This month, FX aired something insane and magic and impossible to describe. It came courtesy of a show you are likely not watching – unless you’re a diehard fan of Denis Leary and/or single-camera comedies about rock music. It stars an artist whose contributions to film, television and theater are prolific and vast, who performs an homage to Broadway’s most game-changing musical of the last several decades.

Hollywood comedy films tend to follow a formula that is easy to follow. Get a few big stars, find a story that more basic the better then stick in some gross out comedy or romance then shake it all together and get a number one movie out of it. They appear to take little thought but they do one thing that is important, know their viewers. We’re the Millers is a film a lot like that, but while stumbling through normalcy actually trips up on something that makes it quite sweet, and that is family values.

The comedian and film star tries to explain to Allen, with whom he has shared a long correspondence, why he hasn't written to him for so long
22 March 1967
In 1961, the comedians Groucho Marx and Woody Allen met for the first time and embarked on a friendship that would last 16 years. Marx – the elder of the pair by 45 years – reminded Allen of "a Jewish uncle in my family, a wisecracking Jewish uncle with a sarcastic wit", while Allen was, according to Marx in 1976, "the most important comic talent around". In March 1967, following a lengthy break in their correspondence that Allen found infuriating, Marx finally wrote him a letter. Despite efforts to determine its meaning, the "Ww" that Marx uses to address Allen remains a mystery.
Dear Ww:
Goodie Ace told some unemployed friend of mine that you were disappointed or annoyed or happy or drunk that I hadn't answered the letter...

Chicago – There was a point in “We’re the Millers” when the story fell off the table like a Slinky from a mountaintop. It’s as if other writers took over from a far superior dark comedy, and injected “heart” and middle age “stripping.” This all adds up to a difficult 110 minutes of lost life time.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
What began with decent laughs and with Jason Sudeikis rattling off fast-talk dialogue like he was in a demented Howard Hawks movie, turns into a domestic comedy of the stupidest order, with an idiot plot that defies logic, gravity and star power. Jennifer Aniston does the obligatory last “rebellious” role as a stripper who never takes her clothes off, before she is destined for mommy roles or another sitcom, playing a mommy. The rest of the embarrassed cast – with attention particularly paid to Ed Helms and Luis Guzmán – trot out the lame situations...

We’re The Millers
Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber
Written by Bob Fisher, Steve Faber, Sean Anders, and John Morris
USA, 2013
We’re The Millers is a mighty schizophrenic movie, sometimes shuffling from plot point to plot point as if you can literally see a committee of studio executives hovering next to the actors, offering notes about how likable the characters should be or which touchstones of popular culture should be referenced. And then, sometimes, almost by the sheer will and force of the cast, there are laughs to be had in what is an arguably ridiculous premise. In the end, We’re The Millers is just so-so, a fitfully funny patchwork comedy that relies too much on paying homage to far better pieces of modern popular culture.
Jason Sudeikis is Dave, a shiftless small-time pot dealer in Denver who finds himself at the end of his rope when he...

Nadya "Octomom" Suleman and her octuplets were looking forward to performing at a charity concert for "The Ruth Moore Lausd Christmas Party and Giveaway" on Dec. 17 in Los Angeles. But now the offer has been withdrawn, with conflicting reasons as to why.
"They canceled them," Nadya's spokesperson, who confirmed that Nadya and her children had been booked through an organization called the School Tour, told The Huffington Post. "They said it's because the amount of press coverage and that they were worried too many kids would show up!"
However, an explanation from representatives of the organization, including executive director Michelle Sanders, suggests the situation is more complicated.
"At this time there are no plans for Octomom's 'Roctuplets' singing group to appear at the 47th Annual Ruth Moore Christmas Party for underprivileged children in Los Angeles on December 17,” Bob Fisher, the organization's public relations counsel told The Huffington Post. "There was...

With his latest directing job, the remake of About Last Night, now chuntering through the post-production process, Steve Pink is considering his future options. He’s still developing the Bad Santa sequel but now Relativity Media has given the go-ahead for another comedy, Contractors.Set in the swanky holiday home district of the Hamptons, the film will see two underachieving builders hired to work on a dream house for a millionaire and his girlfriend. There’s just one little wrinkle: the woman used to date one of the builders, and there may yet still be a flicker of feelings there. It could easily turn into a dodgy, Adam Sandler-level yuck fest, but Pink’s presence gives us a little more hope. Relativity bought the script as a spec from Bob Fisher and David Hemingson back in 2007. But it has lingered in development limbo ever since, despite the attachment of Old Dogs director Walt Becker.

USA Network has cast the four leads in the Denis Leary comedy pilot Sirens: Michael Mosley (Pan Am, Scrubs), Kevin Daniels (Modern Family), Kevin Bigley and Jessica McNamee. Co-created by Leary and Bob Fisher, Sirens follows three of Chicago’s best EMTs — Johnny (Mosley), Hank (Daniels) and Brian (Bigley) — whose sometimes self-loathing, other times narcissistic, and always downright self-destructive personalities make them unqualified for sustaining relationships, friendships and most occupations. They are, however, uniquely qualified for saving anyone unlucky enough to wind up in their ambulance. Johnny is a good-looking, sports-loving, Chicago Emt working with his best friend Hank. Brian is a wide-eyed and excitable new Emt who still lives with his parents. McNamee will play the female lead, Theresa, a smart female cop with the Chicago Pd who still loves her ex Johnny, but ultimately had to move on when he wouldn’t commit. The pilot, produced by Fox TV Studios,...

Without Groucho Marx, there would have been no Woody Allen. Groucho (and the rest of the Marx Brothers) pioneered the modern New York Jewish brand of humor that, after World War II, became one of the defining sensibilities of American comedy. In the '60s, that legacy was taken up by Allen, who frequently referenced the Marx Brothers both implicitly and explicitly in his films. Allen's most famous movie, "Annie Hall," even name-checks Groucho in the opening monologue of the film.
But for a time, Woody and Groucho were not on good terms. After striking a friendship in 1961, there was radio silence between the two for several years after Groucho failed to respond to a letter. In 1967, word got back to Groucho that the Woody was hurt by the lack of communication, and Groucho sent him an apology letter that only he could have penned.
The letter read in part:...

Chicago – Did Universal know that Meryl Streep was going to win her third Oscar for “The Iron Lady”? Someone should investigate because two of her most acclaimed performances hit Blu-ray this week as a part of Universal’s 100th Anniversary Collector’s Series — “Out of Africa” and “The Deer Hunter.” With a combined twelve Oscars among the two, these are two of the most powerful films in the Universal library and great choices for the Collector’s Series upgrade. Meanwhile, Universal continues to supply this catalog, released “Charade,” “My Man Godfrey,” and “Sullivan’s Travels” under the same banner on DVD-only.
“The Deer Hunter” and “Out of Africa” both won Best Picture but Streep actually didn’t take home the acting Oscar for either (losing to other legends, Maggie Smith and Geraldine Page). Nonetheless, the films are wonderful examples of the range of the best actress of all time. And...

The voice of Rapunzel in Tangled just scored a pilot gig at ABC.
The network just gave a big heck yes to a new comedy that will star Mandy Moore as a newlywed who “gets the opportunity of a lifetime to run a hip, new restaurant” in her hometown. At the same time, this new “opportunity” brings her closer to her “needy and high maintenance family.” Hilarity ensues! The comedy’s from Bob Fisher and Stacy Traub.

ABC has given a pilot order to a single-camera comedy starring Mandy Moore and set to be directed by "Real Steel" helmer Shawn Levy. The untitled comedy was originally picked up in October with a put pilot commitment and Bob Fisher and Stacy Traub scripting. According to Deadline.com, the 20th Century Fox TV comedy will feature Moore and a yet-to-be-cast actor as newlyweds who return to her hometown to run a new restaurant, a move that brings them all too close to her predictably wacky family. Levy, who is also directing Fox's "Little Brother" this pilot season, will...

Mandy Moore Coming Back to TV in Us And Them
Actress and singer Mandy Moore is making her way back to TV in a new sitcom for ABC called Us and Them. Moore has done plenty of guest starring roles (the most recent of which was on fellow ABC series, Grey’s Anatomy), but this is her first time in a major starring role. Us and Them is a single-camera family comedy about the conflicts between the family you grow up with and the family you make as an adult. I can definitely see the humor in the premise (from my own personal experience), but I can also see many opportunities for a show like this to take a walk on a more serious side.
Us and Them is told through the perspective of newlyweds Annie (Moore) and Ben. ABC has given the series a pilot commitment with Marty Adelstein...

Ray Richmond is contributing to Deadline's coverage of TCA. With their seriocomic firefighter drama Rescue Me ending its run on FX in September, series co-creators Denis Leary and Peter Tolan are embarking on another series project together. "I guess I can say right now that Mr. Leary and I are tomorrow starting writing on our next show, a half-hour for him to star in," Tolan told Deadline today after the TCA panel on the final season of Rescue Me. He described it as "strictly a comedy, like nothing we've done before. It's not a traditional comedy, probably for cable. We're doing it totally on spec and taking it out." Before Rescue Me, Leary and Tolan co-created the underrated ABC cop comedy The Job, which also starred Leary. Tolan said that after 10 years of working together, first on The Job and then on Rescue Me, he figures that he and Leary...

He’s been piling on the comedies recently, with two – Horrible Bosses and the upcoming The Change-Up – out this year, but it appears Jason Bateman is not slowing his pace down. According to the team at Pajiba, he’s now locked in the lead for We’re the Millers. With Dodgeball director Rawson Marshall Thurber now in charge of the megaphone, the script might finally have the chance to dig itself out of the development grave where it has lingered for nearly a decade.Originated by Wedding Crashes writers Steve Faber and Bob Fisher back in 2002, the story finds a veteran pot dealer trying to make one last big score. As part of his plan, he creates a fake family to carry a huge shipment of the drug across the border between Mexico and the Us.Since then, The Full Monty director Peter Cattaneo has come and gone along with...

The Hollywood Reporter scored an exclusive with the story of writer/director Rawson Thurber (Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story) negotiating to film the pot comedy that started the film-scripting careers of Steve Faber and Bob Fisher back in 2002. The writing duo had been TV writers when they decided to write a comedy spec to break into features.
And so they birthed We’re the Millers, a story about a pot dealer who wants to make one last score before retiring from the business on his 30th birthday.
How big? 1,400 pounds.
How’s he’s going to drive a Winnebago to Mexico, fill it with over half a ton of weed, and drive it back across the border? By hiring a fake family.

Novelist, screenwriter and biographer whose subjects included his father, Groucho
Arthur Marx, who has died aged 89, grew up in the shadow of his father, Groucho, and was steeped in the controlled chaos of the Marx Brothers. Torn between trying to distance himself from a demanding father, yet also prove worthy of his genius, he enjoyed a long career as a writer of screen and stage comedies, novels and biographies. Not surprisingly, however, his most successful work capitalised on the public's interest in his father and his uncles, Chico, Harpo, Gummo and Zeppo.
Marx wrote several works about Groucho, the first of which, Life With Groucho (1954), published at the height of his father's television popularity, was a warts-and-all portrait punctuated by Groucho's own annotations. (Marx wrote that he would like to correct the impression that his father was a miser; Groucho's footnote read: "You'd better or I'll cut you off without a nickle.

All this week, we've been sharing parts of our preview of the Experience Music Project special exhibit "Nirvana: Taking Punk to the Masses," which opens at the Seattle museum on Saturday (April 16). Today's artifacts are the controversial Nevermind cover art and some of the iconic objects from the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" video. The commentary is provided by exhibit curator Jacob McMurray.
Nevermind Cover Art:
"The Nirvana exhibit is full of funny moments, and I think that that's really important because I think a lot of the story has been leeched of the humor. This is one piece of humor that didn't originate from the band but from Dgc's art director, Robert Fisher. This is when he's sending the band a comp of what the Nevermind album could look like. He notes on there, 'If anyone has a problem with his d---, we can remove it.' Which I'm sure...

Seattle — It's fitting that on Monday morning, the inside of the "Nirvana: Taking Punk to the Masses" exhibit at the Experience Music Project in this Northwestern music mecca looked much like the band's music sounded: messy, splintered into 1,000 pieces, all over the place, yet somehow meticulously together and beautifully chaotic.
Museum workers inside this gleaming temple to the enduring influence of the city and region's musical heritage were in a mad scramble to get the first-of-its-kind exhibition of Nirvana artifacts into shape for Saturday's opening. Glass display cases with spots destined to feature one-of-a-kind treasures stood empty, while others were already fitted with touchstone effects. Among them were the iconic green sweater worn by late singer Kurt Cobain in the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" video,...

HollywoodNews.com: The Expendables which topped the weekend box-office marks the first time that cinematographer Jeff Kimball, Asc has shot a film with Sylvester Stallone directing and playing a leading role. Their only previous co-venture was 16 years ago when Kimball lensed The Specialist, which featured Stallone in a leading role. Kimball says they had an open, collaborative relationship beginning with the first day of planning. They quickly agreed that the story calls for a natural look in a wide screen film format that pulls the audience deep into the action-packed story.
It?s standard procedure for cinematographers to film tests with leading members of the cast during pre-production planning to see how their skin tones and eyes handle light and shadows. Nuances in how they look at different times are like non-verbal dialog. ?Sly told me that wasn?t necessary,? Kimball says. ?He said, I trust you.
