Director: Greg Derochie.
Writers: Greg Derochie, and Charles Scalfani.
Cast: B. Anthony Cohen, Kieron Elliott and Amber Jaeger.
Very rarely will a movie suck audiences into its narrative. Solitary does exactly that, and to have one mystery following after one another, will only result in a blending of a psychological thriller and perhaps even a supernatural tale to boot.
Independent films rarely get theatrical justice, and the only way to see true gems is to hit the film festivals or to buy a video release. As this movie slowly becomes more emotionally charged, the feeling viewers may get are that of curiousity; who’s mind are we exploring and how will this film end?
There are several solutions, but which one is it? That’s the wonderful suspense Solitary builds on, since it looks into the life of, appropriately enough,...

"The Resident" (2011)
Directed by Antti Jokinen
Released by Image Entertainment
This actually isn't the first time Hilary Swank has seen one of her films go direct to DVD after the films "Red Dust" and "Birds of America" suffered the same fate, but surely there was more riding on this horror film from the resurgent Hammer Films about a recently separated doctor who learns her Brooklyn loft isn't quite as wonderful as she thought it would be. "Secretary" screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson co-wrote this film, which co-stars Christopher Lee, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Lee Pace.
"The Mikado" (1939)
Directed by Victor Schertzinger
Released by Criterion Collection
"Topsy-Turvy" (1999)
Directed by Mike Leigh
Released by Criterion Collection
Sold separately, Criterion is making no secret of trying to appeal to Gilbert and Sullivan fanatics with special editions of "The Mikado," a straight-up adaptation of the musical duo's most famous opera, and Mike Leigh's "Topsy-Turvy,...

Solitary is an independent film from Formation Films, which is slated for a release March 29th, 2011. Osiris Entertainment will distribute and this film, from visual effects master Greg Derochie (Alice in Wonderland), is a suspenseful ride through one woman's constantly changing psyche. Reviewing this film and not giving away core details is difficult, but centrally this is a film of grief and coming to terms with the limits of medicine.
In brief and leaving out some of the major plot developments, Solitary finds an agoraphobic woman breaking down under the pressure of disturbing images. Her husband is missing and visions of a deceased child hint at her current state. A bird named Emily also gives clues to Sara's (Amber Jaeger) condition.

The film is in the vein of a psychological thriller and fans of original cinema and living on the westcoast can see Solitary for themselves in West Hollywood June 4th. Making an independent film is already hard enough, but you also have to get the word out so people can see it. This is where we come in, the movie bloggers. I spoke with writer/director Greg-Derochie, who has a film playing at Cinequest called Solitary. The film’s about a house ridden agoraphobic woman. She’s somehow lost her husband, and during the process, starts to lose her mind.

If you live in or around San Jose, California, I hope you've been keeping an eye on Cinequest, a local film fest honoring new and emerging voices in independent cinema. The event actually started last Tuesday but don't worry, it doesn't end until this coming Sunday (March 7th, for those without a calendar in eye shot). Between now and then you've got two chances to check out the world premiere of Greg Derochie's feature film debut, Solitary.
Derochie has actually been working in the visual effects industry for nearly two decades in varying capacities, though most of his work has been in the digital compositing realm on the likes of Starship Troopers, Spider-Man, I am Legend and more. But judging from the exclusive clip from Solitary (starring Amber Jaeger) Cinematical was given to premiere below, Derochie has put away his old tools of the trade to deliver what looks...
