After failing to convince Will Smith to star in his proposed adaptation of Fantastic Voyage and with very few A-listers deemed worthy enough to bring the adventure movie to life, director Shawn Levy could soon turn his attention to a new project at 20th Century Fox that will act as his next feature post-Real Steel.
Deadline reports that Levy is looking at re-telling the Frankenstein story with yet another adaptation of Mary Shelley’s famous Gothic novel that could go into production late this year or early 2012. This one has been scripted by Max Landis (son of John) and yes, it’s another Frankenstein and if I’m a little suspect as to whether this will actually happen…. take a look at this.
Since WhatCulture! (then Obsessed With Film) started in mid 2006, we’ve had no less than half a dozen Frankenstein movies threatened by Hollywood but none of them ever made.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is certainly en vogue in Hollywood right now. It seems like you can’t turn around without bumping into another Frankenstein film in development and 20th Century Fox is no different in cooking up its own take on the classic horror tale.
According to Variety, 20th Century Fox has tapped Max Landis (Chronicle) to write the screenplay for their untitled Frankenstein project. No director is currently attached to the project though the studio has been courting David Yates (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows), Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Ultimatum), and Ron Howard (The Dark Tower).
Not much more is known about this particular Frankenstein project save that Davis Entertainment will be producing. Take a gander at some of the other Frankenstein projects under development right now:

As writer Steve Niles tweeted recently, “Haley Joel Osment sees dead people again, but this time in pieces.” There are multiple Frankenstein-themed projects in development right now with different studios but this one has just nabbed The Sixth Sense star.
According to Variety, Haley Joel Osment (Sassy Pants, AI) will star as Victor Franklin in a film adaptation of Steve Niles’ (30 Days of Night) graphic novels, Wake The Dead. This modern day Frankenstein tale follows Victor, “a college student experimenting with reversing death.”
Jay Russell (Ladder 49, Tuck Everlasting) will direct the film with a script he adapted along with James V. Hart (Tuck Everlasting, Bram Stokers’ Dracula). Slash, former lead guitarist of Guns N’ Roses, will be producing the project with Michael Williams and Rob Eric of Slasher Films, Slash’s production company dedicated to horror films. The first of nine Frankenstein movies in the works is starting to be sewn together. Wake the Dead has cast The Sixth Sense actor Haley Joel Osment playing Victor Franklin, a college student fascinated with bringing people back from death. The Water Horse director Jay Russell will helm from a script he co-wrote. It's based on the graphic novel from Steven Niles and sets the Frankenstein story in the present day. Guns 'n' Roses guitarist Slash is producing. Production starts in the fall.
Here are the other Frankenstein projects in development:
* 20th Century Fox has hired Max Landis to write a script and has major directors like Paul Greengrass and David Yates under consideration;
* Indie Frankenstein's Army takes place at the end of World War II. Russian soldiers find Dr. Frankenstein's journal in a top secret Nazi laboratory. They use the notes to build an army by sewing together...

20th Century Fox and producer John Davis have hired rising scribe Max Landis ("Chronicle") to pen a script for a new take on the "Frankenstein" tale says The Hollywood Reporter.
Vulture adds that this version will tell the tale through the eyes of Igor, Victor Frankenstein’s assistant. Davis, son of John Landis, will obviously produce. This is yet another version of the tale in the works, joining a half dozen in development.
They include Guillermo del Toro's remake of the 1931 Universal film adaptation, Summit Entertainment's adaptation of Kenneth Oppel's "This Dark Endeavor", Stuart Beattie's adaptation of "I, Frankenstein", Ghost House Pictures' adaptation of Peter Ackroyd's novel "The Casebook of Victor Frankenstein", Guns n Roses guitarist Slash's comic adaptation "Wake the Dead", and Sony Pictures' contemporary re-telling from a pitch by Craig Fernandez.

Finally, Hollywood has decided to give audiences what they've been clamoring for: A half-dozen different Frankenstein movies in quick succession. If you've got some cash lying around, now would probably be a good time to invest in Tesla coils, neck bolts and giant square-toed boots.
This Dark Endeavor, based on the upcoming novel of the same name, has brought on Cloverfield's Matt Reeves to direct. The book and film are based on the life of a young Frankenstein, though there's still no word on how he'll be pronouncing his name.
Meanwhile, Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures will be producing The Casebook of Victor Frankenstein, which sounds like it will blend fact with fiction, featuring appearances by both Mary and Percy Shelley. This Franken-movie will be written by David Auburn, best known for his screenplays for Proof and The Lake House.
We're still awaiting news on the inevitable Frankenberry movie.

Oh, good. So this week, Frankenstein films are the new Snow White/Wizard of Oz/etc. We've got news on two Frankenstein-related projects that have both moved forward today. Matt Reeves moved from director of interest thanks to Cloverfield to something approaching A-list status with Let Me In. He's certainly lining up a few high-profile genre projects, and the latest is This Dark Endeavor, an adaptation of the Kenneth Oppel 'young Frankenstein' novel that Summit optioned [1] not too long ago. The other is The Casebook of Victor Frankenstein, which Sam Raimi's Ghost House pictures is producing. That one just hired playwright David Auburn to script. More detail on both, as well as vague updates on several other Frankenstein projects, after the break. The bigger news here is that Matt Reeves is now signed to direct This Dark Endeavor, which Jacob Aaron Estes (Mean Creek) has written for Summit.

Vampires, werewolves and zombies have had their fun. Now it's time for another classic monster to get in on the action.
The tale of the well-meaning if tragically misguided medical student and his wretched Creature will be told once again as "The Casebook of Victor Frankenstein" is in the laboratories of Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert's Ghost House Pictures, according to Deadline.
"Casebook" is based on the novel by Peter Ackroyd, which covers the youthful days of Frankenstein as he begins experimenting with corpses, influenced by the outspoken English poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. Percy's wife Mary -- the real-life author of "Frankenstein" -- appears as a character as well. The book is being adapted by David Auburn ("Proof").

Some monsters never die!
Deadline is reporting that Sony Pictures Entertainment is involved in bringing a new version of the Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to the big screen.
Little is known yet, except the film will be a contemporary version of the classic tale and a scriptwriter by the name of Craig Fernandez, who wrote 2003’s Biker Boyz (a different kind of horror film), originally pitched the project to the studio too.
It’s always interesting to both learn that those old, much-loved horror archetypes are returning, and to eventually see how modern cinemagoers respond. Some are huge crowd-pleasers, despite the lack of reverence towards the character’s history (the Twilight series), while others fail to find much of an audience, despite delivering a fresh take on the material (one which comes to mind, is the underrated Jack Nicholson 1993 feature, Wolf).

News broke yesterday that Sony Pictures has bought the rights to Frankenstein and plans to update the classic horror story to modern times, with Craig Fernandez writing the screenplay. Fernandez is no stranger to updating classics as he just wrote the upcoming From Prada To Nada, a contemporary telling of Sense and Sensibility with a latin spin. No other crucial details have been released other than everyone's favorite word; "modernizing".
Modernizing Frankenstein isn't an easy thing to do. Although it was done rather well I should add in Lucky McKee's May, a film where Angela Bettis starred as an awkward and lonely young woman who made her own friend out of the body parts of her acquaintances. How Sony Pictures plans to modernize Mary Shelley's classic horror story however remains to be seen. I'm curious to hear more details about this unfold, as I am always interested in...

Matt Tolmach, the former co-president of Sony, stepped down from his post in order to serve as a hands-on producer for films like this one. Sony is developing a contemporary version of Mary Shelley's classic Gothic monster story Frankenstein with Tolmach at the helm.
Frankenstein was originally made iconic as a Universal film back in the 1930s starring Boris Karloff, and another later version starred Robert DeNiro with Kenneth Branagh as the director. There aren't many details on the updated version, but Craig Fernandez will pen the script. Here's hoping it won't lose all of its vintage charm in the update.
Tolmach is also behind the Spider-Man reboot starring Andrew Garfield.

First we got a retelling of "Beauty and the Beast" set in high class Manhattan in "Beastly," then we got a gothic twist on "Red Riding Hood" thanks to "Twilight" director Catherine Hardwicke, and now Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" is about to get a modernized reboot.

Craig Fernandez ("From Prada to Nada," "Everything Must Go") will write the script and Matt Tolmach, a former Sony co-president, will produce. Story details are sketchy but this is one of several Frankenstein projects in development, though all the others presently are looking very uncertain.
These include a version that Guillermo del Toro will produce, the David Auburn-scripted more epic take on the tale entitled "Casebook of Victor Frankenstein", a film version of the Dean Koontz's novel series set in contemporary New Orleans, the comic adaptation "I, Frankenstein" from the makers of the "Underworld" series, and a "Bride of Frankenstein" remake at Universal.

With AMC’s new hit show ‘The Walking Dead’ re-sparking interest in zombies, screenwriter Craig Fernandez is hoping to do the same with Frankenstein. The writer is developing a script of the modernization of the Frankenstein monster for Sony, and Matt Tolmach is on board to produce the film, Cinemablend.com is reporting. There’s no word yet on how Fernandez will update the beloved tale, but his movie is just the latest suggested Frankenstein adaptation to hit Hollywood recently. Rumors are circulating that the Dean Koontz ‘Frankenstein’ series is heading for the big screen, as well as Kevin Grevioux’s graphic novel ‘I, Frankenstein.’ Fernandez’s Frankenstein movie is just one of the latest scripts he [...]...

Sony Pictures is looking to pick up a pitch for a brand new "Frankenstein" movie, which will be a contemporary version of the Mary Shelley novel. Craig Fernandez, who pitched the project, will write the script. While Universal is known for its classic monster franchises, Sony went through its own infatuation with horror classics in the early 1990s. That included the 1994 "Frankenstein," which starred Robert De Niro as the monster with director Kenneth Branagh as Victor Frankenstein. The studio also made the 1992 Francis Coppola-directed Bram Stoker's "Dracula" and the 1994 Mike Nichols-directed "Wolf." Fernandez is not a well-known writers, since he's just starting his Hollywood career. But he's currently working on "Prada to Nada" for Lionsgate, and "Everything Must Go" and "Clay's Ark" for DreamWorks Animation.

On October 29, news broke that Sony Pictures Co-President Matt Tolmach had stepped down from his post to sign a multi-year contract as a Sony producer. Tolmach's first course of action was to quickly join Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad as co-producers of the upcoming Spider-Man reboot starring Andrew Garfield. Now comes word of Tolmach's first studio pitch in his new role of producer - a revisiting of Mary Shelley's legendary horror novel Frankenstein.
Tolmach and Sony have pegged veritable unknown Craig Fernandez to write the script, who has yet achieve mainstream success but has been quickly cutting his cinematic teeth with an impressive lineup of screenplays. Fernandez just finished writing From Prada to Nada for Lionsgate, is currently adapting Octavia Butler's children novel Clay's Ark for Dreamworks, and also has an adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's Captains Courageous in his queue.
Worryingly, however, rumor has it that the pitch...

Shock is reporting that Sony Pictures is planning on another Frankenstein film that was pitched to the studio by Craig Fernandez (Everything Must Go and From Prada to Nada). The only other thing that is currently known, is that it’s a modern retelling of the classic novel.
Sony’s last attempt was Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein from Thor‘s director, Kenneth Branagh, from 1994 that had Robert DeNiro has the Monster. Is this news alive! for you?...

Growing up as a horror fan, there were few characters I was able to relate to more than Frankenstein's monster. There are tons of fans out there who feel the same exact way so for better or worse, the character has become one of the most beloved icons in film history. Being fully aware of this, Sony Pictures is going to the well again to bring forth a new telling of this classic story.
According to Deadline New York Sony Pictures Entertainment producer Matt Tolmach is at the center of a preemptive pitch deal for yet another Frankenstein. The film will be a contemporary version of the Mary Shelley novel. Craig Fernandez pitched the project and will write the script. Tolmach will produce through Matt Tolmach Productions.

It would seem that Hollywood just can’t stop running around, scraping up bits of corpses and applying the ol’ electricity to get them up and running again. And no, we don’t mean Martin Lawrence’s movie career. We’re talking Frankenstein. Because Sony has decided that it’s time someone took another crack at Mary Shelley’s tale.Yes, despite the approximately 73 billion other adaptations stumbling their way through the development lab, the studio feels that what the world needs now is not love, sweet love, but a fresh, contemporary take on Shelley’s fable about man hubristically playing God and it all going monstrously Pete Tong. This time, the man they’ve decided to hand the job to is Craig Fernandez, who won the opportunity by pitching a modern-day version of the story that Sony executives liked. Former studio co-president Matt Tolmach, who has re-invented himself as a producer,...

There's nothing quite like the classic stories... at least when it comes to transforming them into countless movie and TV projects. Familiarity doesn't breed contempt in Hollywood, and so yet another version of Mary Shelley's macabre (and conveniently public domain) classic Frankenstein is in the works at Sony. This one is early in the process, with writer Craig Fernandez (From Prada To Nada) spinning a contemporary version of an obsessed scientist and his horrific reanimated creation....

Most people figure it'll be zombies to finally come along and conquer the dread vampire craze, but my money's always been on Frankenstein. Sure, he's just one character-- and a mis-named one at that, given that he's really Frankenstein's unnamed monster--but the character has endured for a reason, and is highly unlikely to get the "sexy" treatment that has made vampires so irritating lately. So count me in for the latest Frankenstein comeback at Sony, where Deadline reports that Craig Fernandez has pitched a contemporary take on the story and will write the script for producer Matt Tolmach. Fernandez has a number of projects in development around Hollywood, including a script at DreamWorks Animation and the Lionsgate film From Prada to Nada, a Latino take on Sense and Sensibility. There's no more information in the Deadline piece about exactly how he'll update Mary Shelley's Frankenstein novel for a modern audience,...

Sony Pictures has picked up a new film pitch from Craig Fernandez that re-imagines Mary Shelly's Frankenstein in a contemporary setting. It's not really an original idea for a film, but there aren't many original ideas getting picked up by movie studios these days. Apparently it's too risky for them.
Fernandez, who will write the film, has worked on the upcoming Lionsgate movie From Prada to Nada, described as a Latin spin on Sense and Sensibility. He also just scripted a film for DreamWorks Animation called Everything Must Go, based on Terry Pratchett's The Bromeliad Trilogy, and is adapting the Octavia Butler novel Clay's Ark for DreamWorks Animation and Shrek producer Aaron Warner.
Former Sony Pictures co-president Matt Tolmach will produce the film through his Matt Tolmach Productions.
If you want any more details on the story just read Mary Shelly's Frankenstein and imagine it in a modern day contemporary setting.

Matt Tolmach, the former co-president of Sony Pictures Entertainment who left his cushy executive post to focus on producing, has set up his first project at the studio. Tolmach will produce a contemporary adaptation of Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" for Sony through his company Matt Tolmach Productions, the studio has confirmed to TheWrap. Craig Fernandez will write the script based on his own pitch, which Sony took off the table in a preemptive deal. The "Frankenstein" tale has always been my favorite of the classic monster movies, which also include Dracula, The Wolfman and...

Countless versions of the iconic monster movie Frankenstein have hit the big screen from time to time, and while recent projects have looked at peculiar twists on the classic story, Sony is looking to simply update it. Deadline reports former studio co-president Matt Tolmach who left his post to become a producer has crafted a deal to acquire a pitch for a new take on Frankenstein. Only described as a contemporary version of Mary Shelly's novel, the idea comes from writer Craig Fernandez. While his work on films like Biker Boyz and From Prada to Nada don't inspire much hope, he also recently scripted the indie Everything Must Go starring Will Ferrell. Though the writer seems to have a couple smudges on his resume, sometimes you have to swim in shit to get the gold (that's trademarked). Alex quite enjoyed Everything Must Go at the Toronto International Film Festival,...
