The Four Weddings and a Funeral screenplay writer didn’t want actor Hugh Grant in the starring role of the film because he was too handsome.
Writer Richard Curtis actively campaigned against Grant in the lead role of Charles, a floppy-haired young professional whose fear of commitment turns to love for a certain wedding guest. Curtis had nothing against Grant, but he didn’t envision him as Charles who has a history of being a serial dater.
“I was worried about it. When Hugh did first come in, I did think he was too handsome. I thought people would not believe the fact he was in trouble with girls because he so clearly wouldn’t be. So that’s why he pushed the sort of doubtfulness and lack of confidence,” he told Daily Mail.

Love Actually is back on our TV screens for Christmas, and it’s reminded us of something we learned about the film back in 2015.
Director Richard Curtis’ wife – scriptwriter, author and broadcaster Emma Freud – live-tweeted a midnight screening of the film she was watching with her family.
By doing so, she revealed a lot of detail about the film that viewers probably won’t have known before.
One of those revelations was what happens to Karen and Harry, played by Emma Thompson and the late Alan Rickman, after the film ended.
In the film, the audience can only watch on as Harry, who has two children with his wife Karen, engages in a flirtation with his secretary Mia (Heike Makatsch), and later decides to buy her a gold necklace for Christmas.
Karen accidentally discovers the necklace and thinks it’s for her, only to realise the heartbreaking truth when he...

The manager of London’ Notting Hill Bookshop has a ready supply of Kleenex because so many of the patrons walk in and break into tears.
From 1979-2011, the store was known as the Travel Bookshop. It became famous in “Notting Hill,” the hit romantic comedy celebrating its 20th anniversary on May 28. Julia Roberts stars as Anna Scott, the world’s biggest movie star, and Hugh Grant as Will Thacker, the divorced owner of the bookshop, who meet cute and fall in love.
The actual store was too narrow and small to film there, said manager Olga Lewkowska, so a set was built around the corner from the store, which is located at 4 Blenheim Crescent. The original owner sold the store in 2011 because its focus was too narrow to sustain. The bookshop does still have a travel section but basically features gift books, limited editions or reprints of first editions.

In the 14 years since British rom-com classic Love Actually was released, a majority of the film’s fans have found nothing weird in the behavior of lovesick Mark (Andrew Lincoln), who’s infatuated with the new wife (Keira Knightley) of his best friend (Chiwetel Ejiofor). In one of the movie’s (often-parodied) touchstone scenes, Mark declares his unrequited love by holding large handwritten cards.
In an EW online poll last year, 66 percent of voters said that Mark was a lovestruck sap rather than a stalker creep. That’s not how Lincoln himself saw it. “In one of the most romantic movies of all time,...

"Love Actually" has the distinction of being both one of our favorite rom-coms and one of our favorite holiday movies, though for every smile-inducing, heartwarming plotline, there are a few bummers, too. One of those centered around Emma Thompson's character, Karen, who realized that her husband, Harry (Alan Rickman), was cheating on her with his hot new assistant. But what happened to Karen and Harry after the credits rolled?
Now, fans have some clarity about the ambiguous fate of the fictional married couple, who appeared to still be together at the film's end, despite Karen's devastating discovery. Emma Freud, who served as the flick's script editor (and is also married to its director, Richard Curtis), live-tweeted a screening of "Love Actually" earlier this week, and revealed a bunch of behind-the-scenes info about the movie, including the state of Karen and Harry's union.

Amid all of the intertwining storylines throughout Richard Curtis' Love Actually, one of the stories that didn't really get the warm and fuzzy closure treatment of all the others is that of Richard and Karen. After all of these years of the definitive truth eluding audiences, writer/director Curtis has finally revealed the fate of the embattled couple. Spoiler alert: the couple winds up staying together, but it's not pretty. Curtis, who was watching the film at a midnight screening this weekend, hadn't seen the film since its 2003 premiere. But the distance of time hasn't dimmed his memory of the decisions he made involving his revolving door of characters . especially Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson's dramatically charged married couple. THR found the scoop on their fate, as it was revealed in a tweet from Curtis' partner, Emma Freud, as follows: @JPerlstrom they stay together but home isn't...

The Sex and the City actress is an early confirmation for the series, after being approached by broadcaster Emma Freud.
Appearing on The Graham Norton Show, she said: "It was quite a strange thing. It was the first time I'd been offered something like that on Twitter. I tweet all the time and Emma Freud tweeted me and asked me to do the Bake Off.
"She threw down the gauntlet and I said, 'Yes'. I'll just take a lot of wine and have fun!"
When reminded that judge Paul Hollywood is a fellow Liverpudlian, she replied: "I can make Scouse with him."
Meanwhile, the actress also spoke about new TV series Sensitive Skin, which is currently airing on Sky Arts.

London, April 13: 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' writer Richard Curtis has hinted that he may soon be walking the aisle with his long-time partner Emma Freud.
The 57-year-old said on Radio 4's The Reunion that he wrote the rom-com as an attempt to explain to his mom why he wasn't getting married, Daily Express reported.
He further explained that he had to say it didn't work and that his mom was unhappy with the situation for the next 15 years, adding that now he might.

Alistair McGowan has been named Star Baker in the final episode of The Great Sport Relief Bake Off.
The comedian and impressionist beat Doon Mackichan, Helen Skelton and Rochelle Humes to win the coveted apron today (January 16).
He managed to win over Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood with his pizza in the signature bake round, his second-placed Eccles cakes in the technical challenge, and his Hawkeye Victoria sponge in the showstopper part of the competition.
"Alistair won because he triumphed with his sponge today," Berry explained. "It was absolutely delicious. He should be proud."
Humes - who impressed with her pizza and showstopper but had a disaster in the technical challenge after mixing up salt and sugar - said she was "really proud" to get through the competition with no tears, commenting: "I had a really good time."

Ooh, we could murder a doughnut. Wednesday's episode of The Great Sport Relief Bake Off was the closest yet, as Jamelia, Michael Ball, Victoria Pendleton and Emma Freud fought valiantly for the crown (well, apron). It was anyone's game. Everyone had a comedy disaster; everyone had a triumph. And we obviously loved it. But what were our favourite bits? Read on to find out...
The Signature Bake - Traybakes
First off, we have to mention how much we loved Victoria's prim and proper school prefect look and her superb facial expressions - especially when she whipped cream onto herself. But largely, everyone's traybakes seemed to start off well (however disconcerting it was learning that Michael had played Sweeney Todd and thinking through the implications of that). It was also a joy to see Mary getting excited at the mention of cointreau in Victoria's blondies. (That and a hot toddy traybake from Michael?...

Emma Freud was crowned Star Baker in tonight's episode of The Great Sport Relief Bake Off.
In the closest competition of the series yet, Freud just edged past Olympian Victoria Pendleton to win the much-coveted Bake Off apron.
Bacon brownies & burnt carpet: Sport Relief Bake Off - our best bits
She impressed judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood with her bacon and bourbon brownies, iced ring doughnuts and tennis-themed showstopper cake.
"It really was a difficult decision," Berry explained. "I'd say Victoria and Emma were sort of neck and neck, but gosh, her almond cake tasted good."
Meanwhile, Hollywood said Freud deserved victory because of her passion, flavour, creativity and fun.
Freud joked that she would wear her apron for the rest of her life, while Pendleton was less happy, joking: "I'm never going to bake again."
However, the other two contestants - Jamelia and Michael Ball - claimed that...

The Great Sport Relief Bake Off is back with four brand new celebrities tonight.
Entering the famous tent in an attempt to impress with their baking skills this evening are Emma Freud, Michael Ball, Victoria Pendleton and Jamelia.
Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry will be back to judge the contestants' offerings, but will tonight be joined by Omid Djalili as a guest host.
In an attempt to raise money for Sport Relief, the four famous faces will be challenged to make a variety of tasty treats.
The competition will begin when they are tasked with whipping up traybakes and doughnuts.
However, the proof really will be in the pudding when the showstopper round comes along and the celebrities are asked to create a layer cake representing their sporting hero.
The competition reportedly gets too much for some, and there are expected to be some tears before the evening is out.

In Curtis's films, friends and family trump romantic relationships – which are too often founded on superficial attraction
• About Time: first-look review
• Feature: why can't women time travel?
• Watch the About Time trailer
It's right there in the trailer. The key moment in Richard Curtis's new romantic comedy, the pledge of mutual devotion that's supposed to have us reaching for our hankies, comes when Bill Nighy says, "My son," and Domhnall Gleeson whispers back: "My dad." Yes, the posters may concentrate on Gleeson and Rachel McAdams, rather than Gleeson and Nighy, but by the end of About Time it's clear that the young sweethearts' flirty shenanigans are incidental to the main event. What matters to Curtis is just a father, standing in front of a son, and asking him to love him.
We shouldn't be too surprised. One curious aspect of Curtis's filmography is that while he's more or less synonymous with romantic comedy,...

Al Pacino was safely ensconced on the stage of the London Palladium when interviewer Emma Freud promised us a night of unrivalled intimacy in his first ever solo show in England. "By the end of the evening, I'm hoping you can call me Mrs Pacino," said Freud, who was partnered with film-maker Richard Curtis at the time of writing.
Her first question was rhetorical. "Would it be all right to say I want to lick your face?"
Pacino – black shirt, black tie, black suit, two black rings, black goatee – took it in his stride. "You'll get a lot of cream out," he said. Already the evening was turning into a Pacino lustathon.
"I love you," screamed a woman in the audience.
"Bullshit!" screams a man.

Comic Relief is celebrating the 25th birthday of TV fundraising extravaganza Red Nose Day today (February 5).
Richard Curtis, the founder of Comic Relief, Emma Freud, Lenny Henry and celebrity supporters Ben Miller, Claudia Winkleman, David Baddiel, Dermot O'Leary, Frank Skinner, Helen Skelton, Jimmy Carr, Kate Thornton and Sanjeev Bhaskar gathered to mark the occasion.

Red Nose Day was launched in 1988 and has helped raise money for people living in Africa, the UK and the world's poorest countries.
"From day one the money so generously donated by the UK public has been hard at work helping to create a just world free from poverty," said Curtis.
"These days Africa is a vastly different continent to the one I visited all those years ago. Six of the world's fastest-growing economies are in now in Africa. And major progress has been made in fighting diseases, increasing literacy rates and addressing injustice.

David Cassidy was everything to Emma Freud when she was 13. So what happened 20 years later when she met him and asked him to her Christmas party?
I have only ever held one proper Christmas party. It was 1998 and I was living in Notting Hill with my boyfriend and two children. As it was our last year in the house (one bedroom, two kids, son slept in the bathroom as nowhere else to go, time to move), we decided to have a final hoorah that December.
We'd asked one of the hot-dog stalls on Portobello Road to park outside the house to supply the catering (hot dogs, ver ver Christmassy) and we'd done the whole mulled wine, Christmas tree, crisps, dodgy music thing. We'd also optimistically rented a Santa outfit in the hope we could persuade someone to dress up and give out sweets to the dozen or so kids who were coming.
