Chicago – “Race to Witch Mountain,” now on Blu-Ray and DVD, is a head-scratcher, a movie with more than enough individual elements that should work but proof that a film is not just the sum of its parts. Dwayne Johnson is charismatic, AnnaSophia Robb is one of the better young actresses working today, Carla Gugino is always good, and the source material is beloved, but “Race to Witch Mountain” is a mess that never connects with its target audience or their parents.
Blu-Ray Rating: 2.0/5.0 The plot of “Race to Witch Mountain” is simple. A pair of aliens who look like teenagers (AnnaSophia Robb, Alexander Ludwig) crash land near Las Vegas. While they’re being chased by an alien bounty hunter and a group of human men in black (including Ciaran Hinds, Chris Marquette, and Tom Everett Scott), they stumble into the life of a cab driver (Johnson) and a scientist (Gugino »

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson steers Disney's Race to Witch Mountain our way as an adolescent escapist adventure stripped down from its outdated and more grounded quasi-inspiration, 1975's Escape to Witch Mountain. It is Jerry Bruckheimer for kids; illogical in every sense and carried by a brooding overly charismatic star with car chases designed to put an insurance agent into cardiac arrest. Today's youth should feel insulted but are more apt to be thoroughly entertained by Johnson's charm and flashy visual effects. What better way to grab a kid's attention than kick-start with a crashing spaceship and massive government hunt for its bipedal alien passengers (Alexander Ludwig and AnnaSophia Robb) making a beeline to Las Vegas. The set-up is strong, until the aliens reveal themselves as predictably emotionless pale blond teenage kids delivering dialogue with blinders to a broader vocabulary. Hardly a stretch for Robb who has proven her acting chops before in Bridge to Terabithia, »

Andy Fickman is the director of Race to Witch Mountain starring Dwayne Johnson and Carla Gugino. Below you can read an interview where he discusses working on the remake of the classic family tale. Race to Witchmountain Just hit DVD. Race To Witch Mountain is a thrilling action-adventure about a hard luck Las Vegas cab driver Jack Bruno (Dwayne Johnson), whose life is thrown into chaos when apparent ‘runaway’ teenagers Sara (Annasophia Robb) and Seth (Alexander Ludwig) jump into his taxi. He soon realizes his two fares are children with exceptional paranormal powers whom he must p »

Carla Gugino talks about working in this new Disney remake
Carla Gugino is just part of the all-star cast that made up Race to Witch Mountain, which hits the shelves on DVD and Blu-ray/DVD combo pack today, August 4. Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has passed along a brief chat with Gugino talking about her role in the film, and here's what she had to say.
What attracted you to Race to Witch Mountain?
Carla Gugino: For starters, I was a big fan of the original films. I had a motor home for many years as a kid, so I always related to the children in the original movie - although I didn't really relate to the alien part of their life. I thought the script was really good. Plus, I'm a big fan of [director] Andy Fickman, so when we sat down to talk about it, I decided we »

Just as Return From Witch Mountain lost a little of the magic that made the original Escape to Witch Mountain so special, the series continues to atrophy with the third entry in the conceptual story with Race to Witch Mountain. Escape to Witch Mountain shrouded its story in mystery by keeping the children’s history concealed from both the antagonists, the audience and the children themselves. The film as a whole was a testament to discovering identity, a feat which Return From Witch Mountain couldn’t quite replicate as it became nothing but a film to demonstrate how good Disney had become at its cable-based stunt work. So what benchmark does that leave for Disney to score with Race to Witch Mountain?
Whatever it is, Disney definitely doesn’t quite achieve it.

The new child stars of the Disney remake talks about the new film, working with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and future films
Walt Disney Studios relived their 1975 classic Escape to Witch Mountain with a new modern-day spin in the popular remake Race to Witch Mountain, which hits the shelves on DVD and a Blu-ray/DVD combo set on August 4. This new remake got a revamped cast with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Carla Gugino and even the grown-up child stars of the original film, Kim Richards and Ike Eisenmann. Of course, the new film also needed new child stars which they got in the wonderful combination of AnnaSophia Robb and Alexander Ludwig, who portray the alien siblings Sara and Seth. I had the chance to speak with Robb and Ludwig over the phone recently about their new film on DVD and Bd, and here's what they had to say.

When the opportunity presented itself, I could not help but wait to screen the DVD of Race to Witch Mountain until my niece Corinne, 11, arrived for a visit. After all, family-friendly films should be seen by all aspects of its target audience. The film, going on sale Tuesday, is based on Alexander H. Key’s 1968 novel Escape to Witch Mountain and is an updated remake with little connecting it to the 1975 Disney film or the 1995 sequel.
Much as the recent Taking of Pelham 123 had to update itself to reflect today’s technology and storytelling, this film works in many modern touches so some credit goes to screenwriters Andy Fickman, Mark Bomback, and Matt Lopez. The two orphan children from the book are seen here as aliens in human form, escaping from their crashed flying saucer, trying to obtain a device they need to not only save their ecologically challenged home »

I want you to picture Al Franken, shirtless, lingering on a desert island with a bunch of supermodels. Don't think about it too long, both because it's harmful to your brain and beacuse this mental image, thankfully, will never come to exist. But you must know that the almost-Senator from Minnesota wrote the pitch Don't Send Help along with Geoff Rodkey, and now, God save us, it's actually becoming a movie. Fox has hired screenwriting Cameron Fay to shape the script into something manageable, according to THR, with Soul Men director David Friendly on board as well. Friendly is stepping in for Andy Fickman, who presumably moved on to bigger and better things following Race to Witch Mountain's massive success. The whole pitch sounds like the definition of a one-note joke, and I'm not sure how much humor can really be wrung out of seeing a guy marvel at the »
