“Oops.”
That’s how Gov. Rick Perry capped his 53 seconds of horror during last night’s Republican debate, when he couldn’t recall the third department of government that he intended to axe once he became president. It was painful to watch for supporters of the Texas governor, but also for anyone who’s ever blanked or fumbled for words in front of an audience. On the scale of 1 to 10 Stockdales, it was a solid 9.3.
What’s a Stockdale, you ask? Well, it’s a fictional unit of measurement that rates the campaign-killing effects of a politician’s televised blunder.

With Gabrielle Giffords still recovering from being shot and not ready for a tough campaign, the party is scrambling to find a strong contender to battle the Gop's Jeff Flake-and fast. David A. Graham examines the field.
Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was long seen as a savior for the Arizona Democratic Party. Democrats haven't had a senator from the state since 1995. Giffords, however, was the total package: charismatic, energetic, a moderate in a purple state, and a great fundraiser to boot. Sen. Jon Kyl's seat was up in 2012, and she was seen as a candidate who could defeat him. If Kyl retired, all the better: She might even be a shoo-in.

The Republican governor's startling vetoes of "birther" and gun bills backed by the Tea Party have not upset her conservative base, and Democrats say it's all part of a plan to appease extremist voters. Terry Greene Sterling reports.
A year ago, incumbent Republican Gov. Jan Brewer was trailing her Democratic rival Terry Goddard in the Arizona gubernatorial race. Then Brewer signed Sb 1070, the state's notorious immigration law, and further pandered to her Republican Tea Party base by touting her proud membership in the NRA, labeling unauthorized migrants drug mules, and scaring the daylights out of Arizonans with false tales of "beheadings" in the desert. Despite an agonizingly embarrassing senior moment in televised pre-election debates, Brewer rode a wave of conservative sentiment into the governor's office, and achieved iconic status among her supporters.

My family and I vacationed in Arizona a few years back. We had a great time hanging around a beautiful resort in Scottsdale, hiking in some gorgeous mountains, attending a Phoenix Suns game, and even dining at my own spiritual home, Alice Cooperstown. For the time being, however, we have absolutely no plans to go back to Arizona. Now after seeing some of Governor Jan Brewer's mind-blowing meltdown performance during her debate with Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard, I'm now frankly a little frightened for the good people of Arizona -- and yes, there are lots of them there too. Here's a playlist for a woman who lost her head, and a state that seems bent on doing the same. "The Immigrant Song" - Led Zeppelin "Arizona" - Mark Lindsay "Fences" - Phoenix "Elected" - Alice Cooper "Borderline" - Madonna "Tongue-Tied" - Aqualung "I Pity The Poor Immigrant"...

I guess cojones can only get you so far. Last night, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer stumbled through her first gubernatorial debate with current Arizona Attorney Gen. Terry Goddard. Stumbled is putting mildly. Ben Smith described it as being like "an anxiety dream" and Seth Meyers noted "Other than every single part of it, Jan Brewer's opening statement last night was pretty good."...
