It’s not often you hear news related to the 1978 cult classic Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (watch it Here), but this week we have Killer Tomatoes news to report two days in a row! Yesterday, we shared a three hour retrospective documentary that looked back at not just Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, but also the franchise that it spawned: three sequels and two seasons of an animated TV series. Now it has come to our attention that, forty-five years after it was released, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes is finally getting the novelization treatment!
Boasting a page count of 238, the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes novelization was written by Jeff Strand and has a release date of April 14. Copies can be pre-ordered on Amazon.
Here’s the description: UFOs! Bigfoot! Communists! The government has swiftly dealt with many a crisis… But can it survive the diabolical Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes?...

It’s mathematically impossible for me to hate anything with John Astin in it, which is probably why I have fond memories of watching Return of the Killer Tomatoes a handful of times as a kid. Revisiting it now as an adult with Arrow Video’s recent Blu-ray/DVD release, Return doesn’t really hold up as the hilarious farce I remembered it as, but despite some uneven jokes, for the most part it is still pretty entertaining and feels like the best Troma movie the Zucker brothers never made.
Released nearly ten years after its notorious predecessor, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, the sequel introduces a world in which the titular vegetables have now been outlawed after the “Great War” that pitted humans against their oversized tomato foes, forcing new generations to adapt to a tomato-free lifestyle. That doesn’t sit well with Professor Gangreen (John Astin, who would...

Speaking of horror-comedies and things returning, Return of the Killer Tomatoes was also recently released to Blu-ray, this time by the Us chapter of Arrow Video. I know, you’re thinking to yourself “Return of the Killer Tomatoes, really?” Yes, really, and honestly, it deserves every inch of the Criterion-like treatment that Arrow Video gives their releases. It’s not a great movie, and it definitely doesn’t retain a lot of the novelty established by the original, but it features a very young and sex-starved George Clooney, and even though it recycles a lot of footage, it’s actually a pretty fun time. It’s not up there with Return of the Living Dead, but it has a fan base, of which I am a member.

June is ending on a quiet note for horror and sci-fi home entertainment releases, as we only have six titles coming our way on June 28th.
Blue Underground has shown some love to two cult classics with their Blu-ray double feature of Circus of Fear and Five Golden Dragons, and Arrow Video is resurrecting another cult classic (albeit one that is a bit more recent) with their Return of the Killer Tomatoes Special Edition Blu-ray.
Other notable titles being released this Tuesday include Alien Strain, Shark Exorcist, Forgotten Tales, and Hotel Inferno.
Alien Strain (Mti Home Video, DVD)
After his girlfriend vanishes without a trace on a camping trip, he quickly goes from witness to suspect. Now, a year later, she returns to the very spot from which she was taken, but not like she was before.

Blood Bath, The Beast With 1,000,000 Eyes and Return Of The Killer Tomatoes: it's our latest DVD and Blu-ray round-up...
Britain is in a state of turmoil, with Brexit, political leadership spinning out of control and social media civil war already underway. As such, it has perhaps never been a more appropriate time for a release of John De Bello and Stephen Peace’s 1988 meditation on the path towards peace and racial tolerance, Return Of The Killer Tomatoes, out on Arrow Bluray.
Set ten years after the events of the Great Tomato War, as depicted in uncompromising detail in De Bello and Peace’s earlier epic, Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes, tomatoes – following the mutant, sentient, strain responsible for the deaths of many citizens – are now outlawed in the Us. As with all the best banned items, killer tomatoes have now gone underground, with a thriving black market...

A remake of John De Bello’s cult film Attack Of the Killer Tomatoes has been in the works for nearly 3 years, but nothing has been heard about it in a good while. However, Bello was asked by Undead Brainspasm about the status of the film. “No updates that I can share at the moment. I guess if they can remake ‘The Horror of Party Beach,’ then ‘Killer Tomatoes’ should be a lock, eh? Alas, even vicious veggies fall victim to the vagaries of Hollywood deal making. Anything is possible with ‘Killer Tomatoes’… while a remake remains a tantalizing possibility, to paraphrase William Goldman: ‘Ya never know’,” he said. So, it looks as though this film is safe from the remake disease running through Hollywood.
The film began a cult hit after its release and spawned several sequels, video games, an animated TV series, toys, comic books, and other merchandising.

For the many ill-wishers out there, the most disappointing thing about M. Night Shyamalan's environmental thriller "The Happening" wasn't that it was a failure, but that it wasn't a spectacular failure. Critics went in with their long knives out, only to leave shrugging that they've seen worse. Having made $59 million in theaters, it's not even the box office bomb some expected after "Lady in the Water." All in all, "The Happening" is actually pretty successful, considering it's a serious horror film about trees... that kill! In honor of that dubious designation, here's a look at the spotty history of films about murderous botanic life that have preceded it.

M.O.: Produce that, for no apparent reason, become massive and murderous.
De Bello's broad comedy mocked B-movie conventions while bearing its reported $90,000 budget like a badge of honor.
