The death of film-maker Morgan Spurlock leaves behind a documentary that pointed fingers at McDonalds with them later pointing at him as well

When a person shuffles off their mortal coil, they count themselves lucky to have some quantifiable or tangible expression of their legacy – an accomplishment more expansively influential than raising a single child or creating a body of work. In the case of documentarian Morgan Spurlock, who died this week from cancer-related health complications, it would not be exaggeration to claim that he singlehandedly killed the super-sized meal at McDonald’s.

“Weekend Update” hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che had plenty of jokes on last night’s “Saturday Night Live,” but the highlight came when they dug into Donald Trump’s $60 “God Bless the USA” Bibles.
Jost joked that the special edition book, which has a cut of sales going to the former president’s reelection campaign, is a bit different than your typical Christian Standard version. Trump’s Bible ends with “Jesus’ disciples storming Jerusalem to overturn the results of the crucifixion,” he said.
“Donald Trump has partnered with country music star Lee Greenwood to sell a $60 special edition of the Bible that also includes the Constitution, the lyrics to Greenwood’s ‘God Bless the USA’ and I assume God’s letter of resignation,” Jost joked, introducing the segment.
“This Bible is mostly the same,” he went on, “but Trump’s version ends with Jesus’ disciples storming Jerusalem to overturn the results of the crucifixion.

Colin Jost and Michael Che took shots at Donald Trump and Ronna McDaniel on Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update.”
The weekly segment started off with Jost taking several jabs at Trump for selling a Bible in partnership with country star Lee Greenwood with a price tag of $60. Jost said the special edition of the Bible “that also includes, the Constitution, the lyrics to Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” and I assume God’s letter of resignation.”
“This Bible is mostly the same, but Trump’s version ends with Jesus’ disciples storming Jerusalem to overturn the results of the crucifixion,” Jost joked.
Jost then cut to a clip of Trump alleging he has “many” Bibles at home, with the comedian adding, “I actually believe he has many Bibles. I’m sure he has been sent thousands of Bibles with a note saying, ‘Please read this.'”

From high jinks on YouTube to the high-brow slate of A24, Danny and Michael Philippou’s origin story is about as 2023 as it gets.
The twin Australian brothers began making homemade horror movies at the age of nine, and in 2013, they took things a step further by creating their YouTube channel, RackaRacka, which now sports nearly 7 million subscribers. The Philippous’ videos featured the usual antics of those who grew up on WWE, Jackass and genre movies, but they always contained a number of flourishes that pointed to the brothers’ greater aspirations as filmmakers.
Eventually, the brothers Philippou were inspired by their friend Daley Pearson’s short film about possession as a means to get high, and out of that, Talk to Me was born. Having worked on local Australian movie sets such as The Babadook (2014), the twins made use of their connections at Causeway Films and approached founders Kristina Ceyton and Samantha Jennings.

There have been quite a few horror movies of late that center around influencers and YouTubers, and, with some exceptions, they mostly suck. Maybe it’s because the protagonist is always yelling in that trademark “YouTube” voice. Maybe it’s that the found footage oeuvre could use a serious overhaul. Or maybe it comes down to the filmmakers not really understanding YouTubers. So what happens when those creators take a crack at the genre? If you’re Danny and Michael Philippou, you make the scariest movie of the year.

Stephen King's 1986 novel "It," for its overwhelming length and chronological sprawl, centers on a very simple and basic horror premise: clowns are terrifying. Perhaps there was a time in his planet's history when pale-faced, blue-haired ghouls with painted-on smiles and gin blossom encrusted noses were considered charming and delightful, but anyone who recalls that time died over a century ago. In 2022, many might readily agree that clumsy, "comedic" traditional circus buffoons are now merely greasy, manic, and threatening.
The monster in King's novel was an impossibly ancient shape-shifting Lovecraftian space deity that fed on human fear, with the ability to read human minds and manifest what they were most afraid of. Perhaps instinctually, the universal fear shape that this creature elected to take was that of a clown. It gave itself the name of Pennywise, and would hibernate in the sewers under Derry, Me, awakening every 27 years to frighten and eat children.

When one delves into the mythology of Stephen King's epically long 1986 novel "It," you might find a massively complicated Theogony of deities that link into numerous ancient creation myths. According to King's novel, the titular creature, most commonly known as Pennywise the Dancing Clown, was originally born of the enormous, ineffable void that surrounds the outer edges of the known cosmos. The novel refers to this void at the Macroverse, although in King's "Dark Tower" novels, the same void is called the Todash Darkness. A rogue meteor somehow picked up the creature and it traveled to planet Earth while it was still forming and humans hadn't evolved yet. For millions of years, It slumbered, eventually emerging in Ad 1715 to begin feeding on the local citizens. It's implied that It is billions of years old, and It can be a clown or a spider or whatever you're most afraid of.

There are plenty of movies with McDonald's tie-ins, from the very direct product placement of Mac and Me (pictured below) to all the family films promoted through Happy Meals toys. The new adaptation of Stephen King's It is not one of these movies. Not only is it an R-rated horror movie that doesn't fit the fast food chain's general demographics, but the specific fact that the movie involves a killer clown and the restaurant brand has a clown -- Ronald McDonald -- for a mascot would obviously send some confusing messages to customers. Yet the clown connection is precisely why a competing fast food company is upset. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Burger King's Russia division is seeking to have the movie formally banned from the...

Odell Beckham Jr. is trying to make a young fan’s wish come true.
The New York Giants star responded on Twitter to pleas to meet with Jayro Ponce, a 9-year-old boy battling cancer who names Beckham Jr. as his favorite football player.
“Jayro is a fighter, hero, and loved by many!” radio host Tommy Joe of The Hacker Morning Show wrote on Facebook Monday. “As we all know he is battling cancer…With the power of God,Miracles, Radio, and Social Media I think we can make this little guy smile at this point in his life. His dream...

Some movies are as refreshing as a crisp Sprite on a summer's day. Some movies are as satisfying as Tgi Friday's $10 Endless App special. And some are as in your face as Google Glass when it comes to product placement. Here are 16 movies that really wanted you to buy something.1. McDonalds in Mac and MeLet’s start with what is perhaps the most shameless product placement in history: The dance-off in the cheesy 1988 flick Mac and Me. It’s not enough for Eric to just take his new alien friend down to the local McDonald’s. No, they also have to throw in a Ronald McDonald cameo and a giant choreographed dance sequence, too. 2. Apple iPods in Blade: TrinityEveryone remembers how awesome first-generation iPods were when they came onto the market. But the third chapter of the Blade series — which features the devices as well as an iTunes...

Every once in a blue moon, Hollywood dishes up a comeback story so amazing it seems like something out of a … well, a movie.
After succeeding as a child actor in classics like "Bad News Bears," Jackie Earle Haley couldn't faltered in the transition to adult roles, and wallowed in obscurity in Texas for a good decade-and-a-half. In 2006, he was plucked out of actor purgatory for "All The King's Men" and an Oscar-nominated turn in "Little Children," and the rest is history.
Now he's hit the pinnacle, working with the grand puba of directors, Steven Spielberg, in the bearded one's upcoming biopic "Lincoln."
According to Deadline, Haley will portray Alexander Stephens opposite Daniel Day Lewis as President Stovepipe Hat.
Besides looking a great deal like Stephens, the Vice President of the Confederacy during the Civil War, the role presents another opportunity for Haley to sink his teeth into the dark side of human nature.

In an effort to reassess the classic, underrated Mac And Me, Ryan compares its merits with some the most critically lauded movies of all time
Back in April, we proved once and for all that Mac And Me, a film long held in contempt by mainstream critics, is actually a clever, nuanced piece of 80s cinema. On the surface a mere E.T. clone, a shameless attempt to make a quick barrowful of cash from unwary moviegoers, Mac And Me is, in fact, rich with multiple layers of meaning.
The film can be read alternately as a critique on the American dream, the likes of which hasn't been attempted since Hunter S Thompson wrote Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas back in the 70s, or a maverick work of postmodern surrealism.
It's an absolute travesty, I'd argue, that critics continue to pour scorn on director Stewart Raffill's 1988 masterwork. It's been...

When I met Morgan Spurlock for an interview to discuss his latest film, it certainly happened in a Hyatt. Pom Wonderful bottles were placed neatly on the table, and the director himself was sporting some Merells. Most importantly, Spurlock was wearing The Suit, as seen in the film. Soon to be seen in his visual appearances, it subjects him to the same literal branding of a Nascar vehicle.
Previously, Morgan Spurlock went up against the McDonald’s menu for his smash documentary, Super Size Me. His newest challenge, with his funding process shown step-by-step in his new film, is product placement. Sponsored 100% by other companies, The Greatest Movie Ever Sold shows how aggressively blatant advertising has infiltrated the content of popular media, while giving moviegoers a rare look into the science behind such a billion dollar business.

The Monster's Ball star thinks this is an awful period for film. But are we really worse off than, say, the Police Academy years?
Billy Bob Thornton knows a thing or two about quality. He's risen to the top of his profession with standout turns in films like Monster's Ball, The Man Who Wasn't There and Bad Santa. At the same time, he's also managed to bumble into dimwitted Shia Labeouf thrillers (Eagle Eye), arthritic comedies (Mr Woodcock) and aimless dramas about the air traffic control industry (Pushing Tin). So when Billy Bob Thornton speaks about quality, you know he's had plenty of experience on both sides.
That's why, when he told the Telegraph last week Hollywood is currently producing the worst movies ever made, people listened. According to Thornton, these films are "geared toward the video game-playing generation. And these video games – which I'm on my son about constantly...
