“Earthy” is the word to describe director Sam Gold’s staging of “Hamlet,” which opened Thursday at the Public Theater. Literally, there are the huge mounds of dirt that Ophelia (Gayle Rankin) retrieves from two potted plants she finds in the theater lobby, and pours over the dead body of her father, Polonius (Peter Friedman) and from which she fashions her own premature grave. More figuratively earthy is the upstage restroom that most of the characters find themselves in need of at various moments in the drama, although only Polonius is actually seen taking a dump there. The production is so replete.

There wasn’t much competition for quality among web series when “High Maintenance” launched on Vimeo in 2012, but the show went beyond raising the bar to invent a whole new set of expectations. The self-distributed effort by couple Katja Blichfeld and Ben Sinclair provided a freewheeling mirror into the ironies and contradictions of modern New York, with a beautiful command of several tones that it juggled with ease. The appeal of this sprawling urban portrait, in which an amiable bearded weed dealer known only as The Guy (Sinclair) provided the only connective tissue, stemmed from the sense that anything and anyone could become a part of its ever-expanding universe.
Blichfeld, Sinclair and their army of close-knit collaborators developed a tapestry of small moments that spoke to a larger vision — a city that was funny, ridiculous, sweet and sometimes a little bit sad. Like the drug sold to new clientele in each episode,...

I wonder if Will Eno saw Jon Robin Baitz’s Other Desert Cities, in which a character memorably says that families are terrorized by their weakest member. In any case, in The Open House, drolly directed by Oliver Butler, Eno demonstrates the idea with a vengeance. For the first half of the intermission-less 75-minute play, a horrible man (Peter Friedman) sits in a wheelchair in the family room of his suburban house, abusing his aggressively pleasant wife (Carolyn McCormick), his wounded brother (Michael Countryman), and his mystified adult children (Hannah Bos and Danny McCarthy). They are almost completely resigned to his blitzkrieg of snark, but what response could they offer to someone who says things like: “How many times do I have to ask you to never think about this family?” Any attempts they make to warm up their day together are mocked and dropped; even tiny insubordinations are quashed.

For quite some time I've wanted to start a regular queer-themed column on Indiewire. The precursor to this idea -- at least in large part -- was written at last year's Sundance Film Festival. It was basically a personal essay reflecting on David Weissman's intensely affective documentary "We Were Here" (which had premiered at the festival) in relation to my own experiences with HIV/AIDS and the media. As that essay detailed, I come from a generation of queer men that largely found out about HIV/AIDS through the mainstream media. As a result, I had by my late teens developed a problematic, unnecessary fear of the virus (and a drastic lack of real knowledge regarding it) perpetuated by these largely ignorant media representations. But then I found my way to Gregg Araki's "The Living End," Peter Friedman and Tom Joslin's "Silverlake Life: The View From Here,...
