Exclusive: The Broadway-bound Ali musical, based on the life of three-time world heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali, will have its world premiere in the late sports superstar’s birthplace in Louisville, Kentucky in Fall 2024, Deadline can reveal.
Richard Willis, the show’s lead producer, told me that Ali will float “like a butterfly” into the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts for a three- or four-week run. An opening date hasn’t been set yet but it’s likely to be in October or early November next year.
Deadline broke the news about the musical in September last year.
Willis was speaking to Deadline in London where he was reuniting with Ali director and book writer Clint Dyer, who serves as deputy artistic director of London’s National Theatre, and composer Teddy Abrams, the music director and conductor of the Louisville Orchestra.

When you make a movie with Michael Mann, you're likely going to become an expert in your character's field of expertise. James Caan had to study safecracking to a level where he could actually pull off a job. The cops and crooks in "Heat" went through such rigorous firearms training, Val Kilmer's on-the-fly reload mid-shootout has been singled out as textbook by military instructors. So when Will Smith got cast as Muhammad Ali, the preternaturally skilled heavyweight champion, Mann had him bulk up and get in the ring with prominent boxing contenders.
Though Mann's "Ali" was generally well-received when it was released in 2001, critics complained that it essentially told the same "Rumble in the Jungle" story as Leon Gast's Oscar-winning 1996 documentary, "When We Were Kings." In doing so, they overlooked what is easily the most technically detailed and accurate dramatization of "the sweet science" ever put to film.

Imperioli, best known for starring as Christopher Moltisanti in “The Sopranos,” will play Dominic Di Grasso, who travels to the White Lotus resort with his eldery father and son, a recent college graduate, in tow.
Imperioli is the first cast member HBO has confirmed as a part of Season 2. However, it was reported in October that Jennifer Coolidge had joined that cast after starring in Season 1. HBO declined to comment at the time.
The series premiered in July 2021. The first season, set at the fictional White Lotus resort in Hawaii, follows a group of visitors with seemingly perfect lives over six episodes. Along with Coolidge, stars include Connie Britton, Natasha Rothwell, Steve Zahn, Murray Barlett, Alexandra Daddario, Fred Hechinger, Jake Lacy, Sydney Sweeney and Brittany O’Grady.

Updated with full list: The nominations for the 27th SAG Award were announced Thursday in a virtual ceremony featuring Lily Collins and Daveed Diggs reading off nominees in 13 film and TV categories honoring the best acting of the past year.
Much like it did at the Golden Globes the day before, Netflix led the way with 30 total nominations. The Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture ensemble race features three Netflix dramas: Da 5 Bloods, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and The Trial of the Chicago 7 along with A24’s Minari and Amazon Studios’ One Night In Miami. Outside of Chicago 7 it is a fully new slate of films from the admittedly apples-to-oranges Best Motion Picture lists set by the Golden Globes on Wednesday.
Last year, Parasite won the film ensemble award, pushing it down the road to the eventual Best Picture Oscar.

Michael Imperioli could be back at HBO, where he starred for seven seasons on the network’s seminal drama “The Sopranos.”
Imperioli is set to produce and star in a new series with Alec Berg, which is currently in development.
The project is described as “a meta blend of fact and fiction loosely based on Imperioli’s experiences as a practicing Buddhist.” Imperioli would write with Berg, with Amy Solomon as an executive producer.
Imperioli is best known for his role as Christopher Moltisanti on the HBO crime drama “The Sopranos,” for which he was nominated for five Emmys and two Golden Globes, winning the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama in 2004. More recently, Imperioli had a small role in Regina King’s film “One Night in Miami,” playing famed boxing trainer Angelo Dundee.
His other credits include “The Last Full Measure,” “Goodfellas,” “Cabaret Maxime” and “Summer of Sam.

When Muhammad Ali passed away on June 4th, 2016, those who knew him, admired him, fought him and loved him attested to his singular skill as a boxer, his fleet footwork and his way with words (especially of the trash-talking variety). What was often emphasized the most in these tributes, however, was how Ali was as much a political firebrand as a gamechanging pugilist – both the 20th century's consummate athlete and a social activist willing to sacrifice his career by standing up for what he believed. This was the heavyweight champion...

Roberto Duran is definitely one of the greatest boxing legends who stepped into the ring.
From director Jonathan Jakubowicz, Hands Of Stone follows the life story of the Panamanian professional boxer known for his devastating punching power to earn the nickname “Manos de Piedra.”
The story follows the boxer growing up in Panama and training at a young early age. He falls in love with a young woman and later adopts a well-known boxing training in New York City for the next stages of boxing championships and greatness. The movie also shows the building rivalry between himself and Sugar Ray Leonard to the ultimate showdown at the No Mas Fight.
Lrm had a sit-down interview with Jonathan Jakubowicz at a press day in Beverly Hills earlier this month. He talked about Roberto Duran, his two actors’ transformations of Edgar Ramirez and Usher Raymond III, and creating Latino hero movies.

The film follows the rise and fall of up-and-coming boxer Godfrey Nyakana. "Titleshot" records some of the biggest names of boxing during the 1990's. Russell Crowe and Ron Howard have led the tributes to Muhammad Ali's boxing trainer Angelo Dundee, who died on Wednesday at the age of 90.
Dundee was being treated for a blood clot found after a trip to visit Ali in Louisville, Kentucky for the fighter's 70th birthday last month, and he passed away surrounded by his loved ones in a rehabilitation center in Tampa, Florida.
A statement from his family reads, "He was very happy that he got to celebrate Ali's (70th) birthday earlier this year and also that he got to go to the Hall of Fame. He still had much to do, but led a full and extraordinary life."
Dundee served as a longtime cornerman in the ring to Ali at the height of the boxer's career, and also helped train legends including Sugar Ray Leonard, George Foreman, Carmen Basilio and Jose Napoles.
He famously sparked controversy at Ali's 1963 bout with Henry Cooper in London when he cut Ali's glove to delay the start of the fifth round and give the struggling boxer time to recover from a knockdown at the end of the fourth.
Dundee also worked in the movie industry, and helped train Crowe to portray boxer James J. Braddock in Howard's 2005 drama Cinderella Man.
Crowe learned of Dundee's death on Thursday, and took to his Twitter.com page to remember his pal.
In a post, he writes, "Rip Angelo Dundee. My life is so much richer for having known him. He had the biggest heart of any man I ever knew. God love you Angelo."
Howard also tweeted, "Angelo Dundee Rip - all time great boxing trainer and a tremendous person. He trained R Crowe in Cinderella Man and inspired us all", while John Cusack added: "rip to the great angelo dundee - i watched him train great fighters as long as i can remeber (sic)."...

Tuesday (Jan. 17) is boxing legend Muhammad Ali's 70th birthday, but the celebration took place over the weekend. On Sunday, friends and family gathered at the first of five scheduled parties that are taking place in the next couple months. This party was also a fundraiser for the Ali Center, a cultural and educational center in Louisville, Ali's hometown.
Guests included boxing great Lennox Lewis, trainer Angelo Dundee and the three U.S. hikers that were imprisoned in Iran and recently released, as Ali was one of the people lobbying for their release and is a prominent Muslim.

Tyrannosaur is the first feature you've written and directed, and it's a powerful, moving and shocking film. How would you classify it?
It's a love story. People thought they were going to get a typical gritty council-estate drama with shaky cameras, but I wanted to make a love story and a properly cinematic movie. I kept telling the crew: "We're not making a little British film here, we're making cinema." It helped that we had Eric Wilson, a very gifted cinematographer.
Where do the film's darker moments come from?
I live in a state of hypersensitivity, and I've always had this feeling that something bad is going to happen to myself, or my wife and children. This manifests itself in different fears and visions.

One difference is that Made in Miami focuses on his training in Miami in the years when he first turned professional. The documentary also offers longer interviews with Ali's trainers (e.g., Angelo Dundee), doctors (e.g., Ferdie Pacheco), and sycophantic journalists who rave about how disciplined Ali was in regard to women and drink — so much so that some thought he was gay. More blatantly than the first film, Made in...

The films of Michael Mann
Photo: Universal Pictures Ranking the Films of Michael Mann In advance of this Wednesday's release of Public Enemies I thought it was only fitting to take a look back at the films from director Michael Mann and see how they would sort themselves out in a quick ranking session and what a wild last few days it has been. On Thursday, last week, I saw Public Enemies, later that night I watched Manhunter, the next day I watched Thief and The Last of the Mohicans -- then the weekend arrived. In a matter of 48 hours I watched Heat, The Insider, Ali, Miami Vice and Collateral all in an attempt to make sure my mind was completely refreshed and ready to sort things out. You will notice I am only ranking nine films since I have never seen The Keep (1983) and it wasn't available through Netflix...

Veteran actor Ron Silver, best known for stand-out roles in Ali and The West Wing, died on Sunday in his home town of New York after a two-year battle with esophageal cancer. The gifted character actor made his big screen debut in 1976 anthology movie Tunnel Vision alongside John Candy and Chevy Chase, showing a dry wit and sly sense of comic timing that would be a feature of his 35 year career.Well-known on the big screen for roles such as Timecop's villainous Senator McComb, Reversal Of Fortune's defense attorney Alan Dershowitz and Ali's cornerman Angelo Dundee, Silver also made his mark on television. Perhaps best among his TV roles was his terrific performance as Jed Bartlet's election strategist Bruno Gianelli in The West Wing. Unafraid to ruffle feathers, Silver's slick svengali lent season three a chunk of dramatic bite.Fittingly, Silver saw himself as a politician as much as an actor,...

Sideways star Paul Giamatti fears his foul mouth ruined the movie experience for Cinderella Man co-stars Russell Crowe and Renee Zellweger because he couldn't stop swearing. The actor had to constantly re-shoot his scenes because he's find himself ad-libbing swear words after taking tips from movie consultant Angelo Dundee. He says, "He (Dundee) was the greatest boxing trainer that ever lived. He was Muhammad Ali's trainer. He was in the corner and he would give me pointers and stuff. It was very hard actually, working with him, because he's got an incredibly foul mouth and this is a PG-13 movie, so I had to constantly re-shoot things because I'd jump in the ring and go, `You f'ing...' all of that stuff because it rubs off on you. Those guys never stop swearing, it's unbelievable. It goes with the sport."...

Movie star Russell Crowe has been tagged "a gutless worm" by Australian boxer Joe Bugner, after he insulted the former heavyweight fighter. Crowe asked Bugner to help him train for his role as boxer James J. Braddock in new movie Cinderella Man, but then changed his mind and hired Muhammad Ali's former trainer Angelo Dundee instead. When Crowe then injured himself in training, Bugner criticized Dundee, and the actor responded with a foul-mouthed telephone call, in which he insulted Bugner "in such a manner that I will never, ever forgive him". The 54-year-old former World Boxing Foundation champion tells the Sydney Daily Telegraph, "He started at me, calling me an idiot and saying that I didn't know anything about boxing. I said to him, 'Let me tell you something. I've been in boxing for 33 years. I know more about boxing than you'll ever know about acting. I'm not a phony, whereas all you do is read scripts.' I said, 'Russell, go and shove your head up your a**.' And I hung up. The guy's 40 going on 12. I was never going to put up with his silly tantrums. And he behaves like a f****ing girl. If I saw him, I wouldn't give him the time of day. If he approached me, I would stand and wait. I would be right there in front of the bloke. And I would have to resort to my old career."...
