Two separate, controversial Idaho laws have landed in front of the justices of the U.S. Supreme Court this year: the state’s total ban on abortion, and its ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth. As he prepared to defend both, Idaho Attorney General Raúl Labrador (R) sought help from lawyers at the Alliance Defending Freedom, a controversial, far-right Christian group.

“It’s the ’80s, do a lot of coke and vote for Ronald Regan!” That song may be an all-time classic Mystery Science Theater 3000 riff from the Gremlins rip-off Hobgoblins, but one might find themselves also singing that ditty more and more often when watching TV and movies.
Stranger Things, Totally Killer, It, and even parts of Loki’s second season take us back to the 1980s, filling the screen with neon clothes, Dungeons & Dragons references, and so much punk and synth-pop.
It’s easy to see why the ’80s would get attention in the past decade, as kids of that era have grown to be the adults with buying power (such as it is) and control over media franchises. However, ’80s nostalgia has become bankrupt even quicker than previous versions, precisely because of its thin and disinterested look at the target decade.

Outsted Fox News star Tucker Carlson will appear in his first major public event since his April canning on Friday, when he hosts an Iowa presidential forum presented by Blaze Media.
Carlson will speak one-on-one with five candidates at what is billed as “The Family Leadership Summit” — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson. The talks start at 10 a.m.
Former President Donald Trump, the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, is not slated to appear. Neither is former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, the candidate who has been the most critical of Trump on the campaign trail.
Following the forum, Carlson will appear on a special episode of “Glenn TV,” for what is being billed as “an intimate conversation” with another former Fox News host, Glenn Beck.

James Dobson, a trusted advisor on faith issues to several American presidents, has issued a dire warning about President Joe Biden’s plan to surrender the nation’s sovereignty to the World Health Organization (Who). After his indictment on 34 felony counts Tuesday, Donald Trump sought out a faithful audience, joining a conference call with Christian supporters who see him as not simply battling a liberal prosecutor, but ensnared in a “demonic situation.”
Trump’s longtime religious adviser Paula White Cain, working with an evangelical group called Intercessors for America, organized an “Emergency Prayer Call” for Trump. (In Christianity, intercessors are people who pray to God on behalf of others.)

Real evil will always be a tantalizing go-to for storytellers, and in the case of notorious serial killer Ted Bundy, it’s meant at least nine at-bats across film and television for handsome, ambitious actors (from ‘80s-era heartthrob Mark Harmon to post-Disney Zac Efron) to twist looks, charisma and pathology into a portrait of chill, guy-next-door monstrosity.
Could Luke Kirby’s turn, as the death-row Bundy, be the best yet? Even if director Amber Sealey’s crisp, compelling indie docudrama “No Man of God” is the second Bundy film this year alone, not counting documentaries? Pardon the competitive shading to that question, but in the Hannibal Lecter era, screen madmen have mostly been muscle-flexing attempts at nerve-jangling one-upmanship, so it’s a comparison most films welcome.
And Bundy, convicted of murdering three women but certainly guilty of killing, raping and kidnapping countless more, has become a true-crime cottage industry, to...

In the wake of the Atlanta massage parlor shootings last week, in which eight people were murdered, there was much anguish and sober-minded discussion on social media placing the attack in the context of increasing rates of anti-Asian violence, the exploitation of Asian massage workers, and the historical fetishization of Asian women in general, who comprised a majority of the victims. This discussion was complicated by the fact that officials later revealed the shooter, 21-year-old Robert Long, was an evangelical Christian who reportedly claimed he targeted massage parlor workers because...

SAG-aftra is condemning a Friday night attack by a police officer on two of its member journalists who were covering a protest in Louisville, Ky.
“Last night, a Louisville, Ky police officer aimed and fired pepper balls at WAVE3 News reporter Kaitlin Rust and photographer James Dobson,” the union said Saturday. “Rust and Dobson are professional journalists represented by SAG-aftra who were on assignment covering protests arising out of the police killings of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd.”
“When the officer fired on them, they were following police instructions, behind police lines, and were not interfering with police activity,” SAG-aftra added. “Both Rust and Dobson were obviously in performance of their duties as journalists. They were carrying professional production equipment and Rust was wearing a bright yellow reflective vest.”
Taylor was fatally shot by Louisville Metro Police Department officers on March 13 at her apartment in Louisville while officers were serving a “no-knock warrant.

Updated 4 Pm with SAG-aftra Statement: A reporter for an NBC affiliate station in Louisville, Ky was fired upon by police Friday night during a live broadcast covering street protests in that city.
Kaitlin Rust, a journalist at Wave 3, was live on the air when a man wearing a mask and vest that said “police” began firing at her and a colleague.
The Louisville community was already angered by an earlier police shooting in a drug raid at the home of Breonna Taylor, an innocent victim of a wrong address mixup. The situation was further inflamed this week by the death of George Floyd, a Minneapolis man who died in police custody in that city.
The reporter’s shooting was posted to Twitter by a viewer and exceeded 1.5 million views within an hour.
In the video, Rust is heard screaming, “I’m getting shot!”
“Katie, are you Ok?” asked an in-studio anchor.

“Fox & Friends” had an unexpected cameo during some impromptu interviews at a diner in Lebanon, New Jersey, on Monday night.
As host Todd Piro questioned a voter in a red “Make America Great Again” hat, he found himself upstaged by a boy sitting at a booth just behind him.
At various moments, the young man, wearing a smart blazer and collared shirt, put his face into his palms in disgust. At other moments, he shook his head and appeared to say something to the older man with him across the table.
“Fox & Friends interviews NJ diners. Boy in background reacts for America,” said Mediaite editor at large Colby Hall on Twitter.

“Fox & Friends” swung into action Friday after Oprah Winfrey’s strong embrace of Georgia Democratic gubernatorial nominee Stacey Abrams, with one guest warning viewers that the daytime queen was being used to as a left-wing prop to promote Socialism.
“I don’t think that her platform will help,” said Gop strategist Jenna Ellis. “Oprah really represents the far left’s socialist agenda and that’s not going to resonate in the mid-terms with the American family that cares about money in their pockets, cares about the economy, cares about the things that President Trump has done in terms of putting America first.”
Ellis said that Georgia voters would be much more inclined to embrace hard right religious figures James Dobson and Franklin Graham who would promote traditional “family values.”

Bono: David sang the blues and Jesus did some punk rock

(Rns) U2 frontman Bono exchanged Bible references and bantered about music, theology and evangelicals’ role in AIDS activism in a recent radio interview with Focus on the Family President Jim Daly.
Growing up in Ireland with a Protestant mother and a Catholic father, Bono imitated C.S. Lewis in “Mere Christianity,” where Lewis argued that Jesus was a lunatic, liar or Lord.
“When people say ‘Good teacher,’ ‘Prophet,’ ‘Really nice guy,’ … this is not how Jesus thought of himself,” Bono said. “So, you’re left with a challenge in that, which is either Jesus was who he said he was or a complete and utter nut case.”

Ten years ago, in early October 2002, The Wall Street Journal became the first major media publication to wonder aloud if that queer little fellow who lives in a pineapple under the sea might really be, well, queer. "Something About 'SpongeBob' Whispers 'Gay' to Many Men" was their headline of choice, and the solid case they made for his sexuality — life partner is an ebullient male starfish; neighbor is a classical music-loving, bubble bath-taking squid who channls Paul Lynde; favorite TV show is a super gay Batman parody called Mermaid Man and Barncale Boy — set off a firestorm among Conservatives. Nickelodeon was quick to shoot down the queer question, but that didn't stop the hysteria. James Dobson of Focus on the Family was one of the first responders, proclaiming that if SpongeBob was, indeed, a HomoPants, the cartoon was the most dangerous program a Baptist kid could watch.

[1] Now that New York has become the sixth state to legalize gay marriage, it was probably only a matter of time before people got to wondering when one of the state's most famous and beloved pair of long-term partners would be tying the knot. The couple in question is Bert and Ernie, puppets and opposites-attract besties who reside on New York City's (fictional) Sesame Street. A petition is currently circulating which asks PBS to "let" the pair make their alleged love legal. Oh sure, the two may claim to be "just friends" on the show, but plenty of people over the years have wondered -- some jokingly, some more seriously -- if the relationship runs deeper than the show is willing to admit. Read more after the jump. While this may be the first time some Sesame Street fans are hearing about this sorta-controversy, Bert and Ernie actually have a...

In case you've been living under a rock somewhere, new dads Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka have an in-home photo spread in this past week's People magazine. They appear with fraternal twins (born via surrogate) Harper Grace and Gideon Scott. The children are adorable, but I'm having mixed feelings about this presentation of domestic bliss.
To be honest, if this were a famous straight couple I would probably think the artfully posed photo spread was a little cheesy. Like something you would see in Britain's Hello! magazine from a lower-tier celebrity anxious for some controlled, positive press coverage.
I mean, is this the sort of thing that gold-standard, above-it-all stars like Brad and Angelina would do with their kids? Probably not.
And yet, Neil and David are not a straight celebrity couple. The very fact that they are out and gay and procreating invests this photo spread with political implications and cultural heft.

All right, I'm finally sick and tired of this.
With the previews beginning to leak out from Spider-Man's "One Moment In Time" story, which they claim will be the magic bullet that retconned Spider-Man's marriage, I can stay silent no longer.
Everybody says "Oh, they'll never put Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson back together." And every time somebody says so, I can't help but think of Latka and Simka.
In the two part Taxi episode, "Scenskees From A Marriage", Latka (Andy Kaufman) strays from his marriage to Simka (Carol Kane) and due to their cultural restrictions, they must break up. To explain where I see all of this heading, we now must show the climactic scene of the divorce (jump ahead to about 2:55, if you must):
Now, there's another thing to consider. The comics industry, for all of its maturing and stabilization, still remembers the scare of censors and the like.

Ed Kennedy will be back with a full on Meme this afternoon. Just a few odds and ends worth discussing this morning....
Evan Lysacek deserves props for trying to defuse the feud he and Johnny Weir have going. He issued a public statement via Us Weekly where he basically waves the white flag. He acknowledges that Weir is "an accomplished and talented skater." and then went on to say that "since the Olympics, I've dealt with Johnny's questioning my integrity and sexuality, and I've never spoken out on my own behalf no matter how hurtful those things may have been. I should have known better." "Best wishes and congratulations to Johnny as he opens the new season of Ice Theatre of New York," Lycasek adds. "I wish him well in all of his future endeavors."
Well good for Lysacek! Now let's see if Weir responds graciously.
Criminy, how many homo-hating...

Focus on the Family philosopher-king James Dobson, the prayerful rain-monster who begged God/the clouds to deliver “abundant, torrential” downpour during Obama’s nomination acceptance speech, has another important announcement. He is now supporting Ron Paul’s son Rand Paul for the Kentucky Republican Senate primary and not Trey Grayson as previously stated. “Senior members of the Gop told me Dr. Paul is pro-choice and that he opposes many conservative perspectives, so I endorsed his opponent. But now I've received further information from Ob/GYNs in Kentucky whom I trust, and from interviewing the candidate himself,” he said, according to Tpm.

Pretty near everything Glenn Beck says strikes me as absurd, but he scored a perfect 10 when he warned his viewers against the dangers of Christianity. You already know all about it. Well, maybe not, because the usual defenders of Christianity, like James Dobson and Pat Robertson, were very quiet on the topic. Not even a peep from Pat about this man who showed every sign of having hired the best lawyers to draft his pact with Satan.
Many other Christians were not so silent Dr. David P. Gushee, Professor of Christian Ethics at Mercer University, wrote: "He managed to do something few have been able to do -- speaking only of my own religious community, he has united Catholics and Protestants, evangelicals and mainliners, Christian progressives and moderates and conservatives."
What were Beck's unifying words? "I beg you, look for the words social justice or economic justice on your church web site,...

Tim Tebow. By Dave Martin/AP Photo. The Tim Tebow ad that is scheduled to run on Super Bowl Sunday on CBS with the message “Celebrate Family. Celebrate Life” is a stroke of genius. It has all the elements of a hero’s journey story told by a Heisman Trophy-winning, virginal star athlete, who goes to battle on the football field with biblical verses painted under his eyes. His battle call is for Jesus first, family second, football third. He has won championships along with the hearts of many Americans, and ultimately the attention of James Dobson’s radical anti-choice, anti-gay, anti-feminist group Focus on the Family, which is paying for this commercial. Tebow has his mother to thank for choosing to give birth rather than take the advice of doctors and choosing an abortion in the Philippines in 1987. Who could possibly find that ad offensive? What person in their...

It looks like the commercials for the Super Bowl just got a little less hilarious, or more depending on your personal viewpoints and political persuasions.
CBS has eased the restrictions on selling spots to advocacy groups during the single most important television advertising event of the year and said it would consider "responsibly produced" ads for the Super Bowl broadcast on February 7.
The issue arose when an anti-abortion group wanted to air an ad funded by James Dobson's Focus on the Family advocacy group starring 2007 Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow. Honestly, who cares? Why all this controversy over a commercial? Does it involve singing dogs or the Budweiser lizards discussing the point at which life begins? Am I the only person in the universe who watches the Super Bowl... to watch the actual Super Bowl?

Q: I recently watched a new series from USA Network titled White Collar, and I was stunned by the gorgeousness of the lead character, Neal, played by the beautiful Matthew Bomer. I can't seem to find much info about him. Mind to fill in more? -- rcLoy, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Matthew Bomer in White Collar
A: Bomer is from Houston where his father was a Dallas Cowboy. He was a high school (and, later, acting school) classmate of Pushing Daisies’ Lee Pace. He started on soaps, almost played Superman in the latest Superman movie, and co-starred on the TV show Tru Calling (with Eliza Dushku) and in the movie Flight Plan (with Jodie Foster), and also had a reoccurring role on Chuck.

How do I know Mel White is a busy guy? Five minutes into our interview to talk about his recent participation on the reality show The Amazing Race with his son, actor/screenwriter Mike White, he’s interrupted by Anderson Cooper’s producer who wants to confirm an appearance on CNN later that day. The day before, White had been on Fresh Air with Terry Gross.
How do I know Mel White is a nice guy? He couldn’t be more apologetic about CNN’s interruption. And he couldn’t be more gracious and unhurried in our conversation, which touched on everything from how he wished The Amazing Race’s had been more “gay,” to how their battery of psychological tests found him to be their most a “paranoid” participant ever – but for good reason!
Interestingly, despite being perhaps the country’s most well-known gay Christian activist, White was almost...
