Paul Giamatti in talks to replace Penn in ‘Three Stooges’

11 August 2009 10:27 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Why I oughta'...

Paul Giamatti is currently in talks to replace the recently absent Sean Penn in the Farrelly Brothers upcoming comedy The Three Stooges.

According to the The Boston Globe, Giamatti, who was fantastic in Duplicity, will pick up the role of the fluffy-headed Larry. Benicio Del Toro and Jim Carrey are on the hook to play Moe and Curly, respectively.

Penn exited the project to spend more time with the family.

The Three Stooges was originally set up with original Stooge shorts producer Columbia, until rights holder C3 Entertainment Inc. sold the film rights to Warner Bros. for the Farrelly brothers to direct in 2001. MGM later obtained the rights along with the Farrelly’s services.

The Farrelly’s script, which Bobby Farrelly referred to as Dumb, Dumber & Dumbest, was originally plotted out as a series of four shorts. The story was eventually changed to a full-length feature. »

'Three Stooges' Update: Paul Giamatti Replaces Sean Penn

10 August 2009 4:46 PM, PDT | Fandango | See recent Fandango news »

I'm not sure if this revolving door full of different actors is an indication that the film will turn out just as jumbled and confusing, but I will say that it can't be the greatest sign of things to come. Then again, I was never really fond of a Three Stooges movie from Peter and Bobby Farrelly (There's Something About Mary) in the first place, mainly because I feel the Farrelly brothers have ...

N'yuk, N'yuk, N'yuk! Is Paul Giamatti Replacing Sean Penn in "The Three Stooges?"

10 August 2009 3:09 PM, PDT | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

As we reported in June (Bummer! Sean Penn Says No to "Three Stooges" Among Others!), Sean Penn left Peter and Bobby Farrelly's planned production of "The Three Stooges."

But now, Mark Shanahan of The Boston Globe is saying that the Farrelly brothers have signed on Paul Giamatti to replace Penn as Larry!

Benicio Del Toro is still set to play Moe! Not looking so great though, is Jim Carrey's participation as Curly. Apparently, the star is not going to say n'yuk, n'yuk, n'yuk.

But the Farrely brothers know who they want, they're just not revealing the name right now. Stay tuned... »

Three Stooges Shake-Up: Giamatti In, Carrey Out?

10 August 2009 12:26 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

In June, Sean Penn announced he was taking at least a year off from Hollywood to spend time with his family.  His departure immediately put two projects in jeopardy:  Cartel and The Three Stooges.  The first, a Mafia drama, is still scrambling for a new lead.  The latter is a Farrelly brothers comedy once filled with the town’s top talent, except now they’re looking for a new Larry and Curly.

The Boston Globe is reporting Oscar-nominee Paul Giamatti is not only up for the role of Larry, but he has already signed according to co-director Peter Farrelly.  The director was in Boston for a Red Sox game and dropped the bomb on the paper last Friday.  No official confirmation from MGM.

However, this may end up being news to Giamatti.  After Bobby Farrelly said he would make a “sensational Larry” in June, Giamatti’s representation denied the connection »

Farrelly: 'Carrey Out, Giamatti In For Three Stooges'

10 August 2009 12:11 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Jim Carrey has walked away from Peter and Bobby Farrelly's upcoming remake of The Three Stooges, according to a new report.

The funnyman was expected to take on the role of silver screen clown Curly in the long-awaited film, after entering negotiations in April.

Carrey had even begun to master his comedy voice and started to pile on the pounds to play the chubby character, with his girlfriend Jenny McCarthy admitting fans would be impressed with his performance.

She said, "He's definitely practising the role of Curly... He's basically enjoying his desserts... He's going to gain 50 pounds to play Curly.

"I listen to him walking around doing Curly... People are gonna be blown away when they see him."

But, according to The Boston Globe, Peter Farrelly has confirmed Carrey is no longer involved in the project - although Paul Giamatti is.

The Sideways star distanced himself from rumours he was signing on to the film back in June, when he insisted there had been no talks between himself and the Farrelly brothers.

However, the publication alleges Giamatti has now been confirmed to fill the role vacated by Sean Penn, who quit the film earlier this year citing personal reasons. »

Three Stooges News: Giamatti In, Carrey Out?

10 August 2009 12:02 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Peter and Bobby Farrelly's long-suffering project The Three Stooges has added and subtracted two more names to its cast, according to Boston.com, who caught up with Peter at a show at Fenway Park. Paul Giamatti, who can be seen on a limited number of arthouse screens in the wonderful new movie Cold Souls, will be taking on the role of Larry, the curly-haired comedian of the trio. (Oscar-winner Sean Penn ducked out of both The Three Stooges and Cartel earlier this summer.) Beleagured Wolf Man Benecio Del Toro is still on board to play slap-happy Moe, but Curly remains a mystery. According to Peter, who was trying to watch Paul McCartney while the reporter sussed out this info, the rumors that Jim Carrey will be playing the big-mouthed baldie are incorrect.

So who is willing to take the significant amount of Stooge abuse in the trio? Personally, I nominate Shia Labeouf. »

Paul Giamatti Replaces Sean Penn in Three Stooges

10 August 2009 8:36 AM, PDT | TheMovingPicture.net | See recent TheMovingPicture news »

Peter Farrelly has confirmed to the Boston Globe that Paul Giamatti has signed on to replace Sean Penn as Larry in the Farrelly Brothers’ big screen Three Stooges film. Benicio Del Toro is still on board to play Moe but Jim Carrey is reported no longer attached to play Curly. The project has been stuck in development hell for several years and finally looked to be getting off the ground when the all-star cast was announced in March. Penn left the project in June, taking a break from Hollywood to focus on his family. Originally constructed as four separate shorts, the feature screenplay has since been streamlined into a single narrative. Included in the story line is an opening that shows the Stooges as kids in an orphanage, a device that will require some Benjamin Button-style visual trickery to place the adult actors’ heads on child actors’ bodies. In an interview with The Boston Globe, director Peter Farrelly announced a new casting decision for The Three Stooges, which he is directing with brother Bobby Farrelly. Paul Giamatti (Sideways, American Splendor) will play Larry, replacing Sean Penn who withdrew from the movie two months ago. Giamatti will star opposite Benicio del Toro as Moe.

Jim Carrey was rumored to star as Curly, but the Farrelly Brothers confirm that this is not true, and they have not yet cast anyone in the role.

The Three Stooges: Paul Giamatti Joins, Jim Carrey Leaves?

9 August 2009 12:47 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

In June, a gossip columnist suggested to the Farrelly Brothers that Paul Giamatti play Larry in The Three Stooges after Sean Penn backed out of the role due to family issues. Bobby Farrelly admitted to the paper that Giamatti would not only be "a sensational Larry," but they'd "love to have Paul." Unfortunately "an offer" has already been sent out "to someone else." Giamatti who was also in town at the Nantucket Film Festival with his comedy Cold Souls, didn't seem too responsive to the idea. "They were always so dark and grim. And Moe was this ancient man with a little boy’s haircut. But Larry? I don't get Larry. He's strange. He's sort of the blank guy in the middle." The whole thing seemed rather speculative at the time, but it appears the tides have apparently changed. The Boston Globe now reports that the Farrelly Brothers has not »

Giamatti Distances Himself From Three Stooges Rumours

23 June 2009 9:20 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Paul Giamatti has dismissed rumours he's set to replace Sean Penn in upcoming comedy The Three Stooges after he was tipped for the role by co-director Bobby Farrelly himself.

Oscar winner Penn quit the project last week (begs15Jun09), in addition to forthcoming drama Cartel, after announcing he was taking a break from his movie career to spend more time with his family and work on his troubled marriage to actress Robin Wright Penn.

Giamatti emerged the favourite to step into the role of Larry Fine alongside Benicio Del Toro and Jim Carrey, after Farrelly admitted the actor would make a "sensational Larry".

However, Bobby's brother Peter Farrelly confessed they'd already offered the part to another star - although he refused to reveal any names.

The Sideways star's representative has also denied Giamatti will be signing on to the movie project, telling E! News columnist Marc Malkin there have been no talks between the two parties. »

Apparently, after Sean Penn dropped out of The Three Stooges movie (as Larry Fine opposite Benicio Del Toro and Jim Carrey), Paul Giamatti might be the actor to take his place. When asked about it, director Bobby Farrelly mused that Giamatti would be a "sensational Larry". Sean Penn is one of my favorite actors so it's tough to say that anyone will be able to successfully fill his shoes. That said, Paul Giamatti has a kind, wise face and that makes me feel more comfortable. Does... »

Sean Penn Backs Out of 'Three Stooges', 'Cartel'

17 June 2009 12:05 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Sean Penn is taking a break from Hollywood to focus on his family, the upshot being that he has backed out of both The Three Stooges and Cartel.

Peter and Bobby Farrelly (Dumb & Dumber) have spent the better part of a decade trying to get Stooges off the ground, and in March they were able to cast Penn as Larry, with Jim Carrey as Curly and Benicio del Toro as Moe.

Meanwhile, MGM and the Farrellys, who wrote the script and are set to direct, need to decide whether they will wait for Penn or seek to find a new actor.

Time and availability remain the primary issues: Stooges was eyeing a late August start date, and MGM has slotted it for a 2010 release. If the studio does wait, it could risk losing Carrey and del Toro. On the other hand, many actors are vying to replace Penn.

Sean Penn no longer a Stooge

Sean Penn has made the decision to take a year off from acting to focus on his family. Because of this, he has withdrawn from two projects he committed to following his Oscar win for Milk. First was the action thriller, Cartel. The movie would have seen the Oscar winner as a dad who goes to Mexico to protect his son from the drug cartel that killed his wife. Asper Leth is directing the Universal/Imagine film, which will begin filming in the fall as long as the studio is able to strike a deal with one of the actors on their list who might replace Penn. Second is the Farrelly Brothers’ The Three Stooges film. Peter and Bobby Farrelly are currently reviewing their short list to refill the role of Larry. The Farrellys’ list includes Paul Giamatti, Simon Pegg, Zach Galifanakis, and Larry David to join Jim Carrey as »

Sean Penn Unexpectedly Withdraws from Two Projects

17 June 2009 1:43 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Variety reports that Sean Penn announced he will pull out of two projects for unspecified personal reasons related to family.

Penn will no longer star in Peter Farrelly and Bobby Farrelly's The Three Stooges, in which he was to play Larry opposite Jim Carrey as Curly and Benicio Del Toro as Moe. He also withdrew from Cartel. In the Asger Leth-directed drama, scripted by Peter Craig, a man struggles to protect his son after his wife is killed in the world of Mexican drug cartels.

It is unclear how long Penn will be on hiatus. Prior to the announcement, he had already completed two other projects, which should still see release. The first is Fair Game, the Doug Liman-directed biopic based on the memoir of CIA agent Valerie Plame (with Naomi Watts in the starring role). The other is The Tree of Life, which stars Brad Pitt »
