Late yesterday, I expressed a bit of concern when a friend spotted a PETA billboard flying high above a Los Angeles street that featured the late Karen Black hugging a gravestone.
You can read that piece, and see the pic, here.
To many, including myself, it felt like an ill-timed resurrection of a campaign that Black participated in years ago.
PETA, however, got in contact with ShockTillYouDrop.com today to explain "her widower, Stephen Eckelberry, gave PETA his blessing to revive the ad to mark the first Halloween since her passing."

Actor with a talent for conveying her characters' rich and troubled inner lives
The New Hollywood movement was primarily a male, auteur-led phenomenon. But the contribution of performers as adventurous and vital as Karen Black, who has died aged 74 from complications from cancer, should not be overlooked. Black was electrified as well as electrifying: her tornado of hair, her fearless physicality and those indelible feline eyes combined to create a woozy and unapologetic sexual energy. She looked offbeat, and she knew how to use that. "I couldn't have been an actress in the 1930s," she said, reflecting on her role as a movie extra in The Day of the Locust (1975). "My face moves around too much."
It was in the late 1960s and 70s that she became one of the great character actors of Us cinema in a series of performances in key New Hollywood works. Partly it was that...

Cinema Retro is very saddened to learn the news that Karen Black has died at age 74 following a long battle with cancer that was documented on web sites by her husband Stephen Eckelberry. Black found that her insurance plans would not cover some of the experimental treatments she had hoped to try and planned to travel to Europe where they could be administered. Drained of her savings by the cost of health care treatments, Black and her husband made appeals for financial donations on the web in hopes of raising enough money to get to Europe. Sadly, she became completely incapacitated before that could happen. Eckelberry had documented the last three years of Black's life as part of a documentary about her...

Actress Karen Black died in Los Angeles yesterday at the age of 74, from complications of cancer. The Hollywood legend was known for roles in seminal '70s movies, as well as her lengthy horror and indie credits.
Black made the most of a pivotal scene in "Easy Rider" as one of the women who drops acid in the St. Louis Cemetery with the doomed bikers played by Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper. The tripped-out sex scene to follow is an unforgettable foray into the darker side of the hippie era. She also stunned in "Five Easy Pieces," opposite Jack Nicholson (who was in "Easy Rider"), and later starred in his feature-length directorial debut "Drive, He Said."
Two years after "Five Easy Pieces," Black appeared in "Portnoy's Complaint" as the protagonist's girlfriend, Mary Jane Reid -- the sort of gentile girlfriend that's a staple of author Philip Roth's novels. She...

Actress Karen Black, star of such films as Five Easy Pieces and Trilogy of Terror died today in Los Angeles. She was 74.
Born in 1939 in Illinois, she studied acting at Northwestern University until she dropped out and moved to New York. Summer stock and theater were Black's staples, eventually debuting on Broadway in 1961. Her first major film role was in Francis Ford Coppola's You're a Big Boy Now. Black is best known to "mainstream" audiences for her roles in films like Five Easy Pieces (a role for which she was nominated for an Oscar), Easy Rider, and Nashville, which represented a time when independent films were emerging as a viable, respectable segment of the film world.
Black's career took a "turn" in 1975 when she took the lead in Trilogy of Terror, a made-for-tv anthology film. (The "turn" reference comes from Hollywood Reporter, which to me comes off dismissive, as if she wasted her career.

Actress Karen Black has turned to online crowd-funding in an effort to pay for cancer treatment, reports Deadline Hollywood.
The 73-year-old, who starred alongside Jack Nicholson in "Easy Rider" and "Five Easy Pieces," was diagnosed with ampullary cancer in November 2010. After undergoing an operation to remove a third of her pancreas, followed by chemo and radiation therapy, the actress was thought to have beaten the disease in July 2011. But sadly, just a few months later, the cancer returned and it has now spread to her lungs and lower back.
Now, Black is looking to raise $17,000 so she'll be able to enroll in an experimental treatment in Europe. Black's fundraising campaign was launched on March 14, and she's already raised close to $14,000.
Black's husband Stephen Eckelberry explains on the Gofundme page that the campaign is necessary, despite Black's successful career as an actress:
"So here is the big question; why would someone like Karen need money,...
