With the popularity of V/H/S and the quick distribution deal for sequel S-v/H/S at Sundance, it seems like the VHS format may be having a bit of a renaissance. Cover art is key to the allure of the VHS tape – clearly no one is buying them for their box-filling bulkiness – and almost everyone of a certain age has a story about falling in love with a VHS box only to take it home and find out the movie inside was even better.
I had two obsessions at the video store: One was Frank Henenlotter’s Frankenhooker, which featured a button on the box that, when pushed, played the line “Wanna date?” over and over. Rabid Grannies, which boasted a picture of two hungry-looking zombie grandmothers and the tagline, “They just love their grandchildren... well done!” was the other. To my thirteen-year-old mind that was the funniest idea ever.

Trace Cyrus has had his scalp tattooed with Native American Chief head on Thursday, May 10. He has since shared a picture of the new ink and wrote in a caption of the photo, "Got my head tatted today! Excuse all the ink on my face. And yes this hurt!!!"
The fiance of Brenda Song was accompanied by his father Billy Ray Cyrus at the tattoo parlor. At that time, the "Achy Breaky Heart" singer also got a new tattoo as Trace tweeted, "With my dad! He is getting his back tattooed! Gangster!"
Trace also revealed that he will tattoo the other side of his head next week. "Thank you Chris Garcia for coming up from Vegas to tattoo my family and I. I cant wait till next week to tattoo the other side of my head!" so he wrote.
The Native American Chief tattoo adds collection to Trace's body art works.

The 'Last Song' actress' older brother Trace Cyrus is reportedly expecting a baby with former 'The Suite Life of Zack and Cody' star Brenda Song, according to E!.
It would be the first child for the 23-year-old beauty and Trace, 22, who are thought to have begun dating in May when they appeared at an event for the first time together.
Trace – who has previously dated Demi Lovato – is best known for his band Metro Station and his clothing line, but has made no hint of expanding his family.
Writing on twitter yesterday (23.08.11), he revealed he had enjoyed dinner round his sister Miley's house and now wanted to thieve her new dog.
He wrote: "I just got home from having a nice dinner at Miley's house. Got to say I want to steal her new dog Floyd. He is so awesome!"
The rocker also revealed he was planning to...

Over the course of each awards season, I’m privileged to cross paths with hundreds of fascinating people who work in the film industry. A small percentage are known the world over, but the rest have names and faces which wouldn’t necessarily mean anything even to people in their own communities, despite the fact that they play, in many ways, an equal or greater role in shaping the world of film. Last awards season, I decided that it would be a worthy and worthwhile pursuit to periodically highlight a few of their stories as part of an effort to take visitors to this site behind-the-scenes of the awards season and introduce them to some of its most influential and colorful characters.
Today, I’m pleased to introduce the first installment of the series that will do that, “A Day in the Life,” and its first subject, veteran publicist Carol Marshall...

With badge sales up 25% since last year, the 2010 SXSW Film Conference & Festival has, according to Austin American-Statesman writer Chris Garcia, "evolved with a rapidly changing film culture. It has branched from its roots as a refuge for low- and micro-budget movies that weren't ready for more established events, such as the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, to become a destination for rising independent filmmakers to rub ...

Here's the latest Austin-related film news this week:
Cinematical has posted a teaser trailer for Simon Rumley's Austin-shot horror film Red White & Blue, which is playing SXSW next month. I do believe a great deal of that trailer is set at the Broken Spoke. And Debbie, is that your house where all the, er, shenanigans are occurring? (Speaking of shenanigans, this is not a G-rated trailer by any means.)Over at The Dallas Morning News, Joe O'Connell tells us that a new TV pilot is shooting in Austin next month called Gen Y. Two other pilots will be shooting soon in Dallas, too.On the other hand, Chris Garcia reports that Waxahachie native and Ut alumnus Robert Benton's biopic of Lyndon B. Johnson may not get to shoot in Texas. Apparently HBO prefers the film incentives in Georgia or Louisiana over the Lone Star State. (What would Lbj think?...

The picture to the left has nothing to do with anything released in the last ten years, but it is from a movie.
Here in the Alamo programming office, movies are a big deal. We each watch approximately 215 movies per day, seven days a week, no holidays.
It’s a tough job…especially when it comes time to narrow down our favorites at the end of each year. It’s even more difficult to figure out what the best 20 films were in the past decade. But we do it all for you.
The lists below represent the most powerful and/or entertaining films of 2009, plus the finest we’ve seen since Y2K destroyed civilization. Take a look, disagree, get furious and attack us on the street.
Warning: We’ve got switchblades.

I saw Mother at Cannes this year and it blew me out of the water.
