Why do we not talk about “The Adventurers?” To be fair, this could be asked about many of Ringo Lam's films. For a filmmaker widely considered to be one of the “Big Three” of Hong Kong action along with Tsui Hark and John Woo, only a few of Lam's films are discussed frequently outside of cinephile circles. His work tended to be jagged, foregoing Woo's elegance and Hark's epic scope in favor of open-wound intensity. A film like “School on Fire,” for example, functions more as social issue drama than action flick. This nervy, uncompromising style perhaps lacked the slick commercial appeal of his contemporaries, which would explain why some of his relatively minor B-Sides tend to be left out of the conversation. This is a shame, because “The Adventurers” is an admirably over-the-top revenge thriller that deserves to be seen.

Do you ever remember the old conduct of your adventure books that used to be so popular? You know, the ones where you select an option and have to go-to another page to continue the story. Watching “Dr Wai” brings back those memories given the wrap around narrative. Throw in a blatant nod to Indiana Jones and there is a lot of nostalgia at play. Continuing with the reviews of Eureka Entertainment's release of the “Heroes and Villains” Jet Li box set, it's time to dig out the explorer's hat, select follow-this-adventure and see if this feature is a lost treasure or deserves to be lost in the midst of time.

With the onset of movie streaming platforms you can get a bit nostalgic for the days of roaming around the video store searching for something to watch and a little element of added mystery as to what you were watching, as the internet had yet to take hold. For many of those of us who lived that era, our introduction to the world of Hong Kong Action cinema was the documentary “Cinema of Vengeance”. Among the many clips it showed (and made you want to find the film in question) was “Tiger Cage 2”. When I did indeed track down a copy of “Tiger Cage 2” in my local HMV, it had bestowed on it's cover an image of Donnie Yen wielding a sword and a swift purchase soon made. At this time, any new movie was an adventure and little was I to know that I was about to...

Michelle Yeoh has just won the Academy Award for best actress with her hysterically good performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once”, making Oscar history as first Asian woman winning that category. It has been a long way since the year 1937, when white actress Luise Rainer won the same category for sporting a “yellowface” and play a Chinese villager in “The Good Earth.” But the Malaysian-born actress had already built up a reputation in the 1980s and '90s as Hong Kong's kick-ass action star.

Much like the Prom Night series, or in martial arts cinema the later additions to the Police Story franchise, the Tiger Cage films don’t feature ongoing characters or tell linked stories. The only real tie is that they share cast members and are all martial arts cop movies directed by Yuen Woo-Ping.
The Films
Tiger Cage is about an anti-drug team in the Hong Kong Police force in which there may be corruption, with potentially several of the task force members working with and supplying dealers. Simon Yam plays the head of the unit, while Jacky Cheung, Carol ‘DoDo’ Cheng, Bryan Leung and Donnie Yen are among the detectives he commands. The tone is largely quite serious, and that’s the film’s main downfall, because it’s not something that Yuen Woo-Ping does especially well. In particular, he’s prone to letting his cast overact. Considering that it took up to five directors to finish filming the first “Swordsman” after King Hu left the project, it was indeed a miracle that it turned out to be a success and a trend setter for the many new wave wuxia movies to follow. This visually arresting sequel, again produced by Tsui Hark but now directed by Ching Siu Tung, it’s a different beast all together. However, the theme of swordsmen retiring from the jianghu (martial world) and live a peaceful life is still the main focus. The film went on to win William Cheung Suk Ping and Yu Ka On the Best Costume and Makeup Design award at the 12th Hong Kong Film Awards in 1993.

It’s not often that a Sammo Hung movie gets overlooked, but in 1993 and with the New Wave of action cinema at it’s apex, “Blade of Fury” was one that in retrospect probably doesn’t get talked about as much as you would think. The Producer Lo Wei has less consistency and, let’s be honest, even his Bruce Lee pictures are not exactly the best directed. So, watching this is an experience as who will be the bigger influence on the product and stamp their identity upon it. Whilst it is certainly a flawed piece, it has enough moments within that make it worthy of rediscovery.

Do you remember sitting down in the holidays and watching on television one of those all start cast epics such as “Around the World in 80 Days” that frequented Hollywood in the 1960’s. Well now imagine that with a cast of Hong Kong’s finest from the 1980’s and throw in a lot of martial arts amidst the comedy. Now imagine it in the style of a western-only set in the Orient. Sammo Hung certainly liked variety in his directorial career and at his creative peak in the late 1980’s, came up with this polar opposite to the more vicious war epic “Eastern Condors”. A more family friendly, action filled entertainer that throws everything into the mix and finds most of it sticking.

A year after his magnificent performance in “The Story of Woo Viet”, Chow Yun-fat played another kind of Vietnamese refugee as Nguyen, one who is a contract killer for the “Eagles” while also working as a special effects technician in movies. According to the Hk New Wave book, “This film was made for a western audience and was not released in Hong Kong…” The b-movie, horror/exploitation Hollywood aesthetics are indeed, quite intense here. Let us take things from the beginning though.
Nguyen leads a rather harsh life, but his dream of bringing his family to Hong Kong keeps him going, despite the violence that derives from his actions, but also seems to find him against his will. The second axis of the script revolves around TV reporter Vicky Lee, who is investigating a series of murders and an apparent gas attack on an elementary school. Eventually,...

Building up on the success of the two previous installments, Sammo Hung and producer Eric Tsang really went overboard with this one, which this time, takes place mostly in Pattaya, Thailand and features even more explosive (literally and metaphorically) action scenes. The most impressive fact, however, about the film, is its uncanny cast, which seems to feature the majority of the creme de la creme of Hk action cinema, to say the least. Apart from the two aforementioned and the foreigners Richard Norton and Yasuaki Kurata, who form the main villain trio with Fat Chung, the movie also includes Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao, Richard Ng, Kiu Wai Mai, Stanley Fung, Sibelle Hu, John Sham, Rosamund Kwan, Andy Lau, Kara Hui, Michelle Yeoh and Charlie Chin, while in non-named credits as thugs, we stumble upon Dick Wei, Philip Ko and Lau Kar-win, to name the ones with the most significant roles.

In cinema, we often talk about genres and sub genres that unfold from within them. Many debates ensue as some movies defy such pigeonholing and Hong Kong cinema delights in often mixing in as many as possible in one production to cause categorizing mayhem. “Casino Raiders” is one such enigma. Whilst on the surface part of the gambling film sub genre, there are elements of heroic bloodshed thrown in as well as traces of neo noir. When done wrong, this cocktail can be a problematic, lacking an identity as a whole, whilst failIng to succeed as either one thing or another. When it clicks, then you wonder why no one has tried it before. It’s a line that is very hard to tread.

Gambling movies are one of the most popular movie genres worldwide. The high-octane, drama-filled genre has given us some of pop culture’s most influential and memorable films. The inherent drama, risk, and fast-paced storytelling that comes with gambling-themed movies have made them a fan favorite worldwide.
Gambling movies have become globally popular, mostly due to Hollywood’s take on the genre. Movies like Ocean’s Eleven, Rounders, and Casino Royale have gained international recognition and have given fans some of Hollywood’s biggest classics.
While Hollywood seems to have perfected the making of gambling-themed movies, the Asian movie industry has also contributed to the genre’s success on the big screen. Gambling movies have grown in popularity over the years in Asia, and the genre has given the industry some of it’s best and most critically acclaimed movies.
Let’s take a look at the four of the very best Asian gambling movies.

When it comes to making features like this one, i love the idea of coming up with my own personal “100 Great Kung Fu Movies” of all time. It is tough choosing just 100 because you know there are many more great Kung Fu movies that are not on the list.
I have decided that to make the list, a movie must have a few hand to hand moments during fight scenes in the movies chosen. If for example its mainly sword play with one fight scene hand to hand it won’t make the list. Its old school “style” Kung Fu movies, not modern day settings.
I understand everyone will have their own personal favorites and some may not agree with my list and that’s fine because it’s nice to have different opinions on this genre which keeps it fresh and alive when having good debates.
Anyway, thank you...

What we lack more and more these days are epic fight scenes in the final part of kung Fu/Martial Art movies. We have seen less and less one on one fight scenes in the final battle over the past 15-20 years, which is a shame but we have seen recently a few flicks bringing that winning formula back.
I want to name a few of my favorite end fight scenes and please feel free to comment below, your favorite fight scenes and maybe they will be added to the future features. I only add fight scenes which i can find the clips for on youtube, so some classics might not be added to the lists.

It’s time again for that most uniquely Hong Kong of genres, the ghost comedy romance, with the re-release of the 1991 outing “Pretty Ghost”. The film, which apparently also went under the bizarrely inaccurate title of “Alien Wife” (the film features no aliens, and no wives), marked the directorial debut of Teddy Chan, who went on the helm the likes of “Purple Storm”, the Jackie Chan vehicle “The Accidental Spy”, and the forthcoming “Bodyguards and Assassins”. Offering the usual mix of slapstick gags, ghostly goings on and improbable human-spirit relations, the film handed Tony Leung Ka Fai (“Election”) an early, if not particularly dignified leading role, and boasted a couple of gorgeous leading ladies in the shapely forms of Rosamund Kwan (best known for her roles in the Jet Li “Once Upon a Time in China” films) and Ellen Chan (a popular actress at the time, who also featured in...

Prolific Hong Kong filmmaker Tsui Hark (''Peking Opera Blues'') and youthful action star Jet Li (''The Legend of Fong Sai Yuk'') reteam for the third installment of their series of films on all-purpose, turn-of-the-century Chinese folk hero Wong Fey Hong.
Kicking its way into Laemmle's Monica for a week starting today, ''Once Upon a Time in China III'' offers all the usual ups and downs of the Hong Kong New Wave. The plot is confusing and the characters routinely developed, while the ambitious production (including scenes filmed at the Forbidden City on the mainland) is marred by poor post-dubbing and unexceptional special effects.
More money than ever appears to have been lavished on the production (still only a fraction of a mainstream Hollywood movie's budget), so it's disappointing that overall ''China III'' signals no significant advancement in the evolution of Hong Kong films.
Mixing comedy and large-scale action scenes, ''China III'' picks up the Fey Hong saga as he arrives in turbulent Beijing at the same time the conniving Empress Dowager, with Russian and Japanese co-conspirators, hatches an assassination plot. Reprising their roles from the first two films in the series are Fey Hong's love interest (Rosamund Kwan) and sidekick (Max Mok).
Equally adept at goofy romantic comedy and complex fight scenes, Hark works in a satisfying rivalry between Fey Hong and Club Foot (actor unidentified in credits provided), a rival champion in a planned kung fu tournament.
The foreign intrigues are far less interesting, and the romantic complications posed by Kwan's character flirting with a dashing Russian diplomat are not effectively woven into the narrative. Usually the most reliably entertaining aspect of Hong Kong commercial cinema, ''China III's'' fight scenes are not as breathtaking as one expects from Hark and star Li.
