Rob Lieber, the writer of the latest Karate Kid movie that is currently in production, has signed with UTA for representation in all areas.
The writer was previously at Verve. That agency, however, underwent an internal battle amongst partners that went public, leading to the ouster of one of the founding partners. Several literary clients were caught in the brouhaha’s wake, with UTA picking several of them up in the last month or so. The agency previously signed comics author and screenwriter Brian K. Vaughan and Masters of the Air co-creator Jon Orloff.
Lieber made a name for himself in the studio family space, with producer credits in Sony’s hit live-action/CG hybrid Peter Rabbit as well as Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween, both released in 2018, and Disney’s Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, which starred Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner.

Warner Bros continues its quest to bring high-profile filmmakers firmly into the fold with Jon M Chu solidifying his commitment to the studio.
Warner Bros must be on the mother of all charm offensives at the moment. Just a couple of weeks ago we heard that the studio had managed to sign none other than Tom Cruise up to a development deal at the studio, an announcement that drew in lots of eyeballs and heralded Warner’s intentions to once again become the destination for major filmmakers.
Ever since Christopher Nolan publicly rebuked the studio and dissolved his long-running partnership with it, Warner Bros has struggled (and perhaps still is struggling) with its reputation. However, the Cruise deal was a splashy statement of intent (even if it isn’t a first-look deal) and there’s also talk of Ryan Coogler taking his highly-coveted vampire project there. Though the end of the year is mainly the mainstay of serious and somber award-seeking films, there’s almost always room for family-friendly flicks. After all, there has to be a break from all the hectic holiday preparations, and what better way to relax than getting off your feet in one of those swell reclining plush multiplex chairs? So, the “mouse house” will arrive shortly with a slick fantasy fable, but how about their “major ‘toon rival”? Well, the fine folks at Dreamworks are completing a trilogy begun seven years ago when they put a new spin on a beloved baby boomer toy. Much of that spin involves music, as the lil’ critters interpreted classic (and some brand new) pop tunes. This makes their third outing feel a bit foreshadowed as those Trolls Band Together.
This new outing begins with a flashback to the final performance of the huge Troll boy band BroZone.

On Nov. 17, 2000, Universal released the Jim Carrey-starring live-action adaptation of the Dr. Seuss classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas in theaters, where it would go on to gross $345 million globally. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:
While doing a big-screen live action remake of a beloved animated TV chestnut can no doubt be a daunting task, Ron Howard will never have to worry about his take on Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas being mistaken for anything resembling an instant holiday classic.
It’s not so much that the reported $120 million-plus production goes wrong somewhere along the way, but rather, it never goes right. The tone, which seemingly changes by the minute, is off from the start and leaves an utterly charmless trail of half-baked ideas and misguided attempts at subversive edginess in its wake.

“Coyote vs. Acme,” a live-action movie that stars John Cena, Will Forte and Lana Condor, has been shelved by Warner Bros. a year after it was completed.
This follows Warner Bros. similarly shelving nearly completed features “Batgirl” and “Scoob’s Haunted Holiday.”
“With the re-launch of Warner Bros. Pictures Animation in June, the studio has shifted its global strategy to focus on theatrical releases. With this new direction, we have made the difficult decision not to move forward with ‘Coyote vs Acme.’ We have tremendous respect for the filmmakers, casts, and crew, and are grateful for their contributions to the film,” a Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group spokesperson said.
The movie was an adaptation of a 1990 short story by Ian Frazier that first appeared in the New Yorker. Development on the project began back in 2018, with Chris McKay attached as a producer. Shortly afterward, Dave Green, director of “Earth to Echo...

Another Warner Bros. movie bites the dust.
The studio no longer plans to release “Coyote vs. Acme,” a live action-animation hybrid starring John Cena, which completed filming in 2022. A similar situation transpired a little over a year ago as Warner Bros. shocked the entertainment industry by shelving the $90 million-budgeted DC adventure “Batgirl” and the kid-friendly “Scoob! Holiday Haunt” as tax write-offs.
Those films, as well as the $30 million “Coyote vs. Acme,” were greenlit by the former regime, led by Jason Kilar and intended for release on HBO Max. His successor, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, has shifted the studio’s priorities back to theatrical and felt this movie didn’t fit with the new creative direction of the company. The decision also comes after Bill Damaschke took over Warner Animation Group earlier this year.

In another maneuver by the David Zaslav-run Warner Bros Discovery to kill movies, we hear on very good authority that Warner Bros will not be releasing the hybrid live-action/animated Coyote vs. Acme, with the conglom taking an estimated $30M write-down on the $70M production. We understand the write-down for the pic was applied to the recently reported Q3.
This reps the third time that Zaslav’s Warner Bros has pulled the plug on a movie greenlighted by the previous Warner Media administration, the other two being the Max-destined Batgirl and the animated Scoob Holiday Haunt!
The difference here is that Coyote vs. Acme is a completed movie with very good test scores, 14 points above the family norm. We’re told that the cash-strapped Warners finds that it’s not worth the cost to release the film theatrically or to sell to other buyers (and there are parties who...

A little over a year after the shelving of Batgirl sent shockwaves throughout Hollywood, Warner Bros. is putting another of its films in the studio vault.
Warners no longer plans to release Coyote vs. Acme, a live-action, CG animation hybrid that completed principal photography last year in New Mexico. The move follows veteran animation executive Bill Damaschke taking over Warner Animation Group earlier this year.
“For three years, I was lucky enough to make a movie about Wile E. Coyote, the most persistent, passionate, and resilient character of al time,” filmmaker Dave Green wrote on X after this story initially published. “I was surrounded by a brilliant team, who poured their souls into this project. … Along the ride, we were embraced by test audiences who rewarded us with fantastic scores.”
The feature, which sources believe cost around $72 million to make, had key Warners talent involved in front of the camera and behind the scenes.

One cannot understate the popularity of Ron Howard's over-designed 2000 winter holiday film "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas." Although made for an exorbitant budget of $123 million, "Grinch" would earn over $345 million worldwide and become a Christmastime staple in many a home. This despite being a bloated, 105-minute expansion of a 1957 Dr. Seuss picture book that was only 64 pages.
Seuss' "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" was previously adapted into a 25-minute TV special in 1966, which itself garnered animated follow-ups in 1977 and 1982. Since 2000, the book was also made into a 2007 stage musical, a 2018 animated film called merely "The Grinch," and a 2020 filmed version of the stage production. 2022 also saw the release of a horror spoof of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" called "The Mean One."

Jon M. Chu's 2018 romantic comedy "Crazy Rich Asians" -- based on the novel by Kevin Kwan -- was a massive, massive hit. Made for only $30 million, Chu's lightweight puffball grossed $239 million worldwide. It follows the adventures of a young economics professor named Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) who has been enjoying her romantic relationship with the dash-handsome Nick Young (Henry Golding). Nick is called back to his home country of Singapore to attend a wedding, and Rachel is reluctantly invited along. Reluctantly, because Nick has been trying to keep his vast wealth hidden from Rachel. It seems his family is practically royalty in Singapore, inviting new conversations about honesty and their inescapable class divide into their relationship. Also, Nick's family doesn't necessarily approve of a middle-class woman dating one of their own, and some of them accuse Rachel of being a golddigger.

A TikTok video highlighting a behind-the-scenes gaffe in How the Grinch Stole Christmas has gone viral.
The film, released in 2000, was adapted from the popular children’s book by Dr Seuss, and starred Jim Carrey in the lead role.
To portray the Grinch, Carrey wore extensive make-up that sometimes took as many as eight hours to apply. As well wearing green, furry skin, Carrey also changed the colour of his eyes, from brown to an unnatural amber colour.
However, as a video created by TikTok user @redcobweb shows, there was one moment the special effects team seemingly missed.
“Every time I watch the Grinch I notice this one little mistake they made whether they forgot to either put his contacts in or to edit them in afterwards,” they said.
“So just Jim Carrey’s brown eyes are just there. And in the next scene, they’re back to that.”

The Grinch has come a long way since Dr. Seuss first published How the Grinch Stole Christmas in 1957. The story of the furry green curmudgeon has been adapted for TV, film, the stage, and now YouTube. Dr. Seuss Enterprises has released a new web series, which gives the Grinch his very own vlog.
The web series is available on the official Dr. Seuss YouTube channel, which launched in 2019. In the first episode, the titular loner goes through his morning routine. He wakes up, says his affirmations, and complains about the guy from the North Pole who is “happy all the time.”
By episode two, the Grinch is attempting to convince viewers that there’s something to his hatred of Christmas. “The Whos with their lights…kind of a weird relationship if you ask me,” he says. “They’ve got some sort of light fetish. It makes me uncomfortable, to be honest.

This weekend was never going to be a great one at the box office. In fact, the top five mostly remained the same from last weekend as no movie opened or expanded into more than 1,000 theaters.
Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” became the third movie of 2022 to cross the 400 million mark on Friday, as it won a fifth weekend in a row with an estimated 11.1 million, down just 37 from last weekend. So far, “Wakanda Forever” has grossed 409.8 million in North America, making it the 36th highest-grossing, having passed the gross of 2016’s “Captain America: Civil War” with “Iron Man 3” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” in its sights, as well as “Wonder Woman,” since it should make a few million in the coming week.

Plot: A parody of the classic Dr. Seuss story How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, The Mean One imagines what it would have been like if the Grinch was a bloodthirsty killer.
Review: Theodor “Dr. Seuss” Geisel first told the world How the Grinch Stole Christmas back in 1957, when the story – written in rhymed verse – was published as a book and also in the pages of Redbook magazine. That tale has been a beloved classic for sixty-five years now, and has received multiple adaptations over the decades, including an animated TV movie that was narrated by Boris Karloff, a 2000 live-action film starring Jim Carrey as the Grinch, a computer animated film with Benedict Cumberbatch voicing the Grinch, and a popular musical. They all keep the same basic story intact: a furry green fellow called the Grinch lives in a cave overlooking the town of Whoville, and becomes deeply annoyed with the town’s Christmas celebrations.

With the unprecedented success of Terrifier 2, Art the Clown cemented his place as a horror icon of the modern age. While the Terrifier franchise has become synonymous with Halloween, Art actor David Howard Thornton is slashing into Christmas with The Mean One, an unauthorized horror parody of Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
The indie film is directed by Steven Lamorte (Never Leave Alive) and written by Flip Kobler – best known for penning such direct-to-video Disney sequels as The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride, Pocahontas 2: Journey to a New World, and Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas – and his son, Finn Kobler.
Nearly 20 years after an unidentified intruder dressed as Santa Claus kills her mother, Cindy You-Know-Who (Krystle Martin) returns to the small town of Newville with her father (Flip Kobler) to sell their family home. Cindy is skeptical about returning, but her therapist...

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I am in complete support of children's entertainment icons being repurposed into horrific killers. While it might be a bit cheap, I'm of the belief that these stories serve to de-establish the creative control that soul-sucking companies have on these characters. While not necessarily an act of artistic rebellion, parodies that twist the meanings of stories popularized by the likes of Disney or Warner Bros. should be welcomed with a lot more intrigue than the disdain they are often given by those stuck in the past.
At the same time, however, that doesn't mean that they are given a free pass from making a compelling and technically sound film, and "The Mean One" is certainly not that. Branding itself as an unauthorized parody of Hallmark Christmas movies and a certain Dr. Seuss Christmas classic, director Steven Lamorte makes this crabby scrooge into a...

Atlas Film Distribution has launched the trailer for ‘The Mean One,’ a slasher parody film based on the classic Dr. Seuss character The Grinch.
The Grinch steals a lot more than Christmas in this forthcoming horror parody/sequel to the classic Dr. Seuss yuletide tale.
The story takes place in the little town of Newville where a green monster lurks menacingly in his home in the mountains above. Every holiday season, the beast dons a red Santa suit and pays a visit to the village to wreak havoc among its citizens.
Young Cindy You-Know-Who lost both of her parents to the monster twenty years ago and has now returned to Newville in search of vengeance. With the grumpy, green-skinned menace ready to kill once again, Cindy has to figure out a way to defeat him before he can ruin Christmas.

"Time to roast this beast" XYZ Films has revealed an official trailer for another crazy holiday horror movie titled The Mean One, a slasher parody of The Grinch. Yes, this is real, and it exists, and it's dropping on VOD in December. Apparently they're releasing this for free, most likely because they can't use the Grinch copyright (from Dr. Seuss) and make money off of it, but they can release the finished film as a parody. In a sleepy mountain town, Cindy has her parents murdered and her Christmas stolen by a blood thirsty green figure in a red Santa suit - "The Mean One". When the ravenous, Christmas hating creature terrorizes the town and threatens to ruin the holiday, she finds a new purpose - trapping and killing the monster. Terrifer 2's David Howard Thornton stars as the green meanie, with Krystle Martin as the adult Cindy You-Know-Who out for revenge.

The Grinch's blood-red Santa Claus coat isn't the only splash of crimson that'll be decking the halls this holiday season. Inspired by Dr. Seuss's classic children's story, the hairy green villain is making a killer comeback in XYZ Films' new parody horror movie.
"The Mean One" - which got its title from the song "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch," originally performed by Thurl Ravenscroft in the 1966 animated TV special "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" - reimagines the story of the infamous Grinch by sucking out all the childood whimsy and replacing it with a gruesome storyline that results in piles of blood-stained snow.
If Dr. Seuss's original Grinch was as cuddly as a cactus and as charming as an eel, it sounds like director Steven Lamorte's The Mean One (David Howard Thornton) is someone Cindy You-Know-Who (Krystle Martin) might need to fight off with a 39-and-a-half-foot pole.

In “Strange World,” the world may be super-weird, but those who populate it are some of the most realistic and well rounded that Walt Disney Animation Studios has ever presented. Ergo, it’s the characters as much as the environment that make this vibrant, “Journey to the Center of the Earth”-style adventure movie colorful and diverse in all the best ways. Great as the people and places they explore may be, however, the relatively unimaginative story consigns this gorgeous toon to second-tier status — a notch below director Don Hall’s earlier “Big Hero 6” — instead of cracking the pantheon of Disney classics.
“Strange World” centers on a civilization called Avalonia, which is surrounded by “an impassable ring of mountains.” A sudden (and somewhat underexplained) resource shortage drives three generations of the intrepid Clade family to face the unknown. Swarthy, macho granddad Jaeger (voiced by Dennis Quaid) attempts to forge...

"Master of Disguise" is remembered today for two reasons. The first is a scene in which its star, Dana Carvey, infiltrates an exclusive club known as the Turtle Club by dressing in a large green turtle-like suit. Led by the arm of a pained-looking Jennifer Esposito, Carvey bobs his head and makes noises that sound like a death rattle. He threatens bystanders, retreats into his suit when provoked, and (in the most terrifying scene of all) bites a man's nose off only to spit it right back onto his face. The scene ends with him spinning on his back on the ground, rattling madly. It is a pure manifestation of wrongness on par with the diner scene in "Mulholland Drive."
The second is the pervasive rumor spread via the Internet Movie Database that the Turtle Club scene was filmed on September 11, 2001, leading to a moment of silence on set. An...

Dr. Seuss has been busy of late.
TV and movie projects tied to beloved characters from the inimitable children’s book author and illustrator have been popping up as frequently as Sneetches on the beaches at a time of heightened global demand for marquee content.
Susan Brandt, president and CEO of Dr. Seuss Enterprises, is in charge of the balancing act of making sure Dr. Seuss stays relevant to new generations. That requires fresh content that doesn’t tarnish the value of indelible works like “The Cat in the Hat,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “Horton Hears a Who,” “Hop on Pop,” “One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish” and more. Dr. Seuss was the pen name of Theodor Geisel, who died in 1991 at age 87.
“We’re blessed with this beautiful IP, and we take that responsibility quite seriously,” Brandt explains on the latest episode of Variety podcast “Strictly Business.

Bad Robot will work with community organizations, including Arts in the Armed Forces, Barcid Foundation, The Blackhouse Foundation, Gold House, The Latinx House, Outfest/Outfest Fusion, RespectAbility and Women in Film to distribute 400 of the website fee waivers directly to writers, with The Black List distributing the other 100 to scribes who are already a part of the blcklst.com ecosystem.
Fee waivers are being distributed once a quarter starting today, and will expire 30 days after the end of the quarter,...

“Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” returned to kick off its ninth season on Sunday, and in John Oliver’s main segment of the night, he came for Texas Senator Ted Cruz first.
Really, the issue at hand was critical race theory. But, as Oliver argued, the issue has been politicized and weaponized by conservatives over the past year or so. As evidence, he played a series of clips of conservative parents and politicians railing against critical race theory, including one where Cruz called the concept “bigoted,” “a lie,” and “every bit as racist as the Klansman in white sheets.”
In response, Oliver rattled off a Dr. Seuss-like poem he wrote for the senator.
“I do not like that Ted Cruz man. I do not like him shouting Klan,” Oliver recited. “I do not like him in a room. I do not like him in Cancun. I do not like him playing ball.

Everyone welcomes the spirit of Christmas, except for the cantankerous green-furred creature known as the Grinch, who is forever grumpy about holiday cheer and the joy it brings to people. The character originated in Dr. Seuss's 1957 children's story titled "How the Grinch Stole Christmas."
The children's story was adapted into "The Grinch," a 3D computer-animated movie in 2018, featuring Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice actor for the green curmudgeon. Like in the books, the film followed the mean-tempered, pot-bellied creature as he resides on the snowy Mount Crumpit, located in the town of Whoville, the home of human-like people known as Whos.

Longtime Daily Dead readers may remember that over the course of several years, artist Jeff Fuller showcased the undying humor of everyday horrors in a zombie apocalypse in his morbidly funny comic strip Zomics. We gave you the first taste of new Zomics during our Comic-Con@ Home coverage, and Jeff Fuller is back with a brand new skydiving zombie!
Influenced by Dr. Seuss and The Addams Family creator Charles Addams, Fuller has worked as an award-winning art director for nearly a quarter of a century, garnering multiple Emmy and BDA awards. He turned his artistic talents to zombies when he started thinking about the comedic qualities that would live on in a living dead world:
"The origin of Zomics: While camping with my wife and kids we started discussing what life would be like if there really were zombies. We decided that it would be a little scary, a little...

On Tuesday, that final frontier known as intellectual property was charted when, after five long years in court, a legally adventurous dispute over a Star Trek-Dr. Seuss mashup concluded in a settlement. As a result of a deal, the crowdfunded “Oh, the Places You’ll Boldly Go!” will be going away.
Back in 2016, Dr. Seuss Enterprises sued ComicMix over the book project. The heirs of Theodor S. Geisel claimed their intellectual property — Oh, The Places You’ll Go!, Horton Hears a Who, How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, The Lorax and The Sneetches and Other Stories — was being infringed.
