Warner Bros.’ comedy-drama Our Brand Is Crisis has added two new stars to its line-up. The remake of the 2005 documentary continues to attract a wealth of talent, and today we’ve got news of its latest additions. Climbing aboard the political expose are Joaquim De Almeida (Fast Five) and Zoe Kazan (What If, Ruby Sparks).
Based on filmmaker Rachel Boynton’s documentary, the film will further explore what sounds to be a fascinating tale of political ideals gone awry. The story will be based around the exploits of two of President Clinton’s former political advisors, James Carville and Stan Greenberg, and their involvement in the re-election of a Bolivian president.
The casting announcements so far have addressed who’ll be playing a great deal of the main characters. Except, that is, for the Bolivian president himself. Thanks to The Wrap, we now know that role will be portrayed by De Almeida,...

Following big success with Gravity last year, plans for Sandra Bullock to return to Warner Bros. are solidifying as the studio has just given a greenlight the political dramedy Our Brand is Crisis. The project has been in development for years at George Clooney's Smokehouse Pictures, and Bullock began circling the project late last year during awards season. Now it seems to be coming together as Variety has learned Pineapple Express and Prince Avalanche director David Gordon Green is set to direct the film based on Rachel Boynton's 2005 documentary of the same name about American political strategies used in Bolivia. The documentary followed real-life consultants James Carville and Stan Greenberg, but it sounds this film will follow fictional political consultants instead. The film is described as a satirical comedy about American spin doctors competing in the same Presidential election in the South American nation. As previously Bullock would play “Calamity” Jane Bodine,...

Sandra Bullock has been loosely attached to political drama-comedy Our Brand Is Crisis since late last year, back when she was out stumping for Gravity’s award campaign and talked to co-star George Clooney about the film, one he was producing. Things have moved on since then, and David Gordon Green has, according to Variety, won the job of directing the movie, a move that in turn has spurred Bullock to fully commit to it.Crisis is adapted from Rachel Boynton’s 2005 documentary, which saw President Clinton’s former advisors James Carville and Stan Greenberg applying what they had learned in the trenches of American politics to a campaign in Bolivia, and the effects it has on the process. How exactly Bullock’s character will fit into the film is not clear right now, though chances are the plot will follow similar lines, ahd she might be a political specialist...

Sadly this year's Oscar hopeful The Monuments Men from director George Clooney was pushed back to February 2014. That likely puts it outside of any Oscar chances for that year (unless it pulls a Silence of the Lambs), but maybe a long-deveoping film from Clooney's Smokehouse Pictures can get the job done at some point down the road. The Wrap has word that Our Brand is Crisis, the political comedy adaptation of Rachel Boynton's 2005 doc of the same name has life again, this time with Clooney's Gravity co-star Sandra Bullock in early talks to lead the film about American political strategies being used in Bolivia. The documentary followed real-life consultants James Carville and Stan Greenberg, but it sounds this film will follow fictional political consultants instead. The film is described as a satirical comedy about American spin doctors competing in the same Presidential election in the South American nation. Bullock would play “Calamity” Jane Bodine,...

Given how much they learned about crisis while working on Gravity together, it hardly seems surprising that Sandra Bullock would end up in a George Clooney-produced film. And so it has come to pass, with Bullock in talks to star in Our Brand Is Crisis.Actually, the pair discussed the idea while on the long slog of press tours for Alfonso Cuaron’s space thriller. Crisis is adapted from Rachel Boynton’s 2005 documentary, which saw President Clinton’s former advisors James Carville and Stan Greenberg applying what they had learned in the trenches of American politics to a campaign in Bolivia, and the effects it has on the process.Despite the close relationship between Clooney and Bullock, this is far from a done deal. With the success of Gravity (and The Heat) still fresh, Bullock’s naturally being courted for several movies right now and Crisis is just one of them.

Chicago – With a wink and a smile, The Criterion Collection inducts Chris Hegedus and D.A. Pennebaker’s excellent “The War Room” into their arsenal eight months before the 2012 election. This riveting examination of the 1992 election from the winning side feels particularly relevant in today’s heated climate and the Blu-ray release also includes a stellar 2008 feature-length documentary called “Return to The War Room” in which the key players revisit the scene of the crime.
Blu-ray Rating: 4.5/5.0
Watching “The War Room” again one remembers the lightning in a bottle aspect of Clinton’s 1992 campaign. Seeing a glimpse of a young(er) Clinton is fascinating but the movie belongs to James Carville and George Stephanopoulos, the two men who really propelled Clinton into the White House. They were the right people at the right time for the right campaign. And the access granted to their influential and game-changing techniques was amazing. From...

J. Edgar (Warner Bros.) Director Clint Eastwood provides a rock-solid, albeit rather flat portrait of polarizing FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, covering his life from late teens to his death. Leonardo DiCaprio does an impressive turn as Hoover, never crossing the line into caricature, and creating a Hoover that is all too human, making for an all the more unsettling look at absolute power run amuck. Where the film stumbles is the love story at its core: Hoover’s relationship with longtime aide Clyde Tolson (Armie Hammer). In the hands of an openly-gay director like Gus Van Sant, this could have been a heartbreaking, tender story of forbidden (unrequited?) love, but Eastwood seems to tiptoe around their romance, with far too much delicacy and deference. The film works well when recreating the famous crimes and investigations which Hoover made his name on (the Lindbergh kidnapping,...

James Carville campaigns in The War Room.
Directed by renowned cinema verité filmmakers D. A. Pennebaker (Monterey Pop) and Chris Hegedus (Kings of Pastry), the 1993 documentary film The War Room focuses on Bill Clinton’s successful 1992 presidential campaign.
The 1992 presidential election was a triumph not only for Clinton but also for the new breed of strategists who guided him to the White House and changed the face of politics in the process. In their behind-closed-doors account of the campaign, Pennebaker and Hegedus follow the brainstorming and bull sessions of Clinton’s crack team of consultants — especially the folksy James Carville and the preppy George Stephanopoulos, who became media stars in their own right as they injected a fresh spirit and spontaneity into the process of campaigning.
Criterion’s DVD and Blu-ray editions of the acclaimed movie are highlighted by a restored high-definition digital transfer,...
