Kebab Royal
Directors: Peter Brosens & Jessica Woodsworth
Writers: Peter Brosens & Jessica Woodsworth
Another Belgian directing duo we’re committed to championing is Peter Brosens and Jessica Woodsworth (who we also included prematurely on our 2015 list). Starting out as documentarians, they segued into narrative film with 2006’s Khadak, eventually spinning a loosely related trilogy with 2009’s Altiplano and 2012’s The Fifth Season (2012). While it’s possible to obtain copies of the first two, for some confounding reason, their last feature never received distribution in the Us even though it’s a fascinating, transfixing film. They filmed their latest, Kebab Royal, past March, which is now in post-production. Their films are often characterized by offbeat, surreal flourishes, and their latest concerns Nicolas II, the onerous Belgian King. Stuck on an economic mission in Istanbul, he learns of Flanders’ declaration for dependence while he’s away, and a simultaneous solar storm knocks out communication and airplanes.

The After Dark Film Festival will host eight new indie horror features this year. After Dark has already announced that Paul Soter's Dark Circles and the Irish themed Red Clover will participate. Also taking part is Todor Chapkanov's Asylum. This looks like a bloody title involving the supernatural, spirituality and a whole institution run amok. The story is simple. When a troupe of soldiers are sent in a la Aliens, they find the fight of their lives. The first trailer for Asylum is available. In the clip, a small army group must face hundreds of escaped patients. Even the staff seems infected with a powerful and seductive force. Have a look at the clip inside, with the launch of After Dark 2 coming soon. Director: Todor Chapkanov. Cast: Jason Wong, Stephen Rea, Bruce Payne, Caroline Ford, Hristo Shopov, Steve Toussaint, Valentin Ganev, and Joe Montana. The first trailer for...

This is a Pure Movies review of The Way Back, directed by Peter Weir and starring Ed Harris, Colin Farrell, Jim Sturgess, Saoirse Ronan, Dejan Angelov, Yordan Bikov, Dragos Bucur, Sattar Dikambayev, Sally Edwards and Valentin Ganev. It's been seven long years since acclaimed Australian director Peter Weir’s (Gallipoli, The Truman Show) last cinematic outing – 2003's Master and Commander – but The Way Back finds him again exploring a similar Boys’ Own yarn of an adventure. Based on a true story, it recounts the extraordinary escape from a Russian gulag by a group of men in 1940. Extraordinary because they managed to escape the camp and subsequently survived the Siberian wilderness and trekked a staggering 4,000 miles – crossing the Himalayas to reach India for their eventual freedom. To put that in perspective, that’s like walking from Land’s End to John O’Groats and back again… in some of the worst...

Some new images and a new, 6-minute behind-the-scenes look at the making of Scott Adkins’ “Ninja”, featuring cast interviews and additional footage not seen before. Plus, the girls express their appreciation of Scott Adkins’ hunkiness, while there are some new ninja action for the boys. Mind you, I’m not saying some of you boys can’t also appreciate Scott Adkins’ hunkiness. Ahem. Directed by Isaac Florentine, the film stars Scott Adkins as our ninja hero, Tsuyoshi Ihara as our ninja villain, Mika Hijii as our spry Japanese love interest, Todd Jensen as our befuddled New York cop. They are joined by Togo Igawa, Garrick Hagon, Miles Anderson, Valentin Ganev , Kenji Motomiya, and Nikolai Sotirov. Via Scott Adkins Fanz and the “Ninja” YouTube channel. This is apparently the first of 3 behind-the-scenes featurette. We’ll add them here as they’re added to the channel. Behind-the-Scenes: Part 1...

Five incredibly cool behind-the-scenes clips from Isaac Florentine and Scott Adkins’ upcoming martial arts actioner “Ninja”. There are plenty of new footage in the clips, but there are also some nifty lessons about the history of the ninja. Is any of it true? Um, probably not, but not like you care. It’s got ninjas, girls, Scott Adkins, and kick-ass action. Any questions? A westerner named Casey, studying Ninjutsu in Japan, is asked by the Sensei to return to New York to protect the legendary Yoroi Bitsu, an armored chest that contains the weapons of the last Koga Ninja. Starring Scott Adkins, Tsuyoshi Ihara, Mika Hijii, Todd Jensen, Togo Igawa, Garrick Hagon, Miles Anderson, Valentin Ganev, Kenji Motomiya, Nikolai Sotirov, and directed by Isaac Florentine. Thanks to the boys at Scott Adkins Fanz for the heads up. For more “Ninja” videos, check out their YouTube channel. Ninja Clip: Fists of Fury...

You know, it’s probably a damn shame that Scott Adkins’ “Ninja” won’t make it into theaters. It’s probably got better action choreography than 90% of the stuff Hollywood puts out there at the moment, if this kick-ass clip from Isaac Florentine’s movie is any indication. Sure, the plot isn’t going to win any awards, and I’m not gonna crow about the acting, either. But let’s face it, it’s a movie called “Ninja”. Whaddaya want, “Gone with the Wind”? It’s about the action. Ninja action, baby! Check out this subway fight clip from the movie. Second trailer for Scott Adkins’ martial arts movie “Ninja” via the boys over at Scott Adkins Fanz. It’s a lot shorter than the first trailer, but that’s probably because they dispensed with the exposition in favor of balls-to-the-wall action scenes. Starring Scott Adkins, Tsuyoshi Ihara, Mika Hijii, Todd Jensen, Togo Igawa, Garrick Hagon, Miles Anderson, Valentin Ganev, Kenji Motomiya, and Nikolai Sotirov. Isaac Florentine directs. function getVideo() { var so = new SWFObject("http://cdn.springboard.gorillanation.com/storage/xplayer/yo033.swf", "mplayer", "540", "330", "8", "#000000"); so.addParam("swliveconnect", "true"); so.addParam("allowscriptaccess", "always"); so.addParam("allowfullscreen", "true"); so.addVariable("pid", "byhw001"); so.addVariable("siteId", "243"); so.addVariable("videoId", "49423"); so.addVariable("file", "http://cms.springboard.gorillanation.com/xml_feeds_advanced/index/243/3/49423/"); so.addVariable("pageUrl", document.location); so.write("flashcontent_243_byhw001_single_49423"); } getVideo();...
