Prince William and Kate Middleton might be happily married now, but that doesn’t mean the iconic royal couple didn’t have their share of problems throughout their relationship. As anyone who has spent two decades together would know, sometimes things in a relationship don’t always go as planned.
William and Kate hit a few bumps in the road in the years before William proposed, with one of those reportedly being when William abruptly canceled his New Year’s Eve plans with Kate — and it happened only a few months before breaking up with her.

Everton’s South African midfielder Steven Pienaar has been tipped to leave Goodison Park at the end of the season, with former club Ajax touted as the likely destination.
According to the South Africa national team’s official Twitter account (via Liverpool Echo), the player’s business manager Robert Moore has confirmed that the deal is under discussion.
Pienaar returned from a lengthy injury layoff last weekend when Everton defeated Dagenham & Redbridge 2-0 in the Fa Cup, but it is unclear whether he features in manager Roberto Martinez’s first-team plans.
The 33-year-old winger has made almost 200 appearances for Everton across two spells with the club and two loan stints. He rejoined the Blues from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012 following an unsuccessful stay in London.
He played for Ajax between 2001 and 2006, scoring 15 times in 94 appearances before leaving the Netherlands for Borussia Dortmund.

It’s nearly here. FIFA 16 is ready for release at the end of September, and just to whet your appetite, you can now try out the hotly-anticipated demo version of the game.
Alongside the demo though, game-makers EA Sports have now confirmed player ratings for a host of clubs in the new game. The list includes the likes of Real Madrid, Chelsea, Manchester City, Paris Saint Germain and European champions Barcelona.
Each outfit boasts a stream of world-class talent, and even before the main release of FIFA 16 you’re able to test the game out – with the aforementioned clubs – in the demo.
But this article will bring you a selection of those confirmed ratings. Here, we focus on the team who swept all before them last season. Luis Enrique’s Barcelona powered to the La Liga title, won the Copa del Rey and completed an historic...

Newcastle United target Charlie Austin “will be moving on” from Queens Park Rangers this summer “if the owners get the right money”, admits Chris Ramsey.
The west London club’s boss believes Austin would be a “big loss” to any side, but knows that if one of the several Barclays Premier League clubs chasing him meets Qpr’s £15 million asking price then he will leave Loftus Road.
Austin started Qpr’s 2-0 opening-day defeat to Charlton Athletic but that could potentially be his final game for the club.

And, speaking after the game to TalkSport, Ramsey said of Austin:
“He would be a big loss for any club in any division.
“He’s going to be a massive gain for anybody that has the money to buy him. If the owners get the right money, I think he will be moving on.

Tottenham Hotspur are aiming to snatch in at the 11th hour ahead of both Newcastle United and West Ham United and claim the signature of Charlie Austin this summer, according to reports.
The Mirror reports an “exclusive” that Spurs are looking to lure Austin across London to White Hart Lane in order to replace Emmanuel Adebayor, who is wanted by Aston Villa.
Interestingly, Villa also reportedly hold an interest in Austin, but it seems that Adebayor could become their player instead. What’s more, The Mirror claim that Spurs have already spoken to Qpr about Austin’s availability.

Newcastle United have offered Haris Vuckic to Queens Park Rangers as a portion of a potential part-exchange deal for Charlie Austin.
As WhatCulture.com/Nufc first reported last week, the Magpies are unwilling to meet Qpr’s £15 million asking price for the 18-goal hitman, so instead they will flesh out their offer with a fringe player potentially moving the other way.
The Daily Mail now claim that 22-year-old midfielder Vuckic is the man who could move to Loftus Road if Austin does find himself on Tyneside come the end of the summer.

Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Christian Benteke from Aston Villa, according to Metro.
Louis van Gaal is still on the lookout for a first class striker and the Red Devils were linked with Paris Saint-Germain’s Edinson Cavani earlier this week as they look to replace Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao.
Reports now claim that they have now agreed to pay out the Aston Villa frontman’s release clause which stands at £32.5 million.
The 24-year-old ended last season in fine form and re-established himself under the guidance of Tim Sherwood as one of the Premier League’s most deadly strikers.
Liverpool and Chelsea had also been monitoring the player who scored 15 goals in 33 games during the 2014/15 season.
Despite the reports Tim Sherwood expects his striker to stay at Villa Park.

Earlier rumours that Nicolas Lombaerts has failed his Sunderland medical look to be disappointingly true. According to the Sunderland Echo, a fee had been agreed for the Zenit centre back, thought to be in the region of £5,000,000. Personal terms are also believed to have been agreed upon, disproving reports that a wage dispute was the reason for this delay.
The 30 year old has been a prime target for the Black Cats in recent weeks, and would have strengthened an ageing, sparsely populated Sunderland defence. The only centre backs remaining in the senior squad are John O’Shea, Wes Brown, Sebastian Coates and Santiago Vergini – and the latter looks to be on his way out of the club. The Argentinian has not travelled to America for the customary pre-season tour, and was last seen departing an under-21s game in a taxi earlier this week.

Newcastle United will reward Paul Dummett for his consistency during an otherwise dreadful 2014-15 season for the Magpies defence by handing the 23-year-old a new contract – and the No 3 shirt.
The Tyneside-born defender made 29 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring once, and he operated efficiently at left-back before performing admirably when called upon to play at centre-back.
It is that versatility that makes him so important to a side who conceded 61 Premier League goals last season – the second-highest in the division – but who suffered greatly during Dummett’s extended absence due to a knee-cap injury at the start of 2015.
Adam Davy/Pa Wire
Although Dummett only signed a new six-year deal with the Magpies in November 2013, his wage is one of the lowest of the first teamers at the club due to the fact he progressed through the club’s academy and that is why...

Udinese will have to fight off interest from several European teams if they are to win the race for Fulham striker Kostas Mitroglou, according to Italian reports.
The Greek international is at the centre of a bidding war with the Italian side facing stiff competition from Turkish giants Fenerbache, who are lining up a move for the forward, according to a Football Italia report.
If Udinese are to bring the in-demand player to Italy they will have to match the Turkish giants €2 million wage offer.

Mitoglou recently spent time back in his Greek homeland, having enjoyed a successful season-long loan that saw the 27-year-old notch 19 goals in 34 appearances for Superleague champions Olympiacos, including the winner in a 3-2 win against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League group stage.

Alexis Sanchez, Diego Costa, Cesc Fabregas, Ander Herrera, Fraser Forster, Esteban Cambiasso; from top to (almost) bottom, the 2014/15 has been packed full of explosively effective signings, men who have made an immediately positive impact upon the clubs who took a chance on them.
But every silver lining has a cloud, and this year’s campaign has been no exception. Of all the seasons in recent memory, this year’s has perhaps the most notorious in terms of highly-rated flops. In both the summer and January transfer windows, clubs exchanged various sums of money for players who simply haven’t lived up to expectations upon arriving at their new grounds. Some lasted only a few games, while others put their fans through a prolonged campaign of torture from the moment they set foot on the field.

Newcastle United will have to secure the victory they need against Queens Park Rangers to ease their relegation fears without Siem de Jong.
Magpies interim head coach John Carver confirmed during his pre-match press conference on Thursday that De Jong would be unavailable for the trip to Loftus Road on Saturday.
Adam Armstrong is also unavailable, but it is the absence of attacking-midfielder De Jong that could prove to be the most damaging to Newcastle’s survival hopes.

Carver’s men sit just one place and two points ahead of 18th-placed Hull City ahead of their match against Qpr, who have already been relegated alongside Burnley – and they could really have done with De Jong’s attacking threat.

Siem de Jong has made just four appearances for Newcastle United, including two as a substitute, and he only returned at the weekend following a seven-month injury lay-off – yet the Dutch attacking-midfielder is the Magpies’ best hope for Premier League survival.
Signed from Ajax last summer for £6 million, the six-cap Dutch international was supposed to form part of the spine of the Newcastle side this term but he has managed just 116 minutes of Premier League action in all – and who knows where the Magpies may have been had they had their midfielder out on the park every week.
In just 17 minutes (plus four minutes of injury-time) against Swansea City, De Jong offered more of an aerial threat, more creativity, more leadership and, most crucially, more of a goal threat than the rest of the Newcastle team combined. His goal after 87 minutes was dispatched with aplomb. A delightful...

Move over Danny Sturridge, there’s a younger footballer with a more obscure background than you, who cost less and dresses better.
Since Ayoze Pérez came to the Premier League his form on the pitch has been a breath of fresh air for everyone on Tyneside. Many wondered why Newcastle looked towards the lesser Spanish league striker to bolster their attacking options after a disastrous term in front of goal, but for a mere couple of million doubters have been silenced by one of the summer’s biggest bargains.
But aside from his sleek play on the pitch, one painfully obvious fact has gone unnoticed amidst his run of eye-catching form: Ayoze is quite clearly the freshest, most underrated and arguably greatest hipster player to grace the Premier League in recent years.

As a team who have long been widely renowned for their traditionally attacking style, Spurs have had some great players and have scored a lot of goals throughout their history.
A lot of those goals have been mundane and boring – tap-ins, headers, penalties, deflections and the like – but some of those goals have been absolutely fantastic and very memorable. Whether it was due to individual brilliance, wonderful team play, the circumstances in which they were scored or something else entirely, everyone can associate Spurs with a plethora of noteworthy goals.
While every goal deserves praising for one reason or another, regardless of how it went in, some goals just have to be admired due to the sheer audacity of the scorer for attempting to score in the manner they did in the first place.
Spurs have scored plenty of goals that make you view the scorer in that exact way.

All aboard the loony train to Silly Town.
Alan Pardew has come out with what might be his best ever quote, suggesting that Newcastle are inspired by Bayern Munich, because they work hard. Which is a bit like being inspired by the Sistine Chapel because of the brand of paint used.
He says he sees the same in Newcastle’s style of play as can be seen in the streamroller of German football, despite the fact that it’s looking suspiciously like he’s never actually watched them play. So in honour of his assessment, here are 5 other things – mostly related to Newcastle – that definitely weren’t inspired by Bayern Munich…

All power to Pardew, his approach to not playing football and beating teams on the break has paid dividends in the past month and a bit: Newcastle are inside the top half of the table and within touching distance of the top four, with three very winnable games to come. And typically, analysts have started to assess precise what has turned the club’s fortunes around.
Inevitably, those who remain stoically anti-Pardew will say that it is no more than frustration and luck that has got the teams through – that victory is coming despite the manager – while the other side of the coin will say that it’s his genius that is really counting. The truth is, it’s a little of both.

Alan Pardew must heed the lesson of Man City and West Brom and play Paul Dummett at centre-back, especially with Fabricio Coloccini potentially injured for a few games. He should be the man to play alongside either Steven Taylor (preferably, though he could be injured) or Mike Williamson (at a push).
As Bob Moncur so aptly pointed out this week, Dummett is an old fashioned centre-half, and he is far more comfortable playing there than he is at full-back where he is still learning the game. The longer he plays at full-back the more wrong habits he’s going to learn; the reason he isn’t as comfortable at full-back is his positional naivety and his inability to mark the space behind him.
Dummett has himself stated that he feels comfortable at centre-back:
“I do enjoy it at centre-back. In the two games I’ve played there this season,...

Three goals in, and already Ayoze Perez is looking like a future Newcastle United hero. He cost nothing, came from an inauspicious former club in Tenerife and was identified as one for the future (despite ringing endorsements from most Spanish based journalists who saw him play last year). If you thought he was going to start against Spurs and West Brom at the start of the season, you would probably have been laughed out of the pub.
But now things have changed: we’re told Barcelona, Real Madrid and Porto were vanquished in their attempts to sign the young Spaniard and that Lee Charnley pulled off a masterstroke – on the advice of Graham Carr – and Alan Pardew’s eyes are twinkling at the prospect he’s got (even if he keeps saying there’s room for improvement).
The back-heel flick he scored against West Brom was the mark of genius blossoming,...

It was an outrageous moment, from a disarmingly brilliant, completely surprising revelation, and Newcastle fans will talk about it for a long time, but did Ayoze Perez’s flick goal against West Brom deserve more acknowledgement?
https://vine.co/v/OizIO50aF1L
Alan Shearer has already said that had it been Sergio Aguero who scored the goal we would be talking about it for weeks, and it seems that the Spaniards audacious back heel isn’t quite getting the massive reaction it should be.
The trick is an incredibly difficult thing to master, particularly given the size of the target he had to hit (anywhere else and Ben Foster would have been able to reach it), and for a young import to do that in just his second league start is unthinkable. If you’re Zlatan Ibrahimovic, that type of goal is your bread and butter – for Newcastle fans,...

The run continues.
Just weeks after the bottom three looked like it was going to become an awfully familiar place for Newcastle fans, the Magpies are up to 8th in the Premier League having won four in a row (and five in all competitions). Dark clouds are lifting, and fans are able to celebrate while inevitably navigating the frankly ridiculous accusations that they are either fickle or unreasonable about their expectations (thanks Mr Bellamy) for wanting to win.
Some will say faith in Alan Pardew is paying off, that he was always going to come good, but the reality is that the manager has changed the way the team played, invested trust in youth and built a solid foundation that wasn’t there for most of the first 7 games of the season. And thanks to the brilliance of Ayoze Perez, and a stunning cross from Daryl Janmaat,...

Times are changing at Newcastle. The side who looked genuine relegation candidates against Southampton and struggled badly to score goals or creative much of anything just a few games ago have found their stride, and their natural position, adopting away team tactics to surprising effect against teams who should be rolling them over.
The latest scalp of Liverpool was probably the most impressive (putting aside the wildcard circumstances of the League Cup), and Alan Pardew should be invited to enjoy the usual patting of his own back that inevitably greeted the victory. Fair play to the manager, he used a hugely reductive tactic extremely well, frustrating Liverpool and waiting with a rope-a-dope stinger that improbably almost led to two goals.
It wasn’t beautiful football, but it was victorious football, and each of the players who helped win deserve their credit. But how did they rate?

It’s curious that Newcastle boss Alan Pardew seems so down on the pure 4-3-3 formation that team announcers occasionally still confuse his more defensively minded model for, considering it was that formation that was responsible for his Manager Of The Year award. Why deny your best achievements? Perhaps it’s because Hatem Ben Arfa played too much of a part? Perhaps it’s because the fall out of playing Demba Ba wider almost got Newcastle relegated when Papiss Cisse forgot how to be a striker? Either way, he needs to go back to it regardless.
This season, Newcastle have been set up with an agenda to keep as much of the ball as possible, in the hope that possession will translate into goals by sheer force of will. Inevitably, it is a system built on a bland, terribly English idea of all the parts...

It’s funny how injuries can help a team as much as hinder them: first Tim Krul miraculously recovered from what was thought a serious elbow injury picked up on a frustratingly distracting international break, and now French striker Emanuel Riviere has picked up on the eve of Leicester game. That might seem like a funny thing to say, given that Newcastle need as many striking options as they can get right now, but it means Alan Pardew can now ignore the calls to play two strikers thanks to a handy excuse.
The former Monaco striker has apparently suffered a knock in the build-up to the game, having been dropped for the Swansea game, and while some will bemoan the sparse available options in attack, there is pretty much no way Pardew would ever have played him even though Papiss Cisse has played two international games in the last week.

Of all the Newcastle players who have allegedly been “Pardewed”, Yoan Gouffran’s fall from grace in the past year or so has been particularly frustrating. Signed as a bargain, the wide attacker was a very useful addition in the first half of last season, adding pace, hard-work and goals to the team.
He might not have been massively prolific, but he was good for easing the burden on Loic Remy and Yohan Cabaye. But then Cabaye was sold and Pardew struggled to change the system, adapting player roles to try and protect the defence as the midfield and attack stuttered and failed to chalk up the goals needed to hide frailties at the back.
Part of that change of system meant reining in Gouffran, who is a victim of his own willingness to run. Instead of being allowed to play as a wide attacker, the...

Newcastle United’s new signing Siem de Jong is facing up to Four Months on the sidelines after suffering a serious groin tear during training, according to the Mirror. De Jong only joined the Magpies from Ajax this July and his debut campaign in England looks like it’s been wrecked before it’s barely started.
The Magpies paid Ajax £5 million for the striker’s signature this summer, but he will now have to undergo tests to ascertain the extent of the injury amid fears he could be out until Christmas. His club are reported to have delayed the tests while the injury eases, and with the summer transfer window now closed, this set-back will come as a hammer blow to manager Alan Pardew.

He is one of five players in manager Roy Hodgson’s squad who are aged 22 or under, with Arsenal midfield duo Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling and Manchester United’s Phil Jones also named in the team.
Uncapped midfielder Jack Colback missed out through injury while Arsenal’s new signing Danny Welbeck is also sidelined after picking up a knock in training. Goalkeeper Ben Foster is another casualty after injuring his thumb, and has returned to his club West Brom as a “precautionary measure”.
Norway manager Per-Mathias Hogmo has named a few familiar faces in his squad to face England. Norwich City midfielder Alexander Tettey, Celtic’s Stefan Johansen, Cardiff City’s Mats Moller Daehli and Blackburn Rovers striker...

Despite having the best of the second half at Villa Park, Newcastle were forced to endure a nervy stoppage time period after Mike Williamson was sent off for two yellow card offences. Referee Mike Dean had already been card happy – though most of his decisions were spot on – when he booked the big centre-half for apparently tripping Darren Bent.
Replays showed that Williamson and Bent had accidentally come together – despite the theatrical reaction of Bent – but the reaction of the crowd, and of the prone striker proved enough to earn a yellow. That decision proved more unfair minutes later when Williamson legitimately earned himself a yellow for a professional foul on Fabian Delph and was sent off.
That was a slight blemish on what was otherwise a good performance by Dean – which is more than can be said for Aston Villa’s second half display,...

Despite being a 40/1 rank outsider to face the sack first this season, following an unbelievable rescue and revival that saw Palace finish in 11th place in the Premier League, Tony Pulis sensationally quit the club last night after crisis talks with co-owner Steve Parish. Clearly, the crisis was not averted.
Now Palace - who have brought in some solid though mostly unspectacular players with the likes of Brede Hangeland, Fraizer Campbell, Chris Kettings and Martin Kelly from Liverpool – face a last-minute scrabble to bring in a new manager just hours before their season opener against Arsenal tomorrow. If the prospect of facing the Gunners at the Emirates wasn’t daunting enough, Palace must now do it without the manager who reinvented the team last year and brought with him a new footballing mentality that turned the team from relegation fodder to near top half finishers.

Let’s be perfectly frank here, Ben Arfa is not wanted at Newcastle United, and no amount of shouting his name at away games, or accusing Alan Pardew of idiocy over his treatement is going to change that. Rightly or wrongly, the player is deemed a toxic influence at the club, with poor on-field impact not matching up to his undoubted, unquantifiable talent, and rumours that he is something of a diva around the training ground.
Make no mistake, the Frenchman has not simply been relegated to play with the kids because he is carrying a little too much timber, and the manager’s assertions that his professionalism leaves a lot to be desired is a hint of what he’s really like behind closed doors. But the real question for Newcastle fans is how far a player of such monumental talent – and...

Chelsea are a club used to getting what they want. Ever since the £140 million take-over by Russian tycoon Roman Abramovich in 2003, money has not been an object for the London outfit, one of English football’s most profligate sides of the 21st century.
Abramovich’s well-thumbed chequebook has been used to persuade some of the world’s best players to join the Stamford Bridge revolution over the past decade, with the likes of Arjen Robben, Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard and more recently Diego Costa pulling on a Blue jersey.
The players they have signed has understandably made all the back pages of the Sunday tabloids, with Abramovich signing no fewer than 89 players as a cost of £905 million since his takeover. But it’s the players he didn’t sign that get the less publicity.

When news broke that Hatem Ben Arfa had returned from his summer break only to find himself – along with Sylvain Marveaux – training with the kids, some eyebrows were raised, and suspicions that the player had played his last game for the club seemed to gather pace, particularly when Remy Cabella – a similarly flair-based, small-framed player – was signed from Montpellier. The suggestion was that despite his team-mates coming back to the club in better condition than they left it, Ben Arfa had returned with some of the extra bulk that cruelly saw him dubbed Fatem Ben Arfa by some towards the end of last season.
Now, according to Le Parisien, the club are not only attempting to fine the Frenchman for being 1.5kilos over weight – which he claims is muscle weight from his holiday – but also to force him out of the club entirely.

The Monaco Grand Prix is a race like no other, winding around the high rise apartments, jewellery stores and luxury yachts of the principality of Monte Carlo. Cars flash past metal barriers, barrel up and down twisting hills, and plunge into the darkness of a tunnel at full throttle. The jewel in the crown of the Formula 1 calendar always delivers talking points, drama, and flat-out racing. This year’s race was by no means an exception.
As the dust settled on the street circuit lining the French Riviera it was immediately apparent that an air of tension was hanging over the winning team. Mercedes-Benz driver Nico Rosberg had secured a solid victory over his team-mate Lewis Hamilton, but there were no congratulatory hugs or smiles on the podium. To onlookers, it would be almost unbelievable that the two drivers were once childhood friends and karting team-mates.

Southampton starlet Luke Shaw will become the first signing of the Louis van Gaal era with Manchester United on the verge of agreeing a £30 million deal, according to the Daily Star.
Van Gaal has been handed a £200 million warchest by United this summer and will waste no time in spending it, having only been appointed David Moyes’s permanent successor on Monday.
The Dutchman looks set to shake things up at Old Trafford, with the move for Shaw likely meaning the end of Patrice Evra’s career at the Theatre of Dreams.
Evra has been tipped to follow fellow defenders Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic out of the club and has been linked with a move to Juventus recently.
The deal for Shaw also means van Gaal has instantly achieved what predecessor Moyes tried so unsuccessfully to do during his 10 month reign – replace the Frenchman.

Our season ended in underwhelming fashion on Sunday with the 1-1 draw against Southampton underlining the sort of disappointment we’ve all felt throughout the past ten months.
But don’t despair; now is the time to look forward with Louis van Gaal expected to be announced as David Moyes’s successor any day now, while this summer will provide a much-needed opportunity to take stock and re-build.
Watching our neighbours in Blue lift the Premier League yesterday wasn’t easy, but there is still plenty to be optimistic about, with new faces set to make their way to Old Trafford in the coming weeks and months.
Surely the debacle of the last transfer window – in which our only acquisition was Marouane Fellaini – will not be repeated, with van Gaal all set to ring the changes as he looks to take us back to the glory days.

For a side that has lost five Premier League games in a row, a trip to the Emirates Stadium to play Arsenal is the last place Newcastle would want to visit in the midst of such a deflating run. 2014 has been far from kind to the Magpies, 13 of the 18 matches played since we put five past Stoke at St James’ Park on Boxing Day have ended in defeat, and the squad make their way to North London with the clubs worst losing sequence in the top-flight since the 1986-87 campaign hanging over their heads. A sixth straight loss would seriously jeopardise our position in the top-half of the table, especially with Stoke and Crystal Palace now breathing down our necks and standing just one victory away from plunging us to 11th.
An unthinkable scenario on the first day in January when we were...

Crystal Palace enjoyed a superb victory on Saturday as they emerged victorious against West Bromwich Albion at Selhurst Park, picking up a 3-1 victory.
The game was a key battle in the fight to avoid relegation and Palace’s victory means they are now three points above the relegation zone and one point off the comparable safety of mid-table. The Baggies, however, dropped into the relegation zone and it currently doesn’t look good for Pepe Mel’s side.
Palace’s victory showed us some key things about Tony Pulis’ side that could prove to be hugely important between now and May. Their display raises some points that ultimately suggest that Crystal Palace will stay in the Premier League, though of course they will face a difficult and wholly different test in their next two games against Everton and Manchester United.

Crystal Palace manager Tony Pulis praised his January signings after witnessing his side secure a vital three points against West Brom.
Tom Ince, who arrived on loan from Blackpool on deadline day, opened the scoring before fellow debutant Joe Ledley headed home a goal of his own. Pulis said:
“The biggest thing about Tom was his work. He scored and got an assist. We’re pleased for him, Scott Dann and Joe Ledley who were all superb today.”
“I’m pleased for our entire group of players and it’s them who decide whether we can stay in the division.”
A huge moment in the match was Marouane Chamkh’s penalty, which restored the Eagles two goal advantage. Pulis believed the right decision was made but that Ben Foster didn’t deserve a red card. He said:
“Ben did catch him, it’s...

One common criticism associated with people in the media is that they get “paid too much.” It’s difficult to work out how much is “too much,” of course, because there’s no way to accurately decide whether somebody is getting more money than they deserve for performing a job or task. Still, most people generally seem to think that footballers are overpaid for what they do – and the same goes for a lot of the people at the BBC, too, apparently.
Which brings us to this article: the salaries listed within are all sourced for accuracy from The Sun Newspaper, page 25 on the 16th January 2014. The numbers may seem shocking, but this is what the BBC talent roster really are getting paid – in some cases for a few hours graft a week. Diego Lugano’s second half header ensured Everton slipped to sixth in the Premier League as Pepe Mel picked up a point in his first game in charge of West Bromwich Albion. The visitors had led at The Hawthorns through a fourth goal of the season for Kevin Mirallas.
Albion started brightly with the controversial Nicolas Anelka feeding strike partner Matej Vydra as the young Czech worked Toffees keeper Tim Howard on eight minutes. Mel’s new managerial magic swiftly subsided, however.
Bryan Oviedo, in the Everton XI in place of the injured Steven Pienaar, fired wide twice in the space of a minute. First he volleyed the second ball from a free kick across goal when Liam Ridgewell’s clearance fell to him.
Oviedo then snatched at a second effort and Mirallas worked Ben Foster in the home goal after coming inside.

Emmanuel Adebayor bagged a brace either side of a Chico Flores own goal as Tottenham Hotspur ensured Swansea’s winless Premier League run extended to eight matches.
Wilfried Bony netted a consolation at the Liberty Stadium as the Swans saw injuries hamper them yet again. Tim Sherwood meanwhile took his team level with fourth placed Liverpool.
Jonjo Shelvey twice fired wide in the opening six minutes for hosts Swansea. He later worked Hugo Lloris after winning possession from Spurs centre back Vlad Chiriches. The hosts continued their strong start when Bony shot off target.
Ivory Coast international bony then cracked a venomous 25-yarder off the bar midway through the first half after Shelvey broke forward and find him. Tottenham, by contrast offered little, but then scored against the run of play.
Adebayor headed a Christian Eriksen back post centre home on 35 minutes, making it five goals in his last eight.

Premier League title favourites Manchester City are prepared to underline their credentials by launching a £30 million January move for Southampton left back Luke Shaw.
Despite being just 18 years of age, Shaw is already regarded as England’s long-term successor to Ashley Cole following a series of outstanding top flight displays for the Saints.
According to The Mail on Sunday, City would break the world record fee for a fullback of £29.5 million – set in 2008 when Barcelona bought Brazil’s Dani Alves from Sevilla – to land Shaw.
Manuel Pellegrini wants to storm a march on other suitors Chelsea and Manchester United by offering the money up front for Shaw in the winter window. Southampton have indicated that one of their prized assets is happy to stay at St Mary’s until the summer, but may consider such a massive offer.

John Obi Mikel and Oscar netted in the second half at Pride Park as Chelsea progressed in the Fa Cup at the expense of Championship promotion contenders Derby County.
Rams boss Steve McClaren was forced into making two changes after his side saw their unbeaten run end when Wigan beat them at home on New Year’s Day. Goalscoring midfielder Craig Bryson and Johnny Russell both missed out injured, so Simon Dawkins – signed permanently from Spurs in the week – and Jeff Hendrick started.
Blues manager Jose Mourinho rotated his squad once again after making an inspired substitution to win at Southampton last time out. Petr Cech, Eden Hazard, Juan Mata, Fernando Torres and John Terry were all rested on the bench.
Germany attacker Andre Schurrle did not travel. Michael Essien, Samuel Eto’o, David Luiz, Oscar, Mark Schwarzer and Willian all came into the XI.

Heard something inflammatory and outrageous this year? Odds are one of this lot said it. So in a head head-to-head contest, who's the most horrible troll of them all?
Don't feed the trolls. That's rule number one of the internet. When you're confronted with someone who enjoys deliberately making unnecessarily inflammatory statements, the best course of action is to deny them the emotional response they crave. Everyone knows that.
But, oh, it's hard. Especially when, as this year has proved, some people can actually make a pretty good living from being a troll. We've picked eight of the most recognisable – some politicians, some entertainers, some only known for how unremittingly awful they are – and pitted them against each other to find our Troll of the Year. So, yes, we're feeding the trolls. But at least we're feeding them to each other.

The Halfway House (1943)
Director: Basil Dearden
A young girl tries to bring her estranged parents back together by contriving a mini-break at a charming Welsh inn. It might sound a bit like The Parent Trap, but The Halfway House is an intriguing but uneven wartime fantasy drama from Ealing Studios. Director Basil Dearden’s film was co-written by Angus MacPhail and Diana Morgan (Went The Day Well?) and also features one of the most grating Welsh accents I’ve ever heard – courtesy of Glynis Johns.
The Halfway House begins with a series of brief vignettes introducing the main characters. There’s young Joanna (Sally Anne Howes), whose bickering parents Richard and Jill (Richard Bird and Valerie White) are on the brink of divorce. A disgraced army officer Fortescue (Guy Middleton) is released from prison, after serving time for pilfering the regimental funds. At a Welsh port, ex-navy captain Harry Meadows...
