Cillian Murphy recently had some choice words for his film Red Eye (watch it Here), a Wes Craven-directed thriller that was released back in 2005. But he wasn’t entirely negative. So that got me thinking: Is Red Eye a good film? Or is it more in the so bad it’s good category? I personally saw Red Eye in theaters and have always had a soft spot for it. But if Oppenheimer‘s own Cillian Murphy has an issue with it, maybe it’s worth a second gander. So let’s see whether it’s good, bad, or somewhere in between as we revisit Red Eye in the video embedded above!
Scripted by Carl Ellsworth, who crafted the story with Dan Foos, Red Eye has the following synopsis: In the wake of her grandmother’s funeral, hotel manager Lisa Reisert is waiting to fly back home when she meets charming Jackson Rippner at check-in.

Remakes have always been and will always be a tricky proposition. You could have something as pure and wonderful as 1982’s The Thing, which is objectively better than the revered Howard Hawks and Christian Nyby version, but be trapped in purgatory for way too long before it is decided that its proper and loved. There’s a bunch that are better in different ways or at least thoroughly enjoyable in their own right like John Carpenter’s masterpiece, Philip Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and of course David Cronenberg’s The Fly. While you can argue the horror vs sci fi merits of any of these movies, their quality can’t be disputed. When it comes down to what you can or can’t remake, I think the gloves are off at this point. There’s very few sacred cows left and sometimes a remake can help. Something...

Wes Craven’s The Last House on the Left is regarded by many as a classic of the horror genre, and by others as one of the most vile films committed to celluloid. The 1972 film remained blacklisted in the UK, where it was banned for nearly 30 years (finally seeing an uncut release in 2008). In 2006 Rogue Pictures made the shock announcement that Craven had agreed to produce a remake of his film. At the time, many people, myself included, were worried that any remake would have to be watered down for modern audiences – especially when the majority of horror remakes at the time were being released as PG-13. Russell Crowe stars as a psycho trucker in Unhinged, an exciting thriller from director Derrick Borte. Given that it’s one of the first mainstream films to receive an actual theatrical release during the Covid-19 pandemic, it’s likely to be one of the best films you’ll see in a cinema all year.
Unhinged opens with Crowe’s unnamed and clearly troubled trucker bashing someone’s door in with a massive hammer before brutally murdering everyone inside. The next time we see him, he’s on the motorway, where he doesn’t take too kindly to being honked at by single mother Rachel (Caren Pistorius) and her young son (Gabriel Bateman). Crowe gives Rachel the opportunity to apologise, but when she refuses, he goes full-blown psycho, stealing...

Known as the Russell Crowe road-rage movie, Unhinged hits theaters — or at least the ones that dare to open stateside — on August 21st. Is it worth going masked and still risk infection to sit in a poorly ventilated multiplex, no matter how socially distanced, to see Crowe play demolition derby in daytime traffic? It’s your call. Even marking on a B-movie curve, Unhinged is running on empty.
All due respect to the Gladiator Oscar winner, who tries mightily to bring something relatably human to his role as a killing machine in a pickup truck.

Chicago – America is at a boiling point. The pandemic, the election, the divisiveness and general atmosphere has reformulated us in many profound ways. Director Derrick Borte explores those themes in the new release “Unhinged,” which also has the distinction of being the first film to be distributed to all open nationwide theaters on Friday, August 21st.
Russell Crowe is Tom, a victim of his own desperation and anger. When a put-upon single mom named Rachel (Caren Pistorius) honks at him during a traffic stop, it starts a road rage incident, that escalates into a revenge scenario that becomes increasingly violent. Crowe puts some nuance into the unhinged character, and director Borte follows through on the themes of citizens up against it, predicting the divisions that have been fought during the pandemic.

Unhinged opens with Russell Crowe–identified only in the credits as “Man”–sitting in his pick-up truck outside a suburban house, staring at the tiny match he’s lit, his face impassive and his eyes narrowed. Abruptly he gets out of the truck, grabs an axe and a can of accelerant, and breaks down the door, cutting the man and woman inside to death before burning down the house.
The camera watches all this from a slight distance, as if director Derrick Borte (The Joneses) wants us to view these events, at least at first, objectively. We don’t know who this Man is, we don’t know who he’s killed or what has pushed him to commit these horrendous acts we’ve just witnessed, although we’ll learn a bit more later on.

Despite of His Rage: Borte Bottlenecks with Brutal Thriller
Road rage finds a suitable vehicle in the latest film from director Derrick Borte, Unhinged, which finds Russell Crowe in terrifying form as a white man on a vicious rampage with nothing to lose. If this sounds somewhat familiar, it bears striking resemblance to Joel Schumacher’s prescient drama Falling Down (1993), though Carl Ellsworth’s script collapses the complexities of that character study into a roid rage retrofit.
Speckled with moments of sometimes shocking violence, Borte has concocted a contemporary version of logical extremes, even if it sometimes marks his film as the progeny of 1970s exploitation cinema.…...

Over a staggered series of pandemic-delayed release dates, “Unhinged” has been consistently hyped as the film that will bring the dormant theatrical scene back to life — the one that, as other major releases have either postponed themselves into the distant whenever or bit the bullet and premiered online, has stuck to its guns as a summer big-screen experience. That’s no small amount of self-imposed pressure on a film that, on paper at least, doesn’t look all that prepossessing. An honestly trashy B-thriller that is by now less widely known by its title than as “you know, the Russell Crowe road rage movie,” it doesn’t exactly seem too momentous a film event for VOD.
And yet, five pulpy minutes into “Unhinged,” you kind of see what they were waiting for. Dispensing with context or polite foreplay, Derrick Borte’s film begins with a bloody, punch-drunk doozy of a prologue: Crowe,...

Update: As expected with Tenet‘s big move to Aug. 12, and Mulan‘s to Aug. 21, Solstice Studios’ first theatrical release Unhinged will now open July 31. If Sony/Tri-Star’s Broken Hearts Gallery moves to Aug. 7, Unhinged will then be the first fresh wide release for exhibition after being shutdown since mid-March. Again, it’s not expected for AMC and Regal to be open in mid-July with Covid-19 cases spiking and New York and LA markets not even open yet. We’re waiting on official word from AMC and Regal. We hear Cinemark is proceeding with opening 75 theaters next weekend.
Unhinged initially was expected to open over the Independence Day stretch next weekend, but then moved to July 10 after Tenet jumped from July 17 to July 31.
There’s also Lionsgate’s Antebellum on Aug. 21, sharing space with Mulan. Gotta figure that title moves.
So far the immediate ‘summer’ calendar for wide releases is looking like this below.

For children of the ‘80s, Gremlins holds a special place in the heart. Director Joe Dante’s allegedly wholesome family entertainment, produced by Steven Spielberg at the height of his Amblin powers no less, was actually a deceptively sinister little film. It was for all ages, to be sure, but in its heart, it was subverting its Frank Capra-esque iconography by having the Gremlins turn into PG movie monsters. And if Gremlins 3 had happened, screenwriter Carl Ellsworth promises it would’ve leaned into that sinister quality while also being every bit as nostalgia-drenched as Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
“The last time I touched [the script] is now going on three years ago,” Ellsworth told ComingSoon. “I was so excited to do it. I got the chance to work with Chris, and I loved the story we came up with. I’m so bummed that it hasn’t seen the light of day yet.

“Unhinged” boasts a terrific trailer, but nobody would have picked this unassuming low-budget genre effort to be the first post-pandemic major new release of 2020. Newbie theatrical distributor Solstice Studios is making a bold move with its debut release: The company is opening this $33-million psychological thriller, starring Russell Crowe as a man with serious road rage, on as many available screens as possible on July 1, 2020.
At that time, most theaters will be tentatively ramping up with repertory fare. Why on earth would anyone throw this modest entry — one that looks like prime VOD fodder — into the start of an uncertain return to indoor theatergoing?
The answer is part desperation, part opportunism. No fledgling production or distribution company plans on launching its first new movie during a pandemic. As Mark Gill, the Solstice president and CEO, looked at his options, in a world of unknown knowns, he figured, he might as...

Russell Crowe gets stuck in an extremely over-the-top bout of road rage in the new trailer for Unhinged. The movie is expected to arrive July 1st and is being touted in a press release as “the first new film to open in America’s movie theaters in accordance with state public-health department safety guidelines.”
The film is centered around a terrifying cat-and-mouse chase between Crowe’s character, an unnamed stranger, and a woman named Rachel (Caren Pistorius), who provokes the stranger’s ire when trying to get around him in a traffic jam.

Russell Crowe stars in this first trailer for Unhinged, the first new film to open in America’s movie theaters in accordance with state public health department safety guidelines on July 1.
Unhinged is a psychological thriller starring Academy Award-winner Russell Crowe from Carl Ellsworth, the writer of Red Eye and Disturbia and Lisa Ellzey, the producer of Warrior and Kingdom of Heaven. It takes an ordinary, everyday incident to its most terrifying conclusion in telling the story of a mother who leans on her horn at the wrong time, to the wrong guy. “Road rage” doesn’t begin to describe what he’s about to do to her and everyone she knows.
The film is directed by Derrick Borte (American Dreamer) and also stars Caren Pistorius, Gabriel Bateman, Jimmi Simpson and Austin P. McKenzie.

If everything goes according to plan, “Unhinged,” a thriller with Russell Crowe, will be the first wide release film to debut in U.S. theaters when and if exhibition chains re-open in July.
The film will bow on July 1, preempting Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet,” currently scheduled to bow on July 17, by more than two weeks. “Unhinged” is the first release from Solstice Studios, a new independent movie company that numbers veteran producer Mark Gill (“Olympus Has Fallen”) among its founders.
It’s a bold, albeit risky bet by Solstice, given that the coronavirus has led to widespread theater closures. Some states are beginning to lift restrictions and allow more businesses to open, and theaters are starting to welcome customers in places like Texas, but it’s still unclear if major markets such as Los Angeles and New York City will be back in business by July. Breaking: Solstice Studios wants to be the first to test the movie theater marketplace, setting a July 1 release date for the Russell Crowe psychological thriller Unhinged. The indie production/distribution company has moved the film from its September 4 release date right into the July 4 weekend, a moment where they expect theaters to be open and full of repertory programming. Unhinged will likely be the first to test the waters as theaters try to rebound from the crushing pandemic, and utilize the safety playbooks that Nato and all exhibitors are finalizing to restore customer confidence that it will be once again safe to venture back into a movie theater.
“When we green lit this film, I probably figured that July 4th weekend and Christmas would be the two least likely slots,” said Solstice chairman/CEO Mark Gill. “We were sitting on September 4 and then Covid-19 happened, and A Quiet Place 2...

Mark Gill’s Solstice Studios is planning to release its first film, a thriller starring Russell Crowe called “Unhinged,” and it plans to do so at the start of July in the hopes that it will be one of the first films people can see if theaters reopen widely.
Solstice Studios has set a theatrical release date for “Unhinged” on July 1, the distributor announced Tuesday. “We made this decision after extensive consultation with the National Association of Theaters and leading theater chains,” Mark Gill, president and CEO of Solstice Studios, said in a statement. “Those conversations have convinced us there is a way to meet pent up...

Cut off Russell Crowe in traffic at your own peril!
That’s the takeaway from the first look at “Unhinged,” an upcoming thriller that stars the Oscar-winning “Gladiator” actor as a man who takes road rage to frightening new levels. Crowe appears in the Solstice Studios release alongside Caren Pistorius, who portrays Rachel, a mother who hits the horn at the exact wrong moment. In the first look image, Crowe smolders with the fury of a thousand Maximuses.
“The mark of a great film is one that both entertains and sparks conversation,” director Derrick Borte said. “I believe, in a very terrifying way, ‘Unhinged’ does exactly that.”
Production on the film wraps on Sunday in New Orleans. “Unhinged,” planned for a third quarter 2020 release, marks Solstice Studios’ first production since launching last October. The studio aims to produce between three and five movies per year, with most films carrying budgets between $20 million and $80 million.

Solstice Studios has acquired “Unhinged,” a psychological thriller from “Disturbia” screenwriter Carl Ellsworth and “Warrior” producer Lisa Ellzey. The studio is currently out to directors. The script revolves around an extreme case of “road rage.” It’s the story of a mother whose decision to hit her horn upsets the wrong guy and leads to some very violent consequences.
It’s one of the first projects acquired by Solstice, a newcomer to the studio space. It launched in 2018 with the goal of producing three to five films a year that are geared at global audiences and acquiring an additional two to four films annually. Solstice releases will typically carry budgets between $30 million to $80 million. Major studios are steering clear of films in that price range in favor of making even costlier superhero films, leaving a hole that Solstice would like to fill.

While there’s no shortage of sequels/remakes/reboots to ’80s movies these days, Gremlins 3 has yet to come into fruition — though not for a lack of trying. Those involved, including producer Chris Columbus, have attempted to get the project off the ground for a few years now, at least, to no avail. But they are persistent. According to Gremlins star Zack Galligan, Columbus, Warner Bros. and Steven Spielberg all want it to happen, and Columbus has been “aggressively working” to make it a reality.
Galligan revealed the update to Bleeding Cool, where he stressed that the film will be a sequel, not a reboot, and will be set in modern day, following a formula similar to Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Over the years there have been a few updates on Gremlins 3, and if producer Chris Columbus has his way it's going to happen eventually. During a recent interview with Bleeding Cool, Gremlins star Zack Galligan offered an update on the film, saying that Warner Bros., Columbus, and Steven Spielberg all want it to happen. He also says that Columbus has been aggressively working on it. Here's what he had to say:
"I think you can tell what’s happening with Gremlins 3 the same way you could tell with Gremlins 2. It’s the same people and they tend to work the same way. There is a huge time gap but it’s Warner Bros, Spielberg and Chris Columbus. Now, Chris Columbus didn’t have anything to do with Gremlins 2 – because by his own admission he didn’t see a franchise. He kind of regrets it I believe,...
Zach Galligan confirms that Gremlins 3 is still coming - and that it's taking a Jurassic World-style approach...
Gremlins star Zach Galligan has been at London's brilliant Prince Charles Cinema for the past two nights, for the venue's seasonal screenings of the first Gremlins film. And as such, he's been doing Q&As, that have revealed fresh details about the forthcoming planned Gremlins 3 movie.
The last we heard of it was that original writer Chris Columbus was involved, along with Red Eye scribe Carl Ellsworth. Columbus had said earlier in the year that he was looking to Jj Abrams' Star Trek reboot for inspiration. But now it seems that the success of Jurassic World has taught a lesson or two.
"It's not going to be a reboot. It will not be a remake in any way, shape or form", Galligan said. He added that...
