When audio engineer Peggy McCreary was recording Prince for his 1999 album, she didn’t immediately recognize his genius. “I had no idea who he was when I first started working with him,” she recalls. She had met him around the time he made his third LP, Controversy, and unlike Prince, who was in his early twenties, she had a string of hit albums in her list of credits, including Van Halen’s debut and Elton John’s 21 at 23. She watched Prince jump from instrument to instrument, recording and mixing songs...

Prince’s former guitarist Dez Dickerson cannot believe the autopsy report that showed the iconic rocker died of an overdose of the painkiller fentanyl. “The Prince I’ve known and the Prince the folks that I’ve known in association with him over the years … drug overdose would not be something that we would even think of in a sentence with his name,” Dickerson told Fox News. Dickerson met Prince after answering an ad in the paper stating that a Warner Bros. recording artist was looking for a new guitarist. After a 15-minute audition in the back of a tire shop and a conversation.

Dez Dickerson was 23 when he auditioned for a young performer named Prince in 1979. After 15 minutes, he was hired as lead guitarist for the singer’s band. Over the next five years, while becoming an international sensation, Dickerson and Prince shared some extraordinary experiences, not least of which were discussions about religion, philosophy and sometimes politics. Dickerson says he was “a fairly radical liberal, striving to be a junior hippie” at the time and, from all indications, Prince had a similar outlook on life. But on Dec. 22, 1980 at 11:30 p.m. in his living room at 2409

Prince's conversion to the Jehovah's Witness religion actually started, in a roundabout way, with Sly & the Family Stone. Well, that's not entirely accurate: It started with Graham Central Station, the funk group started by Sly and the Family Stone bassist Larry Graham after his tenure in that band. "I was on tour with Sinbad, Graham Central Station, Earth Wind & Fire and Teena Marie," Graham explained in 2013. "We did a show in Tennessee and we were playing the amphitheater and Prince was playing the big arena there in Nashville. He heard I was in town and invited me to one of his famous after-shows.
