What are the best music videos of the noughties?

24 December 2009 3:07 AM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Let us know your favourite pop promos of the decade

What makes a great pop video? Explosive action? Mind-bending animation? Bling? Bottles of Cristal? Being ripped off in the latest TV advert? One viewer's masterpiece is another's dross, and they will never agree.

And there are simply more videos now than there used to be. In the 70s and 80s, quality videos stood out because there wasn't much else around – Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, Jacko's Thriller and Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer were events. Now videos cram every corner of YouTube, blogs and TV channels from Viva to MTV.

In the noughties, having a director for your video wasn't enough – they had to be a big name. Hype Williams was one of the busiest, shooting videos such as Kanye West's Gold Digger and Stronger, Beyoncé's Check on It and Coldplay's Viva La Vida. Other directors such as Mark Romanek »

Spotlight: Bono's Charity Work

22 December 2009 4:34 AM, PST | Look to the Stars | See recent Look to the Stars news »

There are few people in the music industry who have the presence of Bono. The Irish frontman of U2 knows no limitations when it comes to fighting poverty and hunger, and is constantly in direct contact with world leaders and policy makers in his quest to make the world a better place.

Bono was inspired to get involved in charity work after seeing The Secret Policeman’s Ball in 1979. In 1986 he helped organize Amnesty International's Conspiracy Of Hope tour alongside Sting, who was one of the Secret Policeman’s Ball performers seen by Bono, Peter Gabriel, Lou Reed, and Bryan Adams. He also got involved in the Band Aid and Live Aid projects which were organized by Bob Geldof – another Secret Policeman’s Ball performer, and later helped Geldof organize the 2005 Live 8 project.

Abba and Genesis inducted into Hall of Fame

16 December 2009 2:20 AM, PST | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Abba have made the list of Hall of Fame inductees this year. Other inductees include the rock band Genesis, Jimmy Cliff, The Hollies and The Stooges - Iggy Pop's band. Abba, the Swedish pop group, are one of the most popular music acts of all time, with their unforgettable hits played well beyond their heyday. A stage and film musical, Mamma Mia, has lately kept their appeal red-hot. Abba's members, Agnetha Faltskog, Benny Andersson, pictured, Bjorn Ulvaeus and Annifrid Lyngstad, disbanded in 1982 and have never got back together, despite offers to do so. Genesis were led by Peter Gabriel, who went on to major solo success. Phil Collins, another solo star, took over »

Rahul Sharma wows audience at concert

30 November 2009 11:35 PM, PST | RealBollywood.com | See recent RealBollywood news »

Santoor maestro Rahul Sharma recently performed in a concert, “One World Many Music” at Ncpa. The concert was a rare type that had Rahul showcasing his abilities in different genres of music.

The concert hall was packed with people who were awestruck when Rahul began to play. He blended Indian classical with world music and created a fine fusion.

Rahul has collaborated with French pianist Richard Clayderman for two albums, he has recorded with pop musician Peter Gabriel’d and has done an album with Kenny G which will release next year.

He has also composed the music for Yash Chopra’s Mujhse Dosti Karoge, thus becoming one of the youngest composers for whom Lata Mangeshkar sang. All of his achievements so early. »

Vampire Weekend's 'Cousins' Video: The Key Scene

19 November 2009 1:45 PM, PST | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

Picking out a key scene from "Cousins," the just-premiered-today video from Vampire Weekend, is something of a mistake. After all, the spastic new clip is all about kinetic energy. The entirety of its three minutes takes place in an alley and features frontman Ezra Koenig rolling backwards and forwards on a track set up in the middle of the street. The clip mixes in a lot of low-fi cuts and funny visual gags, but one thing stays the same: It never stops moving. It's a perfect marriage of visuals to music, as the tune is a prototypical Vampire Weekend workout, full of spastic guitar twitches and rhythms that keep threatening to run away from the track entirely.

However, there is one shot that perfectly melds together just about everything that is brilliant about Vampire Weekend. During the second verse, Koenig is dressed in a tuxedo, and he holds a martini »

'Say Anything' And John Cusack: 'We've Now Reached The Completely Surreal'

11 November 2009 8:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Last week, a pack of Lloyd Dobler look-alikes descended on Times Square in New York City to celebrate the 20th anniversary (and 20th anniversary DVD release) of director Cameron Crowe's '80s classic, "Say Anything...," one of "2012" star John Cusack's early iconic roles. So last week, when MTV's Josh Horowitz sat down with Cusack for the "2012" press junket -- it's out on Friday -- he brought along a little souvenir for the star to play with.

Just listen to the response, look at how he recoils at the sight of Josh's mock-boombox. For anyone who missed the reference: Cusack holds a boombox blasting Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" up over his head in one of the movie's most memorable moments. Clearly, he's spent the last 20 years having that fateful moment replayed for him in interviews. You can hardly blame the guy for shrinking back.

Cusack is a good sport though, »

Say Anything 20th anniversary commemorated with flash mob of Lloyd Doblers

5 November 2009 6:50 AM, PST | GordonandtheWhale | See recent GordonandtheWhale news »

Damn you, Lloyd Dobler, you have ruined me for any other man.  That statement is only slightly true, but I will say that I am more inclined to consider a guy if he stands outside my window blasting Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” from his boombox.  This past Tuesday was the release of the 20th anniversary edition of Say Anything, which is one of my favorite eighties teen films.

'Say Anything...' Anniversary Brings Lloyd Dobler To New York City's Time Square

4 November 2009 10:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

by Holly Lunn

It was a bit chilly in New York City yesterday, but that didn’t stop a legion of Lloyd Dobler look-a-likes wearing trench coats and holding boomboxes in the air from running around Times Square. The occasion: the Cameron Crowe-directed, John Cusack-starring '80s classic "Say Anything…" is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a new Blu-ray and DVD release this week.

For those of you who are too young to know, "Say Anything..." is a movie about two kids who fall in love unexpectedly after their high school graduation. Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack) is an average boy who really doesn’t really have strong ambitions. He asks the valedictorian Diane Court (Ione Skye), one of those sheltered smart girls, out on a date.

Over the course of their summer together, he falls in love with Diane. But with Diane heading off to Europe, Lloyd is »

Lloyd Dobler Mob Invades New York For 'Say Anything' Anniversary

4 November 2009 8:18 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

The 20th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray and DVD of Say Anything came out yesterday, and to mark the occasion, numerous men with lots of free time dressed up in trench coats and hoisted boomboxes above their heads and marched throughout New York City serenading people with the strains of Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes," and a cover version of the same song by The Lloyd Dobler Effect. Check them out in the gallery below.

Damn, that movie came out 20 years ago? That makes me feel incredibly old. The first time I saw that movie will be forever burned into my brain since it was my first and only date with the captain of the women's volleyball team in high school. However, the movie on Blu-ray looks better than it ever did back in theaters, circa 1989, and hopefully it'll inspire legions of Lloyd Dobler fans for years to come that will fare better than I did. »

Peter Gabriel announces covers album

29 October 2009 10:10 PM, PDT | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Peter Gabriel has revealed plans to release an orchestral covers album, which will include songs by Radiohead, Arcade Fire and Elbow. Entitled Scratch My Back, the LP will be a "song swap" with a host of "extremely legendary artists" covering each other's material. "The songs are not simply covers," Gabriel collaborator John Metcalfe told BBC 6 Music. "They are major reinterpretations of some famous stuff. It's quite radical." Although the record is not expected until spring 2010, a tentative tracklisting has been released by (more) »

Watch: 'Are We Still Married?' by The Quay Brothers

17 October 2009 7:02 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

The eccentric stop-motion geniuses (and identical twins) the Quay Brothers, aka Stephen and Timothy Quay and/or the Brothers Quay, create mesmerizing and wonderfully creepy stop-motion films since their first films in the '70s. With a wild assortment of esoteric influences from Polish animators, Kafka and Bruno Schulz (whose book The Street of Crocodiles inspired their short film by the same name), and an assortment of Eastern European composers and puppeteers, the Quay Brothers could be (and have been) studied in great detail by film scholars -- or just enjoyed by viewers who love their dark and uncanny worlds of broken dolls, over-loved stuffed animals, and clockwork creatures.

One of my favorite short films of theirs is a video they did for the song "Are We Still Married?" by the haunting Michigan group His Name is Alive. The two groups of artists mesh perfectly, and in fact did collaborate on another video as well, »

Phish's Halloween Show: Which Album Will Survive?

9 October 2009 8:20 AM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

Ever since Phish announced that they would be hosting their own three-day festival, which will be taking place on October 30 & 31 and November 1 in Indio, California at the same site as the annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, speculation launched immediately about what the band would do for their "musical costume." One of the group's many traditions is to cover a classic album in its entirety on Halloween (past costumes include the Velvet Underground's Loaded and the Who's Quadrophenia), and this year will be no different.

As a way to build anticipation for the Halloween show (and the weekend itself, which is simply being called Festival 8), the band's official Web site currently contains a massive gallery of album covers. Each of these covers will be eliminated one-by-one (via a scary animated axe, complete with horror movie blood) until the last record standing gets crowned the victor. (It should be noted »

Updates: Top 50 Hottest Young Actors - Rising Stars!

'Celebrating cinema's emerging talents' - That's our new slogan, and I think tMF has come a long way, but of course there is still room for improvement. I think we're lucky that our viewers care enough to tell us both our good and bad points. The October edition of the Top 50 Hitlist will reflect all these... In the meantime, tMF puts the spotlight on today's rising stars - these are the guys who really made a lot of buzz - grabbed plum roles despite intense competition and would be working with the industry's topnotch filmmakers, and more.

Find out who they are - you've certainly heard some of them and a few might be unfamiliar names, but take a closer look - you might be missing some names who are still 'under the radar' but would soon be rockin' the scene!
