Martin Amis’ 1984 novel “Money,” inspired by his painful experiences as the screenwriter of the disastrous 1980 sci-fi movie “Saturn 3,” includes a character based on “Saturn 3” star Kirk Douglas: “Lorne Guyland,” an aging but still virile screen legend, “had, in his time, on stage or screen, interpreted the roles of Genghis Khan, Al Capone, Marco Polo, Huckleberry Finn, Charlemagne, Paul Revere, Erasmus, Wyatt Earp, Voltaire, Sky Masterson, Einstein, Jack Kennedy, Rembrandt, Babe Ruth, Oliver Cromwell, Amerigo Vespucci, Zorro, Darwin, Sitting Bull, Freud, Napoleon, Spider-Man, Macbeth, Melville, Machiavelli, Michelangelo, Methuselah, Mozart, Merlin, Marx, Mars, Moses and Jesus Christ.”
And while “Money” is not, on the whole, particularly kind to Kirk Douglas, this list does reflect the breadth and scope of a screen career that started in 1946 and culminated in the early 21st century.

Michael Douglas is full of praise for step-parents - because his mother's second husband was like a "surrogate father" to the star as he grew up.
The Wall Street legend's mother, Diana Dill, divorced the actor's dad, Kirk Douglas, in 1951 and went on to marry Bill Darrid.
He became a strong father figure for Michael as a teenager - and the 66 year old is sure his mother's newfound love renewed his belief in marriage.
Douglas tells Britain's The Guardian, "I was really blessed that my mother remarried a great, great guy. Step-parents never get enough credit. You know, it's always the wicked stepmother or stepfather but the truth is, there are so many more step-parents who have assumed the responsibility of raising kids that are not theirs and I was really lucky.
"He was my surrogate father from when I was 12 up until adulthood. Kirk would be the first one to acknowledge that. He was a great listener, which is a tough thing to find, and I got to watch a lovely marriage - so it reaffirmed and reassured me that marriages can work."
Darrid died in 1992 and Dill went on to remarry in 2002.

Michael Douglas found his father Kirk "intimidating" when he was a child - because the Spartacus star was "consumed with ambition" as he pursued his Hollywood career.
The veteran actor was 27 years old when he and then-wife Diana Dill welcomed Michael in 1944 and Kirk's film career kicked off shortly afterwards.
And Michael admits he was overwhelmed seeing his father working on such massive movies.
He tells Britain's The Guardian, "Kirk's career was constant, overwhelming - the guy didn't stop. Back then they were doing five movies a year. My father did 90-plus films. He was Spartacus!
"I always admired his tenacity and stamina but he was intimidating to me as a child. Like a lot of actors, he was consumed with ambition and his career."...

Michael Douglas is feeling philosophical. "The timing sucks, but that's just the way it goes," he says. He is talking about the stage four throat cancer that he first revealed in August and for which he is in the middle of radio- and chemotherapy. Chatting about it, he is refreshingly unguarded.
