Back in 1983, legendary producer Roger Corman brought the world a sword and sorcery film with an awesome title: Deathstalker. It was so successful, it paved the way for three sequels: Deathstalker II: Duel of the Titans (1987), Deathstalker and the Warriors from Hell (1988), and Deathstalker IV: Match of the Titans (1991). The franchise went dormant for more than thirty years, but earlier this year we learned that it’s being revived by filmmaker Steven Kostanski – whose previous credits include Manborg, Father’s Day, The Void, Leprechaun Returns, Psycho Goreman, and episodes of the short-lived Day of the Dead TV series. Kostanski is writing and directing a Deathstalker remake that has Daniel Bernhardt (John Wick) on board to play the title character… and today, Variety has unveiled the first official image of Bernhardt in character! Produced by the late Roger Corman, the low budget sword and sorcery film Deathstalker was a hit in theaters back in 1983 and went on to become a cult classic through home video and TV airings, and it was followed by three sequels released between 1987 and 1991.
Decades later, Deathstalker will return with a fresh remake, and Variety has shared a first look image from director Steven Kostanski’s (The Void, PG: Psycho Goreman) new movie.
The website notes that the Deathstalker remake is now filming in Canada, with Raven Banner Entertainment launching sales in Cannes. Daniel Bernhardt (John Wick, Nobody, Barry) will star as the titular Deathstalker in what’s being described as “a newly reimagined installment of the cult sword and sorcery series of the same name.”

Raven Banner Entertainment has launched sales at the Cannes Film Festival’s market on the reboot of Roger Corman’s cult sword and sorcery film series, “Deathstalker,” which is currently shooting in Canada.
Daniel Bernhardt stars as the titular character in this reimagined instalment, directed by Steven Kostanski. Bernhardt plays a barbarian cursed by a magical talisman, leading him into conflict with a malevolent wizard and monstrous assassins.
The original “Deathstalker” films, produced by Corman in the 1980s, followed the success of John Milius’ “Conan the Barbarian.” Kostanski’s reboot focuses on the fantasy setting, utilizing creature suits, prosthetic FX make-up and stop-motion animation from his Action Pants FX shop, which recently completed work on upcoming horror-comedy “Frankie Freako,” which is also being sold by Raven Banner at Cannes.
Ahead of the film, Vault Comics released a new “Deathstalker” comic series, which sold out in under a week. Written by...

Raven Banner Entertainment will launch international sales at the Cannes Film Market for Steven Kostanski’s latest feature “Frankie Freako.”
Kostanski’s previous feature “Psycho Goreman” premiered at SXSW in 2020 and gathered a cult following worldwide. Reviewing the film for Variety, critic Owen Gleiberman described the film as “‘The Toxic Avenger’ remade by the Robert Rodriguez of ‘Spy Kids.'”
“Frankie Freako” is described by Raven Banner as Kostanki’s homage to the practical-fx-driven monster horror-comedies of the 1980s like “Gremlins 2” and “Ghoulies 3: Ghoulies Go to College.” It tells the story of workaholic yuppie Conor Sweeney whose perfect life is turned upside down when he accidentally unleashes a trio of tiny trouble-makers into his home, led by the maniacal rock-n-roll party monster Frankie Freako. It’s a race against time as Conor must defeat the trio and clean up their trail of destruction before his wife returns from her weekend work trip,...

Manborg. Father’s Day. The Void. Leprechaun Returns. Psycho Goreman. There’s been a throwback element to all of the feature films we’ve gotten from director Steven Kostanski so far, and his next feature will be no different. Variety has confirmed that production has wrapped on Kostanski’s horror comedy Frankie Freako, which is said to be a “commemoration of various practical FX-led projects including Gremlins 2: The New Batch and Ghoulies Go to College“. Well, if you say your movie pays tribute to Gremlins 2 and Ghoulies 3, you’ve already sold me on it.

It seems as though Psycho Goreman isn’t the only hunky boy in filmmaker Steven Kostanski‘s cinematic universe; Variety reports horror comedy Frankie Freako is on the way.
While Psycho Goreman introduced writer/director Kostanski’s take on ’90s tokusatsu, centered around an intergalactic conquerer, Frankie Freako will unleash a maniacal rock-n-roll party monster.
Frankie Freako stars Conor Sweeney as he accidentally lets loose “a trio of tiny trouble-makers into his home, led by the maniacal rock-n-roll party monster Frankie Freako. It’s a race against time as Conor must defeat the rambunctious ruffians and clean up their trail of destruction before his wife returns from her weekend work trip, all while going on an unexpected journey of self-discovery.”
Adam Brooks (Psycho Goreman) and Kristy Wordsworth star alongside Sweeney.

If there’s one film that I saw in 2013 that stayed with me longer than any other, it is Motivational Growth. Most of you haven’t had the chance to see it yet, but I have a feeling that when you do, you will love it as well. I’ll admit, that if somebody had told me that I would absolutely love, a film about a guy talking to a huge pile of intelligent mold that is growing in his bathroom floor, I’d probably have told them that they were insane. It’s an absurd premise, but some of the greatest films of all time have absurd premises as well. Motivational Growth is shot, acted, and edited so exceptionally well, that I think it will appeal to many, even those that aren’t usually a fan of oddball indie horror flicks. The details of a North American release of the film have surfaced.

Of the nearly 70 submissions received the Indiecan folk winnowed the final selection down to just seven, each of whom is paired with an established mentor and tasked with raising ten thousand dollars to make their first film. Enter A Sunday Kind Of Love, the proposed debut from Georgie Sabbagh.Following in the vein of such films as Before Sunset, Annie Hall, Lost in Translation and Midnight in Paris, A Sunday Kind of Love is...

Line-up includes new features by Dario Argento, Jacob Tierney and Fantasia alumni Rob Grant and Kerry Prior.
Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival has announced the Off-Frontières selection for this year’s Frontières International Co-Production Market.
The line-up of 12 projects features projects from Canada, Mexico and the UK, among others, and includes the next features from Dario Argento and Jacob Tierney as well as follow-up features from Fantasia alumni Rob Grant, Pat Kiely, Kerry Prior and Olivier Sabino.
Stephanie Trepanier, Frontières creative director, told Screen: “The Off-Frontières line-up of project always allows us to include more projects we believe in, but couldn’t fit in the official 12-projects selection because of quota limitations or because the project is more advanced than the scope we set for the official Frontières line-up.

Indiecan Entertainment in partnership with Indiegogo has announced the launch of the Indiegogo campaigns for this year’s INDIECAN10K feature film projects.
INDIECAN10K is an initiative that supports seven feature projects from emerging Canadian filmmakers. Through Indiegogo, the filmmaking teams must each raise a minimum of $10,000 as contribution to their film’s overall budget.
“INDIECAN10K gives emerging filmmakers the opportunity to get their first feature film made and Indiegogo’s reach to the broader community is the perfect platform to give the filmmakers the chance to make their dream into a reality,” said Avi Federgreen, founder of Indiecan Entertainment.
Mentoring producers from each Canadian province will work with the filmmakers to guide them from production through post-production.
Service providers and post-production facilities across Canada will support the projects, totalling an approximate value of $200,000 per film in sponsorship. Indiecan Entertainment will distribute the films.
