Hulu’s “We Were the Lucky Ones” is primed for a big night at this year’s Emmys. Adapted from the Georgia Hunter‘s 2017 book of the same name, the limited series follows the Kurcs, a Polish Jewish family who were split apart during World War II: some members go into hiding and others are forced into concentration camps. The series, brutal and dark, follows the family’s attempts to reunite after the war ends. It’s a tough watch but a vital one and the series, created by Erica Lipez, is intelligent in its portrayal of such hard subject matter, as noted by critics.
Aramide Tinubu (Variety) stated: “Devastating, and profoundly moving, ‘We Were the Lucky Ones’ illustrates the scope of World War II, the inhumanity of others and the anguish of disconnection and loss.”
Matthew Gilbert (Boston Globe) observed: “Yes, the miniseries is challenging, and steeped in heartbreak,...

Peacock’s new limited series “Apples Never Fall” is cut from the same cloth as “Big Little Lies,” with both shows adapted from the novels of Australian author Liane Moriarty.
“Apples Never Fall” follows a family, led by four adult children, trying to piece together the mysterious disappearance of their mother Joy (Oscar-nominee Annette Bening). Bening is reliably excellent in this limited series, as is “Jurassic Park” star Sam Neil, who plays her on-screen husband. And Jake Lacy and Allison Brie shine as two of the four adult kids. All four performances have been praised by critics and its these turns that could lead the Emmy charge for the series.
Brian Lowry (CNN) stated: “As for the old expression ‘How do you like them apples?,’ in this case, happily, the answer is quite a lot.”
Matthew Gilbert (Boston Globe) opined: “If the ending to the mystery is predictable, the getting...

The food is a major plot point in the second season of Hulu’s acclaimed bawdy historical comedy “The Great,” starring Elle Fanning as Catherine and Nicholas Hoult as Peter. Vegetarians may have little appetite for the spreads served in the comedy that run the gourmet scale from a whole pig to a puny rat. During a recent Variety zoom on the series, host Jazz Tangcay admitted “it’s impossible to watch the season without feeling hungry.” “Wow, my favorite subject,” exclaimed Fanning, adding that series creator, show runner and executive producer Tony McNamara is the biggest foodie ever.
“I think everyone on the panel would know it’s my favorite thing-food,” said McNamara, who co-wrote the Oscar-winning 2018 “The Favourite.” Such a favorite thing that when he’s not working, McNamara’s thinking about food and where to go to eat. “Usually everyone on the show is hired and one...

With “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” ineligible and “Fleabag” done, Amazon Prime is looking to keep its foot in the door for comedy television honors from the Golden Globes, SAG Awards and the Critics’ Choice TV Awards. One of the more promising opportunities for Amazon this cycle is its futuristic afterlife comedy “Upload.”
Created by Emmy winner Greg Daniels, the show takes place in the not-too-distant future and centers on Nathan Brown (Robbie Amell). Nathan is a computer programmer who is seriously injured in a car accident. Told that he is likely to die from his injuries, he chooses to have himself “uploaded” into a digital afterlife where he can still interact with the world of the living. While there, he begins developing a close relationship with his living handler, Nora (Andy Allo), but also has to deal with his very controlling living girlfriend, Ingrid (Allegra Edwards).

Netflix’s controversial new black comedy “Insatiable” received ample criticism for its trailer alone, which spurred accusations of fat-shaming. But with all the episodes now available on the streaming service, critics are saying the actual show is “much worse.”
“Insatiable” stars Disney Channel alumna Debby Ryan as a high schooler who is ridiculed for her weight until an accident requires her jaw to be wired shut, causing her to lose several pounds. Social media users skewered the trailer, which shows the newly thin Ryan strutting through the halls, plotting her former bullies’ demises as her classmates look on in newfound lust and wonder.
The body-centric plot sparked outrage from many, resulting in a petition to cancel the show with more than 200,000 signatures. Ryan and the show’s creators responded to the backlash by asking skeptics to hold their opinions until after they’d seen the series. Well, “Insatiable” has officially...

The first episode of “Patrick Melrose” was a tour de force for Benedict Cumberbatch, but the second episode belonged to Hugo Weaving. Titled “Never Mind,” the episode is sure to be Weaving’s Emmy submission for academy judging if he is nominated for Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actor. David Melrose, father to Cumberbatch’s Patrick, is a scenery-chewing role for the accomplished actor, who has never been nominated for an Emmy or Oscar in three decades on screen, including such iconic roles as Agent Smith in “The Matrix,” V in “V for Vendetta” and Elrond in both “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit.” Weaving has however reached national-treasure status in his homeland, winning four Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards this decade.

Henry Winkler has lost all five of his Emmy bids to date but that losing streak could finally be over as he’s earning rave reviews for his scene-stealing role on the new comedy “Barry.” Bill Hader plays Barry Berkman, an ex-marine turned hitman who, desperate for a break following his most recent job, is sent off to Los Angeles. There he unexpectedly finds comfort and acceptance among the local theatre community. He takes an acting class taught by Gene Cousineau (Winkler), who initially thinks Barry is a dreadful actor but is later won over by his all-too-convincing declaration that he is a killer.
As Maureen Ryan of Variety observed, “Winkler, among others, is good at peeling back the pompous and self-absorbed layers of his character to find the truthful artist inside — and, whatever his flaws, he gets Barry and others to do the same.” Also singing the actor’s...
