A decade before Knight and Day was released, a movie like it would have killed with audiences: Come on, it starred Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz and looked to perfectly mash humor and action in a way that so few male/female-led action-comedies had for years. Yet, it didn’t connect. But why? There are a lot of reasons, really, and not just, as Roy Miller would say, “one of those things.” Through lousy marketing, hokey promotion, poorly timed sneak previews, and even Katie Holmes, Knight and Day fizzled, less “beautiful dress” than beautiful mess…But it did at least inspire a Bollywood remake, so suck on that, Vanilla Sky! Let’s find out: What Happened to this Movie?!
Knight and Day began, as with so many Hollywood screenplays, as a spec script, or a work that is uncommissioned but written in hopes of selling it to a studio (think...

While Jackie Chan has always been an affable and comedic performer, even going back to his early martial arts films from the 1970s, something curious happened when he broke into the Hollywood mainstream in the late 1990s. Producers looked at Chan's playful, heroic, somewhat goofy charm and shifted it into overdrive. Chan's American films, as a result, tended to be incredibly broad, full of silly mugging, "culture clash" humor, and a general lack of stakes. Chan's first major American hit was Brett Ratner's "Rush Hour" in 1998, a serviceable but largely unremarkable police comedy wherein Chan played opposite Chris Tucker. That film was such a runaway success (it made over 244 million worldwide) that a pattern was immediately set for Chan. Pair him with an unlikely co-star, put him in generic action scenarios, and watch the money roll in.

Pallavi Sharda didn’t have to look far to get into character for “Wedding Season.” The Australian actor and dancer stars in the Netflix rom-com as Asha, a New Jersey-raised attorney being pressured by her Indian parents to find a man and get married. To get them off her back, she convinces one of her set-ups (Suraj Sharma) to pretend that they’re dating during a summer wedding season.
“When I read the script, I just thought, ‘I know this story,’” says Sharda, who is best known for her Bollywood career and television work in Australia. “I know this woman. I have friends that are this woman. I have family who grew up in Jersey, like a lot of my cousins are from this part of the world. And my grandparents migrated to the U.S. in the 1980s. All of my maternal cousins are Indian Americans.”

Universal is usually strong on VOD charts, but this week it dominates by holding 13 out of 30 possible slots with the just-released “Minions: The Rise of Gru” (19.99) leading the way.
At Netflix, “Uncharted” is #1 and leads several in-house productions including “The Gray Man.” Its 200 million investment stands at #5 in its third week. Despite (or because of?) six months of theatrical play (and 149 million gross), as well as extensive VOD availability, the early-year hit starring Tom Holland may have a longer stay at the top than Netflix originals.
Google Play, which tends to lag several days behind iTunes, still has Universal’s “Jurassic World: Dominion” (19.99) at #1, with “Minions” second; elsewhere, it’s #1. Among Universal”s other releases, are high placements for “The Black Phone” (19.99) and two slots each for “The Bad Guys” (5.99) and new release “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” (19.99) from its Focus subsidiary.

Pallavi Sharda pulled double duty for Netflix's latest rom-com "Wedding Season." In addition to starring in the film alongside "How I Met Your Father"'s Suraj Sharma, the 32-year-old actor and dancer also choreographed an epic Bollywood dance number for the movie's final scene.
The Netflix original centers on faux-couple Asha (Sharda) and Ravi (Sharma) who pretend to date in order to survive a summer of weddings, which they've been forced to attend by their parents. However, Asha and Ravi eventually develop feelings for each other and begin dating for real. As Asha continues to explore her relationship with Ravi, she is also busy helping her sister Priya (Ari Afsar) plan her wedding to her fiancé Nick (Sean Kleier). The film actually ends with Priya and Nick's reception, which includes the dance scene that Sharda choreographed.

A couple fake-dates for Indian wedding season in a serviceable mashup of tropes that’s enjoyable enough to watch
Wedding Season, a lively romcom set in the Indian American community of Newark, New Jersey, has the full signature of the House of Netflix. Its plot is a blend of cliches, its set design somewhere between serviceable and cheap, its acting either solidly watchable or borderline parody. It rearranges deeply familiar tropes into easy listening. It depicts a community in the US with enough knowledge to feel grounded and respectful, but with enough frivolity and romance to cater to, naturally, the global audience. Because of or despite these things, it’s baseline enjoyable to watch, its entertainment value less in how it makes you think or feel and more in how easy it is to submit to floating along the emotional current.

I had a great time talking to Pallavi Sharda and Suraj Sharma, stars of the upcoming Netflix film “Wedding Season.” In the film, they play would-be-lovers matched by their parents. Global Indian origin actors Pallavi Sharda and Suraj Sharma star in Netflix romantic comedy “Wedding Season,” directed by “Shanghai Noon” and “Showtime” filmmaker Tom Dey.
Variety has secured access to an exclusive clip from the film, which is produced by Imagine Entertainment, in association with Jax Media and Samosa Stories. The lead producer is Samosa’s Swati Shetty, who previously had senior management stints with Imagine, Netflix and Disney India and produced “Umrika,” starring Sharma, which won awards at Sundance, Palm Springs and Cairo.
As a studio executive, Shetty shepherded Disney India’s first live action film “Do Dooni Char,” and Netflix’s “Love Per Square Foot,” “Rajma Chawal” and “Lust Stories.” “All these were films that I pushed for and championed from the studio side — so clearly, this is not the first in that sense,” Shetty told Variety. “I love these kinds of films. And we couldn't help but wonder: To leave the nest, do some men just need a little push? That was the basic premise of Failure to Launch, the 2006 rom-com starring Sarah Jessica Parker as a woman whose job it is to get men to move out of their parents' home and Matthew McConaughey as her latest client. What a time! Directed by Tom Dey, Failure to Launch didn't exactly get a passing grade from critics, but went on to gross over $130 million at the box office after its March 10 release. While it hasn't quite measured up to other romantic comedies of the era, the movie did have a pretty stacked cast, including Bradley Cooper as the sidekick, Zooey Deschanel as the quirky Bff and Terry Bradshaw as...

Snatch Season 2 – HeyUGuys travel to Spain to meet Rupert Grint, Lucien Laviscount & the cast on set
Back in May, HeyUGuys had the privilege of jet-setting over to the hot yet blustery hills of Malaga. The purpose of our journey was to join the returning cast of Snatch on set for the filming of season two of the heist comedy-drama. We had the pleasure of a tour around the set of the Spanish country home of The Hill gang as well as having a chat with the main cast members.
At the end of season one – after the youngest hustlers of the Hill gang were triumphant in making off with a boatload of gold bullion – the whole crew set off into the sunset on a yacht for a much needed holiday. However, there is no rest for the wicked. In season two, the team is on the lam and what begins as a well-deserved vacation quickly becomes a face-off with a local kingpin; another thrill-a-minute fight to save their fortune,...

“No one, and I mean no one wanted to make this movie.”

The third Shanghai movie, Shanghai Dawn, is finally on, it seems...
Now here's a threequel (yeah, we used that word. Not our finest hour) that we never really thought would happen. Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson are reuniting for the very belated Shanghai Dawn.
A quick recap on the series so far. Shanghai Noon was an excellent series opener, and a solid hit. The sequel, Shanghai Knights, wasn't up to the same standard, and the box office fizzled a bit (although it still did respectable numbers). Plans for chapter three were quietly put away.
Now, 12 years later, the project is back on. It's early stages, as the hunt is currently on for screenwriters. It's unclear too whether directors Tom Dey (Noon) or David Dobkin (Knights) would return. Thus far, it's just Wilson and Chan who are confirmed to be back.
More on Shanghai Dawn as we hear it. We hope this one gets made,...

The American West was a strange, tragic and occasionally hilarious place, especially in the world of film. From "True Grit" and "Shane" to "Westworld" and "Blazing Saddles," movies have thrown just about everything they can muster at cowboy-hatted icons like John Wayne and Yul Brynner.
2011's "Cowboys and Aliens" is hardly the first movie to mix Western elements in with science fiction or ridiculous monsters. For almost as long as Hollywood has been making movies about lawlessness and bandits, filmmakers have been finding ways to make the West weird. So while we do tip our Stetsons to Mel Brooks, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen and every other innovator of the cowboy movie genre, these ten films burned new brands onto cowboy stories as an institution and truly set themselves apart as the most surreal buckaroo films ever made.

'Piranha 3D' Writer Mentions Secret Hasbro Project; Updates 'To Catch a Thief,' 'Man-Witch' and More
Nobody can accuse the writer behind 'Piranha 3D,' 'Sorority Row' and 'Good Luck Chuck,' Josh Stolberg of not staying busy. In an interview with Movie Hole, the man went over the glossary of films that he's currently attached to, starting with the remake of the 1955 film from Alfred Hitchcock, 'To Catch a Thief.' On the project, he said: "I wrote, with Bobby [Florsheim], a remake of 'To Catch a Thief' for Paramount. Neal Moritz is producing, and it’s exciting because it’s one of my favourite Hitchcock movies and it was fun to come at it from a different angle – make it a little bit more modern and 'gadgety.' It’s the first script that I’ve ever written that [encompasses] a lot of heists and action sequences and.. it was a blast! I’m really excited. We just turned in...

This is the review for Marmaduke (directed by Tom Dey and starring Emma Stone, Judy Greer, William H. Macy, Kiefer Sutherland, Owen Wilson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jeremy Piven and Steve Coogan). Written by Pure Movies writer Joe Fraser. The history books will show that among the very best films of our age are a good many that bid to captivate children and adults alike. This golden era for family movies has Pixar as its consistently masterful touchstone. Venture then into the world of family friendly cinema and it is their company you have to keep. In spite of all the talent and money involved, Marmaduke doesn’t bother to compete. If someone ever writes a book on talking dog movies, a footnote on Marmaduke would be generous.

Chicago – How do complete disasters like “Marmaduke” get made? Shouldn’t there be some sort of quality insurance and when a studio sees that a film is this execrable, they are allowed to pull some sort of last-minute ripcord and make sure it’s never inflicted on paying customers? Wouldn’t that be a good use of our tax dollars?
Blu-Ray Rating: 1.0/5.0
The most remarkable thing about “Marmaduke” is that it has No target demographic. This is lazy, boring, forgettable mass-market entertainment that doesn’t appeal to little girls, is too sentimental for little boys, and could cause dog lovers to write letters about the mistreatment of animals. There’s simply no audience for junk this horrendous.
There are awful family movies released every year that would still appeal to the little ones, but when did they start letting kids write them? “Marmaduke” is the story of a lovable-but-huge Great...

How is the week going people? My last month or so has been very hectic and I don't see it slowing down anytime soon. I suppose I would rather have a hectic life then a boring life though. This last week I gained the power to tweet via cell phone woot! Hopefully I can come up with some more interesting stuff to say now haha. Having been cell-phone-less for years I am having to readjust. Meaning my phone rang yesterday and I did not hear it but the person I was with did and asked if I was going to answer it. Doh. Anyways....
Oh man! So many great shows releasing to DVD this week! Almost all of them I actually watch too which is cool. Let's start with a few movies releasing.

This is a competition for Marmaduke, directed by Tom Dey and starring Owen Wilson, Emma Stone, George Lopez, Raugi Yu, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Steve Coogan, Stacy Ferguson, Kiefer Sutherland, Marlon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr. Marmaduke, the world’s most lovable Great Dane, leaps from comic strip fame (appearing in 600 newspapers in over 20 countries) to big screen stardom. In this family comedy event, the super-sized, ultra-awkward lap dog is living the good life with the Winslow family, including beleaguered dad Phil, Phil’s wife Debbie, their three children, and feline pal Carlos.

A couple years back, we heard straight from writer/director David Gordon Green that he was working on a remake of the kids racing flick Six Pack. The Playlist says the project started as an original script called Burnin' Rubber but Fox, in all their infinite wisdom, asked him if he could re-write it as the aforementioned remake. Well, Pajiba reports that with all this remake nonsense, Green is no longer involved as the director and instead has opted to attach Kevin James to star with filmmaker Tom Dey, who helmed this summer's comedy classic Marmaduke, directing instead. Here's another project that has gone to hell in a handbasket. Green will still apparently stay on as producer, but John Coveny and Hunt Baldwin, who are the writers and producers of TNT's "The Closer," have taken over writing duties on the script and are working on a rewrite. This is really...

- Can Amanda Seyfried personify both Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella? She's been cast as the former for a while, and now she's rumored to be starring in a live-action version of the latter for Disney, based on the studio's animated classic. The redo comes via screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada) and will likely be in 3D with plenty of CGI mice and birds. Bippidy-Boppidy-Boo-Hoo. [via The Playlist]
- Maybe love will turn me around, but I'm having trouble accepting Kevin James in the Kenny Rogers role for Fox's Six Pack remake. Pajiba reports that he's been offered the part, leading me to assume racing star Brewster Baker will no longer be the kind of ladies man he was back in '82. Also, now at the helm, replacing David Gordon Green, is Marmaduke's Tom Dey. I guess I just hope the eventual redo of The Beniker Gang will make amends.

I absolutely cannot imagine a movie featuring Kenny Rogers, Diane Lane, and Anthony Michael Hall, but that's because I never saw the 1982 guilty pleasure Six Pack. I almost feel bad about not having had seen it, but for the fact that it's also about race car driving, and I don't really want any part of a movie about race car driving that's not making fun of race car driving.
At any rate, earlier this year, it was reported that David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express, Your Highness) was developing a remake of Six Pack, and that was all well and good, and I'd have expected Green's remake to be something akin to Richard Linklater's remake of The Bad News Bears. We can't really begrudge good directors their guilty pleasures, but it's not like we have to like them.
Anyway, Green -- who was once attached to write and direct -- is no longer aboard.

Tom Dey has never proven himself to be an especially subtle filmmaker, having directed Showtime, Shanghai Noon and Faliure to Launch. But Marmaduke is something else, something far broader and (therefore) more kid-friendly, placing it right in the same ballpark as Fox's other talking-animal flicks like Garfield and Alvin and the Chipmunks (that is to say, temporarily diverting for children; more or less torture for grown-ups). The under-ten crowd will no doubt delight by the goofy voices, the doggy dancing, the sprinkled-in scatological stuff, while the adults ... well, for any adult, to watch Marmaduke is to stare into the gaping, digitally-enhanced maw of fluffy mediocrity for a ninety-minute stretch of valuable lifetime.

Marmaduke
Directed by: Tom Dey
Cast: Owen Wilson, Emma Stone, Kiefer Sutherland, George Lopez, Lee Pace
Running Time: 1 hr 27 mins
Rating: PG
Release Date: June 4, 2010
Plot: The film follows the exploits of an over-sized great dane and his family as they all are forced to deal with their move from heartland Kansas to sunny So Cal.
Who’S It For? This is one for the kids. Sure, they may not even know who Marmaduke is, but if it’s a talking animal, it’s usually more for the children than their parents.
Expectations: Low doesn’t even begin to cover it. I never liked the comic very much and when it comes to talking animals, particularly dogs, if it isn’t Homeward Bound I’m usually not interested.
Scorecard (0-10)

Based on the comic strip, Marmaduke is the latest family-friendly, beginning of the summer offering from 20th Century Fox. The big, lovable Great Dane finds his voice in none other than Marley And Me’s Owen Wilson. After receiving a job offer from organic dog food president Don Twombly (William H. Macy), ambitious father, Phil Winslow (Lee Pace), uproots his Kansas family, along with Marmaduke and the loopy, family cat (George Lopez), and moves them to the O.C. What person, and canine, wouldn’t want to leave the midwest for a house complete with a pool, a million dollar ocean view and a big doggie door?

It’s tempting simply to note that director Tom Dey bookends Marmaduke with fart jokes, and leave it at that. Dey’s cinematic adaptation of Brad Anderson’s widely tolerated comic strip about a giant, awkward dog is meant for kids. Kids love dogs and fart jokes. The goods are being delivered to the target audience. All others should look away. But leaving it there would mean ignoring the full, awkward flavor of the movie, which opens with the eponymous dog speaking in the voice of Owen Wilson about the difficulties of being a teenager. Whether he means he’s ...

Are you ready for the next crappy dog movie? Oh it's coming, folks! Tom Dey's "Marmaduke" hits theaters June 4, 2010, and a new trailer for the family flick has just debuted online. What can I say? Check out the stinking preview after the jump. Beware though: it may cause your eyes and ears to die a little. The film is based on the popular comic strip, and in case I haven't mentioned it already, it looks shitty.
Owen Wilson voices the lead character, a Great Dane who gets in trouble all the time. That's as far as I can get with story. Also on board is George Lopez, who gets to voice yet another stupid animal. The trailer below isn't funny, and I'm already dreading the movie's opening day. Voice cast also includes Emma Stone, Ron Perlman, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Fergie. Yawn... time to wrap this up.
