Providing the requisite stopgap between showy Thanksgiving distractions and award season stragglers, female directors and assorted indie debutantes are making a strong showing this week.
'What's Eating Elissa Down?' is the question to ask as the award-winning director of Aussie shorts makes the jump to features with this semi-autobiographical tale of a frustrated adolescent on the verge of manhood weighed down by his responsibilities to his autistic younger brother. Daytime soap star Rhys Wakefield takes the role of the Gilbert Grape-esque Thomas, a burdened army brat charged with his brother's care while his parents drag the two up and down the country until he meets Jackie, a free spirit who teaches him how to shed his bitterness. The always impressive Toni Collette anchors this teenage ensemble as the boy's mother, Maggie. Luke Ford and Gemma Ward co-star.
Opens in New York and Los Angeles. »

If you think back to the warmer days of summer, you might remember that Jessica posted about an upcoming Internet porn flick called Middle Men. Set to be a comedy, the film was said to follow some normal dude who ends up in the center of that biz we call adult entertainment during the early days of Internet porn (mid-90s, I guess?).
And now we have our men of porn. Variety reports that James Caan, Gabriel Macht, Peter Stormare, and Rachael Taylor have signed on for the film, which will star Luke Wilson and Giovanni Ribisi -- all in yet-to-be-disclosed parts. The film is also sounding a wee bit different these days. Yes, it's still about some regular guy -- a "straight-and-narrow businessman who builds the first online billing company dealing exclusively with adult entertainment." But then there's a bit of an insane twist. He »

Ever wanted to know how the porn industry ended up taking over the Web? According to Variety, George Gallo is set to direct “Middle Men,” a comedy about the origins of the Internet porn business.
The film is the first project to be developed by Oxymoron Entertainment and will focus on a businessman who’s thrust into the world of online porn. That’s all we know about the plot at this stage.
Gallo is directing a script he co-wrote with Andy Weiss.
Looking back at Gallo’s credits as a writer, I’m not so sure this film is such a brilliant idea. After all, Gallo is partly responsible for Les Mayfield’s disastrous comedy “Code Name: The Cleaner.” Then again, he also came up with the story of “Bad Boys. »
