Authorities are searching for a man who they say threw a homemade explosive into a crowded Cheesecake Factory in Pasadena, California, on Thursday night — a jarring incident and possible prank that did not result in injuries.
Shortly after 6 p.m., the man opened the restaurant’s front door and threw the device inside, where it landed under an empty table, police say. The suspect then fled as the device exploded.
No one was injured in the incident, but the scene quickly devolved.

If MTV Classic is anything like MTV, it'll be on the air for a month before people start complaining they don't play enough music. The "new" channel launched on August 1st, the 35th anniversary of MTV's debut, opening up the vaults to a pop-culture treasure trove that's been gathering dust for years. They should have done this years ago. MTV Classic wants to establish its music cred early on — they were wise to spend most of the first day playing classic Unplugged episodes, with Nirvana, Erykah Badu and R.E.M. The...

A section of a 1983 interview David Bowie gave to MTV in which he blasted the music channel for the lack of diversity among musicians played is quickly spreading across social media. Bowie, who died Sunday at the age of 69, did not mince words when he took MTV veejay Mark Goodman to task, saying he was "floored" by what he had seen, or rather not seen. On Monday, MTV shared the interview on Twitter. "There seem to be a lot of black artists making very good videos that I'm surprised are not being used on MTV," Bowie said in the interview.

MTV had a landmark year in 1983. The network broke into the mainstream following the airing of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" music video in heavy rotation, a decision that was forced upon the network by Walter Yetnikoff, the president of Jackson's record label. The network initially refused to air the video because it was made by a black artist. That criticism was not just from Jackson's label, however. Also in 1983, during an interview with Mark Goodman, David Bowie used his platform on MTV itself to criticize the network for its lack of videos by black artists. In the interview, Bowie points out, "There seem to be a lot of black artists making very good videos that I'm surprised aren't being used on MTV." Now we can forever remember 1983 as the year Bowie and Jackson made MTV get its act together.

In the early '80s, MTV hadn't begun airing black artists in regular video rotation. Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" and subsequent Thriller videos helped to change that, but in 1983 it was a pretty steady stream of Pat Benatar, Air Supply, Juice Newton, and the like. During an on-air interview with original VJ Mark Goodman, the legendary David Bowie -- who passed away at age 69 after a battle with cancer -- wondered aloud why the network's preferences were so blatantly white. "David Bowie: “Why are there practically no blacks on the network?” Mark Goodman: “We seem to be doing music that fits into what we want to play on MTV. The company is thinking in terms of narrowcasting.” David Bowie: “There seem to be a lot of black artists making very good videos that I’m surprised aren’t being used on MTV.” Mark Goodman: “We...

The Talk will have to prattle on without Sharon Osbourne, who has been granted permission to go on sabbatical from the CBS daytime show in order to spend more time with her rock star spouse, Ozzie.
“I’ve kept it no secret that I really miss my husband,” Osbourne told AOL TV. “He gets a break [from his tour] at the end of September” — when The Talk returns from summer vacay with fresh episodes — “and so I’ve asked [the show] for a little break so I can be with him.”

Video of the Year Week continues here in the MTV Newsroom. Yesterday we took a look at the latest entry into the Video of the Year portfolio, and today celebrates a clip that is not only for a great song but also has an MTV tie-in and is relevant to an anniversary today. Exactly one year ago, Lehman Brothers, one of the most massive financial services firms in the world, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which profoundly escalated the onset of the current recession and represented the largest bankruptcy in the country's history. The corporation's involvement in the investment of subprime mortgages lead to the loss of billions of dollars and the profound devaluation of the group's stock. It's a crisis that has yet to resolve itself and will probably be felt for years to come.

You need to see this. On Friday, July 27, 1984, MTV headed to Hollywood for the A-list red-carpet premiere and booze-fueled afterparty for Prince's seminal rock film "Purple Rain." Eddie Murphy showed up sporting a leopard-print blazer, a bare chest and a leather bandana tied around his neck. Pee-wee Herman drove up in a hot-rod-flamed clown car and busted into a nasally version of "When Doves Cry." And Prince himself — his "royal badness," as the VJ Mark Goodman declared — arrived in a purple stretch limo and, flanked by beefy bodyguards, sashayed down the carpet carrying a single rose.
