With the Beastie Boys out of the picture due to Adam Yauch's cancer, the title of main attraction was up for grabs on the final day of the Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival in San Francisco.

Tenacious D, Jack Black and Kyle Gass' jokey acoustic metal duo, replaced the Beasties as the main-stage headliner on Sunday night, but it wasn't entirely clear if the majority of people who showed up in Golden Gate Park were there to see the D (even despite the chants of "We want D!" prior to their set). The band appeared to have a sense of humor about its fill-in status, selling a shirt at the festival that spoofed the Beastie Boys' Check Your Head album cover and warned, »

Tenacious D Fire The Next Shot In The Tweet War With M.I.A. At Outside Lands

30 August 2009 8:30 PM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

The last notes have been played at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, which means the 2009 Outside Lands Festival has wrapped up. Tenacious D closed out the weekend with a crowd-pleasing set of their acoustic metal epics. The Beastie Boys were originally supposed to wrap up the weekend, but they had to bow out due to Adam Yauch's cancer treatments. The choice of replacement raised a few eyebrows, including among other performers on the bill. In fact, M.I.A. (who played the set just before the D on the main stage) posted a series of tweets to her official Twitter about her disappointment with having to go on before Jack Black and Kyle Gass. "Can't believe they replaced Beasties with Tenacious D? And if I pull out they sue! So really? Tenacious D after me?" she wrote on August 22. She also noted that the only reason why she »

6 August 2009 1:38 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Tenacious D -- comprising of superstar comedian Jack Black and Kyle Gass -- will be performing at the Outside Lands music festival in San Francisco on Aug. 30, a headlining slot previously occupied by Beastie Boys. The duo has been largely quiet since the release of the movie and soundtrack to "The Pick of Destiny" in 2006, and a subsequent tour in 2007. Black, of course has been acting in and lending his voice to movies like "Year One," "Kung Fu Panda" and "Tropic Thunder" since then. Tenacious D also released a DVD last year, "The Complete Masterworks 2," chronicling the "Pick... »

A handful of Hollywood's most hilarious actors and actresses gathered together for the premiere of Funny People in La last night. Shaq Was Traded To Cleveland, So LeBron Should Watch His Back

25 June 2009 7:58 AM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

15-time NBA All-Star Shaquille O’Neal is headed to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a blockbuster trade. The idea is that Shaq will provide a presence in the middle so that LeBron won’t have to carry the burden himself. LeBron would be wise not to cross Shaq, as the 300-pounder has been training for a mixed martial arts fight and has been known to spank a man if he crosses him.

That’s exactly what happened back in 2001 when Jack Black and Kyle Gass — better known as Tenacious D (a band name stolen from basketball broadcaster Marv Albert) — sat down for a chat with Shaq. Even though Black praised O’Neal for providing him with one of the more thrilling moments of his life, Shaq still bent the actor/rocker over and gave him what for.

Don’t say we didn’t warn you, LeBron. »

Jack Black has revealed that he and Tenacious D bandmate Kyle Gass have started writing their third album. The actor told Zoo that the duo would begin recording the follow-up to 2006's The Pick Of Destiny when they finish their current projects. When we're done with the projects we're working on, we'll put our nose to the grindstone every day - I guarantee you. At least (more) »

Tenacious D Have Written A Song For New Heavy Metal Movie

22 June 2009 4:00 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Buried in a video interview with MTV, Jack Black mentions that he and Kyle Gass, aka Tenacious D, have written a song for the new Heavy Metal movie. Which doesn't mean that we'll ever hear it, because the project could be perennially stuck in development hell, but the very idea of having a song in the film by the 'D is great. Black also mentions that he's working on a musical comedy with producer Jj Abrams. Granted, neither project is close on the horizon. Check the brief statements by Black. On his collaboration with Abrams: ...I'm talking [to Abrams] about a comedy. A comedy involving music. He would produce. It's too early to say [any more]...I've made the mistake before, of talking about things before they're real, then it doesn't happen, then I'm the one with cupcake on my face. On Heavy Metal: But that movie's also not green-lit. [Saying too much] would ... »

Year One

Year One

Directed by: Harold Ramis

Cast: Jack Black, Michael Cera, Oliver Platt, David Cross

Running Time: 1 hr 40 mins

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: June 19, 2009

Plot: Zed (Black) and Oh (Cera) are two lazy hunter-gatherers who are just trying to scrape by in life. But when Zed gets kicked out of the trip, the two set off on an adventure across the lands.

Who’s It For? If you want to see Black and Cera act like you’ve seen them many times before, just in a new setting, than this is for you. Otherwise, it’s going to be tough to find laughs in this comedy.

Expectations: I’m a huge Cera fan. Black has been hit (Tropic Thunder) and miss (Nacho Libre). As for Harold Ramis directing … I couldn’t help but think that he’s a little past his prime.

Scorecard (0-10)

'Year One' Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

19 June 2009 3:51 AM, PDT | MTV Movie News | See recent MTV Movie News news »

We take you back to the beginning of time — or at least the start of the film's production.

By Eric Ditzian

Jack Black and Michael Cera in "Year One"

Photo: Sony Pictures

We could offer you our own one-line plot description for "Year One," a high-concept comedy set in biblical times, but we prefer star Jack Black's pithy take: "Just two dudes wandering through early civilization."

The dudes in question are Black and Michael Cera, two buddies living in an ancient hunter/gatherer society, trying to hit on ladies and prove their manliness to the tough guys in the village. Neither of these pursuits are working out too well, and after Zed bites into some forbidden fruit and accidently burns everyone's huts down, the two friends set out on an epic journey through time, the Bible and the very limits of PG-13 comedy.

14 June 2009 10:29 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Let's hope Year One can do what Land of the Lost couldn't: Be funny. Sony Pictures also might not mind it if people actually showed up to see it. There's no way to tell if that will happen, but it really does look like they've got the funny thing nailed down. Below we've got eight amazingly hilarious clips from Year One in which Jack Black and Michael Cera crack wise amongst the trappings of the ancient world and a whole host of celebrity cameos. Watch closely below and you'll see Jack's Tenacious D guitarist Kyle Gass as a eunuch and Michael Cera's Superbad compadre Chris Mintz-Plass as... well I guess he's some guy in a hat. Duncan Jones’ Flick Isn’t The Only ‘Moon’ You’ll See This Week

10 June 2009 11:30 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

I’ve got every intention of getting out of the house this weekend to see “Moon.” “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3″ certainly appeals to the action blockbuster maniac in me, but from what I hear Duncan Jones’ sci-fi head trip is where it’s at.

Since I really like to reach for content here on MTV Movies Blog, and since this video is so amusing, here’s another moon for you to check out. This one doesn’t feature Sam Rockwell and Kevin Spacey, and it’s a bit blurry, but you do get Jack Black and Kyle Gass — aka Tenacious D — chatting it up with Shaquille O’Neal. Wondering where the moon fits in? Watch the video and see for yourself.

Black Quits Writing After Tenacious D Movie Flopped

19 May 2009 6:35 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Jack Black abandoned his dream of becoming a successful Hollywood screenwriter after his debut movie Tenacious D: In The Pick Of Destiny flopped.

The film funnyman put pen to paper to write a big screen story about Tenacious D, his musical side project with pal Kyle Gass.

Despite the band's big cult following, the 2006 movie debuted at number 11 in the box office and struggled to make back the $20 million (£13.3 million) spent on it.

The failure knocked Black's confidence so much, he has promised to give up screenwriting for good.

He tells Maxim magazine, "It was a body blow, mainly because we had so much fun making it. I got a lot out of the writing. I was psyched to write more screenplays, but that kind of killed my writing career." »
