Co-founder of the Littlewood's Theatre Workshop in 1940 and continued to perform with the company for 30 years.
Was a left-wing radical in his youth.
First job as a junior accountancy clerk in Altrincham in 1937. At the same time, acted in repertory theatre, including at the Bristol Old Vic.
