Bob Fosse’s Dancin’ is the first casualty of the Tony Awards.
The revival of the musical revue, which opened on Broadway on March 23, announced Tuesday evening that it would play its final performance at the Music Box Theatre on May 14. The closing notice comes after the show did not receive any Tony Award nominations Tuesday morning and has seen waning box office numbers.
Dancin’ is directed by Wayne Cilento, one of the stars of the original Broadway production, and produced in cooperation with Nicole Fosse, daughter of the legendary choreographer. The cast features more than 20 dancers, who are expanding on classic Fosse numbers, such as Mr. Bojangles and Sing Sing Sing, in the vein of the original 1978 revue.
The show recently saw a downturn box office. In the most recent week, which ended April 30, Dancin’ played to 48 percent capacity and grossed $386,970, below a typical running cost for a show of this size.

Bob Fosse’s Dancin’ will return to Broadway this spring, 41 years after the original hit production left the stage.
The musical revival will begin previews at The Music Box Theatre on Thursday, March 2, 2023, with opening night set for Sunday, March 19. Producer Joey Parnes made the announcement today.
The production will be directed by Tony Award winner Wayne Cilento, a cast member of the original Broadway production, and produced in cooperation with Nicole Fosse.
The new staging, producers say, will be “utterly reimagined for the 21st century.” The revival, they said in the announcement, “brims with a level of warmth, emotion, and color seldom seen in modern interpretations of Fosse’s influential style and features some of his most inventive and rarely performed choreography.”
The cast will include Yeman Brown, Peter John Chursin, Dylis Croman, Jovan Dansberry, Karli Dinardo , Tony d’Alelio, Aydin Eyikan, Manuel Herrera, Gabriel Hyman, Kolton Krouse, Mattie Love,...

Bob Fosse’s Dancin’, the hit musical revue originally directed and choreographed by the legendary Fosse that ran on Broadway from 1978 to 1982, is planning a return: Producer Joey Parnes announced today that he’ll bring a revival, directed by Wayne Cilento, to Broadway in the 2022-23 season.
“Bob Fosse created the original production as a tribute to dance, but we are approaching this production as a celebration of Bob himself – both the person and the artist,” said Cilento, who was featured in the original company. “We plan on delivering a Dancin’ that is every bit as eclectic and uplifting as the original, full of all its inherent edginess, but is also relevant to our current era.
“Every creative decision will be made through that lens to meet this moment,” Cilento continued, “from our casting of a new generation of principal dancers that reflects the vibrancy of our city to our...

The Producers Guild of America has revealed its nominees in the motion picture and television categories for its 31st Annual Producers Guild Awards; nominees include recent Golden Globe winners “1917,” “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” “Missing Link,” “Succession,” “Fleabag” and “Chernobyl.”
The PGA, which has about 8,200 members, has matched the Oscar for best picture in 21 of its 30 years, including “The Green Book” last year and “The Shape of Water” in 2018.
The PGA uses a preferential balloting system that’s similar to that employed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The PGA and AMPAS both expanded their voting for the top film to 10 nominees in 2009. About three-quarters of the PGA’s Zanuck nominees wind up as Oscar best picture nominees.
On the TV side, among all of the drama and comedy nominees, only “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (last year’s comedy winner) is a repeat from last year.

“We’re making a true replica rather than a representation,” explains production designer Alex Digerlando about his Emmy-nominated work on “Fosse/Verdon.” The series about the relationship between showbiz legends Bob Fosse (Sam Rockwell) and Gwen Verdon (Michelle Williams) required Digerlando and his team to recreate everything from the couples opulent Manhattan penthouse to the iconic sets of some of Fosse’s most famous films. In our exclusive video interview (watch above), Digerlando calls his approach to the task “two pronged.” We have to get all the period details right to make sure that the environments that the characters inhabit feel appropriates, but then we also have to build these recreations of sets. to think about how these sets would have been created at the time.

Almost all of this year’s Emmy limited series nominees are based on true stories and set in real-life locations — the exception is HBO’s “Sharp Objects,” which is based on a novel. In striving for the most accurate, truthful experiences on screen, several projects shot in the exact sites where their dramatic events took place. That in turn helped inform the creativity both in front of and behind the camera.
With six weeks to go before shooting, “Escape at Dannemora” director Ben Stiller found himself in dire straits: It looked like the Clinton Correctional Facility where the daring titular escape took place was going to be off limits for Stiller and his crew. The director was at a loss as to how they were going to re-create the vast prison in Dannemora, N.Y., without massive visual effects that were out of budget for the Showtime show. But luckily,...

An inside look at the partnership between choreographer/director Bob Fosse and legendary dancer Gwen Verdon—two of the most influential artists of the 20th century—FX limited series Fosse/Verdon covers five decades of American history over the course of its eight episodes. Given the scope of the story at hand, the project was a significant artistic challenge for all those working behind the scenes—not least, costume designer Melissa Toth, who went to every conceivable length to bring authenticity to every costume seen on screen.
A first-time Emmy nominee who has worked mostly in features—most recently, on such critical hits as Ben Is Back and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri—Toth needed to know her two title characters inside out. Examining the sartorial identity of each, and the difference between their public and private personas, Toth also played a critical role in pulling off a number of recreations of Fosse’s productions,...

This story about “Fosse/Verdon” first appeared in the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
Sparked by remarkable performances by Sam Rockwell as dancer-choreographer-director Bob Fosse and Michelle Williams as dancer-choreographer Gwen Verdon, FX’s “Fosse/Verdon” danced its way to 17 Emmy nominations last month , the most for any limited series except “Chernobyl.” The eight-part series mixes their work with a portrait of the stormy marriage and volatile professional and personal relationship between a driven man who transformed the world of dance on stage and on screen, and the woman who served as a vital collaborator despite often not getting her due.
The show comes at a pivotal moment in our culture, and one that casts its central figures in an often harsh light. Fosse was a difficult, demanding man who did not always treat the women around him well — and we live in a time in which...

If “Russian Doll’s” Nadia (Natasha Lyonne) somehow met Gwen Verdon (Michelle Williams) from “Fosse/Verdon” in a bizarre time loop, you could almost imagine them bonding. The greatest of Broadway dancers might help the uptight Nadia loosen up a bit, and Nadia might give Gwen a good laugh about female empowerment in a future New York. The point being, dressing both of these strong-willed women was a costume designer’s dream for Jennifer Rogien (“Russian Doll”) and Melissa Toth (“Fosse/Verdon”).
In “Russian Doll,” created by Lyonne, Amy Poehler, and Leslye Headland, Nadia finds herself trapped in a 36th birthday/death loop, playing detective to solve the mystery of her “Groundhog Day” predicament. “She wears black,” Rogien said. “It suits Nadia, it suits the New Yorker in her, and it suits the detective in her. And it was described by Natasha as a detective caper, which was extremely insightful because she...

“In spite of all of the things that they went through together, in the end Bob Fosse died in Gwen Verdon‘s arms,” reveals Steven Levenson about the bond between the title characters of the FX limited series “Fosse/Verdon.” Levenson, a Tony Award winner for writing the book of the musical “Dear Evan Hansen,” is an executive producer of the series alongside Joel Fields, a recent Emmy winner for co-writing the final episode of “The Americans.” In our exclusive interview (watch the video above), the duo talks about bringing the “complicated” and “messy” love story of Fosse and Verdon to television.
The series, which concluded last night on FX, is based on the biography “Fosse” by Sam Wasson, but Levenson says that conversations with Fosse and Verdon’s daughter Nicole Fosse (who is also a co-executive producer for the series) led to putting Verdon’s name in the title. “It...

From the moment it was first announced, FX’s flashy new miniseries Fosse/Verdon — debuting Tuesday at 10/9c; I’ve seen five of the eight episodes — seemed to come with its own pre-written Emmy campaign. It has all the trappings of the kind of Hollywood biopic that usually rakes in awards: spot-on celebrity impersonations, copious amounts of drugs and booze, a time-spanning narrative that requires a heavy slathering of old-age makeup. But despite stellar performances from its two lead actors, it never really breaks out of that established biopic framework enough to tell a fresh and compelling story. It knows all the steps,...

FX's Fosse/Verdon is a timeless story of love and infidelity wrapped up in a big dance nerd biopic bow.
This review of Fosse/Verdon contains no spoilers.
The Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon of Fosse/Verdon know exactly what they want to see. Fosse, the legendary choreographer played with typical careful precision by Sam Rockwell, walks around his dancers, taking in every angle and occasionally muttering “that’s nice” as they execute a particular move the correct way - the only way.
His wife, equally legendary dancer/actress Gwen Verdon (Michelle Williams), lights up with girlish delight upon seeing a simple black vest wardrobe has uncovered for Liza Minelli in Fosse’s film 1972 film adaptation of Cabaret. What should be worn under it? “Nothing,” Gwen purs with utter clarity. A lifetime of experience married with preternatural talent has turned Gwen and Bob into the ultimate crowd whisperers. They...

Bob Fosse’s signature style as a director and choreographer was stripped-down and then askew, removing familiar excesses of movement or film language so that he might replace them with entirely new flourishes. Every chance he got, he traded cant and familiarity with an insinuating slinkiness, suggestive both of his vaudeville influences and of a creative mind unusually familiar with the language in which temptation expresses itself.
“Fosse/Verdon,” FX’s series about the lives of the artist and his collaborator and wife, the musical actress Gwen Verdon, depicts the pair’s process with a tactician’s clear understanding of how musicals, and choreography, work. The new FX miniseries Fosse/Verdon has all the makings for both awards success and theater geek nirvana: with executive producers from stage - Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda and Thomas Kail and Dear Evan Hansen's Steven Levenson - and screen - The Americans' Joel Fields - and starring Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams, the eight episodes begin airing April 9 and tell the story of Bob Fosse, one of the most acclaimed directors of all time, and his wife, Gwen Verdon, the terrific Tony Award-winning actress and dancer who often gets left out of the story.

The #MeToo era is just the right time to be doing an eight-episode series about the complicated/creative/tortured relationship between dancer-choreographer Bob Fosse and dancer/muse/wife Gwen Verdon, their daughter and the producers of FX’s Fosse/Verdon told TV critics Monday at TCA.
While the project was being developed, the “incredible explosion of the truth” that began the #MeToo movement suddenly made their project extremely timely, Ep Steven Levenson said.
“Our goal is to explore a relationship between these two in an authentic way,” Ep Joel Fields told TV critics. The eight-episode series stars Michelle Williams as Verdon and Sam Rockwell as Fosse.
Fosse and Verdon’s daughter, Nicole Fosse, who is a co-ep on the project, said it was “important to tell the truth” and trust viewers would understand the project held a mirror to what was acceptable in the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s.

In the upcoming FX limited series “Fosse/Verdon,” the second name is just as important as the first. The producers behind “Fosse/Verdon” are not concerned that the still-living subjects of their upcoming FX limited series will be so upset over their depiction they will respond with a lawsuit, as Oliva de Havilland did after “Feud: Bette and Joan.”
“We’re incredibly careful when we talk about living people and it’s not our desire to impugn anyone,” executive producer Steven Levenson said at the FX Television Critics Assn. press tour panel for the new limited series Monday.
“Fosse/Verdon” explores the personal and professional partnership between Bob Fosse (played by Sam Rockwell) and Gwen Verdon (played by Michelle Williams), in part during the pivotal time in the 1970s when they worked with actresses such as Liza Minnelli and Shirley MacLaine. While Nicole Fosse serves as a creative consultant and co-executive producer on the project, Minnelli and MacLaine are not involved, nor have they even seen any of the footage yet.

FX's limited series Fosse/Verdon was in the early stages of development when a series of #MeToo revelations about powerful Hollywood figures hit.
The show's creative team then realized that rather than elide or work around some of the more questionable aspects of Bob Fosse's behavior, they should lean into it.
"It's an ongoing conversation. It's a conversation that never ends," said Nicole Fosse, the daughter of Fosse and Gwen Verdon and a consultant on the series. " So no matter what has happened that we've found out already, no matter what we've ...

For someone who has done a fair share of jazz hands in my youth as a dance student, the most exciting moment of the slog that was the 76th edition of the Golden Globes wasn’t during the ceremony. It was the teaser trailer for FX’s limited series“Fosse/Verdon,” with Academy Award winner Sam Rockwell as choreographer and filmmaker Bob Fosse and Michelle Williams as his wife, muse and Broadway sensation Gwen Verdon. Lin-Manuel Miranda is an executive producer. Also involved is the couple’s daughter, Nicole Fosse, who is a co-executive producer and oversaw the project, including the use of her father’s original choreography.
If you have ever seen 1979’s nine-time Oscar nominated “All That Jazz,” the autobiographical film directed by Fosse and starring Roy Scheider, the clip above has a similar feel of sophistication, sensuality and snap — as it should. I would never guess that Rockwell,...

“What made you start dancing?”
Director Richard Attenborough took on a great challenge in his 1985 adaptation of the hit Broadway musical A Chorus Line, now having its day on Blu-Ray from 20th Century Fox. While this adaptation of the film certainly has its problems, there is still a great deal to recommend with it.
The central question of A Chorus Line leads its cast into personal and professional revelations about show business, about life in New York, and about both the simplest and most complex problems of surviving on your own terms. The film begins with the selection of sixteen dancers – eight men and eight women – to be whittled down to a final eight that will join a major Broadway production as the chorus line. We’re introduced to our main characters in an extended opening sequence as each dancer mentally prays to be one of the chosen few. The...
