A new breed of creature-features was unleashed in the 1990s and continued well into the next decade. Shaking off the ecological messaging of the past, these monsters existed for the sake of pure mayhem. Just to name a few: Tremors, The Relic, Anaconda, Godzilla, Deep Rising and Lake Placid all showcased this trend of irreverent creature chaos. Reptiles and other scaly beasts proved to be a popular source of inspiration for these films, but for that extra crawly experience, bugs were the best and quickest route. Spiders, in particular, led some of the worst infestations on screen in the early 2000s. And on the underbelly of this creeping new wave — specifically the direct-to-video sector — hangs an overlooked offering of spider horror: Arachnid.

Founded in 1953, bought by Julio Fernández in 1987 and now run by his brother Carlos Fernandez and daughter Laura Fernández, Filmax is one of its biggest true-blue independent studios in Spain, involved in film and TV production, and movie distribution, international film and TV sales and exhibition.
How it got there is another question. “At Filmax, we’ve always bet on creative talent. In Spain, there’s always been creative talents that have revolutionized its sector: Architects, artists and designers,” says Laura Fernández, a Filmax executive producer. “Filmax has known how to find talent in all parts of film production: Composers, screenwriters, DPs, casting, VFX and directors.”
Jaume Balagueró’s “Nameless” gave Filmax its first experience of fulsome international pre-sales at 1999’s Mifed, helping to usher in a golden age of Spanish auteur genre that resonates to this day.

Magnolia’s genre arm Magnet Releasing has acquired U.S. rights to [Rec] 4: Apocalypse, the fourth installment in the Spanish horror franchise about an epidemic of demonic possession that’s captured on camera.
Sony put out the first Rec film in 2007 and remade it as Quarantine, but Magnet has been aboard the series since releasing the second and third films stateside. Jaume Balagueró returned to direct [Rec] 4 after co-directing the first two films following a third entry that curiously veered away from the franchise’s found-footage thrills and into horror-comedy terrain. [Rec] 4 picks up after the events of the second film as young reporter Angela Vidal (Manuela Velasco) wakes up in a high-security quarantine deep within an ocean freighter and must battle the virus on the high seas.

It explores with dark humor the daily life of a group of teenage kids living in a hospital who become unlikely friends. Nagle is exec producing with Amblin’s Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank as well as Sergio Aguero; Carlos and Julio Fernandez of Filmax co-executive produce. The newly picked-up Fox drama series Red Band Society, Empire and Gotham join previously ordered Backstrom and Hieroglyph. All you DVD collecting horror fanatics out there have probably noticed some of the awesome releases that have been coming out of the UK’s Arrow Video as of late. They do an amazing job packaging their discs, windowed slip covers, allowing you to choose which of the multiple artworks to display on your shelf, posters, and several discs to hold all the fantastic extras. They know what we collectors want, and they provide.
Now Arrow is releasing their first several film box set, and it is, brace yourself… all Fantastic Factory titles.
The Fantastic Factory was a branch of Filmax founded in 2000 in Barcelona by filmmakers Brian Yuzna and Julio Fernández. With the original [Rec] filmmakers Paco Plaza and Jaume Balagueró delivered a truly insane experience that was of course neutered and changed into a flick called Quarantine here in the States. [Rec] 2 expanded on the first one's demonic storyline (really, screw rabies) and delivered a movie that is akin to mixing Doom 3 with The Exorcist. Both flicks were badass, and now word has come that the duo are bringing us two more flicks in the franchise via Filmax called [Rec] Genesis and [Rec] Apocalypse!

[Rec] 2, the sequel to last year’s record-breaking Spanish horror hit, starts filming next Monday, November 10 in Barcelona. The original raked in $27 million worldwide and picked up prizes at all the major European horror festivals, including Sitges, Fantasporto, Brussels and Amsterdam, and inspired the recent U.S. remake Quarantine.
Once again produced by Julio Fernández for Filmax and directed by Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza, [Rec 2] kicks off its story a few hours after the events portrayed in its predecessor. The shoot is scheduled to last six weeks, and returning crew members include art director Gemma Fauria, director of photography Pablo Rosso, editor David Gallart (Goya Award winner for the first film) and sound engineers Xavi Mas and Oriol Tarragó; the latter nabbed a Goya for his work on the year’s other Spanish genre blockbuster, The Orphanage. Special makeup FX will once more be handled by David Ambit (pictured, making up...

- #76. Transsiberian Director: Brad AndersonWriters: Will Conroy and Anderson Producers: Julio Fernández Distributor: Currently Seeking Distribution The Gist:Crime thriller revolves around an American couple (Woody Harrelson and Emily Mortimer) traveling on the Trans-Siberian Railway from China to Moscow. When they meet another couple (Mara and Noriega), the result is a train ride full of deception and murder. Ben Kingsley and Thomas Kretschmann will play Russian police officers pursuing the couples. Fact: Anderson last directed two episodes of The Wire. See It: This is yet another example of how the filmmaker is at ease in the thriller genres with a twist. I'm expecting The Machinist type results with superb perfs from this cast. Release Date/Status?: Sundance and Berlin film festival showcases will help find this film a domestic distributor - a late year release is probable. ...

MADRID -- Pedro Almodovar's Volver walked away with five top honors at the 21st Goya Awards ceremony Sunday, leaving rivals Alatriste, Pan's Labyrinth and Salvador to divvy up the remainder of the prizes.
Despite the fact that Volver snagged several key awards, including film, director, actress, original score and supporting actress, Spain's most international director was not on hand to receive his award, instead opting to stay home. Almodovar had a falling out with the Spanish film academy in 2005 over the treatment of his film Bad Education and hasn't attended a gala ceremony since.
Even so, Volver star Penelope Cruz was the undisputed queen of the night.
Enveloped in the good vibes of being on home turf, Cruz -- is nominated for an Oscar for the same role -- won her second Goya award. The Spanish actress held court from a center seat in the auditorium and was greeted by winners on their way to pick up their own awards as well by the master of ceremonies, Jose Corbacho.
Upon receiving her Goya award for best actress for the role of a single mother in Volver, an emotional Cruz thanked Almodovar.
"With him and with (the role of) Raimunda, I've lived the best moments of my life," said a teary-eyed Cruz, who admitted she would go straight to see the director upon leaving the ceremony.
With a lipstick kiss mark on her cheek, Cruz was the impromptu presenter of the following award, best feature animation, and congratulated Filmax's Julio Fernandez for taking home the prize for the boxoffice success "Perez, el ratoncito de tus suenos."
Later in the evening, she reappeared to accept Almodovar's directorial award for Volver, his 16th feature.

Paramount Classics has snapped up distribution rights from Filmax International to Brad Anderson's Sundance Film Festival selection The Machinist, starring Christian Bale. The speciality division has aquired rights to the pic in North America, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Latin America, Australia and New Zealand. It is planning a late-2004 release. The film, which also recently screened at the Berlin International Film Festival, stars Bale as factory machinist Trevor Reznik, who has not slept in a year. His lack of sleep has led to a deterioration in his physical and mental health, and he struggles to come to terms with his breakdown. Jennifer Jason Leigh, Michael Ironside, Aitana Sanchez Gijon and John Sharian also star in the Julio Fernandez-produced film. "We are extremely proud to be working with Brad, a director of incredible vision," Paramount Classics co-presidents Ruth Vitale and David Dinerstein said. "His film is powerfully unique and evocative. Bale's work is equally impressive." Bale notably lost 65 lbs. for the part. Filmax president Carlos Fernandez and Filmax senior vp sales and co-productions Antonia Nava served as executive producers. The rights deal was negotiated by John Sloss with Endeavor.
