While she was understandably launched into stardom by her most recent lead performance in Fallout, Prime Video’s new TV show wasn’t Ella Purnell’s first rodeo — far from that. The Lucy MacLean star has had several prominent roles over the past few years which you might have missed, including a lead performance in one of the biggest sci-fi franchises ever. No, not that one.
Ella Purnell Killed It in Star Trek: Prodigy
Star Wars’ biggest competitor, Star Trek has always had a large and devoted fan base that, while not getting as much content as their Sw counterparts, tend to get it better. Star Trek: Prodigy, Paramount Plus’ reasonably fresh animated TV show, featured Ella Purnell as Gwyndala aka Gwyn, one of the series’ lead characters.
Despite it being a voice acting gig by Purnell, Gwyn shares the actress’ facial features, so you’ll definitely recognize her on the screen.

In the "Star Trek: Prodigy" episode "Mindwalk", the crew of the U.S.S. Protostar has learned that their ship is infected with an insidious computer virus planted by the evil Diviner (John Noble). It seems that the virus can be spread through mere communications channels, meaning Dal (Brett Gray), Gwyn (Ella Purnell), and the rest of the Protostar teens can't explain who they are to the grumpy Admiral Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) pursuing them in a massive vessel called the U.S.S. Dauntless. If the virus infects a ship, its systems will be rewired to automatically attack other Federation vessels. The Diviner aims to destroy the Federation before a cataclysmic future event occurs; the Diviner, naturally, is a time traveler.
With the Dauntless on their tail, Dal realizes that he can communicate with Janeway. Dal, it seems, has some mild and latent telepathic abilities, and reaches out to communicate directly to Janeway's brain.

The world of Dark Souls is chock-full of mysteries, like the actual circumstances behind the demise of Yoel of Londor. But few have intrigued players more than the one surrounding the firstborn child of Gwyn, Lord of Sunlight.
This ostracized heir has become a popular haunt for fan theories, with speculations running rampant ever since the release of the first game. We delve into two of the likeliest candidates and find out which is most probably Gwyn’s actual firstborn.
Solaire From Dark Souls 1 Was The Leading Candidate

Initially, many believed that Solaire of Astora, the cheerful Undead warrior from the first Dark Souls game, was the firstborn of Gwyn. His unwavering devotion to the sun, his bizarre dialogue surrounding it, and possession of the Sunlight Straight Sword and Shield all hinted at a potential connection to Gwyn’s fallen heir.

The evolution of games made by FromSoftware over the years has got the fans thinking about how there might be a connection between all of them. One of the most popular speculations is how the Dark Souls series is a prequel to the events of the Elden Ring.
However, a detailed post made by this user on Reddit challenges everything we know about Dark Souls being a prequel to FromSoftware’s latest release. The post goes over facts that have been overlooked for a long time and links the two franchises in a way no one has seen before.

Soul of Cinder, the major antagonist and final boss of 2016’s Dark Souls 3, is certainly one of the most memorable bosses in the Dark Souls franchise. For many years there have been theories regarding the true identity of this boss. Many claim that Soul of Cinder is just a different form of Gwyn, the final boss of Dark Souls. This theory is quite popular as Gwyn has linked the First Flame and often exhibits abilities that are similar to Gwyn.

However, Soul of Cinder is not just Gwyn, and actually the amalgamation of all the Lords of Cinder that have pledged to defend the First Flame by linking it. Throughout the final battle, players may feel like they’re fighting Gwyn but it is confirmed that Soul of Cinder is the fusion of all the Lords of Cinder.

FromSoftware has become a leader in the gaming industry when it comes to dark fantasy titles. These games are renowned for being difficult which gives the players an exciting gameplay experience. However. games like Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring are fan favorites for another reason. These games have a unique twist in their storyline and unforgettable characters.

The Dark Souls franchise, created by none other than FromSoftware, is a staple in the gaming community. Known for giving the player a great sense of achievement, these games are tough and contain some of the toughest bosses the history of video games has ever seen.
Gwyndolin is one such enemy that the player faces in both the first and third installments of the series. He is the last-born child of Gwyn, the lord of sunlight, and protects the honorary tomb of his father in the first game. Lastly, he meets his end in the final game of the franchise, however, some fans have theorized how he might still be alive.

Within Dark Souls‘ desolate world of Lordran, remnants of Lord Gwyn’s once-glorious kingdom lie in ruin. Among these relics stand the imposing figures of Gwyn’s knights. The silver-clad guardians of Anor Londo and the battle-scarred Black Knights encountered throughout Lordran present an interesting dichotomy.
While both don Gwyn’s coat of arms, a closer examination reveals a significant dissimilarity in their prowess. A new fan theory says that the Black Knights represent Gwyn’s elite, forever altered by a pivotal event, while the silver knights represent a less-skilled, more ceremonial force.
The Black Knights May Have Had A Greater Purpose
The Black Knights could have been Gwyn’s enforcers in Dark Souls. Image credit: FromSoftware
Dark Souls‘ lore establishes a clear connection between the Black and silver knights. The Black Knight Greatsword description explicitly identifies them as demon hunters, their once-silver armor forever scorched by the fires of the Chaos.

As much as the main games of the series manage to keep the players intrigued, the DLCs and expansions are equally exciting. They offer a great amount of challenge and difficulty in terms of the levels that one has to cross in order to complete them.

Elden Ring’s character roster has no shortage of people with very complex personalities. Gods almost destroying the world in grief. Demigods who separate their soul from their flesh to be free of duties they do not wish to take. But one character is such that players never get to meet and will probably never be seen alive. It is none other than Godwyn the Golden.
He can be credited as being the one character who brought about the shattering of the Elden Ring. But he did so by dying; someone killed him, and in grief over his death, his mother, Queen Marika, shattered the Elden Ring. Now, some very interesting fan theories suggest that he might have participated in his own death and much more.
Would Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree prove these mind-blowing theories about Godwyn?

On June 23, 2023, Paramount announced that it was going to remove several shows from its streaming service Paramount+ and cancel its animated Nickelodeon series "Star Trek: Prodigy" after the conclusion of its second season, due out in 2024. This announcement incurred the ire of Trekkies everywhere, as "Prodigy" would be left wholly unavailable to anyone who hadn't purchased a Blu-ray or DVD of the series. For a few days after the announcement, hard copies of "Star Trek: Prodigy" were in short supply, as panicked media collectors wanted to get their hands on a "Star Trek" show before it was seemingly erased from history completely.
A recent press release, however, has revealed a reprieve. Netflix has announced that it will be handling the presentation of "Star Trek: Prodigy" going forward.

Season one of Star Trek: Prodigy beams onto Netflix later this year, with the completed sophomore season coming in 2024.

If there’s one thing Star Trek fans understand, it’s that cancelation doesn’t mean the end. The original series famously got one more season after fans flooded the NBC offices to protest the cancelation after season two. That same fan support brought Trek back two more times, first as The Animated Series and then as The Motion Picture.

Well, Paramount+ went there.
The streaming service on Friday canceled a wave of original series, and there are some shockers.
Before we dig into the cancellations, the canceled shows will be removed from its platform as the company takes a content write-down.
The news isn't too surprising. HBO Max opened the floodgates for the likes of Showtime and Starz to pull shows off the air and their platforms.
In fact, some shows didn't even see the light of day. It's a precedent that is a stark reminder of how media companies are set up nowadays.
We'll begin with Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, which launched earlier this year.
Despite a strong critical response, the series will not be returning.
"Before rock 'n' roll ruled, before the T-Birds were the coolest in the school, four fed-up outcasts dare to have fun on their own terms, sparking a moral panic that will change Rydell High forever,...

There was so much to love about T.K. (Ronen Rubinstein) and Carlos’ (Rafael Silva) wedding in the 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 4 finale, but we didn’t quite see everything that was filmed. And now, TV Insider can exclusively reveal a deleted scene that didn’t make the cut from before the ceremony. “You look perfect for a perfect day,” Owen (Rob Lowe) tells his son. “Almost perfect,” T.K. corrects him. “I think even the grave couldn’t keep your mother away,” Owen notes, which is true, since we did see Gwyn (Lisa Edelstein) at one point. Meanwhile, Carlos checks with his mom Andrea (Roxana Brusso) that he’s doing the right thing, after his father’s murder. “The day you asked your father to be your best man, he was the happiest I’ve ever seen him, so yes, you’re damn right we’re doing the right thing,...

It will take the entire hiatus to recover from the emotional rollercoaster that was this supersized finale.
There was so much bittersweetness to 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 4 Episode 17 and 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 4 Episode 18 as we hit impossible highs, experienced devastating lows, celebrated and mourned, and loved and lost.
At the center of it was Tarlos' highly-anticipated wedding that's been seasons in the making.
But first, we have to pour some tequila out for Gabriel Reyes. The speculation and fan theories were correct, and we did lose the Reyes patriarch by the close of the first hour.
He's been this influential, wonderfully complex, rich character, and his loss will be felt from now on. To say I'm angry about it doesn't do it justice. The series relies too heavily on shocking deaths to move the narrative forward.

Warning: This post will contain minor spoilers for the first season of "Star Trek: Prodigy."
The Diviner in "Star Trek: Prodigy" functions as the series' central villain. Played by John Noble (of "Fringe" fame) the Diviner is an alien who owns a mine somewhere deep in the galaxy. He has enslaved hundreds of teenagers and is forcing them to dig through the planet in search of ... something. The Diviner is, in fact, looking for a missing Starfleet vessel called the U.S.S. Protostar, an experimental ship that can travel faster than any starship to date. When a group of escaped teens find the Protostar first and abscond with it, the Diviner takes off in pursuit.
The Diviner's wicked scheme will eventually be revealed. He has traveled back in time to find a Federation starship and equip it with a secret computer virus that will automatically cause all Starfleet vessels to attack one another.

If you've been feeling bereft of interplanetary adventure and a little lost without access to a teleporter and universal translator, you're not alone.
Star Trek: Prodigy wrapped its first season on December 29 with Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 Episode 20, and after traveling the galaxy with the intrepid crew of the USS Protostar for 14 months, its absence is palpable.
Happily, TV Fanatic had the opportunity to talk with creators Dan and Kevin Hageman and discuss those incredible final few episodes of the season and everything the future holds for Dal, Gwyn, Rok, Zero, Pog, Murf, and Vice Admiral Janeway.
Meeting over Zoom, the Hagemans are enthusiastic about being able to talk about everything, including the finale.
First, though, we ask about Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 Episode 18, "Mindwalk," wherein Dal (Brett Gray) and Vice Admiral Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) swap bodies.

Star Trek has endured since 1966 largely in part to the creators refusing to speak down to their audiences. Whereas “The Cage”, the first pilot shot in 1964, was deemed “too cerebral” by NBC execs, the show that made it on air rarely stopped being thought-provoking. When the three season mission ended, its next iteration was on Saturday morning television, where, once again, the writers and production team refused to dumb things down.

Full disclosure: I did not want to write this review. Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 Episode 20 marks the end of an inaugural season that has spanned over fourteen months and putting this review out meant accepting that finality.
Of course, Season 2 is already in the works, so intellectually, I know it isn't an end, but knowing you'll see good friends again doesn't make goodbyes any easier.
The team behind this ambitious, beautiful, and wholly remarkable series has done a fantastic thing by reimagining Star Trek in a completely new way while holding true to all of Trek's core messages of inclusion, communication, and growth.
And while the season closes out with the Protostar crew achieving their goals of saving the Federation and joining Starfleet, it's a victory that came at the cost of Hologram Janeway, their first guide and mentor in life outside of Tars Lamora.

If there was ever a question of whether the Protostar crew would be able to circumvent the weapon planted by the Vau N'Akat, Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 Episode 19 settles it with breathtakingly tragic effect.
Arriving at the heart of Federation space to be greeted by a massive assembly of Starfleet vessels, the penultimate episode of the season sees all efforts to prevent the living construct from fulfilling its mandate foiled at every turn.
And even when Gwyn's impassioned plea for assistance from the Federation's allies is answered, the very protocols designed to ensure Starfleet's survival appear to guarantee its destruction.
Every battle has at least two sides. What's horrifically brilliant about this scenario is that the Vau N'Akat's vengeance is poetically realized by turning the Federation's systems on itself, using Starfleet's tech to destroy Starfleet lives.
It's an incredibly sophisticated level of conflict architecture. We have the Vau N'Akat...

It's pretty genius what they've done on Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 Episode 18 in providing a way for the Protostar to convey information to the Dauntless without using traditional modes of communication.
(Mind you, the contrarian in me wonders if they couldn't have scrawled out a message on the windows (ports?) of the Protostar to arrange a face-to-face rendezvous on some neutral planet or starport.)
But a body/brain swap works, too—sort of.
The most impressive element in this adventure is how Brett Gray and Kate Mulgrew effectively convey the characters' consciousness exchange through their vocal intonations and cadence.
Not only are Dal and Vice Admiral Janeway on opposite ends of the Starfleet experience spectrum, but Gray and Mulgrew are similarly diverse in their backgrounds as voice actors.
With her expansive list of voice acting roles, one would expect Mulgrew to slip into the discombobulated Dal voice with finesse. However,...

With the finesse of Moriarty and the riveting action of a Dixon Hill novel, Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 Episode 17 sucks us into a labyrinthine mystery adventure with a sinister motive.
In keeping with the backstories revealed on Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 Episode 16, the personal holodeck programs provide further insight into each of the crew members' desires and motivations.
And while the villain behind the trap is pretty obvious in hindsight, it's hard to watch Hologram Janeway realize her subverted programming has betrayed them all.
While Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 Episode 12 aboard the Borg cube was purported to be the "haunted house" narrative, I found the hijacked holodeck here more sinister.
There were many dangers with the dormant Borg cube, but there was a clear mission to be accomplished. On the holodeck, the entire point was to obscure the purpose of their being there.

I'll be honest. I love anthologies. I love exposition. So by any measure, Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 Episode 16 is a sheer delight for me, and I'll also admit that's a weird thing to say about a collection of woe-filled tales of child slavery, kidnapping, and vengeance-fueled tragedy.
However, thanks to the genius in the planning and pacing of the season, we're able to see the backstories of Rok-Tahk, Zero, and Jankom Pog as traumatic events that led to their happier, healthier place aboard the Protostar.
And while life isn't perfect for our intrepid kid crew, the injustices they have survived are easier to process, knowing they eventually find a family with each other.
The same cannot be said for Asencia, now known to be The Vindicator, and The Diviner.
While it's exciting to know for certain where (and when) Chakotay is and how The Protostar became weaponized to destroy the Federation,...

A dinner party devolves into a bloodbath in this stylish, slow-burn Welsh language horror from debut director Lee Haven Jones. Fair warning: The Feast is not the kind of movie about a feast that will make you hungry afterwards. Indeed, eating beforehand might not be a good idea either.
Set in the present day, the film centres on a wealthy family preparing for a dinner party at their stylish, ultra-modern home in the Welsh countryside. As the film begins, mother Glenda (Nia Roberts) is relaxing in her purpose-built meditation chamber, her corrupt politician husband Gwyn (Julian Lewis Jones) is out trying to shoot rabbits, while her sons Guto (Steffan Cennydd) and Gweirydd (Siôn Alun Davies) are getting high and obsessively training for a triathalon,...

Frying pan, meet fire. Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 Episode 14 takes everything our Protostar crew sees as safe and comforting and blows it out the airlock.
In addition, while wandering the Mos Eisley spaceport of the Delphic Expanse, Denaxi Depot, they manage to pick up Trek's own Han Solo, Thadiun Okona, the rapscallion captain making his second animated return after appearing on Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2 Episode 5.
And did we mention Murf? He may be bipedal now, but as long as his butt continues firing torpedoes, he'll always be our Mellanoid slime baby.
The highlight, by any measure, is the Dauntless chasing down the Protostar at slipstream warp, dwarfing the tiny craft in both size and the determination of its commander.
The real me is hunting us with a quantum slipstream Dauntless-class starship? Good luck with that.

The most fascinating thing about Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 Episode 13 is that the main plot has no villain or adversary.
Sure, we've had the Murder Planet, and as recently as the season premiere, Barniss Frex was no bad guy, even if he did abandon the Protostar crew to the self-destructing station.
But this encounter with the Enderprizians is a wholly benign adventure, with The Gallows serving as more of a mystery than an antagonist.
The canonical reference that comes to mind first when the Enderprizian culture is seen clearly is Star Trek: The Original Series Season 2 Episode 25, "The Omega Glory," wherein Kirk and his away team discover another Starfleet captain, Ron Tracey, has broken the Prime Directive and shared Federation technology with a pre-warp species to aid their war against their enemies.
Captain Tracey justifies his actions by claiming the Omegans possess a serum of longevity extracted from the planet,...

Introducing a new generation of viewers to Star Trek 'verse means framing situations for learning without the safety (or tedium) of lecture-heavy exposition.
Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 Episode 12 is a master class of how showing is greater than telling.
Also, how in some cases, doing is better than listening. Of course, listening has less chance of assimilation. Just saying.
In the decades since the Borg made their debut on Star Trek: The Next Generation, it's incredible that I've never considered the Borg Collective as a metaphor for popular/powerful cliques at the school level. It took positioning them in reference to a group of kids for me to see it.
Against the backdrop of adults, the Borg hive mind looks more like a contrast of ideologies and culture.
When Zero plugs into the collective consciousness, it instantly invokes the brainwashing, fear-feeding, need-to-belong mob mentality of every adolescent "in-crowd."
Zero still...

"Star Trek: Prodigy" returns to complete its first season on October 27, 2022, and the teenage crew of the U.S.S. Protostar has already been through a lot. After having escaped the evil Diviner (John Noble) and freed hundreds of teen slaves, the main characters have all donned Starfleet uniforms and have set about their mission to return to Federation space. They have learned, however, that the Protostar has been armed with a weapon that would wipe out the Federation if returned, forcing them to enact a few benevolent Starfleet-like missions while also avoiding Starfleet pursuers. They receive the bulk of their guidance from a hologram of Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), who has become an empathetic mentor/parent for them. In a twist, their primary pursuer is the real-life Vice Admiral Janeway (also Mulgrew), who would rather see them apprehended.
"Prodigy" bears a lot of resemblances to the 1995 series "Star Trek: Voyager.

One can be forgiven for wondering if Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 Episode 11 would be able to bring the series back at the same level of excellence it established with its inaugural ten episodes.
After all, it's been nearly a full year (to the day!) that Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 first premiered and almost nine months since the midseason finale, Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 Episode 10.
Well, that was needless anxiety, wasn't it?
We hit the ground (water?) running as the Protostar crew continue the Star Trek tradition of saving whales (or at least whale-like creatures).
That's not the only action we catch up with quickly.
Gwyn's memory loss after seeing a reflection of Zero's true form continues to trouble her and Zero. Zero because they feel guilty to have harmed a friend. Gwyn because... well, she lost a chunk of memory that includes her last encounter with her father. That would mess with anyone's calm.

The second half of "Star Trek: Prodigy" season 1 will begin airing on Paramount+ on October 27, and the series has already taken several dramatic turns. The show's central ship, the U.S.S. Protostar, will soon make contact with actual Federation officers for the very first time. This follows a period wherein nothing had been known as to the show's location within the "Star Trek" cartography, or even its time frame. In the return episode, "Asylum," Dal (Brett Gray), Gwyn (Ella Purnell), the holographic Capt. Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), and the rest of the Protostar crew will board a Federation communications relay manned by a single lonely officer. Meanwhile, the real-life Vice Admiral Janeway (also Mulgrew) will take command of an impressive new ship, the U.S.S. Dauntless, and discover the presumed-defeated Diviner (John Noble), Gwyn's father and the Palpatine-like villain of the series.

It's hard to believe, but Star Trek: Prodigy premiered almost exactly a year ago. A co-production between Nickelodeon and Paramount+, its mission targetted a demographic Star Trek had never made a play for before -- elementary to middle-school-aged kids.
Despite that aim, Prodigy proved in its inaugural ten episodes that its narrative and adventure held appeal for adult fans of Star Trek and quality animation.
In anticipation of the second half of Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 dropping on Thursday, October 23, TV Fanatic joined several other press outlets to speak with Brett Gray and Ella Purnell, the voice actors who bring to life Dal R'El and Gwyndala, respectively.
Purnell was asked first about the emotional and psychological changes Gwyn has undergone. Does she get a heads-up, and how does she prepare?

"Star Trek: Prodigy," released under the Nickelodeon umbrella, is about a group of teenage aliens who live very, very far away from the auspices of recognizable Trek iconography. They have never heard of Starfleet or the Federation. But when fleeing a cruel slave master, the teens happen upon an abandoned Starfleet vessel called the U.S.S. Protostar. Thanks to the help of an emergency instructional hologram made to look like Captain Janeway (played by Kate Mulgrew), the teenagers form their own rudimentary crew and slowly begin absorbing Trek's utopian philosophies.

Cannibalism, torture, gory sex and meaty subtexts are all on the menu at a dinner party held by an arrogant local MP
Set and shot in Wales, with dialogue in Welsh (apart from a few loan words from English and the occasional Anglo-Saxon cuss), this is a striking, reasonably original wodge of folk horror. It also represents an auspicious first feature for director Lee Haven Jones (he’s shot a few Doctor Who episodes and the like), working from a script by writer-producer Roger Williams. Said screenplay adroitly incorporates meaty subtexts about class and generational tension, the evils of contemporary land management, and sexual abuse, while still ensuring there’s plenty of screen time devoted to cannibalism, torture and very gory forms of sex.
The feast of the title is a dinner party that arrogant local MP Gwyn (Julian Lewis Jones) and his preening, social-climbing wife Glenda (Nia Roberts) are...

In writer-director Andrew Semens’s brilliantly twisty, disquieting psychological thriller, Resurrection, his first film since making his feature-length debut a decade ago, the central character, Margaret (an eerily transcendent Rebecca Hall) delivers a stunning, seven-minute monologue to an increasingly incredulous, increasingly discomfited younger colleague, Gwyn (Angela Wong Carbone). Shot in a bravura uninterrupted take by Semens and cinematographer Wyatt Garfield, the monologue relies on Hall’s utterly mesmerizing performance as the unraveling Margaret. It’s nothing less than a master-class in performance and engagement, drawing in viewers in not through visual effects, elaborate camera moves, or rapid-fire editing, but through Hall’s anguished delivery of Semens’s twisty, unnerving dialogue. That monologue lays out a key, life-changing moment in Margaret’s personal history,...

Stars: Rebecca Hall, Tim Roth, Grace Kaufman, Michael Esper, Angela Wong Carbone | Written and Directed by Andrew Semans
Rebecca Hall follows her terrific turn in The Night House with yet another stunning horror performance in Resurrection, a twisted psychological thriller from writer-director Andrew Semans. By turns chilling and disturbing, it’s a gripping study of trauma and madness.
Hall plays Margaret, a successful businesswoman in upstate New York, whose teenage daughter Abbie (Grace Kaufman) is on the verge of leaving for college. Margaret’s life is rigidly controlled and ordered, until she spots David (Tim Roth) at a conference and has a panic attack that sends her spiralling into terror. Soon, Margaret begins seeing David everywhere, triggering memories of their horrific past together. But is David’s current threat all in her head, or is something much darker going on?
It’s a crying shame that the Academy tends to...
