With Fremantle handling international distribution, “Adolfo” has a lot to celebrate. Auza’s first feature, it also took best feature at Stockholm, screened as opening night film at last year’s TIFF Next Wave Festival and, testing home market waters, scooped best actress for Rocío de la Mañana at Mexico’s Guadalajara Festival in June.
Now, via Cinemex, Mexico’s second biggest exhibition chain, “Adolfo” will hit 12 theaters around Mexico on June 6. A platform release via Cinemex expands in its second week to another 12 locations. “Adolfo” will play upscale Premium and Platino theaters on the Cinemex circuit,

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 continued on February 23 with episode 8 on MTV. Airing concurrently with the main show is its tea-spilling, backstage-focused sister series “Untucked,” now in its 15th season. For this week’s challenge, the nine remaining queens got to participate in the iconic “Snatch Game” with their best celebrity impersonations. The three safe queens this week were Dawn as Meghan McCain, Q as Amelia Earhart, and Plasma as Patti LuPone so they were the first to return to the Werk Room while the tops and bottoms received critiques from the judges.
Despite dreaming about winning “Snatch Game” for a long time, Plasma was “fine” with being safe because she wasn’t as confident with her performance as she thought she’d be. Dawn was equally fine with the decision, understanding that she didn’t stand out in the group. They both gave a “cheers” to Q for her first...

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 continued on February 23 with the eighth episode in RuPaul’s quest to find “America’s next drag superstar.” Previously in episode seven, Plasma enjoyed her shining moment as the star and challenge winner in “The Sound of Rusic” while Mhi’ya Iman Le’Paige and Megami didn’t strike a chord with the judges in their supporting roles. Despite a flipless Lip Sync for Your Life, Mhi’ya came out on top once again and sent Megami back to New York.
This week, the remaining 9 queens head to the celebrity dais with the classic impersonation challenge, “Snatch Game.” Seated at the judges’ dais for episode 8 was Emmy winning host RuPaul Charles, longtime bestie Michelle Visage, recurring judge Carson Kressley, and actress Kyra Sedgwick as the extra special guest.

Actor Amy Adams once unwittingly snatched a role from Million Dollar Baby star Hilary Swank. But the two didn’t know this about each other until they happened to be interviewed together.

Actors usually have no hard feelings towards other performers who might be offered a role they couldn’t win. But discovering that Adams nabbed a movie that the Oscar-winner had her heart set on made for a humorous, albeit slightly uncomfortable conversation between the two.
The pair offered their own unique insight into the film industry in The Hollywood Reporter’s Actors roundtable. They opened up alongside other actors like Nicole Kidman and Natalie Portman about their journeys through the film industry.

This article contains spoilers for Starfield.
Though I have some complaints about Starfield‘s RPG and exploration mechanics, I have to say that the game’s side missions are some of the best I’ve seen in a Bethesda game since Oblivion. Granted, Starfield‘s massive galaxy is filled with slightly less inspiring “kill and fetch” assignments, but I was stunned by both the quality of the majority of Starfield‘s sidequests and how many of those quests exist far enough away from the game’s vaguely beaten path to ensure you may never experience them.
While you may want to blaze through Starfield’s… serviceable campaign in order to unlock its various New Game+ benefits, I can assure you that you will not see the best that this game has to offer until you take the time to discover and complete some of the more obscure quests that often...

“This is the second stand-up special I’ve ever had, the first one I’ve produced and I’m just very excited for y’all to see it,” the Saturday Night Live alum said minutes before screening her one-hour special, The First Woman. “If you like it, tell your friends, your family, your enemies, anyone who owes you money.”
Judging by the response from the crowd — among the notable names were Topher Grace, Bob the Drag Queen, Blake Anderson, London Hughes and Punam Patel — there will be a lot of chatter about the special, which will be released for purchase via 800 Pound Gorilla on Aug. 15 before a YouTube debut on Aug. 29.

When looked at from the outside, the premises of the first two "Bill & Ted" movies are baffling. In the first film, the title characters (Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves) are a pair of slacker California dudes who are more interested in their band than in studying high school history. Randomly, a visitor from the future (George Carlin) appears in a high-tech, time-traveling phone booth and announces to Bill and Ted that their band will not only become successful, but that their music will become so profound as to unite humanity and usher in a new utopia. In order to form their band, however, they will have to pass an upcoming history exam and stay in school. The Carlin character gives them the phone booth, and they travel through time, viewing history in person through their particular slacker lens. In the sequel, Bill and Ted die and traverse the afterlife...

As the American treasure himself says in the opening credits, Mel Brooks is a hero to some, and merely a legend to others. He broke ground in irreverent social commentary with Blazing Saddles, and rewired the knobs in the monster’s brain for Young Frankenstein. Brooks’ Hulu TV-sketch-series-masquerading-as-a-film-sequel throws more jokes at the viewer than almost any comedy in the History of The World, Part II. Not all of them land squarely, though the ricochets inflict sufficient comic collateral damage.
There is a lot we can learn from an anthology sketch series. All of which is graded on a curveball. Like History of the World, Part I, the series is made up of short gags, like Marco Polo’s (Jake Johnson) impromptu gift-exchange on his first trip to China, longer one-off sequences, and a few continuing stories. The eight-episode series is Brooks’ first creative project since composing the score to...

Over 40 years after Mel Brooks had the presence of mind to title his epic 1981 comedy History of the World, Part I, the film’s sequel is finally set for release with a similarly all-star ensemble and factually loose portrayal of historic events.
As opposed to its predecessor — which crammed centuries into 90 minutes — History of the World, Part II will be a four-night event, kicking of March 6 on Hulu.
Nick Kroll, Ike Barinholtz, Wanda Sykes and Brooks himself lead the cast, which also includes Quinta Brunson, Seth Rogen (as Noah, of “The Ark” fame), Zazie Beatz,...

The Master of Comedy, Mel Brooks, is back to take another swipe at some of history’s most iconic figures and events with History of the World, Part II. Over 40 years since Brooks’ original film made a mockery of Moses, introduced the first caveman critic, and turned the Spanish Inquisition into a song-and-dance routine, the legendary comedian is ready for another trip through the ages. Times certainly have changed, but Brooks’s knack for making fun of humankind’s victories and losses remains as sharp as ever. Hulu debuted a History of the World Part 2 teaser trailer on Friday, featuring a massive cast of comedy greats in the making.
Here’s the official synopsis:
After waiting over 40 years, there is finally a sequel to the seminal Mel Brooks film, History of the World, Part I, with each episode featuring a variety of sketches that take us through different periods of human history.

However, he discovers that the manikins and other objects that symbolize historical figures have come to life every night. The movie was praised for its astonishing special effects, which have made the film a lot more creative in having its children viewers enjoy learning about the fictionalized versions of historical individuals and their humorous and wacky interactions with the guard. With the unexpected return of Bob Iger last month for a new stint as Disney CEO, the entertainment giant’s veteran chief financial officer Christine McCarthy has emerged as a leading contender to take over the top job.
“Christine has always been a force to be reckoned with, but you have to put her on a list of top five possibilities after the last few weeks,” a Disney insider said of the now prominent CFO. If McCarthy was handed the keys to the Magic Kingdom in the next 23 months, the exec would occupy a historic position as the first female CEO in Disney’s soon to be more than 100 year existence.

This, and the realisation that not everyone obeys the rules, to their obvious benefit, leads to appreciation for the anti-hero, or protagonists with their own value systems.
That may help to explain why we have a sneaking admiration — or interest, at least — in fictional characters whose "heroic" credentials are quite vague as to morality, say James Bond, or his equally lethal but less glamorous American counterpart, Donald Hamilton’s Matt Helm.
Or for that matter, those compelled to take the law into their own hands, vigilante style — an entire host, spanning various genres and media, from Don Pendleton’s Mack Bolan, alias the Executioner, to V from "V for Vendetta", to Paul Kersey (Charles Bronson) in the "Death Wish" series of films, to Bollywood’s Angry Young Man.

Few things can ignite an audience more than a cold case. What happened to Amelia Earhart? Where are the remains of Jimmy Hoffa? There's a reason true crime has become its own billion-dollar industry, with studios snatching up the rights to as many ripped-from-the-headlines tales as possible. It's a lot harder to take creative liberties with a story based on real events or real people who can publicly comment on the project, but if a story is tackling an unsolved mystery, who's to say that their interpretation is not the correct one? For over 50 years, Americans have been trying to figure out the...

Lily Rabe takes on three very different characters this season between Showtime’s “The First Lady” and “American Horror Story: Double Feature.” In the former, the actress costars as Lorena Hickok, beloved companion of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, with the series exploring their well-documented relationship that turned romantic. “There’s this wonderful feeling of responsibility when you play anyone,” says Rabe in an exclusive new interview for Gold Derby, “but certainly more so when you’re playing a real person.” Watch the full video chat above.
Rabe was surprised to learn just how much information there was on Hickok and Roosevelt’s relationship. Much of her research came from the letters they sent each other, which she describes as “some of the most romantic, gorgeous letters I’ve ever read.” The actress observes that the pair’s shared similarities as forward-thinking women likely drew themselves to each other. “They probably felt,...

It’s unlikely that anyone was holding their breath for an English-language reimagining of Francis Veber’s 2006 French hit “La Doublure,” a lovable if trite farce in which a porter and a supermodel fake a romantic relationship in order to prevent a PR disaster. But with the help of some doting cultural specificity, a charming cast and sunshiny Los Angeles skies, “Come As You Are” director Richard Wong’s “The Valet” proves that a remake can still be a welcome thing these days, even in a world oversaturated with them.
Written by Bob Fisher and Rob Greenberg (the duo behind the “Overboard” remake), this sweet-natured and good-humored rom-com-with-a-twist should easily find reasonable streaming success upon its May 20 launch on Hulu. This version of the story brings its distinctly “Notting Hill” beats to Tinseltown, where the modest and socially awkward Antonio works as a valet, parking the fancy cars of a...

American Horror Story started out more like American Crime Story on Wednesday, with a pair of presidents conspiring to enact one of history’s most notorious assassinations.
In the black-and-white world that was, Ike and Dick (aka Richard Nixon, played by One Tree Hill’s Uncle Keith!) caught wind that JFK was planning to expose a secret human-alien pact made several years earlier. More specifically, in exchange for access to their sweet space technology, Ike allowed the extraterrestrials to abduct 5,000 humans per year to serve as test subjects. That sure sounded like a lot of innocent people at first, but...

It's a shame when such a thrilling concept is ruined by a group of 20 somethings running around like teenagers.
American Horror Story Season 10 Episode 7 -- the first chapter of Death Valley -- started strong but quickly fizzled out.
The series would have been wise to stick to one time period to tell this tale because the black-and-white look for the story in 1954 was actually very good.
It helped draw me into the events more, and Maria planning dinner for her husband while her son played outside, only for some extraterrestrial drama to kick off. Well, it was a lot of fun.
Obviously, the story will connect to the different time periods, and it wouldn't be a surprise if we took a trip back to when Amelia went missing.
You don't just go missing and return pregnant after 20 years in the wreckage of a spaceship.
Neal McDonough was perfect as this...

Exclusive: Picturestart, the production company set up by former Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-president Erik Feig, is developing a series adaptation of Maggie Shipstead’s novel Great Circle.
The book, which was published in May and just made the 2021 Booker Prize longlist, covers early 20th century aviation, Prohibition, the Great Depression, World War II and a disgraced Hollywood starlet. The Guardian noted that it “has more than a touch of Fleabag about it.”
Feig’s company, which is backed by the likes of Warner Bros, Nordic Entertainment Group, Scholastic and Endeavor Content, won the rights to the book in a competitive bidding war.
Shipstead, who has also written Seating Arrangements and Astonish Me, will exec produce the project, with Picturestart now looking to find a writer to adapt it as a series.

And by the hour's end, it felt as if the show had concluded a huge part of DC's Legends of Tomorrow Season 6. So, where do they go from here?
Sara is finally safe and sound with her team and her fiancé and away from the terrible Bishop. But there is one catch; she's half-alien now.
Sara sacrificed a "clean" clone of herself to stop Bishop and his evil plan to take over the universe with his half-human, half-alien clones. So, she is stuck with this hybrid version of Sara Lance.
Why would I help you? Because I died and you cloned me? I die about once a year, and my girlfriend's a clone. Now I'm gonna get off this planet,...

Legends of Tomorrow Season 6 Episode 6
So far, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow season 6 has been almost nothing but shtick. We’ve had the ‘50s horror movie episode, the ‘70s punk episode, the political thriller, the reality game show episode, and last week’s Disney princess episode. “Bishop’s Gambit” is the first episode of the season to not obviously be doing a bit, and by a weird coincidence, it also does maybe the best homage yet, while also doing exceptionally well by the characters and the season’s overarching plot. So par for the course for this show.
“Bishop’s Gambit” is all about accelerating the search for Sara. Mick and Kayla are on Bishop’s planet looking for her and Gary is trying to help Sara break out, while the rest of the gang is hunting down Amelia Earhart...

DC's Legends of Tomorrow is the only show where you can use alien and Amelia Earhart in the same sentence when talking about it and it makes total sense.
We saw more extraterrestrial creatures on DC's Legends of Tomorrow Season 6 Episode 6 than we probably have on all of DC's Legends of Tomorrow Season 6 so far, and it was epic.
We were promised aliens, and aliens are what we got. But we also are getting a great villain, surprising plot twists, and an intriguing story that we are excited to watch every week.
"Bishop's Gambit" was another fun hour produced by the wackiest team of writers on network television. Even though it didn't contribute much to furthering the overarching season story until its last scene, it was still successful.
We didn't learn much more about Bishop's plan, nor were the Legends any closer to saving Sara despite Mick's attempts. But...

This DC’s Legends of Tomorrow review contains spoilers.
There’s a lot to like about “Meat: The Legends,” the second episode in Legends of Tomorrow’s sixth season. The problem is the good bits are generally disconnected from the main plot of the episode, and the rest of it just wasn’t very good.
Our first episode to really jump into the season’s arc picks up right where the last one left off: with an alien floating through the timestream, getting smushed on the windshield of the Waverider. From there, the gang picks up a sign of trouble from October, 1955, where they find a newly retconned massacre in San Bernardino that points to an alien culprit. We see a local fast food joint that is rapidly taking off, and some people in town with very mysterious cravings for meat, so the team splits in two: Mick, Constantine, Ava...

When we last saw them, in the 1991 sequel film Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, Bill S. Preston, Esquire (Alex Winter), and Ted “Theodore” Logan (Keanu Reeves) were on the verge of creating music that would usher in a new era of global harmony and world peace.

Filmmaker Alma Har’el helped conceive Time’s 100 Women of the Year issue, designed to recognize the contributions of female leaders, innovators, activists, entertainers, athletes and artists who defined the century from 1920 through 2019. Along with original portraits, the magazine will release 100 covers reflecting the era of each year.
“I don’t think Time has ever done anything this big,” “Honey Boy” director Har’el says, speaking exclusively to Variety. “They usually do one of these covers a year. We’re doing 100 of them.”
“If I felt hungry to take solace in some of the histories of some of these women, I immersed myself in it in the most encompassing way I could,” she adds. The idea was born out of Ha’rel’s frustration and a need to “do something that takes me outside of myself.”
Har’el spent much of 2019 on the awards trail discussing “Honey Boy,” a drama written by and starring Shia Labeouf.

National Geographic has tapped actress Allison Janney to narrate its upcoming documentary special “Expedition Amelia,” the network exclusively told TheWrap.
“I’m thrilled to team up with National Geographic to help tell this story of one of history’s bravest and most influential women,” said Janney. “Earhart’s story of going against all odds to pursue her dream is just as inspirational today as it was over 80 years ago, and this story sheds new light on her life, her challenges, her triumphs and her lasting legacy as an adventurer and pioneer.”
The special follows Nat Geo explorer Dr. Robert Ballard — known for finding the Titanic in 1985 — as he embarks on an expedition to find Amelia Earhart’s airplane, which has been missing since the aviator disappeared during an attempt to fly around the world at the equator in 1937. The special was first announced in July at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour.

Even though the Pierce deal fell apart and the company is still facing an ostensibly serious takeover bid, the Roys still like to throw a party. “Return,” this week’s episode of Succession, opens with Kendall FaceTiming his new fling and sometime rival Naomi Pierce from the bathroom, and she needs him to send her a dick pic “for her records.” This is, weirdly, the most functional sexual relationship on the show. He begrudgingly goes along with her request, and for the first time in the season seems happy. It won’t last.

There is danger of that again in the second round, to begin tonight. The candidate field remains enormous, if changed. Last time, of 24 hopefuls, 20 participated, with Massachusetts congressman Seth Moulton and Miramar (Fl) Mayor Wayne Messam among those not on stage. A podium was left open for vanished aviator Amelia Earhart, but she did not return.
Messam and Moulton are still on the outs, having failed to reach 1% in the polls as well as secure 65,000 unique donors.

National Geographic and deep-sea explorer Dr. Robert Ballard has announced an expedition to solve the mystery of famed aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart. The project, which will result in a two-hour special to air on Nat Geo this fall, was announced today during TCA.
In a scientific expedition jointly funded by National Geographic Partners and National Geographic Society, Ballard, best known for his 1985 discovery of the Titanic shipwreck, is setting out in August to solve the mystery of Amelia Earhart’s disappearance and end decades of speculation about what actually happened to her. National Geographic Society’s archeologist-in-residence, Fredrik Hiebert, joins Ballard and will lead a team to search for signs of Earhart on land following clues that may lead to the location of her bones.
The ocean search will be conducted aboard Ev Nautilus, owned by the Ocean Exploration Trust under the direction of Chief Operating Officer and Expedition Leader Allison Fundis.

Robert Ballard, the deep-sea explorer who discovered the Titanic shipwreck in 1985, will star in a new National Geographic special attempting to locate Amelia Earhart’s missing plane, the cable channel announced on Tuesday.
Ballard’s expedition is set to begin next month and will be documented in a two-hour special titled “Expedition Amelia.” The documentary will debut on Nat Geo on Sunday, Oct. 20.
“I have always been intrigued by the story of Amelia Earhart because she shocked the world doing what everyone thought was impossible, much like what I have attempted to do my entire career as a deep-sea explorer. Also, like Amelia, I was born in Kansas, so it is only appropriate that a Kansan solves this riddle,” Ballard said in a statement. “We have an incredible team in place of experts, scientists and explorers who are working diligently to map out this ambitious expedition. In the clip, directed by Neilson’s brother Todd, the Canadian-born, New Zealand-based singer-songwriter plays the part of the corner-office executive who calls the shots. “Rules, I make ’em and I break ’em/Fools, my mama didn’t raise ’em,” she sings, as a strutting beat and trebly rockabilly guitar lay the foundation for some powerful, Sharon Jones-style belting. The video...

As far as we know, Michael C. Hall has no designs on the upcoming Cats movie, but he’d have made a fine Rum Tum Tugger, at least judging by today’s one-time-only, nice-way-to-pass-a-Sunday Skittles Commercial: The Broadway Musical.
Only 1,500 New Yorkers – some paying a couple hundred bucks for a seat at Manhattan’s beautiful Town Hall, ticket proceeds going to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS – can lay claim to witnessing this half-hour Super Bowl commercial that wasn’t really a Super Bowl commercial. Numbers aside, Hall tore into the musical like it was, well, Broadway.
Some background: The project started a couple Super Bowls ago, when Skittles owner Mars teamed with advertising agency Ddb Worldwide to come up with something attention-getting. Following last year’s Clio-winning “Exclusive the Rainbow” spot, in which one Skittles fan was granted access to the commercial...

This show is special to me and makes me feel all fuzzy and warm inside. It's like a warm embrace at the end of a tiring day.
Sorry, it's just that New Amsterdam Season 1 Episode 11 was super emotional, which is to say it was business as usual on a series that makes it its mission to trigger a person's allergies.
What are we supposed to do with all of these emotions?!
Let's start with Max's chemotherapy. Max, like most doctors, is the worst patient ever! He wouldn't sit his busybody behind down for anything in the world.
The thing is, chemo has a way of knocking a person on their ass, so no matter how much Max tried to put it off, it caught up to him.
It's easy to think of him as invincible the way he's always on the move, and he never lets anything get him down for too long,...

Here's our spoiler-filled review of a creepy-crawly adventure that reminds us humanity breeds its own scary monsters…
This Doctor Who review contains spoilers.
Doctor Who Season 11 Episode 3
What had eight limbs, moved in a terrifyingly inhuman fashion and made Doctor Who thescariest it’s been in decades? Stacey Dooley and Kevin Clifton’s Cybermandance on Strictly, of course! Small wonder, then, that Chris Chibnall and the team felt the need to counter that horror by focusing this week’s episode on everyone’s least-favourite bath-buddies, spiders.
Choosing to fixate on a species whose mere depiction can chill the blood of some audience members was a bold move indeed, and while I’m not especially arachnophobic, I did appreciate that the spiders were portrayed with some sensitivity. There’s a lot you can do within the realm of CG animation by adjusting their body type and how they...
