Strategic Partners, a presentation of the Atlantic Film Festival, has announced the producers selected to participate as part of the inaugural project exchange with Mexico’s Los Cabos International Film Festival and Brazil’s RioContentMarket, in addition to an incredible line-up of producers and projects. As part of a two year spotlight on Latin America, one Mexican producer with a feature film in development and one Brazilian producer with a television project in development have been invited to participate at Strategic Partners 2014, September 11 - 14 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. A Canadian feature film in development will then be selected from this year’s Strategic Partners to participate at Los Cabos International Film Festival, November 11 - 14, 2014. Additionally, a Canadian television project in development looking for Brazilian co-production partners will be chosen to attend RioContentMarket, February 2015. This initiative is sponsored by the Canadian Media Production Association.
Producer and co-founder of the Mexican production company Agrupación Caramelo Cinematografica, April Shannon, has been selected to participate in this year’s Strategic Partners from Los Cabos International Film Festival. Shannon’s impressive career includes working as producer on Bernardo Arellano’s "Between Night and Day" as well as production manager on James Franco’s "The Broken Tower." Shannon recently produced Arellano’s second feature "The Beginning of Time," now in post-production, to be released in late 2014. Shannon will bring the dark thriller "Franco’s Night" to Strategic Partners with production slated for 2015 in Mexico.
Brazilian producer Marcelo Galvão has been selected from RioContentMarket’s esteemed alumni of 2014. Galvão established production company Gatacine in 2001 and has since directed six features including "Farewell," "La Rina and Bellini"and the "Devil." He has won over 50 renowned awards including Best Film at the Gramado Film Festival, Best Director at the Los Angeles Brazilian Film Festival and Best Screenwriter at Paulína Film Festival (Brazil) among many others. Galvão will bring the highly anticipated television miniseries, The Gardener, to this year’s Strategic Partners.
“Ushering in the very first project exchange with producers April Shannon and Marcelo Galvão sets the bar incredibly high and truly complements the illustrious roster of delegates we will have at this year’s events,” says Strategic Partners Director, Laura Mackenzie. “The results couldn’t have been more ideal and I look forward to continuing our newly founded relationships with Los Cabos International Film Festival and RioContentMarket.”

Director: Nick Cohen.
Writers: Mark Anthony Galluzzo and Chris Baker.
This review is going back a little to After Dark Horrorfest's 2010 lineup which included The Reeds. This is a film that sees several friends boating around the United Kingdom in tragic fashion. This weekender involves exploding propane tanks, vicious burns and gory impalements. Most would classify this title a horror film, but the film goes a little deeper than that into history and into tragedy.
Laura (Anna Brewster), Joe (Daniel Caltagirone), Mel (Emma Catherwood), Nick (O.T. Fagbenle) and Chris (Will Mellor) head out on a boat rented to them by Mr. Croker (George Bell). Quickly, they become lost in head height reeds, until there is a light in the distance. That light is firelight and burning is Mr. Croker's dog. This is some foreshadowing for events to come as several cast members will meet a similar fiery fate.

The Reeds is a Funnyman Films production that will release January 29th with several other titles in the 2010 Horrorfest Film Festival. Financed by Screen East, Siverstream Productions, Altadena Films, Delacheroy Films, and Di Dragon, The Reeds now has a final, bloodier, film poster (click for a better look). Showing endless lines of tall grass this one-sheet centers on the tagline "No Outs." The Reeds official poster also displays dark reds that fade into blackness. Eerie and sinister enough for a horror festival, The Reeds movie poster stands out as being one of the better film posters to be released, despite the simplicity of the picture. Have a look for yourselves at the poster, synopsis and the cast right here.
An overview of The Reeds:
"In the film, a weekend boating trip through the Norfolk Broads becomes a deadly ordeal for six 20-something year old friends who lose their bearings in the vast reedy tidewaters.

Ghosts have to get a new hobby. Seriously. They die in a specific place, probably tortured and murdered there, then haunt that location and raise hell for the living. We've seen it time and time again, now see it in The Reeds , a UK chiller from Nick Cohen ( Voodoo Lagoon ) starring Scarlett Alice Johnson and Geoff Bell ( Rocknrolla ). Long Time Dead scribe Chris Baker penned the story with Mark Anthony Galluzzo. And the premise is simple: A boating party gets lost in the ancient waterways of the Norfolk Broads and finds itself victim of a terrifying secret hidden in the reeds. Said "secret" appears to be a bunch of dead thugs (one of them charred, it seems), according to the trailer which we got our hands on. See for yourself below. Hopefully this will have...

Strong acting by a trio of leads and much astute writing and directing from Mark Anthony Galluzzo, in his feature debut, can't keep the well-intentioned "Trash" from self-destructing during its final reel. The low-budget indie bows locally Tuesday as part of the second annual Method Fest, a minishowcase of "breakout acting performances," at Laemmle's Playhouse 7 in Pasadena.
Talk about breaking out. While it never quite penetrates his thick skull long enough to avoid a tragic denouement, headliner Jeremy Sisto's rough-and-tumble character, Sonny, needs to immediately flee the small-town poverty that he has always known. Car mechanic Sonny's best friend, Anthony Eric Michael Cole), is a ready companion for the usual pressure-releasing activities -- fighting, drinking, joyriding with girls -- but this quieter, more introspective "cracker" just may have a knack for writing.
Filmed in Florida and surprisingly accomplished in all technical aspects, "Trash" knowingly collides with some cliches and avoids others. Underscoring the loosely plotted story of Sonny and Anthony's struggle to find a better life or be content with the one they have are the repressed emotions both have for the accidental death of another friend while hunting in the woods, a bloody event that occurs in the effectively unsettling opening.
Employing a nonessential narration and other none-too-
revolutionary techniques, including too much slow-motion in crucial sequences, Galluzzo is, overall, successful in creating believable "poor white trash" leads, including CJ (Jaime Pressly), a "rich girl" who takes a liking to Anthony.
The seemingly mismatched romance is a counterpoint to the simmering resentment of Sonny toward anyone who claims to be better than he and his ilk. But the truth is always more complex than it first appears in Galluzzo's often sparkling script.
Although his school principal gushes that he could be a prodigy, Anthony's no genius. He does know how crummy Sonny's home life is and earnestly tries to get them both on their way to college. But Sonny and Galluzzo take the easy way out, and the violent, flawed finale exists mainly to provide Sisto (CBS' "Jesus") with an opportunity to exercise his considerable thespian talents.
Jonathan Banks as CJ's protective father and Grace Zabriskie and Veronica Cartwright in minor roles are momentarily reassuring presences. But it's not hard to pick up on this project's sternly dramatic arc, which starts and ends violently and rarely lightens up in its sympathetic portrayal of all-too-human "Trash".
