Plot: Walden Dean an unassuming court stenographer in a small southern town, when he discovers he is dying, he decides to exact revenge on criminals who escaped their prosecution
Review: Emile Hirsch is one of those actors that, no matter the film, his performances stand out. While he plays the straight man very well, I’ve always enjoyed him more when he goes the more “out there” route. And his role as Walden is certainly a weird one. Walden Dean is a courtroom stenographer obsessed with breaking the typing world record. But when he’s told he’s dying, he decides he can no longer be an impartial observer, and takes matters into his own hands. And his sense of justice is quite…violent.
Don’t go into Walden expecting some kind of stereotypical trajectory of “Man takes justice into his own hands.” Sure, there are absolutely elements that feel...

"I hear innocence, and I hear evil. Sometimes... evil walks away." Uncork'd has revealed the trailer for a film called Walden, a revenge thriller written & directed by Mick Davis. This is getting a limited theatrical release in November before heading to VOD to watch. Walden Dean, an unassuming court stenographer in a small southern town, he discovers he is dying. So he decides to exact revenge on criminals who escaped their prosecution. The poster art for this has a "Dexter" vibe, which is probably what they're aiming for anyway. The "scales of justice" in blood is amusing, too. Starring Emile Hirsch as the titular Walden, with Shane West, Kelli Garner, Tania Raymonde, Steve Coulter, & David Keith. While this has a good concept, the footage looks like a made-for-tv Saturday night special presentation. Not much to worth watching here. // Continue Reading ›...

Italian producer Luciano Sovena, who was instrumental to bringing early works by several of Italy’s now-prominent auteurs such as Alice Rohrwacher, Luciano Frammartino, and Saverio Costanzo, to the big screen, has died. He was 73.
News of Sovena’s sudden death was announced on Sunday by the Rome and Lazio Film Commission Foundation, of which he was president. The cause of death was not disclosed.
The foundation paid tribute to Sovena as “A great and generous professional; a friend of Italian cinema,” in a statement. It went on to note that he was “Ironic, ‘simpatico’ and open to everyone.”
Prior to heading Rome’s film commission – which runs Italy’s top regional film fund – Sovena was for a long stretch managing director of Italy’s state film entity Istituto Luce.

In the wake of redefining the measurement of binge-watching on streaming, Netflix’s new top 10 film chart for the week of Nov. 8-14 lists Rawson Marshall Thurber’s $200M action feature Red Notice as the No. 1 film for the period with 148.7M hours watched since Nov. 12; easily the most watched movie ever on Netflix for a pic in its first weekend.
We reported yesterday that Samba TV clocked 4.2M U.S. households who tuned into the Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, Ryan Reynolds movie for at least five minutes, more than any Disney+ movie to date and HBO Max theatrical titles in their respective weekend debuts.
There was also some Johnson spillover in the top 10 from Red Notice with the first weekend of Sony’s Jumanji: The Next Level on Netflix which notched 10th place with 6.76M hours watched.

Another day, another new Netflix Christmas movie. Father Christmas is Back took my interest because of its cast. I can’t say I’m a huge fan of any of the actors (although I’ve seen most of them put in good performances) but it’s just such a random mix of people that thought I’d check out this festive movie.
So lets start with that cast. The biggest star and playing ‘Father’ Christmas (that’s the surname of the family) is Kelsey Grammer and he’s alongside this odd group of actors who I didn’t expect to see in a Netflix movie together – Elizabeth Hurley, Kris Marshall, John Cleese, Caroline Quentin, Katy Brand, Ray Fearon and Talulah Riley.

Slater Brothers Entertainment and Eden Vale are making time for their new indie horror project '3:30 A.M.' The two companies shook hands at this months Afm and struck a deal to produce the Mick Davis flick that Davis himself both penned and is expected to direct. The shoot is set to kick off next February in Romania and the production companies are eyeing up both Matt Dallas and the gloriously hot Briana Evigan -below ('Sorority Row', 'Mother's Day') for starring roles. We're finally going to get a movie based on the legendary Winchester Mystery House! I've been wondering when we would get to see an awesome movie based on this creepy old mansion. Hammer has announced that they've optioned the rights to develop a feature length horror film based on what's considered to be the “world’s most haunted house.”

Having toured the Winchester Mystery House personally, I can attest to the fact that the place is as odd as they come. Seriously weird. Windows in the floor. Doors that go nowhere. It's truly a sight and the perfect place for a ghost story based upon, well, the real life ghost stories!

With the huge popularity of Game of Thrones and Spartacus on HBO and Starz respectively, it would appear that sword and sandals genre is poised to make a comeback on the small screen. Now a couple of other shows are trying to jump on the bandwagon by tapping into similarly epic and pseudo-historical material. According to THR, a new series based on the Scottish hero William Wallace is in the works courtesy of Stv Productions. Tentatively titled Wallace, it will not be directly connected to the movie Braveheart nor will it use the Braveheart name, but it is based on an idea by Seoras Wallace, who served as an adviser on the film. The History Channel has also picked up their very first scripted series, a project from MGM Studios called simply Vikings. More details after the jump. The William Wallace series is being written and executive produced by Mick Davis (Eleventh Hour,...

Sword-flinging series Spartacus and Game Of Thrones have been doing rather well for their respective cable channels both in the Us and around the world. Across the gulf of television, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded their ratings and press coverage with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against them. Okay, so not “against them” per se, but some of the people involved in Braveheart are looking to muscle in on that sweet battle action by spearheading a TV version.Mick Davis, who worked on short-lived series Eleventh Hour, has created the new show, drawn from an idea by Kent Dalian and Seoras Wallace, who worked on Mel Gibson’s 1995 Oscar winner.According to the Hollywood Reporter, the planned series, which is still only in development, will focus on William Wallace’s back-story,...

Long before the likes of Starz’s Spartacus and HBO’s Game Of Thrones and their sword-and-sandals-and-sometimes-naked-people storytelling, Mel Gibson’s Braveheart combined epic battle scenes and bare asses to great success. So Braveheart has returned to reclaim what is rightfully his: A group of Scottish and American producers is preparing the TV drama Wallace, a small-screen retelling of the Scottish leader’s life said to be “in the vein of” those aforementioned shows, with all the sex and swordplay that implies. The Eleventh Hour’s Mick Davis will write and executive produce the project, which focuses on William Wallace ...

You can’t keep a Scottish freedom fighter down. Even after you’ve torn him to pieces, as it turns out. William Wallace, the hero of Mel Gibson’s 1995 war epic “Braveheart”, will be coming to the small screen if producer Mick Davis has anything to say about it. Davis will write and executive produce a TV show based on Wallace, a show that will delve into the Scottish hero’s back story, along with “his years spent attempting to unify Scotland, his loves and losses as well as his legendary battles with King Edward the Longshank and rival Robert the Bruce.” Gibson’s 1995 film starred Gibson as Wallace, a well-educated Scottish lad who returns home after years abroad to attempt to live a quiet life as a farmer. That goes out the window when his wife is killed, and ol Wallace decides to sack half of England in revenge.

Braveheart: The TV Show is in development. Scottish and American production companies are combining forces to develop Wallace, a serialized biopic of the Scottish leader that will be "stylistically in the vein of Spartacus and Game of Thrones," according to a release. The world eagerly awaits another swords-and-nudity fiesta, now with Scottish accents from the olden days! Eleventh Hour's Mick Davis will write and executive produce the show, which will focus on Wallace's backstory, romantic life, years of political agitation, and his ongoing rivalry with Robert the Bruce, plus the aforementioned swords and nudity.

A television series based on the life of William Wallace is currently in development. Mel Gibson famously starred as Scottish knight Wallace in the Oscar-winning 1995 film Braveheart. Braveheart is an awesome movie. As much as it may be historical fiction with an emphasis on fiction, that still makes it no less of an engaging, gripping, and very affective film. Which means I'm at the very least extremely curious about the historical drama entitled "Wallace" that is being developed by Mick Davis ("Eleventh Hour"), who will not only write and direct but also be the series' Executive Producer. The new show "will focus on Wallace's back...

The legendary Scottish hero, William Wallace, brought to life for the big screen by Mel Gibson in Braveheart, is getting a new TV series biopic. The historical drama series is based on the life of the war hero who fought for the freedom of Scotland.
The series is being created and written by Mick Davis (The Eleventh Hour), and according to THR "it will focus on Wallace's back story, his years spent attempting to unify Scotland, his loves and losses as well as his legendary battles with King Edward the Longshank and rival Robert the Bruce."
When Braveheart was released in 1995 I did extensive research on Wallace to get to know more about him, and find out what was true in the film and what wasn't. One thing's for sure, the guy was a complete badass, and if a series is being made based on his life, I'll be watching it.

TNT – “We know drama” – is developing, you guessed it, a new drama series. Penned by Mick Davis (Eleventh Hour), this action-adventure series is called Wasteland and promises to be more on the supernatural side of things.
According to Variety, the show will be set in the American Southwest and “involves a U.S. marshal who is charged with hunting down the supernatural escapees on the run following a federal prison break.”
“Supernatural escapees” brings to mind the days of Reaper or Clark hunting down Phantoms in Smallville, but I’m sure as we get more details Wasteland will prove itself far different from anything over at the CW.
Wasteland will be exec produced by Davis along with Robert C. Cooper and J.J. Jamieson with Jordan Helman as co-exec producer.

The TNT Network has claimed time and time again that they know drama. That seems to be what they refer to everything as. We've watched flicks ranging from Animal House to Salem's Lot, and each time the "We Know Drama" bug pops up. Go figure. Anyway, the studio has a new supernatural series coming up that's being billed as - you guessed it - action-adventure drama. Come on, guys! Embrace the genre!
According to Variety TNT has bought a script from Mick Davis and is now in development on a project called "Wasteland."
From FremantleMedia North America and Landscape Entertainment, the show will be set in the American Southwest and will tell the tale of a U.S. marshal who is charged with hunting down supernatural escapees on the run following a federal prison break.
Davis was an exec producer and writer on CBS' Rufus Sewell starrer "Eleventh Hour," which ran for one season.

Chicago – There simply wasn’t space on television for both “Fringe” and “Eleventh Hour”. As soon as I saw them, I knew one or both of the fall 2008 shows would have to go. With the strong lead performances by the great Rufus Sewell and beautiful Marley Shelton, I thought “Eleventh Hour” had the edge, especially after it did pretty well in its first season.
As many of us know, “Fringe” is currently struggling for ratings on Fox and CBS’ “Eleventh Hour” has been reduced to a cheap, online-only, feature-free complete series set. The show was far from perfect but it deserved better than this fate.
DVD Rating: 2.0/5.0
The problem with “Eleventh Hour” is clear just after disc one of the series set - it wasn’t original enough to distinguish itself from not just “Fringe” but countless other shows. The program often feels like “CSI: The X-Files,” being clearly inspired...

The CSI trio of CBS, Jerry Bruckheimer TV and director Danny Cannon are reuniting for a new drama project based on the British limited sci-fi series Eleventh Hour.
CBS has ordered a pilot with a hefty penalty for the untitled project, which Jerry Bruckheimer TV is producing with Granada International Media and Warner Bros. TV. The penalty is rumored to amount to a 13-episode production commitment, and WBTV is said to be proceeding with making the series, which is expected to net strong international sales given the Bruckheimer brand's popularity worldwide. CBS would neither confirm nor deny the deal Tuesday.
The drama centers on a special science adviser to the government who, with his feisty female bodyguard in tow, saves people from the worst abuses of science.
The four-hour original series, which aired last year on ITV, starred Patrick Stewart.
Feature writer-director Mick Davis will pen the script for the U.S. version. "CSI" executive producer Cannon, who directed the pilot for CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and is credited with creating the hit franchise's distinct look, is set to helm the pilot.

Screened at the Toronto International Film Festival
TORONTO -- Modigliani falls into the clutches of the romantic notion that an artistic life must be one of hedonistic excess and self-destructive behavior, of debauchery and irresponsibility nurtured by contempt for all social norms and mores. That any discipline, focus or commitment even goes into the art itself is incidental. Which can make for a lively movie full of parties, overwrought emotions and mad passion. But the hangover it produces makes you realize you have no idea with whom you spent more than two frenetic hours.
The film stars Andy Garcia as Amedeo Modigliani, the Jewish-Italian artist who helped turn early 20th century art into one of the most dynamic and expressive periods in art history. Only the film, written and directed by Scottish filmmaker Mick Davis, views its subject as a tempermental drunk, dancing on table tops at La Rotonde cafe and indulging in a childish rivalry with Pablo Picasso (burly Omid Djalili). Both views may be accurate, but the overwhelming emphasis on the latter distorts the significance of the former.
The film was reportedly made for $14 million in Romania -- a surprisingly ideal match for 1919 Paris -- so the producers should have no trouble getting into profit. In the domestic market, however, the art-house-meets-Animal House component may ultimately hurt its boxoffice.
Garcia's Modigliani -- Just call me Modi -- certainly has an all-star supporting "cast" for his supporting players. Davis situates his story in Paris in 1919, the penultimate year of Modi's life, where along with the sullen and haughty Picasso, he cavorts at his favorite cafe with Diego Rivera, Gertrude Stein, Jean Cocteau, Maurice Utrillo, Frida Kahlo and Max Jacob.
His childhood TB, aggravated by a regimen of booze, opium and cigarettes, is swiftly killing him. His mistress Jeanne (hauntingly beautiful Elsa Zylberstein), a nice Catholic girl whose well-to-do father is outraged by her liaison with a Jew, has already borne him one child and another soon will be on the way.
Like all artists in movies, Modi refuses to sell his canvases to those who do not really appreciate his art, cheats on his mistress, ignores his doctor's health warnings and provokes just about everyone he meets.
His greatest animosity is reserved for Picasso, whom he taunts and threatens often enough for Picasso to reach for his gun. (For a bunch of artists, this crowd packs some serious heat.)
This rivalry comes to a head when Modi, for once desperate for money when Jeanne's father sends their baby to a convent, enters the yearly Paris art competition. Picasso enters too, though he hardly needs the money.
The movie then treats its audience to a risible montage of some of the greatest artists ever, all frantically painting away on canvases in their signature styles like children entered a finger-painting contest.
Both Modi and Jeanne are genuinely tragic figures. But the movie so trivializes them as adolescents, lacking control of their own emotions, that their tragedy never takes hold. Davis shows little interest in exploring Modigliani's past life or why he became an artist or the passions that dominate his work, such as the influence of African sculpture and masks on its design.
Garcia has his moments as a wild man but the script never really allows him to plumb the artist's emotional depths. Zyberstein overcomes the cliches about an obsessed, doom mistress to evoke empathy for this delicate moth driven ever closer to the flame.
Israeli cinematographer Emmanuel Kadosh takes advantage of these characters and settings to unveil scene after scene of rare cinematic beauty. He creates sharp contrasts between the whites and blacks, creating tableaus almost like early tintypes. He bathes dreamlike sequences in color tints that capture the sensuality of those long ago days. This not quite real world gives a helpful intimacy and immediacy to the hazy dramatic action. Ironically, in Modigliani, Kadosh is the only real artist in sight.
