In the journey to reach professional success in Hollywood, people of color are often forced to conform to whiteness and navigate racial inequities created by white power structures. For Bipoc and Aapi TV writers, being “palatable” to white people and/or whiteness is required of them.
“I don’t think there are enough people of color making decisions,” “iCarly” and “Love, Victor” writer Nasser Samara said during TheWrap’s recent Writers Guild Association strike roundtable. “We’ve made it in our careers, but it comes with the acknowledgement that I had to be palatable to white people at some point to get this job, to get this opportunity to get ahead. We all had to pass the white bar.”

Unity has been a watchword throughout the WGA strike, as writers fight for increased wages in the face of shortened TV seasons, the curbing of mini-rooms they say have been abused by studios and protection against AI. But while Hollywood writers and other unions are aligned in the fight, writers of color stress that even if all of the Writers Guild’s demands are met, they’ll still be struggling for equitable opportunities, representation and upward mobility in the industry.
“I have to speak up, even when the strike is over,” said writer Joel Boyd (“History of Swear Words”) in a recent interview with TheWrap. Boyd, who identifies as Black, joined dozens of his fellow writers at the picket lines in front of Paramount’s studio and pointed out how the amount of racial diversity seen at picket lines is indicative of the lack of diversity in writer’s rooms today.

At this point, you could make a compelling film about all the aborted attempts to make a compelling film about Marvin Gaye.
In 2008, F. Gary Gray (Friday, Straight Outta Compton) signed on to helm a movie called Marvin. In subsequent years, Cameron Crowe, Jamie Foxx, Scott Rudin and, most recently, Dr. Dre all attached themselves to different projects about the late Motown icon, each of which failed to see the light of day.

You may not know much about the life of Marvin Gaye, but undoubtedly you're well versed in his hit song "Sexual Healing." Fittingly, Sexual Healing will be the name of the Marvin Gaye biopic penned by Lauren Goodman (A Last Goodbye) and helmed by Julien Temple (Earth Girls Are Easy). The would-be biopic has been bouncing around in development for a while, but seems to be gaining steam as casting news continues to emerge! Earlier this month, Law & Order star Jesse L. Martin stepped in to replace Lenny Kravitz in the lead role of Gaye. Now Deadline reports Martin's Law & Order co-star S. Epatha Merkerson has entered into talks to join the pic. The celebrated actress whose played Lt. Anita Van Buren for an incredible 19 years is up for the role of Gaye's mother, Alberta. Should she sign on, Merkerson would join a cast that also includes Brendan Gleeson, who'll...

"Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace 3D" hits theaters this weekend, and it brings up a lot of contradictory feelings in fans of George Lucas' legendary franchise. Most parents (and viewers in general) feel an overpowering allegiance to the original trilogy, but our kids, who have been exposed to the prequel trilogy and its animated "Clone Wars" spin-off, might actually prefer Episodes I-ii-iii. What is a self-respecting IV-v-vi-loyal parent to do? Moviefone has spoken to "Star Wars" fans to discuss what parents think about their kids' experience with the complete saga. A Balanced Approach "My husband is/was a Huge 'Star Wars' fan growing up, and our boys of course love it too. But, we made it a point to show them the originals first, and my oldest likes 'Return of the Jedi' best of all. Naturally, he's a big 'Clone Wars' lover (yes,...

He died yesterday, but… Today in history… April 2, 1939, Marvin Gaye was born.

The rundown… We know that F. Gary Gray has long been trying to get his Marvin Gaye project off the ground; and we also know that Jesse L Martin is attached to star as the soulful singer in a film directed by newcomer, Lauren Goodman; and director Cameron Crowe has been working on a Marvin Gaye project for almost 4 years, with most recent news stating that Terrence Howard was in talks to play the man (previously offered to Will Smith); and lastly, a 4th Marvin Gaye project is to be directed by Brit Julien Temple is, tentatively titled Midnight Love (named after the album Marvin Gaye...

I’ve been waiting for the announcement of a Sam Cooke biopic for years but I’m still estatic to hear that the next best thing could be on the cards with filmmaker Julien Temple set to document the life of soul legend Marvin Gaye. Temple has earnt critical respect in the past both in the film and music industry for his portrayals of iconic punk outfits The Clash and The Sex Pistols and has also directed feature films such as Bullet and Earth Girls Are Easy.
Screen Daily report that Temple is to tackle Sexual Healing (or Midnight Love – the site can’t seem to decide) but either way a title taken from Marvin Gaye’s final recording which the film is set to focus around. Emi hold the rights to Gaye’s music have given the greenlight for the $8 million budgeted project to go ahead and shooting is...

Musician biopics are starting to pop up everywhere in the past week; first Tupac Shakur, then Milli Vanilli and now Marvin Gaye. Screen Daily has reported that Julien Temple, the man behind music docs like The Filth and the Fury and The Future Is Unwritten, has taken directorial duties on this long-delayed project and will begin shooting on location in Ostend, Belgium later this year.
The project was originally supposed to begin filming in April 2008 with Jesse L. Martin as Gaye and James Gandolfini playing the record producer who helped the singer stage a later in life comeback, but that never happened [The Playlist].
Now it is in entirely new hands, with Banana Films (based in Belgium) taking over with a budget of 8 million dollars and more importantly with Emi agreeing to let them use Gaye’s music without charging them an arm and a leg. Gandolfini and Martin are also not...

. This news may disappoint several people including Cameron Crowe. A long awaited Marvin Gaye biopic starring "Law & Order" star Jesse L. Martin called, "Sexual Healing," was set to begin shooting in April of 2008. Focusing on the last years of the soul singer's life, "Sopranos" actor (and producer on that version of the project) James Gandolfini was set to play Belgian promoter Freddy Cousaert who helped Gaye back on his feet to record his comeback album, Midnight Love which spawned the monster hit, "Sexual Healing." Relatively untested director Lauren Goodman was set to direct, but April 2008 came…...

Of course, roughly 7 years later, father shot son twice, killing him instantly. It’s quite sad watching the below video, actually, observing the way they related to one another at the time, knowing what would later happen.
It also got me thinking about the small handful of Marvin Gaye films in some stage of development that we’ve mentioned previously on this blog.

James Gandolfini has come aboard to star in and produce Sexual Healing, a biopic about singer Marvin Gaye.
Jesse L. Martin already is set to play Gaye in the film, which will be directed by Lauren Goodman.
The film focuses on the last years of Gaye's life. Gandolfini will play Gaye's manager, Freddy Cousaert, the promoter who guided the singer through the recording of his biggest-selling album, Midnight Love. Goodman wrote the script loosely based on Steven Turner's book Trouble Man.
Gandolfini will produce via his Attaboy shingle with his partner Alexandra Ryan. Also producing are Ayo Davis, Efuru Flowers and Roger Haber.
Gary Hamilton's Arclight Films will executive produce and handle international sales for the $15 million production. Principal photography is scheduled to begin April 15 on locations in Massachusetts, Ostend, Belgium, and Los Angeles.
Victor Syrmis is executive producer with Hamilton.
Arclight Films is handling sales at Berlin's European Film Market next week.
Gandolfini, repped by Endeavor, won the SAG Award on Sunday night for outstanding performance by a male actor in a drama series for The Sopranos.

After years spent by various producers trying to get a Marvin Gaye biopic off the ground, a film about the legendary singer finally has been greenlighted. Jesse L. Martin is set to portray Gaye in Sexual Healing, an independent drama written and to be directed by Lauren Goodman. The movie chronicles the final years of Gaye, who, after years of battling drugs and having parted ways with Motown, exiled himself to Europe. There, he was rescued by promoter Freddy Cousaert, who helped Gaye record his biggest-selling album, Midnight Love, which produced Gaye's monster comeback hit, "Sexual Healing." Gaye's life was cut short the day before his 45th birthday in 1984, when his father killed him.
