Fright Night (1985) is to All Hallows’ Eve what A Christmas Story (1983) is to X-Mas: an opus which is worthy of its own 24-hour marathon and an ensuing all-night bacchanalia where blood is the life rather than alcohol. Filmmaker Tom Holland’s love letter to vampire films revitalized a subgenre of horror that was sadly […]

Our lookbacks at the screen adaptations of Stephen King find us at Thinner, starring Robert John Burke...
The film: Morbidly obese and deeply unpleasant lawyer Billy Halleck (Robert John Burke) runs over an old gypsy woman with his car, distracted by his wife Heidi (Lucinda Jenney) who is doing something rather rude to him. His ties to the local law enforcement, Judge Cary Rossington (John Horton) and Chief of Police Duncan Hopley (Daniel von Bargen), means the case is dismissed before it gets to court. However, the old woman’s father (Michael Constantine) has a different kind of justice in mind. He curses Halleck with the word ‘thinner’ and soon, Halleck begins to lose weight at a dangerous and ever-increasing rate.

Last week, I gave you guys a few lists from Amazon and Netflix in regards to what they have to offer via their streaming services this fall. As a newbie to Hulu, I only discovered over the weekend that they, too, beyond just being an amazing resource for television programming, offer up a killer selection of genre movies that are free to stream with a standard Hulu membership.
Here’s a look at an assortment of 31 films from Hulu that I think would be great movies to stream this October. I tried to give you guys a wide variety, too, hitting various sub-genres, so hopefully there’s a little bit of something for everyone in this list.

Since it started in 2001, Screamfest has served as both a launching pad for new filmmakers and a celebration of the horror genre's past, and this year is certainly no exception. Kicking off October 10th and running through the 19th at the Tcl Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, Screamfest 2017 features an eclectic lineup of new horror films as well as celebratory screenings of Tobe Hooper's The Funhouse and Tom Holland's Child's Play.
To celebrate the 17th year of Screamfest, Daily Dead recently had the pleasure of speaking with the festival's founder, Rachel Belofsky, to talk about this year's diverse lineup, honoring the horror genre's history, her reaction to seeing Paranormal Activity for the first time after it was submitted to Screamfest, and much more.
Congratulations on 17 years of Screamfest. That's a really awesome achievement.
Rachel Belofsky: I know. It's unbelievable. Thank you.

Let’s talk memorable movie killers for a second. Since Mrs. Bates first slashed her way through the shower curtain in Room 1 of that roadside motel in Psycho (1960), franchise-minded murderers have had a hard time of it in the consistency department, regardless of how strong they may have lunged out of the gate. Established classics of the genre, like Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street have all given birth to an array of sequels, remakes and reboots that may have extended their nasty protagonists’ shelf life, but none could approach their origins in terms of frights or filmmaking quality.
The exception to this rule of inconsistency and ever-diminishing returns in serial killer movie franchises seems to be the maniac who may have been the most unlikely to succeed, or certainly to endure, to begin with. He would be Charles Lee Ray (played with customary intensity...

You're so cool, Corpse Clubbers! Over thirty years ago, Tom Holland brought undead scares into the suburbs with his directorial debut, Fright Night, introducing viewers to a lovable cast of characters that includes Peter Vincent, Evil Ed, and the suave vampire next door, Jerry Dandrige. The film's effects, performances, and clever writing have made it a fixture of the horror genre over the past three decades, making it the perfect bloodsucking subject for the Corpse Club to sink their teeth into on the latest "Horrigins" episode of Daily Dead's podcast.
In a special "Horrigins" installment of Corpse Club, co-hosts Patrick Bromley and Heather Wixson discuss Tom Holland's directorial debut, Fright Night (1985), including their first experiences watching the "vampire next door" movie, the film's endearing blend of horror and humor, the intriguing cast of characters, the movie's most humanizing moments, and they also talk about the 1988 sequel and the 2011 remake.

This month marks the one-year anniversary of Catalog from the Beyond! I thank those of you who have followed along with my inane babbling for the last twelve months, and to celebrate, I’ve decided to do an extra large edition featuring not one, but two movies that I’ve been circling since I started this column. I’ve said before that I was a latecomer to the Psycho franchise, with my rationale being that the movie was so ingrained in pop culture that I assumed I knew what it had to offer without needing to actually watch it. Now, of course, I know that I was very wrong. But after finally coming to my senses, I subsequently noticed a sizable portion of the horror community that also sings the praises of the two sequels that it spawned in 1983 and 1986.
What intrigued me about these two movies is that although...

Tom Holland (Child's Play, Thinner) returns to horror with the indie feature Rock Paper Dead. Developed by writers Kerry Fleming and Victor Miller, the film involves a "cured...serial killer." Peter returns to his ancestral home to, unsurprisingly, kill again! The film stars: Michael Madsen, Tatum O'Neal, Najarra Townsend and Gabrielle Stone. What is surprising - there are two sequels already in the works, for this series. Rock Paper Dead 2 and 3 will release in 2018 and 2020, respectively. For now, a trailer for the first title is hosted here. The synopsis expands on the film's story slightly. Peter (Luke Macfarlane) has been released from a state hospital, for the criminally insane. Childhood memories, triggered by a visit to his hometown, compel Peter to kill again. A visit from Ashley (Jennifer Titus) might quell his rage, if he can just resolve his past. Rock Paper Dead will release in 2017. Before the film's launch,...

Child's Play and Fright Night (1985) director Tom Holland steps back behind the camera for the new horror film Rock Paper Dead, and you can get a tease of what to expect in the film's first trailer.
"Rock Paper Dead is the story of serial killer Peter “The Doll Maker” Harris, who returns to his ancestral family estate after being released from the state’s hospital for the criminally insane after twenty years – a “cured” man. Once inside the old house, anguished memories from a tortured childhood and visitations from past victims shake Peter’s resolve, but it isn’t until the lovely young Ashley enters his life that Peter makes a fateful decision. One that rekindles old desires that have always ended in murder."

"Welcome back, Peter..." This is the first horror film from director Tom Holland since Thinner in 1996. Rock Paper Dead is the new horror film made by Tom Holland, director of the original Fright Night, Child's Play and Thinner. The film is about a serial killer named Peter "the Doll Maker" Harris, played by Luke Macfarlane, who returns to his hometown after being "cured" in a mental hospital only to relapse into his spooky, doll-maker, serial killer ways. The full cast includes Michael Madsen, Tatum O'Neal, Maureen McCormick, and Jennifer Titus. With so much innovative and unique horror being made, by comparison this looks rather lackluster. Even the lead actor seems miscast, the whole film just seems weird. Here's the first teaser trailer for Tom Holland's Rock Paper Dead, direct from YouTube (via Deadline): From the creators of Friday the 13th and Child's Play!, Rock Paper Dead is the story of serial killer,...

[Hello, readers! To celebrate Valentine's Day, the Daily Dead team thought it would be fun to do things a little differently this year. We're putting the spotlight on our favorite horror-loving characters from genre cinema—people who have represented our own fandom on screen and, in many cases, helped bring our passion for horror into the mainstream. Be sure to check here for more of our tributes to some of the greatest horror fans to ever grace the big screen.]
As a kid, while I loved every possible monster out there, I was a total vampire nerd through and through. I’m not sure what it was that completely drew me in—perhaps it was their power, their bloodlust, their uninhibited nature, or even their immortality—but vampires were where it was at, as far as I was concerned during my childhood. Which brings me to my picks for my favorite horror fans in cinema: Mark Petrie from Tobe Hooper’s miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s ’Salem’s Lot, and Charley Brewster from the original Fright Night. To be honest, it was hard for me to choose between the characters, simply because they both meant so much to me growing up, so I felt like I needed to give each of them their due here.

Tom Holland is working on another sequel to his 1985 vampire favorite Fright Night, and we all have The Copyright Act of 1976 to thank for it.

The Act allows copyrights transferred on or after January 1, 1978 to be reclaimed by the original creators 35 years later, with a five-year window to do so. Holland’s wry take on the Dracula mythos and Hitchcock’s Rear Window celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2015, giving the writer/director only a few short years before he can invite Jerry Dandridge and the gang back into his home. Holland expanded on Twitter, saying that he’s “almost finished with the Fright Night 3 novel and many things go from there.”

Looking back on it now, there doesn’t seem to be any reason why Tom Holland’s 1988 movie Child’s Play should have worked. While it’s not the first “killer doll” story ever produced—audiences had already seen the “Talky Tina” Twilight Zone episode, Anthony Hopkins in Magic, and even Stuart Gordon’s Dolls—it is dependent on a premise so potentially silly that its success was unlikely, particularly for a mainstream studio horror film. That it is very good in addition to being financially successful—subsequently inspiring another five sequels—is some kind of magic trick.
Like a lot of high-concept horror of the ’80s, Child’s Play navigates a difficult path by having a knowing sense of humor about itself while still playing the material straight. Yes, some of this stuff may seem silly, so Holland has several of the characters acknowledge that fact and sometimes embraces...

On Tuesday, October 18th, Chucky will be making house calls with Scream Factory's Collector's Edition Blu-ray release of Child's Play, and we have high-def clips and a trailer teasing the deadly doll.
Child's Play Collector's Edition Blu-ray: "The "chills come thick and fast" (Los Angeles Times) in this riveting, jolt-a-minute thriller about an innocent-looking doll inhabited by the soul of a serial killer who refused to die. From the director of Fright Night, Child's Play comes complete with "excellent special effects" (Leonard Maltin) and a slew of special features that make this Blu-ray your "friend to the end!"
In this "clever, playful thriller" (The New York Times), only six-year-old Andy realizes that Chucky is responsible for a spate of gruesome murders, including that of his unsuspecting babysitter. But the real terror takes hold when the deranged doll becomes determined to transfer his evil spirit to a living human being.

A new film called Rock Paper Dead is assembling a Dirty Quartet of horror talent, led by Fright Night director Tom Holland. Scheduled for a 2017 release, the film concerns serial killer Peter Harris, a.k.a. “The Doll Maker,” who returns home after a 20-year stint in a mental institution. Of course, in this kind of film, the treatment rarely pans out, and soon Harris is besieged by tortured memories from a much rougher-than-average childhood before returning to his murderous ways and setting his sights on a young woman named Ashley.
Director Holland is no stranger to creepy dolls, having brought Chucky to movie screens as the writer and director of 1987’s Child’s Play. Holland also is no slouch when it comes to presumably reformed mass murders, having penned Psycho II in 1983. While the film certainly sounds creepy on paper, Holland is known for the gallows ...

“Hello, Boils and Ghouls” was a typical opening salvo from The Crypt Keeper, the wraparound host (and animatronic cadaver) of HBO’s inventive, creepy and more often than not, mordantly funny salute to the EC Comics of yesteryear, Tales from the Crypt (1989 – 1996). Throughout seven seasons, viewers were subjected to as much gore, nudity, and twisted morality as we could handle. God (or his underworld counterpart) bless premium cable.
Tales ran from June 10th, 1989 to July 19th, 1996, for a grand total of 93 episodes. That’s a lot of grue to ingest, and until ratings started to slip by Season Six, horror fans found it easy to lap up. And as with any anthology series, mileage varies and quality flickers to and fro – but Tales from the Crypt’s success is anchored in the very fact that it was allowed to live, and thrive, for as long as it did.

Brian DePalma’s Carrie (1976) has cast a very wide shadow since it hit theatres. Many horror films have used the trope of telekinesis for the greater bad following its release, including Jennifer, The Fury, Patrick, The Medusa Touch (all ’78), Scanners (’81), and several more. (You can’t make me mention Friday the 13th Part VII. Oh. Dammit.) Of course, television is anything if not inclusive, and the networks scrambled to come up with their own takes on teenage angst. However, ABC’s The Initiation of Sarah (1978) took a slightly different tact and sent the girl off to college – and ended up serving a strong dose of female empowerment.
First broadcast on Monday, February 6th, Sarah had her work cut out, not so much from NBC, who provided their own Monday Night at the Movies, but from CBS’ juggernaut of M*A*S*H/One Day at a Time. Regardless of ratings,...
