Hollywood Power Lawyer Craig Emanuel is leaving Paul Hastings to move in-house to work for longtime client Ryan Murphy.
Emanuel, who has been a mainstay on THR‘s annual spotlight of the top attorneys in the entertainment industry, has also worked with the likes of Tom Hanks, Daniel Day Lewis, Julie Delpy, Robert Rodriguez, Luke Davies and Tony Gilroy, as well as companies including Msg Entertainment (Madison Square Garden) and Animal Logic.
“While the decision to leave my clients and Paul Hastings has not been an easy one, knowing they are in such great hands with my colleagues has helped make the transition an easier one,” said Emanuel in a statement.

Ryan Murphy, in a letter from his attorney to the leadership of the Writers Guild of America, threatened litigation against Warren Leight, an East Coast strike captain and Strike Rules Compliance Committee member who has subsequently forfeited those positions.
The flap started June 21, when Leight, a former Law & Order: Svu showrunner and playwright, alleged in a tweet that crewmembers on Murphy’s American Horror Story had told him that “they’ll be blackballed in Murphy-land” if they don’t cross the Writers Guild’s picket lines. The families featured in the doc include a trans/queer family with five children in Iowa who must find a new community after being expelled from their church; a gay Black couple with a young daughter who test the line of acceptance in Nebraska; a lesbian couple who is homeschooling their bullied son on a farm in Kansas; a gay teacher in Ohio who is creating a safe space for Lgbtqi+ students; and a couple in Minnesota that is struggling to rebuild their families after their transitions.

A24 acquired U.S. rights to Nicole Holofcener’s new comedy “Beth & Don,” starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, at AFM.
Last week, Variety exclusively revealed that Louis-Dreyfus and Holofcener would reunite for the movie after their 2013 hit “Enough Said.”
Louis-Dreyfus stars as Beth, a New York novelist in an unbelievably happy marriage to Don, who loves her and supports her in every way. According to the official longline, the film’s plot kicks off when, one day, Beth overhears Don admitting that he hasn’t liked her writing in years and it threatens to undo all that’s good in their lives. Written and directed by Holofcener, “Beth & Don” is set to begin shooting in early 2022.

In another big deal out of the American Film Market, A24 has landed domestic rights to Nicole Holofcener’s next film Beth & Don, with Julia Louis-Dreyfus set to star. The pic will be written and directed by Holofcener and will begin shooting in early 2022. UTA Independent Film Group negotiated the sale of the rights to A24.

Ryan Murphy is expanding his “American Story” universe with two new spinoff limited series, “American Sports Story” and “American Love Story,” and development on a Studio 54-themed fourth season of “American Crime Story,” FX revealed Friday ahead of its virtual panels at the Television Critics Association press tour.
