Nickelodeon has picked up the global rights for “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” from the Mirage Group and 4Kids Entertainment in a deal reportedly worth $60 million.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Nickelodeon will produce a new “Turtles” CG-animated TV series in 2012 to coincide with the new live-action “Turtles” movie. The current “Tmnt” animated series will continue to air on The CW network’s Saturday lineup through August 2010.
"’Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ shares a comedic sensibility with the Nickelodeon DNA,” explained Nickelodeon President Cyma Zarghami. "We are extremely happy to have the opportunity to be able to focus on this property and creatively re-introduce it to a new generation of kids."
Under the terms of the agreement, Nickelodeon has also acquired all of the merchandising rights for the “Turtles”, including a longstanding action figure deal with Playmates.

Paramount and Nickelodeon have Turtle Power. In a big $60 million dollar acquisition deal -- as reported today by Variety -- Viacom has acquired the rights to one of the most successful television/film/toy/comic franchises of all-time, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Their plans for the franchise are simple. Nickelodeon will produce a new CG-animated television series, which is slated to premiere in 2012. Also dropping in 2012 is a new film, which will be under the Paramount banner. From what we can tell, it is going to be the same project that 'Turtles' creator Peter Laird and producer Scott Mednick were working on at the Mirage Group, a story we reported on back in April. The film is said to be a live-action, CG-animated hybrid that will be a Batman Begins style reboot, in which the origins of the Turtles are rebooted with a new tone. Marshall Todd (”Bad Boys II”), John Fusco (”The Forbidden Kingdom”) and David Klass (”Walking Tall”) have all previously worked on attempted adaptations of the novel. No other news has been announced yet about the project. Stay tuned to Shockya.com for more “Apache” news. By Costa Koutsoutis (Source: Variety.com) »

Jerry ‘let’s blow some shit up’ Bruckheimer has been trying to get an adaptation for the novel Apaches up and running since 1997 when he bought the rights.
The novel was written by Lorenzo Carcaterra and tells the story of a group of 6 NYPD cops that after being pensioned-off decide to continue fighting crime even without the law behind them. They target an evil drug cartel baroness known as Lucia using all their expertise to bring her empire down.
The project has gone through many writers in the past including Marshall Todd, John Ridley, John Fusco and David Klass. It seems now Jerry Bruckheimer has finally found the two writers he thinks will bring the project full circle.
Sean O’Keefe and Will Staples have reportedly been hired to adapt the renegade cop story. I can only assume with both writers cutting their teeth by writing the videogames Pursuit Force and Lair, »

Jerry Bruckheimer has been developing a movie version of the novel Apaches since he acquired the rights to the novel in 1997, but the mega-producer isn't one to give up easy, and has just hired two new screenwriters to have a new crack at the script. Sean O'Keefe and Will Staples are the latest to try their hands at a story of renegade New York cops that's just crying out for a film version. The book, by Sleepers author Lorenzo Carcaterra, sees a group of pensioned-off NYPD cops set themselves a new mission to continue to fight crime even without the law. The six friends - one of whom has mafia rather than cop connections - set themselves against an Arizona-based drug cartel baroness known as Lucia, both sides using their cross-country connections to strike against one another. The plan is to base the new script only loosely on the novel, »

Ever since the announcement of a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, fans around the world have anxiously waited to learn more about the film. Would it be fun and family-friendly like the previous live-action Tmnt films? Or, would the story be edgier and more violent like the original Tmnt comics? Producers Scott Mednick and Galen Walker were on hand at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con to answer some of these questions and more.
During the panel, Walker elaborated on the film’s focus and the desire to bring the story back to the 25-year-old franchise’s origins.
“Our point of view is this: go back and look at the original Turtles comics. They are very dark. The audience is much more sophisticated than they were in 1990. This is 2009. Take the new Harry Potter for example. It is rated PG and it’s still a very dark film. We are headed that direction. »

From their beginnings as a comic, through the years of video games and cartoons, various iterations of movies, and the amazing toy lines that have been produced, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have always had a soft spot in many people's hearts. This year at Comic-Con marks the 25th anniversary of the Tmnt, and the progression towards what fans really want in a new Turtles movie appears to be on the horizon. I was fortunate enough to be at the Tmnt panel this afternoon, and we were able to get an early feel for what the new Tmnt live-action film currently being written by John Fusco will be all about. Producers Scott Mednick and Galen Walker were on hand to answer a few questions about the new film, currently scheduled for a release sometime in 2011. "I love the Turtles. Young Guns and Hildalgo scribe, John Fusco, has been hired to write the script for the upcoming live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
The film will focus on the origins of turtles Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael and their sensei and rat, Master Splinter.
Fusco has been practicing martial arts since he was 12 so how does he feel about combining his two passions, karate and movies?
“It is always exciting when you can come aboard a project that bridges the worlds of what you do with what you love,” he said.
The heroes in the half shell debuted 25 years ago in a comic book by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman. The edgy ambiance was quickly transformed into a kid friendly toy bonanza and hit cartoon series. It also spawned three live-action films and an animated version in 2007.

As the “Shell-ebration” of the 25th anniversary of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ends this week at Comic-Con in San Diego, Variety reports that producers Scott Mednick and Galen Walker have announced that John Fusco will be writing the latest live-action version of Tmnt.
Fusco has been practicing martial arts since age 12 and still studies kung-fu so he should have no problem dealing with the action elements of the film. Other martial arts scripts on his resume include The Forbidden Kingdom starring Jackie Chan and Jet Li as well as a remake of The Seven Samurai.
According to Fusco, “It’s always exciting when you can come aboard a project that bridges the world of what you do and what you love.”
Don’t start coming out of your shell just yet, the relaunch is still in the early stages of planning and does not yet have a studio or director attached to the project. »

The Mirage Group, who own the rights to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, has hired a screenwriter for a live-action reboot of the franchise. John Fusco (The Forbidden Kingdom) will write the script to launch a potential new film series in 2011.
According to Variety, Fusco has been practicing martial arts since he was 12, so he has a handle on the teenage and ninja parts of the story. Now he’ll just need to do a little research on mutant turtles, and he should have everything he needs to re-tell their origin story. Fusco being hired means the Mirage Group isn’t planning anything particularly dark or adult, but essentially an updated version with a similar tone and story. So much for reinvention.
No director or actors have been hired, and likely won’t be discussed until a script is completed.
The first live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie in 1990 made $135 million domestically. »

Last week Screen Rant reported on a possible new writer for the new live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie in the form of John Fusco (Young Guns). The semi-confirmation came when Tmnt fan site Ninja Pizza picked up on a report put up on (and quickly removed from) TMNT25.com that listed Fusco as the writer.
However, it has just recently been officially confirmed that Fusco will write the live-action Tmnt reboot, which is to be produced by Scott Mednick (300, Superman Returns) and Galen Walker (Tmnt).
Variety is reporting that Fusco has been brought on-board as the writer for the new Ninja Turtles film, which is hoped to relaunch the four crime-fighting turtles, Michelangelo, Leonardo, Donatello and Raphael once more (there was an “updated” 2007 CGI-animated movie and of course the three live-action films released in the ’90s). Although no director has been signed onto the project yet, casting for the »

The upcoming "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movie finally has a writer -- and it looks like the Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman characters will have no shortage of fight scenes in their next big-screen bow.
According to Variety, "Young Guns" and "The Forbidden Kingdom" scribe John Fusco will pen the screenplay for the new, live-action film based we first brought you news about last year. The article claims that, along with penning several fight-friendly films, Fusco has been "practicing martial arts since he was 12, and continues to study Shaolin kung-fu."
And along with bringing his martial arts savvy to the mix, it appears that Fusco will also be returning to the characters' comic book roots for the film, too.
Variety reports that the new writer will include elements of the comics in the project, which is planned as a complete origin-focused reboot to the property. This confirms much of our »

As you may know already, a live-action reboot of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" is in early developmental stages, and now the project has found its writer: John Fusco.
The film is apparently expected to be ready for release in 2011, and the story will likely focus on the origins of Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael.
According to Variety, Fusco is quite knowledgeable when it comes to martial arts. He also wrote last year's "The Forbidden Kingdom," which I personally hated. Some of his other credits also include "Hidalgo" and the upcoming "The Seven Samurai."
The turtles have already made several big-screen appearances. "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" debuted in 1990, and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze" followed in '91. "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III" opened in 1993.
Who out there thinks it's a smart idea to bring back the crime-fighting hero turtles? Sound off below. »

You may have heard recently that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will shortly be making their way back onto the big screen in a new live-action movie (if you haven’t then where have you been?). And now the color coded Turtle gang have found a writer!
John Fusco has been brought on board to pen the script for the new Turtles adventure, which is expected to be released some time in 2011.
Fusco’s previous writing credits include “Young Guns”, “The Forbidden Kingdom” and he has recently been working on the remake of the Kurosawa classic - “Seven Samurai”.
We recently learned that a casting call had gone out for martial arts experts to play the Foot - Shredder’s loyal ninja clan, meaning we can expect to see the shiny villain make another big screen appearance! I’m one of the few who thoroughly enjoyed the 1990 original movie, so »

Screenwriter John Fusco, whose credits include Young Guns and Thunderheart, has signed on to write the new live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles flick. Mirage Studios is producing the film, which is still looking for a director and studio. The characters, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael and their master Splinter, first appeared in a May 1984 comic-book before spawning a lucrative line of toys and cartoon series. Producers are hoping the film will launch a new franchise. The sewer-dwelling characters, who love eating pizza when not fighting villains, also hit the big screen in three films for New Line in the early 1990s that earned more than $323 million worldwide. An animated feature in 2007 helped reignite interest in the turtles, bringing in $95 million for Warner Bros. Fusco, who’s been practicing martial arts since he was 12, and continues to study Shaolin kung fu, most recently wrote last year's The Forbidden Kingdom, which starred Jackie Chan and Jet Li. »

John Fusco knows kung fu. No, really. According to this Variety article announcing the screenwriter’s hiring for the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” remake, the writer has been practicing kung fu since he was 12 years old. Which would make him ideal to write the Tmnt reboot. Sort of. Anyways, it’s not as if he hasn’t written a martial arts movie before, having scripted the Jet Li-Jackie Chan collaboration “Forbidden Kingdom” last year. Before that, he was mostly known as the guy behind the “Young Guns” movies. Fusco will have the task of bringing the adventures of Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael and their master Splinter back to the big screen. One can only assume that much pizza consumption and oddball “teen” behavior ensues. The turtles are supposed to be teenagers, after all. Then again, Fusco could make one of them an emo and have another one be into hip hop music. »
