The big-scale Cinerama fantasy once thought unrecoverable is back — a terrific restoration brings us George Pal’s ode to fairy tales, filmed on Bavarian locations with an international cast. Laurence Harvey and Karl Boehm are the brothers that compiled the famed tales of princesses, witches, magic spells and fiery dragons. Their idealized biography is interspersed with three full fairy tale stories, about a magic cloak of invisibility, a cobbler’s helpful elves, and a pair of fearless dragon slayers. The show has dancing, beautiful locations, a sequence with Puppetoons and a terrific animated dragon. Featured stars are Claire Bloom, Walter Slezak, Barbara Eden, Oscar Homolka, Martita Hunt, Yvette Mimieux, Russ Tamblyn, Jim Backus, Terry-Thomas and Buddy Hackett; a long-form docu goes into fascinating detail explaining how Dave Strohmaier and Tom March accomplished the mind-boggling restoration.

Heading for Spring Break somewhere? Long before Girls Gone Wild, kids of the Kennedy years found their own paths to the desired fun in the sun, and most of them came back alive. MGM’s comedic look at the Ft. Lauderdale exodus is a half-corny but fully endearing show, featuring the great Dolores Hart and the debuts of Connie Francis, Paula Prentiss and Jim Hutton.

Long before movies routinely created ‘worlds’ with their own twisted fantasy logic, only a few paranoid thrillers, usually odd genre items, tried out twisted stories of deceptive ‘hidden realities.’ Like an extended Twilight Zone entry, this lively James Garner war pic morphs into a bizarre conspiracy worthy of Philip K. Dick. If only it weren’t so “L-a-o” — Literal And Obvious.

Before he became the flag bearer for cinema violence, Sam Peckinpah made his reputation with this unique western, a marvelous rumination on ethics, morality and personal responsibility. MGM all but threw it away in the summer of 1962 but it immediately became a critical favorite.

San Francisco Board of Supervisors candidate George Davis stripped buck naked in Times Square on Wednesday to campaign for the right to be nude in public. Davis spoke out against a 2013 San Francisco public nudity ban introduced by his opponent, Scott Wiener. He says nudity is a form of expression. After Davis's speech, he conducted interviews stark naked. Then he walked to where artist Andy Golub was body-painting another naked man. Times Square Batmans and Elmos and other onlookers gawked, laughed and took photos while moving out of Davis's way.

February House Public Theater, NY
In a theater season dominated by musicals adapted from movies, it is nice to see an original new musical, but originality alone is no guarantee of a fully realized and satisfying entertainment. February House, the new musical opening at the Public Theater, is indeed original. It has its assets, including intelligence and an impressive score, but it is also uneven. While the musical has moments that are close to magical, it ultimately left me wishing it had delivered more than it did.
February House is inspired by real-life events. In 1940, flamboyant editor George Davis took a house in Brooklyn and turned it into a bohemian commune for writers and artists, including such icons as Carson McCullers, Benjamin Britten, W.H. Auden, and Gypsy Rose Lee. The musical depicts life at what was called February House -- because so many of those artists had February birthdays --...

February House (Playing at the Public Theater through June 10) February House is an ambitious artistic experiment about an ambitious artistic experiment: An attempt by Harpers fiction editor George Davis (Julian Fleisher) to found an art commune in Brooklyn Heights in 1940. Davis’s incandescent brood of tinderbox souls included wunderkind novelist Carson McCullers (the adorable Kristen Sieh), composer Benjamin Britten (Stanley Bahorek) and his lover-muse, the tenor Peter Pears (Ken Barnett), anti-fascist firebrand Erika Mann (Stephanie Hayes), “thinking-man’s stripper” Gypsy Rose Lee (Kacie Sheik), and, as elder statesman (at 33), the revered poet W.H. Auden (Erik Lochtefeld, subtly and sustainedly wrong for a disagreeable and miswritten role). To capture the brilliant din, composer-lyricist Gabriel Kahane, a narrative songwriter of great skill and ample wit, has attempted a simultaneous dialogue with the yearning poetry of Auden, the modern musical decouplings of Britten, McCullers’s Southern longings, and Gypsy’s brass. It’s...

Too often we dismiss good art because of expectations, those trifling bits of anticipation we drag around and throw in front of a film’s opening credits that will assuredly color any opinions we have of the film itself. The Antics Roadshow is a perfect example of this phenomenon. It is the second directorial effort from Banksy, the renegade anarchist street artist who turns advertisements into on their heads, make barren walls into political satire, and takes the opportunity of doing a couch gag on The Simpsons and using it to show the arduous work dispatched by an uncaring multinational conglomerate to line their pockets with money from selling more Bart swag.
Banksy’s first foray into film direction, the excellent, perplexing, and fun Exit Through the Gift Shop, was less a personal voyage through the eyes of Banksy and more of his retelling of another person’s story. Taking footage filmed by Thierry Guetta,...

The beauty queen, the Mormon missionary tied to a bed – Joyce McKinney's bizarre story gripped Britain in the 1970s and is now retold in a fine documentary
Joyce McKinney is one of those names that for people of a certain age opens a doorway into the past. To mention it is to be transported back to the 1970s, when there were only three TV channels, British food was awful, sex was naughty and Fleet Street was still the home of national newspapers. Back then computers were the preserve of boffins in white coats, but even if journalists had managed to lay their hands on some mainframe monster the size of a small house, and programmed it with all the ingredients of the perfect tabloid story, the results could never have matched the bizarre and compelling tale of a wannabe beauty queen's obsessional love.

Film architecture is created in film studios, places on the fringe of reality. Anything that is built is usually only present in part, and made of impermanent materials. Perhaps it should be called cineplastique. It is a dynamic and constantly transforming architecture, in contrast to the architectural traditions of the real world. Using architectural fragments, models, back projections, mirror tricks, painted backdrops, large-format photographs and virtually generated settings creates this unique world. It is sometimes enough to tell a story if it is simply linked with a building, like the Bates Motel in Psycho or the German fortress in La grande illusion. Yet however near, however tangible film architecture ultimately may seem, it also remains vague, fleeting, and a mere impression. They are projections of dream spaces, designed, shaped and built in a film architect's workshop. As Wolfgang Jacobsen points out, "film is a laboratory of modernism. Film architecture is a laboratory of film modernism.
