Expect traditional release windows and drama at Paramount to be on the agenda.
CinemaCon, the annual convention of the National Association of Theatre Owners (Nato), is focused on the relationship between exhibitors and distributors. And like all long-time relationships, it is one that has learned to take the rough with the smooth. The talking points at this month’s event, held March 27-30 in Las Vegas, are likely to test this dynamic more than ever before.
Will there be a breakthrough on release windows?
While there have been experiments with the average 90-day theatrical window before a film moves on to home entertainment platforms, we are unlikely to see a dramatic paradigm shift at CinemaCon. AMC Entertainment CEO Adam Aron recently stirred the pot when he said he was intrigued by the notion of home viewing within several weeks of theatrical release if exhibitors could get a share of digital revenues. Updated: Shares in the streaming giant dropped around 15% after trading on Monday as the company missed its projections on subscriber growth for the second quarter.
However second-quarter earnings of $2.1bn were in line with Wall Street’s prediction of $2.11bn and gained 31% on the same period in 2015.
Netflix poured water on prospects of an imminent launch for China, saying in a letter to investors before Monday’s earnings call that the regulatory climate had become “more challenging” this year.
The company vowed to continue working towards a China launch, despite noting that Disney’s joint venture with Alibaba had closed down as had a service launched by Apple.
Turning to other markets, a concern of analysts, the company said efforts were underway to “localise” in Poland and Turkey with subtitling and dubbing.
With regard to subscriber losses, Netflix intimated this was due to the previously announced price rise and said in its letter: “We are growing, but not...

The video streaming market may be “approaching saturation” as it shows a slow growth rate for the first time, a new study has found. The study, conducted by research and consulting firm Strategy Analytics, found that U.S. consumers will spend $6.62 billion on video streaming services in 2016, which includes Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu. While this might mean a $1.19 billion, or 22 percent, increase from 2015, it’s actually lower that the previous year’s increase — $1.21 billion in 2015. Almost 60 percent of households in the U.S. subscribe to a video streaming service. Digital media director Michael Goodman added, “we put...

Gunnar Hansen was born in Reykjavik, Iceland on March 4, 1947, and he died this past weekend, on November 7, in his home in Northeast Harbor, Maine, from pancreatic cancer. In between those two dates he spent some of his formative years in Texas, where he worked as a bartender and a carpenter while attending the University of Texas at Austin. It was here where he tried out for an independent horror film being shot locally and, upon winning the role of Leatherface, the central figure within a demented family of cannibalistic killers, would begin the process of worming his way into not only a place at the table among the most recognizable and iconographic monsters in the annals of horror and pop culture in general, but also into 41 years’ worth of collective nightmares.

North America revenue from Ott (over the top) content is catching up with theatrical grosses as a study said projected numbers for 2014 will reach $10.7bn – a little under the record $10.9bn set by theatrical distributors in 2013.
Furthermore the report by research and consulting firm Strategy Analytics predicted Ott video revenues would overtake those of DVD within five years.
Consumer use of subscription VOD services like Netflix and Hulu will be the biggest driver in Ott video revenue growth of 21% this year, the report said.
Subscription VOD revenues in particular will grow 26% in 2014 to $5.1bn, accounting for 48% of total Ott video revenues. Ott refers to film and television content delivered over the internet, rather than via a cable or satellite company.
Revenues from retail (download-to-own) will grow 13% to $1.4bn (13% of total projected Ott revenue in 2014) while renting (streaming and temporary downloads) will grow 21% to $681m (6% of revenue).

New York, Dec. 1: A one-time mugger has apologised to his victim on Facebook, 35 years after the incident.
Michael Goodman said that he was a teenager when he mugged Claude Soffel in the late 1970s on the steps of the American Museum of Natural History to impress one of his friends, the New York Post reported.
Goodman, 53, accidently found Soffel, 52, on a random Facebook post about shuttered shop H and H Bagels.
Goodman, who is the son of famous astrologer Linda Goodman and Sam O. Goodman, wrote in the comments section that he has never forgotten the incident or Soffel's name, and wanted to say sorry for all the "crap" Soffel had to go through that day.
Responding to the Goodman's comments, Soffel said that.

PopWatchers, clear your calendars on Valentine's Day. Forget the romantic dinner, the slow jams, the ring-in-the-champange proposal. Stay home and watch TV. Specifically, Tyrannosaurus Sex, the Discovery Channel's "new special that investigates dinosaur reproduction" and uses "ground-breaking CGI bring new life to one of the last mysteries of these great beasts." Excuse me while I go boil my brain in holy water and try to hang on to the last pure memories of Jurassic Park. The press release for the show is a thing of both beauty and terror -- not unlike a dinosaur, really. "Tyrannosaurus Sex doesn’t just answer the questions,...
