The original Predator inspired more American Film Market-screened knockoffs than just about any other movie, and the word on the street here at the sales event is that the upcoming Robert Rodriguez production Predators will also jumpstart a whole new stream of human-vs.-aliens movies. And those who gotten a look at the Predators screenplay have been raving.
These sources tell Fango that this sequel ignores Predator 2 as well as both Alien Vs. Predator movies, and is a direct sequel to the Arnold Schwarzenegger-starrer. The script, by Michael Finch, Alex Litvak and Rodriguez, not only takes place on Earth, but its human characters also travel to the Predators’ planet to hunt the extraterrestrials. Although it's still several months away, Monsterpalooza 2010 is already shaping up to be one of the must-hit events of the next year. Robert De Niro’s Mohawk in “Taxi Driver,” Linda Blair’s satanic transformation in “The Exorcist,” Marlon Brando’s jowls in “The Godfather” and F. Murray Abraham’s deterioration in “Amadeus” all have one artistic hand in common, that of the makeup effects master Dick Smith. Smith’s creation of new makeup techniques throughout his career not only transformed the art of motion picture makeup, but inspired a new generation of makeup and visual effects artists who have embraced him as a true visionary and mentor. Smith’s work on the “Old Salieri” makeup for “Amadeus” (1984) earned him an Oscar and he received an additional nomination for his makeup work on “Dad” (1989). Program Change (as of May 18, 2009) The event is no longer free: It's $5 for the general public and $3 for academy members and students with a valid ID. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is hosting .A Special Tribute to Dick Smith. this summer, with Rick Bakeras master of ceremonies. The event will be held June 17, 2009, in the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Los Angeles. Members of Local 706, the West Coast union members, are invited, and the public is welcome to attend.The tribute will feature guests who have worked with, or been influenced by Smith, including director Guillermo Del Toro, actor Hal Holbrook and make-up artists Richard Taylor, Greg Cannom, Kazuhiro Tsuji, Kevin Haney, Andrew Clement, Mike Elizalde, Tom Woodruff, Alec Gillis, Shane Mahan, John Rosengrant, Lindsay McGowan and Alan Scott.
