‘Are all men bastards… or just misunderstood?’, asks the tagline of In the Company of Men, Neil Labute’s directorial debut. Well, there’s no misunderstanding Chad (Aaron Eckhart), a blowhard junior executive with an inveterate hatred of women.
He’s introduced to us in an airport departure lounge, pacing the aisle as he rants to his colleague Howard (Matt Molloy). Just looking at them reveals their dynamic: Chad is a typical ‘Chad’ – blonde and boastful with a strong, dimpled chin; while Howard has a naff side parting, narrow shoulders and a stature no greater than 5ft 7. I don’t mean to insult the appearance of Matt Malloy, but this is a film about primal nastiness where appearance always matters.
Howard sits and listens to Chad’s incendiary stream of consciousness, which attacks everything from young recruits eyeing up his position to the ruthlessness of women. It is the latter point that Chad stresses,...

Emmy and Golden Globe winner Kirstie Alley has signed on to star in A Family Affair, an indie film written and directed by Tim Bartell. The plot follows a professional photographer Robert, in a midlife crisis with a young wife, who falls for his tough-love mother-in-law, the actress Olivia, (Alley). Both are beset by life: Robert with an ailing mother of his own and Olivia with her distant daughter. The pair find an unusual mix of guilt, solace, and laughter in a secret affair. Eventually, they must choose which means more to them: their desire to make things right with his wife and her daughter, or their love for each other. Bartell and Jeff Solema of Go East Media are producing the project with an eye to begin production in April 2020 in Los Angeles. Alley, who most recently guest-starred on ABC’s The Goldbergs, is repped by Buchwald and Untitled Entertainment.

Is the big mystery really over, or is this just another lie? Either way, Rebecca terrifies me now. If there's one thing you should take away from the Jan. 23 episode of The Lying Game, it's that Rebecca (Charisma Carpenter) is not to be trifled with. But since we didn't discover why until the very end of the episode, let's hash out some of the other lessons we learned this week. Sutton & Ryan have a sexy, awkward history: Yes, kids, it looks like we might have a new love triangle on our hands. Mads' (Alice Greczyn) new British squeeze Ryan (Misha Crosby) apparently hooked up with Sutton (Alexandra Chando) in ninth grade. I'm not sure how far they went, but Rebecca is (probably) Emma & Sutton's mom: I know we all pretty predicted it, but when Annie Hobbs (Stacy Edwards) told Sutton and Emma she wasn't their real mother, and Rebecca appeared...

Story 1: A boy runs in the park and is chased, then beaten with a baseball bat, even after he begs for his life. A set of shoe prints are visible in the snow. Mac (Gary Sinise) "Lucky for us it happened out here: best investigative tool money can't buy: snow." Mac 'cooks' up some pure sulphur. Stella (Melina Kanakaredes) paints the prints. Mac pours the sulphur over them to get a cast. A broken baseball bat is also found and Stella finds tyre tracks. The Vic was Paul Montenassi (nick Di Brizzi Jnr). Cod was blunt force trauma and has a tattoo on his back, which has been scraped or sawed. High velocity blood spatter is present on his face. In story 2: Marta Santo is found dead, with suspicious skid marks at the Cs and silver paint is seen on a red car. The flakes have been dried in.

Just like last week, Hawaii Five-0 provided us with a fine but unspectacular standalone offering last night. (Although, this was arguably a little more disappointing than all the jungle-based action.) ‘Powa Maka Moana’ wasn’t an entirely weak episode, but, upon reflection, I find that it had moments that I enjoyed, rather than being wholly satisfying in its entirety. In my review of one of Five-0’s more impressive episodes, ‘Ke Kinohi,’ I mentioned the idea that there’s a standard “type” for kidnapping plots, which includes ominous phone calls, not paying the ransom (which inevitably leads to at least one hostage dying), and other such infuriating clichés. ‘Ke Kinohi’ defied those clichés, but this didn’t, and as a result it ended up being a predictable and relatively dull hour.

I love that a heated discussion over Titanic’s infamous Oscar sweep of 1998 has already begun over at Laurent’s excellent retrospective. I guess it’s just the nature of this particular film. There is something about Titanic that hits a raw nerve in people and they feel a need to defend/criticize it so passionately.
As it happens, I fall in the ‘unconditional love’ category and I’m not afraid to admit it. To this day I have a passion for Titanic, a film that so perfectly matches what a glorious, spellbinding, big spectacle romance against an historic backdrop should be, and those films are so rare, especially when they are made with such precise and meticulous detail from James Cameron.
We shouldn’t be embarrassed over how much we loved Titanic in the 90′s. We should embrace it. So as our third ‘Choose The Winners’ article, we are...

A look at what's new on DVD today:
"Back to the Future: 25th Anniversary Trilogy"
Directed by Robert Zemeckis
Released by Universal Home Entertainment
Yes, we're finally getting the footage of the original Marty McFly, Eric Stoltz, for the first time, but for many simply having the hi-def version of Robert Zemeckis' time-travel franchise will be good enough. Commentaries, deleted scenes, a full-length documentary and much, much more come on this new set of the trilogy.
"Alien Anthology"
Directed by Ridley Scott, James Cameron, David Fincher, Jean-Pierre Jeunet
Released by Fox Home Entertainment
While not as much of an upgrade over its previous DVD release as "Back to the Future," the Blu-ray update of the four "Alien" films worth owning now boasts isolated scores for each film, all of Ridley Scott's sketches for the first "Alien," the uncut documentary of David Fincher's ill-fated "Alien 3" as...
