It’s been a decade since Gregg Araki’s arresting coming-of-age examination of the ramifications of child molestation debuted at the Venice Film Festival in 2004 and the devastating remnants are still lingering. Despite its off-putting subject matter, Mysterious Skin proved to be a near universal critical hit that brought Araki back to the fore, launched the auteurist acting career of Brady Corbet and redirected Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s in the wake of his childhood gig on 3rd Rock from the Sun to much more serious adult cinema. Told from the perspective of two boys who are ripped from childhood by their kiddy league baseball coach, he director’s impeccable sensitivity to the emotional nuance of novelist Scott Heim’s heartbreaking semi-autobiographical story continues to resonate as a means of reckoning with the residual effects of abuse.

It’s another jam-packed week of DVD and Blu-ray releases, here’s the rundown of what’s available to buy from today, July 11th 2011.
Pick Of The Week:
Slaughter High (DVD)
For Marty, School Days were the worst days of his life… When the alumni of an all-American high school make a trip to attend a class reunion, they reconnect with their pasts in ways more bloody and fatal than they could possibly imagine in the 80s slasher classic Slaughter High. On arrival, they discover the school shuttered and in disrepair, as if the reunion were just a ruse to drag them back. Still, the old pupils decide to break in and celebrate anyway. A deadly error considering that Marty, the nerd whose teenage life they made a living hell, is lurking in the dank, dark corridors, waiting to bring fear, torment and slicing, dicing murder to each and every one of them.

Stars: Ed Harris, Chase Ellison, Molly Parker, Daniel Roebuck, Randy Orton, Daniel Yelsky, Alexander Walters, Mia Rose Frampton | Written and Directed by Mike Pavone
Set in the 60’s, a time when a social revolution was beginning to change the mind sets of society, comes a feel good story about an inspirational teacher, Mr Simon (Ed Harris – The Truman Show, Apollo 13, Nixon, The Way Back) who instils in his pupils, a new way of thinking that will change their lives forever.
One kid, whose outlook on life takes on a whole new meaning, is 12 year old Andy Nichol (Chase Ellison – Tooth Fairy). A bright student, Andy is put to the test when his English teacher Mr. Simon pairs him up on a project with the school’s biggest outcast, Stanley, also affectionately known as Big G because of his large frame, facial features and ginger hair.

A film produced by WWE that's got nothing to do with wrestling, That's What I Am stars Ed Harris. But is it any good?
Newsflash: bullying is wrong, and the 1960s were a time of rosy-tinted wonder. If either of these seem revelatory, then That's What I Am may be for you. If not, don't bother.
Written and directed by Michael Pavone and produced by the WWE Studios production company, That's What I Am isn't a wrestling spectacle. Instead, it's a dumb, blithely simple drama that is all moral and no content.
Andy (Chase Ellison) is a kid on the verge of teenhood who is assigned a collaborative piece of schoolwork with Big G (Alexander Walters), a loner who happens to be tall, supposedly ugly, and, horror of horrors, ginger. At first, Andy is anxious, as every social capital-conscious boy in an American school movie is, to be paired with such an unpopular classmate,...

When a film starts off with a quote on a blank screen, usually it’s intriguing. With “That’s What I Am,” this is almost the case. The first thing viewers see is simple text on a black screen stating, “It has often been said that children are cruel.” What ruins it? The narrator reads it for you and starts his almost ceaseless monologue, giving no time for the audience to dwell on this introductory quote and determine its significance.
Set in the 1960s, “That’s What I Am,” depicts many societal obstacles while keeping an air of innocence, using the story of an eighth-grade boy as the main context. As narrator, Andy Nichol (played as a youth by Chase Ellison) reflects on his life in junior high...

Title: That’s What I Am Director: Mike Pavone Starring: Ed Harris, Chase Ellison, Molly Parker, Daniel Roebuck, Randy Orton, Daniel Yelsky, Alexander Walters, Mia Rose Frampton, Amy Madigan The fact that actual personal experience informs a movie’s narrative flavor doesn’t, of course, guarantee its quality in any way, shape or form — a fact reaffirmed by writer-director Mike Pavone’s “That’s What I Am”, an awkward mish-mash of observational coming-of-age cliches and half-baked moralizing that feels like a bloated, not particularly well sketched episode of “The Wonder Years”. Set in California during the 1960s, the film centers on 12-year-old Andy (Chase Ellison), a bright but small eighth-grade kid whose favorite teacher, Mr. Simon...

Hey, you! Did you know that WWE isn't just in the wrestling business anymore? They also make films, like the upcoming That's What I Am. But unlike previous releases that place your favorite violent male soap opera stars front and center, this new flick has enlisted respected thespian Ed Harris to its cause.
Filling the wrestler quota for this WWE Studios release will be third generation grappler Randy Orton. The film is largely set in a junior high school, so given the size diferences between the Viper and his costars, we probably won't be seeing any RKOs, but we're hoping that Orton will put at least a couple 8th graders out of commission with some well-placed punts. Fingers crossed.
Randy Orton in an earlier, stranger cut of the film.

The 1960s were a simpler time: geeks were geeks, teachers were role models and professional wrestlers didn't co-star in family oriented indie flicks. But this is the 21st Century -- and nothing proves this point more than the brand new trailer for "That's What I Am."
Here's the dilly: produced by WWE -- you know, the wrestling people -- "That's What I Am" is a heartfelt coming-of-age parable starring Ed Harris as an earnest English teacher who takes a regular kid (Chase Ellison) and a jug-eared pariah (Alexander Waters) under his wing during the mid-60s and teaches them the importance of not being douchebags. And, oh yeah, WWE star Randy Orton is also in it.
Oh, how times have changed.
Of course, this isn't the first film WWE has put together, but most of their earlier efforts had a bit more testosterone (see: "The Scorpion King," "The Marine") and a bit less,...

[1] A new trailer has been released for WWE Studios' That's What I Am, starring Ed Harris, Amy Madigan, Molly Parker -- and professional wrestler Randy Orton. Yup, it's that WWE. The gargantuan sports entertainment corporation has been producing features through its filmmaking arm since 2002, including The Scorpion King (as co-producers), The Marine, and last year's Legendary. That's What I Am looks like a bit of a departure from the company's earlier projects, in that it doesn't seem to feature much in the way of action or wrestling. Watch the trailer after the jump. That's What I Am stars Chase Ellison as Andy, a typical eighth grader who learns lessons about courage and tolerance when he's assigned to work with an unpopular geek (Alexander Walters). WWE Studios has been producing a steady stream of big, dumb action schlock since ’02, their only real winner being Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s starring vehicle, The Rundown. To be fair, they co-produced to Universal’s Strike Entertainment; I imagine someone had the good sense to lock Vince McMahon in a closet during the lion’s share of that film. The wrestling organization’s studio wing has in recent years been playing it up to the PG-13 crowd to cast a wider demographic net, and thus their film library has seen some variation from wooden wrestlers blowing shit up and punching faces. Basically, WWE Studios wants you to know they have a heart– and so we get That’s What I Am, television writer/director Michael Pavone’s big screen feature debut. That’s What I Am is the story of Andy Nichol (Chase Ellison), a middle of the road student in his last year of junior...

The kiddies deserve some tamer terror for the Halloween season, and that's precisely what Nickelodeon is scaring up with its original movie The Boy Who Cried Werewolf. Not to be confused with the 1973 flick of the same name about a young boy who discovers his father is a hippie-hating werewolf. Though I am a little confused given this Boy Who Cried Werewolf is actually about a teenage girl who turns into a tween wolf.
Victoria Justice of the popular Nickelodeon program "Victorious" stars in The Boy Who Cried Werewolf alongside Brooke Shields, once a teen superstar herself, now playing the creepy caretaker of a Romanian castle.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson stars as Derek Thompson, a slightly past-it ice hockey player whose propensity for knocking out the molars of his opponents on the rink has earned him the nickname of ‘The Tooth Fairy’. He is dating single mum Carly (Ashley Judd), mother to two sprogs, Randy and Tess (Chase Ellison and Destiny Whitlock). When Derek inadvertently crushes the dreams of a young fan and nearly tells Tess that the tooth fairy doesn’t exist he is summoned to the world of fairies and sentenced to two weeks as tooth fairy duty by the fairy’s leader Lily (Mary Poppins herself, Julie Andrews); his punishment is overseen by his care-worker Tracey (Stephen Merchant).

This is a UK competition for Tooth Fairy, directed by Michael Lembeck and starring Dwayne Johnson, Judd, Stephen Merchant, Ryan Sheckler, Seth MacFarlane, Julie Andrews, Chase Ellison and Destiny Whitlock. Dwayne Johnson is the Tooth Fairy, also known as Derek Thompson, a hard-charging minor league hockey player whose nickname comes from his habit of separating opposing players from their bicuspids. When Derek discourages a youngster’s dreams, he’s sentenced to one week’s hard labour as a real tooth fairy, complete with the requisite tutu, wings and magic wand.

After The Rundown, I generally tried to give Dwayne Johnson the benefit of the doubt when it came to his future film endeavors. It was clear he had a knack for comedic timing and I was eager to let him prove himself. He still obviously has the potential to be a great comic actor, but his choice of projects since The Rundown don’t exactly instill confidence. Be Cool, Southland Tales, Doom, The Scorpion King, and The Gridiron Gang amounted to little more than disappointments that made me think I’d overestimated Dwayne’s talent from his first major outing. My enthusiasm to see him succeed even led me to offer a soft appraisal of The Game Plan a few years back, but there’s just no excusing Tooth Fairy. It reeks of poorly though out feature with a cast that can’t land parts in films of a higher caliber.

By Susan Granger - In this featherweight, family-oriented comedy, Derek Thompson (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) is an arrogant, aggressive former NFL hockey player who's now in the minor leagues and known as "The Tooth Fairy" for his brutal penchant for knocking out opponents' bicuspids and molars. Continuing his destructive cynicism off-the-ice, he blithely informs Tess (Destiny Whitlock), the young daughter of his girl-friend, Carly (Ashley Judd), that there's no real tooth fairy; it's just a fantasy.
"Tooth Fairy" (20th Century-Fox)
That infuriates Lily the Fairy-in-Chief (Julie Andrews), who magically punishes him for "first degree murder of fantasy" by turning his nickname into a real job for two weeks, or until he learns to believe in dreams. Presto! Hard-bodied Derek is prancing about in a pale pink tutu, ballerina slippers and tights with huge wings sprouting out of his back and a wand in his band. Granted, it's an amusing image.

Julie Andrews. Julie Andrews. Julie Andrews.
Ok, maybe not, but one of the few local critics who can still tolerate me told me if I said Julie Andrews name three times it would write this review. As easier as that would make life, it’s my duty to prepare the adults out there who will surely be dragged to the new Dwayne Johnson vehicle with their youngsters. Perhaps this will be looked at as a survival guide for said parents, babysitters, or older brothers and/or sisters who’ll be yanked in here on chains. Yet, there is good news on the horizon. Tooth Fairy isn’t the assault of terrible like the trailers want you to believe. Now, that’s not to say the film is anything near decent, but every now and then it allows entertainment to rear its head through, if only for a moment or two at a time.

The Tooth Fairy movie has one major theme. Allow young ones to follow their dreams. Which is just fine, if they didn't make this idea into a 101 minute uneventful movie. A simple commercial with Dwayne Johnson would have sufficed. There's no way one can justify putting their children through this misery. Allow them to follow their dreams, but do not allow them to see this movie. They may never believe in going to the movie theater again.
We start off with a popular minor-league hockey player named Derek (Dwayne Johnson). His fans call him the Tooth Fairy, for he's knocks out opposing players teeth while playing the physical sport. When he's not on the ice, Derek spends time with his girlfriend Carly (Ashley Judd), and her two kids Randy (Chase Ellison) and Tess (Destiny Whitlock). Derek is a straight-shooter and doesn't believe in "misleading" kids...

Chase Ellison has a sweet tooth.
The teen actor has joined the cast of Fox's family comedy "Tooth Fairy," which stars Dwayne Johnson, Ashley Judd and Julie Andrews.
Ellison plays the bright and gifted Randy, son to Judd's character, who forms a bond with his mom's minor-league hockey player boyfriend Derek (Johnson) whose nickname is "The Tooth Fairy." But that bond changes when Derek discourages Randy and is sentenced to act as a real tooth fairy, complete with tutu and wings.
Production begins Friday in Vancouver with Michael Lembeck directing.
Ellison can be seen in Alan Ball's "Towelhead," and in the upcoming indie "Fireflies in the Garden," which stars Julia Roberts.
Ellison is repped by Aba and Artistry Management.
