Oh, Joker, you little scamp. The Clown Prince of Crime is always getting into some mischief or other, whether it's dosing Gotham City with debilitating amounts of laughing gas in "Batman: The Animated Series," embarking on a terror campaign straight out of the US military playbook in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight," or starting beef with Common while having "Damaged" tattooed in his forehead in that one fever dream of a movie that we've collectively agreed upon to never mention again. But the supervillain is saving perhaps his most diabolical scheme for last.
At a time when most reasonable people would be thrilled to give Batman's arch nemesis a break from live-action movies for a few years (Zach Galifianakis' Joker in "The Lego Batman Movie" is forever innocent), Warner Bros. decided to double and now triple down on their most marketable bad guy around. Peter Crombie, best known for his disturbed character Crazy Joe Davola on Seinfeld, has passed away at the age of 71. While no specific details have been released, it’s said that Crombie died after a brief illness.
A standout character, Crazy Joe first appeared in season four’s “The Pitch”, launching his mission of vengeance after not being invited to Kramer’s party. Updated: Viacom is making significant cuts at Awesomeness, disclosing plans to lay off nearly 100 employees — or around half of the digital-media company it acquired last month from NBCUniversal, Verizon and Hearst.
In addition, as Viacom previously announced would happen, former Awesomeness CEO Jordan Levin has left the company.
While sources previously indicated Awesomeness was laying off more than 30 staffers this week, the cutbacks are much deeper than that. According to a notice filed with California’s Employment Development Department, Awesomeness will terminate 50 employees on Oct. 15; 33 who will be let go shortly after Oct. 15; and 15 who will lose their employment on Dec. 31.
Santa Monica-based Awesomeness filed the notice Aug. 16 with the agency under the requirements of the state’s Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (Warn) Act, which requires at least 60-day advance notice of mass layoffs. Awesomeness’ filing of the Warn notice was previously reported by Deadline.

“The Royals” has been dethroned. E! has canceled the one-hour Elizabeth Hurley-led drama after four seasons.
“E! will not be moving forward with another season of ‘The Royals,’ which launched in 2015 as the network’s first original scripted series,” a spokesperson for the network said in a statement to TheWrap. “Over four seasons, ‘The Royals’ took viewers behind the palace gates on a scandalous journey filled with twists and turns. Sources say that the show could continue at the cable network Pop, which is a joint venture between CBS Entertainment and Lionsgate Entertainment.

It’s official: Viacom closed a deal to acquire AwesomenessTV, a youth-oriented digital media company, as Viacom looks to expand its reach among digital-first audiences sandwiched in between its Nickelodeon and MTV brands.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed. However, a source said Viacom is paying well below $300 million for the digital-media company. The final price tag is considerably less than AwesomenessTV’s $650 million valuation after the company’s latest investment in 2016.
Word that Viacom was in advanced talks with the company — majority owned by Comcast/NBCUniversal, with stakes held by Verizon and Hearst — emerged earlier this week.
Awesomeness will be integrated into Viacom’s portfolio of brands and live within the Viacom Digital Studios division headed by president Kelly Day (pictured above), formerly chief business officer of Awesomeness.
According to Viacom, current AwesomenessTV CEO Jordan Levin, who has been with the company since May of 2017, will be leaving following a transition period post-acquisition.

Hulu has given a straight-to-series order to horror show “Light as a Feather,” which counts “Cheers” and “Frasier” alum Kelsey Grammer among its many executive producers.
The 10-episode thriller comes from Awesomeness TV, Wattpad, and Grammer’s Gramnet.
Based on Zoe Aarsen’s story “Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board,” which was originally published on Wattpad, the streaming version will highlight a slumber party gone wrong, as five girls begin dying off in the exact way the game predicts.
Production on the series is set to begin in June.
Lee Fleming Jr. created the adaptation and will executive produce the show. Other executive producers include Awesomeness TV’s Jordan Levin, Shelley Zimmerman, Joe Davola and Brett Bouttier.
Tom Russo, Brian Sher and Stella Bulochnikov from Gramnet and Aron Levitz and Eric Lehrman from Wattpad also all earn executive producer credits on the upcoming Hulu series.
“‘Light as a Feather’ is a captivating and unique story, with supernatural twists and thrills that readers all over the world have fallen in love with,” said Levitz, the head of Wattpad Studios. “The story is another example of a Wattpad fan favorite that is perfect for adaptation and new life on another platform. We’re excited to be working with AwesomenessTV and Hulu to bring ‘Light as a Feather’ to a new audience in a new format, while also giving the story’s millions of current fans another way to enjoy the story they couldn’t put down.”
“When I first joined Wattpad, I set out to create something unique, exploring characters and a world where female empowerment, friendship, and supernatural forces come together,” added Aarsen. “Wattpad is a place where people come together and connect over stories, discussing every twist and cliffhanger, so it was the perfect platform for my story. Teen horror is my passion, so I can’t wait to be able to share ‘Light as a Feather’ with other horror aficionados on Hulu.”

Awesomeness co-founder Brian Robbins to run division aimed at young audiences.
Paramount Pictures chief Jim Gianopulos has hired Brian Robbins to run Paramount Players, a division that will produce filmed content aimed at younger viewers in conjunction with the Viacom flagship brands.
The move follows comments by Viacom chief Bob Bakish earlier this year that Paramount needed to adopt a content strategy that aligned more closely with other brands in the Viacom stable such as Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central and Bet.
Awesomeness co-founder Robbins and his team at Paramount Players will develop projects with the flagship brands and Paramount Pictures will market and distribute the co-branded films with an emphasis on digital and social media campaigns.
Robbins, who announced in February he was leaving AwesomenessTV after Comcast acquired parent company DreamWorks Animation, will serve as president of Paramount Players and will report to Gianopulos when he joins the company later this month.
