Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey, was entirely different.
The Black List alum previously told IndieWire on the red carpet for the Los Angeles premiere of “Challengers” that accepting the task of his first adapted screenplay was a “no brainer.” Elaborating on how exactly the task of making “Queer,” a film adaptation both Guadagnino and other filmmakers had been chasing, came to be, Kuritzkes later told IndieWire over Zoom, “One day, on the set of ‘Challengers,’ [Luca] just gave me this book and said, ‘Read this tonight and tell me if you want to write it for me.’”
He added, “I was so completely honored and touched that Luca would trust me with this movie. And...

Josh O’Connor has his sights set on his dream role: playing a “darker version” of Willy Wonka.
Much like his “Challengers” co-star and “West Side Story” alum Mike Faist, O’Connor is looking to lean into the musical theater elements of the famed fictional chocolatier. Timothée Chalamet most recently played the Roald Dahl character in “Wonka,” with Johnny Depp and Gene Wilder leading other iterations of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”
In a recent WSJ Magazine video, O’Connor revealed that Wonka is his ideal part.
“I would love to play Willy Wonka, but like a dark Willy Wonka,” he said. “I know they’ve just made a ‘Wonka’ film with Timothée Chalamet, but I would really like to play a story of darker version of him.”
According to O’Connor, the original portrayal of the character by actor Wilder is a haunting performance.
“I think Gene Wilder’s version of him is very dark.

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for “Challengers.”]
Zendaya is admitting that yes, the ending of “Challengers” can be considered “confusing,” especially since her own mother had an entirely different take on it than she did.
The actress told New York Times journalist Kyle Buchanan that it makes sense why the ambiguous final scene can be “confusing” for audiences.

Mufasa: The Lion King Teaser Trailer: Blue Ivy Carter Makes Her Debut! (Photo Credit – Youtube)
Mufasa: The Lion King Teaser trailer has been dropped by Disney, and the live-action film, which is a prequel to 2019’s The Lion King, will be released worldwide on December 20. However, the trailer would put you to disbelieving the amount that must have been spent on this so-called CGI film that has been unnecessarily called a live-action film.
The one-minute, 34-second trailer makes one thing very clear: the animals are more expressive this time, and some research and hard work has been done at that end. But the question lies – Is Mufasa’s back story important, and was this prequel necessary?

However, the trailer would put you to disbelieving the amount that must have been spent on this so-called CGI film that has been unnecessarily called a live-action film.
The one-minute, 34-second trailer makes one thing very clear: the animals are more expressive this time, and some research and hard work has been done at that end. But the question lies – Is Mufasa’s back story important, and was this prequel necessary?

The Mummy Box Office (Domestic): Here’s How Much It Earned On It Re-Release Opening Weekend(Photo Credit – IMDb)
Universal Pictures is bringing some classic movies back to the theatres in the United States. On Friday, the fan-favorite adventure movie The Mummy was re-released. People went into the theatres despite several other releases like Challengers and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire running there to boost the classic’s box office collections.
The movie will turn twenty-five this year and will always be one of the best movies about Egypt’s mummies in cinema history. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz‘s chemistry captivated us and will always remain close to our hearts. The film did well at the box office back then and has managed to bring some loyal audience to the theatres.
Earlier this month reports about The Mummy re-releasing in the theatres were all over the media.

If there was any doubt at all that Zendaya is one of her generation's biggest A-list stars, this past weekend just squashed it. The actress had a bunch of big hits to her name, including the most recent "Spider-Man" trilogy, but she had yet to have the opportunity to open an original movie with her as the central star. Well, she did just that over the weekend as the R-rated, original tennis drama "Challengers" hit theaters and topped the box office with a $15 million take domestically. Very few non-horror, original movies have broken through in the pandemic era big enough to take the number one spot on the charts. That was just the tip of the iceberg.
While Zendaya's latest was topping the charts, "Dune: Part Two" still found itself in the top ten in its ninth weekend of release. Director Dennis Villeneuve's sequel to 2021's "Dune" added $1.9 million to its ever-growing total domestically,...

One of the most anticipated and hottest films of 2024 is finally here. We are talking about Zendaya‘s Challengers which was memed to death for a threesome scene that was shown in the trailer but if you have seen the film then you know that the brilliance of the film is much more than that one scene. Directed by Call Me By Your Name‘s Luca Guadagnino from a screenplay by Justin Kuritzkes, the sports romantic drama follows the story of a talented tennis player Tashi, and her twisted relationship with two tennis players, one of whom is her husband now. Challengers stars Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O’Connor in the lead role with Jordan Thompson, Faith Fay, Hailey Gates, and Tierre Diaz starring in supporting roles. So, if you loved the story of ambition and toxic relationships in Challengers you should check out these films with similar themes next.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Box Office Collection Day 31: Hits 1 Crore Mark For The Last Time ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
For the last time in its theatrical run, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has seen 1 crore mark being crossed at the box office. It was a push for that to happen, especially after Friday had dipped to 46 lakhs and then premium IMAX and 4Dx screens too had gone to Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Still, courtesy the equity that the film has managed to build for the last few weeks, there is a residual audience that’s stepping in, and that’s what’s keeping it alive.
This was seen from 1.14 crore more than it gathered to collect in theatres on Sunday. It’s good to see that at least there is one holdover release for over a month that’s still managing to collect some moolah at least, though...

'Challengers' screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes thinks the "cinematic" nature of tennis made it ideal for a movie. The scribe has penned the script for Luca Guadagnino's new movie that focuses on a love triangle on the tennis circuit and realised that the sport was ripe for the big screen after watching the controversial US Open final between Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka in 2018.Justin told Variety: "I just happened to be watching the US Open in 2018. It was the match between Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams in the final, and it was very controversial because Serena Williams got penalised for receiving coaching from the sidelines. She got very upset and said that she didn't do that – but that was the first time I had heard about that rule."Immediately, it struck me as really cinematic, that you're all alone on the court, that there's only one other person...

Spoiler Alert: This article contains details about Challengers.
Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers opened at the top of the U.S. box office, and one scene from the movie went viral on social media.
The particular scene involves Josh O’Connor’s Patrick and Mike Faist’s Art eating churros. At this moment in the film, Patrick visits his girlfriend Tashi (Zendaya) at Stanford but first catches up with his best friend Art in a cafeteria, where they bond over the doughy pastry.
“What I will say is…that was my first churro and I hadn’t eaten anything that day,” O’Connor said in an interview with Capital FM. “So I was starving and tasted my first churro – and churros are extraordinary. So I ate my one and then I ate his [pointing to Faist].”

Josh O’Connor is currently starring in Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers and recently revealed what character he would love to play in the future.
In a recent interview, the actor said he is open to giving like to a “dark” version of the Willy Wonka character from Roal Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
“I would love to play Willy Wonka,” O’Connor said in an interview with WSJ Magazine. “But like a dark Willy Wonka.”
O’Connor acknowledged that Timothée Chalamet starred in Wonka, an origin story to the Willy Wonka character, recently.
“But I would really like to play a story of darker version of him,” he added.
The Crown actor also noted that Gene Wilder’s version of the character from the 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory “is very dark.”

Spoilers for "Challengers" follow.
I wouldn't be the first writer to suggest that playing competitive sports and f***ing are similar activities. Both are physically exhaustive, both demand at least one partner and, when done right, both leave their players on an emotional high that uplifts their tired bodies. Sex isn't always a competition for dominance (though it certainly can be), but like when you're shooting hoops or boxing an opponent, you have to study the other's body language and react without a moment to spare. Actions speak louder than words, and when you play a game against someone, you reveal yourself almost as much as when you get naked.
That's the conceit of "Challengers," the new tennis romantic drama starring Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O'Connor as three tennis players who share a storied love triangle. Art Donaldson (Faist) and Patrick Zweig (O'Connor) are teenage best friends who fall for the same girl,...

This article will contain some spoilers for Challengers, so reader beware if you haven’t seen Luca Guadagnino’s new film…
Tennis isn’t for everyone – some people just want their Spidey fix. That’s what happens in one scene of Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers, where the daughter of Tashi (Zendaya) and Art (Mike Faist) asks to watch a Spider-Verse movie instead of tennis. But as the director explains, it wasn’t meant to be directly linked to Zendaya’s own Spider-Man movies.
As Guadagnino told Entertainment Weekly, those thinking that Spider-Verse moment in Challengers was an intentional easter egg are mistaken, as it was really just out of circumstances. “When you get rights for something to be used in a movie, it’s very complicated. Amy Pascal, our amazing producer, was of help there. I said, ‘Amy, can we use one of your catalog titles so it’s going...

Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” (Amazon MGM) nearly doubled any other gross in its opening weekend, taking an easy #1 with an estimated $15 million. That’s respectable for the Zendaya-starring erotic tennis drama.
However, another week with this level of a #1 film isn’t what theaters need. After a month of intriguing new releases, none of them are likely to gross as much as $75 million in the U.S./Canada. Theaters faced a double burden — too few films released, and too few perform — but May could be different: It starts the summer season next week with “The Fall Guy” (Universal).
“Challengers” was not an automatic sell. It has Zendaya and excellent reviews (83 Metacritic score). Recent R-rated, sexually charged dramas are unusual these days. “Saltburn,” also from Amazon MGM, grossed $11 million in its release — $4 million less than the “Challengers” opening. “No Hard Feelings” with Jennifer Lawrence had the same opening gross last summer.

Luca Guadagnino’s recently released Challengers is doing wonders at the box office. So much so that media outlets predicted a staggering box office collection within the opening weekend. Well, a lot of credit for the success and popularity of the film undoubtedly goes to the steamy scenes between Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O’Connor.

But hold on, the things that are serving as a source of attraction for audiences towards the movie weren’t actually in the script. This means that the pivotal three-way kiss between Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O’Connor, almost didn’t happen, until Luca Guadagnino changed the course of Justin Kuritzkes’ original script.

As expected, Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers scored an easy win this weekend, with a $15 million weekend, just a touch softer than we predicted earlier this week. The tennis-cantered love triangle was no doubt boosted by Zendaya’s star power, with her hotter than ever in the wake of Dune: Part Two’s blockbuster showing this winter. IMAX screens were dominated by Zendaya in one form or another, with both Challengers and Dune 2 playing in the format this weekend thanks to the latter’s re-release.
Notably, the film posted Guadagnino’s best box office opening to date, with the weekend total more than doubling the total take of his previous biggest opener, Bones and All. It’ll be interesting to see if Challengers can hold up in the coming weeks, with The Fall Guy opening next weekend and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes opening the weekend after. With...

Zendaya seems to have a busy 2024 as her second release in two months recently opened in cinemas. The Dune: Part Two star recently featured in Luca Guadagnino’s sports romance Challengers, which also stars Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor. The film was set to release in 2023 but was postponed when the SAG-AFTRA strikes began.
Zendaya’s film has been in the news due to its eroticism and romance. The film follows the actress as a former tennis player who is caught in a battle between her husband and a former lover, who will be facing each other on the court. One scene in particular seems to have caught the attention of fans as it bears resemblance to a popular scene in Timothée Chalamet’s Call Me By Your Name.

Game, set, now what to make of this match?
“Challengers,” a sexy, subversive, R-rated drama set in the world of tennis, easily took first place at a sluggish domestic box office this weekend with $15 million from 3,477 locations. On one hand, it’s a respectable result for an artsy movie aimed at discerning, adult audiences, but what keeps it from being a championship performance is that “Challengers” has a hefty $55 million budget (to say nothing of its marketing costs). The Amazon MGM Studios release will need strong word-of-mouth if it’s going to keep rallying — and next week brings Universal’s “The Fall Guy,” a Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt action-comedy that marks the start of summer blockbuster season. The competition only stands to get fiercer from here.

Luca Guadagnino, director of Challengers, took a less intense approach to shooting the new Zendaya movie, a method that David Fincher or Stanley Kubrick might not have approved of. Fincher, renowned for his exhaustive number of takes per scene, received a subtle jab when Guadagnino expressed his disdain for such a method, deeming it torture for the actors.

As Luca Guadagnino’s acclaimed tennis film Challengers makes its case for sporting immortality, critic Guy Lodge chooses 20 of the genre’s undisputed heavyweights
Challengers reviewed by Wendy Ide
Analogies of life as sport have been exhausted by every Pe teacher in existence. In the movies, however, they’re eternally renewable. Take Challengers, Luca Guadagnino’s sleek, sexy, sweat-drenched new film, which hits every metaphor you might expect in its story of three tennis pros locked in a tense love triangle: games are won and lost, points scored, doubles partners swapped, and so on. Shot and paced with the ricocheting energy of a great tennis match, it’s a sports movie that, like many a classic of the genre, understands the parallels between sport and cinema as two great crowd-pleasing pastimes.
The sports movie is pretty much as old as movies themselves: for early silent-cinema pioneers at the turn of the 20th century,...

Luca Guadagnino’s sizzling, sharply scripted drama, co-starring Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist, is such fun it’s almost indecent
Nobody harnesses horniness quite like Luca Guadagnino. With his lavish, luxurious portrait of forbidden lust, the Tilda Swinton-starring I Am Love, Guadagnino embraced one of cinema’s most cliched symbolic sensual devices, filling the frame with come-hither shots of delectable food. But somehow, in his hands, this hackneyed metaphor feels fresh, and the film is a skin-tingling exploration of erotic tension. Then there’s Call Me By Your Name, with its scenes of peach-grappling and languid yearning, in which even the spaces between the characters are charged with longing. And Bones and All, which virtually rebrands cannibalism as a legitimate kink. But even by Guadagnino’s highly charged standards, Challengers is an absurdly sexy movie. With its power plays and exquisite cruelty, the shimmering beauty of its three leads and their tantalising interlocking desires,...

Luca Guadagnino didn't deliberately insert a 'Spider-Man' "in-joke" into 'Challengers'.The director's new movie stars Zendaya as tennis prodigy Tashi Duncan, and a scene features the alter ego of the actress - who plays Mj opposite her real-life boyfriend Tom Holland in the superhero films - talking with her husband Art (Mike Faist) when they are interrupted by their daughter Lily, who asks if she can watch the 'Spider Man: Into the Spider-Verse' animated movie. And while fans of the superhero saga were thrilled by the Easter egg, Luca admitted he didn't think about the tie to Zendaya when the line was written. He explained to EW.com: “When you get rights for something to be used in a movie, it’s very complicated.“Amy Pascal, our amazing producer, was of help there. Spoiler Alert: This article contains details about Challengers.
Luca Guadagnino, director of Challengers, inadvertently linked his latest film to the Spider-Man universe by having Zendaya be that connection.
Zendaya plays Mj opposite Tom Holland in the latest Spider-Man movies, and she is currently starring as tennis prodigy Tashi in Challengers.
At a point in the film, Tashi is discussing tennis with her husband Art, played by Mike Faist, when their daughter Lily walks in and asks if she can watch the animated Spider-Verse. The Easter egg lit up Spider-Man fans when the Marvel superhero was mentioned.
Although Zendaya doesn’t voice a character in the Spider-Verse animated film, she is part of the Spider-Verse at Sony. Guadagnino is now revealing that the connection wasn’t on purpose.
“When you get rights for something to be used in a movie, it’s very complicated,” Guadagnino said in an interview with EW.

Luca Guadagnino Says No Movie Should Have ‘90 Takes’ Per Scene: ‘Why Do You Have to Torture People?’
Many film directors, including the likes of David Fincher and Stanley Kubrick, openly believe in capturing endless takes of their actors as a way of giving space to the unexpected. But Luca Guadagnino is coming out against the philosophy. In a recent New York Times interview for “Challengers”, Guadagnino explained why he’s happy to walk away after one or two takes of a scene. “I hate pushing,” he said. “If it’s great, why do you have to torture people?”
“It’s exciting when you observe performance,” Guadagnino continued. “I will quit the moment in which I know that I’m going to be lazy or bored or I don’t have this energy of seeing performance happening — which, by the way, doesn’t need to take 90 takes. I think this movie is an average of one or two.”
